Vicki Lynn Lewis

Graveside services for Vicki Lynn Lewis, a resident of Ramah, N.M. will be held in Ramah Friday, July 14, at 1 p.m.

Vicki passed away at Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque on Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at the age of 34. She was born in Butte, Mont. on June 23, 1966.

Surviving Vicki are her husband, Irvin Lewis of Ramah; son, Colt Pratt of Cortez; daughter, Charli, of Evanston, Wyo.; her parents, Kenneth and Maxine Clinger of Cortez; sisters, Denise Arruda and family of Dolores; Julie Clinger of Provo, Utah; mother-in-law Varis Lewis of Ramah; grandparents, Charles and Annie Hinton of Cortez; Darwin and Arlean Clinger of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and many uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Services will be under the direction of Rollie Mortuary of Gallup, N.M.

John Miller 'Jack' Bircher

Memorial services for John Miller "Jack" Bircher, 90, of Mancos, will be held Wednesday, July 12, at the Mancos First United Methodist Church beginning at 10 a.m. A private burial service will be held for the immediate family only.

Jack passed away on July 8, 2000, in Aztec, N.M. He was born on July 10, 1909 to Elizabeth (Miller) and Gustave Bircher. Jack married Avis L. Culbertson on May 27, 1942 in Cheyenne, Wyo. They lived in Denver, Colo. for a short time while Jack worked at the Remington Munitions Plant as a foreman. Following that, they returned to Mancos, where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Jack is survived by his son, John E. Bircher, and his wife, Wendy; and his only grandchild, Matthew John Bircher, all of Farmington, N.M. His wife, Avis; parents, Elizabeth and Gustave; and sister Barbara, preceded him in death.

Jack was devoted to his family and was an honest man willing to help others in any way he could. Jack loved and farmed his own land for over 50 years. His kind spirit and the stories he loved to tell will be dearly missed by his family.

The family requests that memorial contributions in John Bircher's memory be sent to the Future Farmers of America (FFA). Please designate FFA/VoAg, San Juan Basin Technical School, P.O. Box 970, Cortez, CO 81321.

Alva Nell Caler

Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident, Alva Nell Caler, will be held Thursday, July 13, at the Cortez First United Methodist Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. She passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home on Sunday, July 9, 2000, at the age of 95.

Alva is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Elijah Blair of Cortez; three grandchildren and their families; and family members, Brad Morrison of Moab, Utah, and Denise Morrison of Louisville, Ky. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren; one sister, and one brother.

Memorial contributions can be made in Alva Caler's name with the Cortez First United Methodist Church. Ertel Funeral Home will be in charge of the services.

Tina Marie Papoff

Funeral services for Tina Marie Papoff, 28, of Lewis, will be held Thursday, July 13, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will be held at the Arriola Cemetery.

Tina passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2000 in Cortez as the result of an automobile accident.

She is survived by her husband, Kevin Papoff, children Jace and Trisha, a brother, two sisters, her grandparents, friends, and numerous aunts, unciles, cousins and friends.

Memorial contributions can be made in Tina Papoff's name at the Citizens State Bank of Cortez.

Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.

Yvonne Berdeen Wilkerson

Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident, Yvonne Berdeen Wilkerson, will be held Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Cortez Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the Cortez Cemetery. Bishop Danny Decker will be conducting.
Yvonne was born to Orland LeGrand Hansen and Hazel Irene (Olsen) Hansen in Spring City, Utah, on Nov. 5, 1929, the sixth of eight children. She passed away at her home in Cortez on Saturday, July 1, 2000. She was 70 at the time of her death.
After graduating from high school, Yvonne got a job in a sewing factory in Salt Lake City, Utah where she met and married Edwin Isaac Wilkerson on May 3, 1952. To this union seven children were born.
She is survived by her husband, Ed Wilkerson of Cortez; her children, Edwin Thomas Wilkerson and his wife, Lenda Jean, of Cortez; Sharlene Hansen and her husband Gerald Edwin Hansen Jr., of Rexburg, Idaho; Steed Wilkerson and his wife, Kathy, of Cortez, and Karen Wilkerson also of Cortez; and 22 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Three infant daughters preceded Yvonne in death, Debra Ann, Cheryl Dawn, and Karol Wilkerson. A brother, Veldon J. Hansen of Fredonia, Ariz.; and two sisters, Anna Cloward of Moroni, Utah, and Ina Larson of Sandy, Utah also survive Yvonne.
Memorial contributions can be made in Yvonne Wilkerson's name with the Huntsman Cancer Center, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Homes.

