Linda Bernhart Lehmann

Linda Bernhart Lehmann, 96, formerly of Nathrop, died July 19, 2003 in Colorado Springs after a brief hospitalization.
Mrs. Lehmann was born Aug. 14, 1906, in Chicago, Ill., the second of six children of immigrant parents, Alois and Matilda Bernhart. She was raised in southern Illinois, Chicago and the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale.
Before moving with her husband, Kenneth, to Colorado in 1974, Mrs. Lehmann lived for more than 30 years in Hinsdale, where she was active in community affairs.
A resident at Mount Princeton Hot Springs for 27 years, Mrs. Lehmann was an active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, Buena Vista; former officer of the Columbine Garden Club and AARP; a member of the Arkansas Valley Art Center (formerly Chaffee County Council on the Arts).
She also wrote prose, poetry and short stories, receiving several awards in national American Association of University Women poetry and short-story workshop competitions.
She published two children’s books — “Better Than a Princess” (1978) and “Tilli’s New World” (1983) — based upon research into her mother’s journey to America and early years here.
She was a painter in oil and watercolor and the recipient of several awards and ribbons for her entries in local art exhibits.
Mrs. Lehmann was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth. She is survived by two sons, Scott Kenneth (Rebecca T.) Lehmann of Storrs, Conn. and Ronald Arthur (Janet K.) of Colorado Springs; one grandchild, three step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren; sister, Martha Barr, of Cameron, Mo. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Lehmann will be remembered for her considerable creative abilities and skills, her keen intellect, her active interest in the affairs of the church, world, nation, community and neighborhood and her vigor and enthusiasm for life.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 217 Crossman Ave., Buena Vista.

Ralph J. Mazza

Mass of the Christian Burial for Ralph J. Mazza was held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Fr. Henry Grodecki C.M. officiated the service. The organist was Georgianna Smith and the soloist was Cathryn Bishop Campbell.
Musical selections were “How Great Thou Art,” “Ave Maria,” “Be Not Afraid” and “Amazing Grace.”
Pallbearers were Frank Mazza, Albert Mazza, Steve Pacheco, Gene Martellaro, Frank Cicerelli and Ted Pulos.
Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery where members of the Elks Lodge No. 808 held their traditional funeral service and the members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars held their traditional flag presentation and played taps.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Domnick A. ‘Dom’ Pasquale

Domnick A. “Dom’’ Pasquale, 85, died Aug. 16, 2003, at his home in Cañon City.
He was born Oct. 18, 1917, in Salida to Frank DiPasquale and Sally Muto.
Mr. Pasquale was born, raised and educated in Salida.
He was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 610, Sons Of Italy and the National Rifle Association. He was also a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Mr. Pasquale served during World War II in the Army as a cook, which was where he learned his lifelong avocation.
After his discharge he managed the Costello Lounge in Salida. He later established Tami’s Café in Cañon City which he operated until the 1970s. He then opened and operated McClure’s into the mid-1980s.
He was an avid hunter and an expert fly fisherman. His favorite spot was the Arkansas River.
Mr. Pasquale married Nelle L. Hamlin June 8, 1957, in Cañon City. She preceded him in death in 1988.
He is survived by his daughter, Judi Burgett, Cañon City; stepsons, Lee (Illa) Parker, Goodland, Kans.; Russell “Rusty” (Ann) Parker, Shoshone, Idaho; six grandchildren including Tami Bentley, Cañon City and Shawn (Laurie) Wertzbaugher, Cañon City; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Carl Pasquale, Raton, N.M.; Paul (Toni) Pasquale, Walnut Creek, Calif. and Johnny Pasquale, Salida and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Pasquale was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Robert and a sister, Letitia.
Viewing will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home, 1449 S. Ninth St., Cañon City.
A scripture service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery. The minister will be Fr. James King.
People who wish may make contributions to Friends Of Hospice, Fremont County, P.O. Box 1796, Cañon City, CO 81215-1796.
Funeral arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, Cañon City.

Matthew Jacob McWhirter

Matthew Jacob McWhirter was born Aug. 19, 2003, at 2:15 a.m. at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center. He died a short time later.
He will be missed by his parents, Misha and Gavin McWhirter of Maysville; brothers, Drew McWhirter of Maysville and Joel McWhirter of Buena Vista; grandparents, Kathy Chappell of Maysville and Donelda and Richard Rausch of Odessa, Texas and uncle and aunt, Dan and Sarah Miller of Orlando, Fla.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

George H. Smith

George H. Smith, 89, a resident of Salida since 1926, died Aug. 18, 2003, at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs.
Mr. Smith was born Feb. 26, 1914, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, to George and Mary (Siverwright) Smith.
He served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Smith was a Broncos fan and has held season tickets for the past 41 years.
He is survived by his wife, Veta Smith, Colorado Springs; brother, Jack Smith, Florida and many cousins.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma Smith and two sisters.
It was Mr. Smith’s request that cremation take place and no services be held.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Pauline C. Mazzulla

Pauline C. Mazzulla, Denver, died Aug. 20, 2003.
She was born June 8, 1910, in Salida.
She is survived by brothers, Ralph (Betty) Mazzulla and John Mazzulla and by numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, great-grand-nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3020 Federal Blvd, Denver.
Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 3549 Navajo St., Denver.
Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Denver.

LaGurna J. Norton

LaGurna J. Norton 75, Ordway and formerly of Salida, died Aug. 18, 2003, at Crowley County Nursing Center, Ordway.
Mrs. Norton was born March 21, 1928, north of Boone, to Dhu Wright and Ressa Bealmer Wright
At Mrs. Norton’s request, there will be cremation after visitation opportunity for family and friends.
A service of remembrance will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fowler Christian Church with Pastor Don Sniff officiating. Private interment of cremains will occur later at Fort Lyon National Cemetery.
Mrs. Norton lived in the area most of her life. She attended Prairie Hill School in Boone, and married Joseph G. Norton Nov. 20, 1947, at Highland Baptist Church.
The family lived in the area until 1965 when they moved to Salida.
They returned to Ordway in 1983, where they have since resided.
Mrs. Norton was a member of Fowler Christian Church and a lifetime member of John Butler Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 336 ladies auxiliary of Ordway.
Survivors include her husband Joe Norton, Ordway; son, Roger J. (Juanita) Norton, Wichita, Kan.; daughters Melinda (R. Wayne) Rusher, Ordway and Marlene (Tony) Machado, Greeley.
She is also survived by a brother Duane (Evelyn) Wright, Fowler; sisters, Joyce Caddell-Hively, Pittsburg, Texas and Zola Bynum, Fowler; sisters-in-law, Josephine Lind of Fort Collins and Shirley Wright of Manzanola; grandchildren, Heath (Amanda) Rusher and Kelli Jo Rusher, Ordway; Brandy (Bob) Edmonds, Kersey and Tanner Machado, Fort Collins.
Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Aug. 21, and will be from 2-6 p.m. today at Griffy Family Funeral Home Chapel in Ordway.
The family requests memorial contributions to the Crowley County Ambulance Service. Memorials may be made directly or through Griffy Family Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Elizabeth Slaughter

Wilma Elizabeth Slaughter of Tempe, Ariz., died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Friendship Village Care Center at age 88.
Mrs. Slaughter was born Wilma Elizabeth Hewit on May 18, 1915, in Gary, Ind. She was a 1937 graduate of Franklin College in Franklin, Ind., and married Robert E. Slaughter on Sept. 2, 1938, in Hammond, Ind.
After Bob graduated from Colgate Rochester Divinity School, she traveled with him to ministerial posts in Cleveland, Ohio (1940-51); Minneapolis, Minn. (1951-54), Rochester, N.Y. (1954-59); Arlington, Mass. (1959-67); Worcester, Mass. (1967-68) and Cincinnati, Ohio (1968-80).
Mrs. Slaughter, or “Willie” as she preferred to be called, was intimately involved in church work: singing in church choirs, leading Christian women’s groups and, a particular passion of hers, teaching young couples to budget their money.
In 1980, the couple retired and moved to Arizona.
Mrs. Slaughter was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, in 2000.
Surviving are sons Ronald (Carol) Slaughter of Salida and Raymond (Kim) Slaughter of Golden; and grandchildren Alison (Eric) Newcomer, Kayt (Jeremy) Pourbaix, Rachael and Jessica Slaughter.
A memorial service is set for 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Friendship Village, Tempe, Ariz.

Gertrude Joy Thompson

Gertrude Joy Thompson died Aug. 29, 2003, in Cincinnati Ohio, with her husband, Warren, at her bedside.
She was born to Isabella and Linius Rogers on Jan. 20, 1926, in Houston, Texas.
She married Warren Thompson in 1944 and they would have celebrated their 59th anniversary in November.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by her husband, Warren and their children, Jim (Stephanie), Buena Vista and Suzanne, Cincinnati, Ohio; a cousin and sister-in-law, both in Louisiana and a niece in Texas.
She was preceded in death by a son, Barry, in 1998; her parents and her brother, Ozzie.
She has three grandsons from her son, Barry, and his wife, Susie: Christopher, Kenny and Mark and a grandson and the only granddaughter from her daughter, Suzanne: Jordan and Kayla.
Mr. and Mrs. Thompson lived in Houston and later moved to Midland, Texas.
Mrs. Thompson was actively involved in the Cat Fanciers Association for almost 50 years. She bred Persian cats, Russian Blues and Scottish Folds. She enjoyed cooking.
Mr. and Mrs. Thompson moved to Buena Vista in 1987 and had a home built in the first filings of the Game Trail Subdivision, north of Buena Vista.
She was involved in the 55 Alive program, the American Association of Retired Persons, agricultural commodities program, was a Eucharistic minister at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Buena Vista and was active in the Democratic Party.
She had many friends in Chaffee County and was very fond of her friend and physician, Dr. Mary Reeves.
No local services are planned and a memorial service will be held later in Houston, Texas.