Betsy Ann Martin

Betsy Ann Martin, a student at Montezuma-Cortez High School, and resident of Cortez, passed away July 2. She was 18.

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, July 9, at 2 p.m. in the Lighthouse Baptist Church, 11502 Highway 145 Cortez. Brother Don Smith will officiate the services. Interment will follow the services in the Towaoc Cemetery, with reception to follow at the Towaoc Gym.

Betsy Ann Martin is survived and will always be loved and remembered by her parents, Alvin Sr. and Bessie Scott Martin of Cortez; brothers, Alvin and wife, Shelli of Cortez; Elvin Martin of Cortez, Robert Martin of Sterling, Colo., and Herman Scott of Towaoc; sisters, Mary Jane Martin and her husband, Elroy; Virginia Yazzie and husband, Milton of Cortez; and Louanai Martin of Cortez She is also survived by several aunts, uncles and friends.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Alvina Martin; brother, Peter Scott, and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Betsy Ann Martin Memorial Fund, in care of Vectra Bank, Cortez.

Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale and Gerken, Funeral Directors are serving the family.

William Jackson Gray

Funeral services for William Jackson Gray, a resident of Mancos, will be held Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Mancos First Baptist Church beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Pastor Paul K. Wilson will be officiating. Military honors will be conducted at graveside by the John Derrick Halls Post #5231. Visitation will be held Thursday morning at the Ertel Memorial Chapel between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon.

William passed away at his home in Mancos on Saturday, July 1, 2000, at the age of 79. He was born in Blythe, Calif., on Feb. 23, 1921, the son of William Edward Gray and Ethel Lillian (Thomas) Gray.

During World War II, William served his country in the Navy. On June 25, 1948, William was united in marriage to Joyce Edna Gladden in Chandler, Ariz. William was a member of the First Baptist Church and he loved to fish, garden and hunt arrowheads.

Surviving him is his wife of 52 years, Joyce Gray, of Mancos; his children and their spouses, William E. and Patricia Gray of Chino Valley, Ariz., John M. and Karen Gray of Mancos, Tricia Anne and Ronald C. Womack of Mancos, and Betty Jo and Robert Luthins of Farmington, N.M. His grandchildren, William Gray, Nicole Gray, Jared and Jamie Pearce, Joey Gray, James Gray, Marty and Michele Archibeque, Ty Gray, Daven Womack, Steve Womack, Chris Robbins, Shane Robbins, and Christina Farver; and three great-grandchildren survive him. William is also survived by two brothers, Clyde Gray of Payson, Ariz., and Chester Gray of Chandler, Ariz.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of William Gray at the First National Bank in Mancos. Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.

Ivane Lewis Capitan

Services for Ivane Lewis Capitan, 26, of Cortez, will be held Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Roy Lee Church in Aneth, Utah beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the family cemetery in Aneth.

Ivane passed away in Aneth on Sunday, July 2, 2000, as the result of an automobile accident. She was born in Cortez on July 6, 1973, the daughter of Jimmy Capitan and Hazel (Lewis) Capitan.

Ivane attended school in Cortez and had worked as a cashier for several businesses. She was a lifelong resident of Cortez.

She is survived by her mother, Hazel Capitan of Cortez; a four-year-old son, Bowen Lee Lewis, also of Cortez; two sisters, Laverne Hamm and her husband, Terrance, of Dolores, and Yvonne Pipe of Cortez; and a brother, Ivan Lewis also of Cortez. Ivane is survived by her maternal grandmother, Sarah Lewis; five nieces and nephews, Taylor and Tanner Hamm, Caleb Lewis, and April and Shannon Lewis; and by her aunts and uncles, Violet Billie, Estella Lewis, Elbert Lewis, Wallace Lewis, Jerry Lewis, Leo Lewis, Lillie Lewis, Mary Dawes, Melvin Capitan, Minnie Weston, and Nelson Capitan.

Preceding Ivane in death were her father, Jimmy Capitan; maternal grandfather, Lee Lewis; and paternal grandparents, Sam and Jessie Capitan.

Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting her services.

Martell 'Marty' Price

Martel White Eagle Price, a lifelong resident of Towaoc, passed away July 2, 2000, at his residence. He was 12 years old.

Funeral services are set for Saturday, July 8, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Cortez-Four Corners Funeral Chapel. Sister Lois Wooten and Rev. Fred Smith of Fort Duchesne, Utah, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Towaoc Cemetery.

A visitation was held on Friday, July 7, at the funeral chapel.

Martel was born on Feb. 16, 1988, to Lewis Edwin Sr. and Nola Lee Laner Price in Cortez. He had attended school in Cortez.

Martel enjoyed listening to country-western music and gospel music. He especially enjoyed the band "Kentucky Headhunters." Another of his enjoyments was listening to Norman Lopez’s program on Sundays, and the traditional music of the Ute Mountain Ute tribe. Martel looked forward to playing with his brothers and sisters, and enjoyed being with his relatives, especially his uncle, Neal Lang.

Martel White Eagle Price is survived and will always be loved by his parents, Lewis and Nola of Towaoc; brothers, Lewis Jr. and Montel of Towaoc; sisters, Venita, Trisha and Tanisha, all of Towaoc; aunts, Emily Nez, Wahella Begay, Gaylyne Laner, Sandy Laner, Annabell Laner, Clarissa Laner, Joanna Laner, Berneta Laner, Jancie Gallegos, and Lori Laner; uncles, George Wells Jr., Johnny Laner, Byron Laner, James Price, Ernest Price, Wayne Marsh, Cecil Tabbee and Neal Lang. He is also survived by many cousins and friends of the family.

Cortez-Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale and Gerken funeral Directors, are serving the family.

Robert Dean Randolph

Funeral services for former Cortez resident, Robert Dean Randolph, will be held Monday, July 10, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m.

Military Honors will be presented by the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. Cremation is to follow with interment to be held at the Cortez Cemetery.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday afternoon between the hours of 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Ertel Chapel.

Bob was born in Eminence, Mo., on Oct. 16, 1932, the son of Ralph Randolph and Maude Young) Randolph. He passed away here in Cortez on Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the age of 67.

Surviving Bob is his wife, Kathleen (Cash) Randolph of Boise, Ida.; his children and their spouses, Christine and John Terry of Boise, Ida., and R.D. and Carol Randolph of Mumford, Tenn.; and five grandchildren. Bob also leaves behind two sisters, Ruth Ferguson of Cortez, and Judy Lawson of Clovis, N.M.; and two brothers, Kenneth Randolph of Dove Creek, and Paul Randolph of Avondale, Ariz.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Both his parents preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Robert Randolph with the Dove Creek Ambulance Fund or the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75.

Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Beuna Mae Burris

Funeral services for Beuna Mae Burris will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Evans Funeral Home in Houston, Mo., at 1 p.m. Pastor Eugene Earp will officiate. Interment will follow at the Ellis Prairie Cemetery in Houston.

There will be a viewing at the Ertel Memorial Chapel in Cortez on Thursday, Jan. 4, between 2 and 5 p.m.

Beuna Mae Burris was born to William Thomas and Missouri Adaline (Walker) Hill in Marshfield, Mo., on Dec. 18, 1908. She passed away on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos, at the age of 92.

Beuna Mae was wed to John Burris in February 1930 in Houston, Mo. John passed away in May 1982. Beuna loved to quilt, garden and raise flowers. She was a faithful member of the First Southern Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Johnney (Cretia) Burris of Cortez; grandchildren, Joseph Franklin (Myra) Burris of Cortez; Johnney Wayne (Ginny) Burris, also of Cortez, and Donna Marie (Rick) Weems of Corinth, Texas. Also surviving her are her 13 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She leaves behind one sister, Hazel Merritt, of Dewey, Okla., as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved spouse, three sisters and three brothers.

Local arrangements are being handled through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Little Bill Goforth

Funeral services for Little Bill Goforth, a longtime Dove Creek resident, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Dove Creek Assembly of God Church beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Marvin Pemberton will officiate. Interment will follow at the Peel Cemetery.

Little Bill was born the son of Blufford and Allie Goforth in Shannon County, Mo., on June 20, 1901. He passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000.

A daughter, Helen Knuckles of Egnar; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren survive Little Bill. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lucille (Hicks) Goforth.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Bill Goforth with the Dove Creek Ambulance Fund. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
