Betty S. Filener
December 26, 1925 - July 31, 2003
GRAND JUNCTION - Former Delta resident, Betty S. Filener, died on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at her residence in Grand Junction, Colorado. She was 77.
Graveside funeral services for Betty will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Garden of Memories Cemetery
in Crawford, Colorado. Pastor
Doug Williams will officiate.
Betty Sue Williams was born on December 26, 1925, to Claude and Hassie (Smith) Williams in Missouri. She spent her childhood in Missouri and also Colorado. She attended high school in Olathe.
On June 3, 1944, Betty married Harvey Davis Filener in Delta, Colorado. He preceded her in death on June 12, 1999 in Grand Junction, Colorado. They lived in Washington State, Alaska, Kansas, and California before retiring in Delta, Colorado, in 1981. She and her husband moved to Grand Junction in 1989.
Betty enjoyed collecting nic nacs, and making craft items for her home.
Those grateful to have shared in Betty’s life include two daughters: Jean Madrid, and Gail L. Giandonato and her husband Tony all of Grand Junction, Colorado; two brothers: Wendell Williams, and Raymond Williams and his wife Loretta all of Washington State. She is further survived by five grandchildren and one great - grandchild.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey; one brother; and two sisters.

Thelma L. Kirks
September 21, 1911 - July 30, 2003
Olathe - Olathe, Colorado, long time (72years) resident, Thelma L. Kirks, age 91 died July 30, 2003 at Crossroads Assisted Living Facility in Delta where she lived for nearly a year.
Thelma Lois Ahrendt was born September 21, 1911 near Bertha, Minnesota to Albert and Mathilda Ahrendt. Thelma lived in Hewitt, Minnesota, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and in Wichita and Norton, Kansas, before moving to Colorado. Her father was a minister in the Church of God and was the pastor in all the above locations except Norton, Kansas where he spent nearly a year in a facility for treatment of tuberculosis.
Thelma graduated from Norton Community High School in June, 1930. She then moved with her parents to Olathe in September of 1930.
Thelma married Bert Ellis Kirks on April 4, 1931 in Olathe. Bert was a coal dealer for many years. Thelma was a homemaker, enjoyed music, playing the piano, sewing and was a Christian dedicated to her church. She played the organ and piano at church for over 60 years. She worked at the Olathe City Hall for twenty years serving as assistant clerk and briefly as Town Clerk before her retirement in 1974.
Thelma served as a pink lady volunteer at the Delta County Memorial Hospital about seven years. When her daughters were small her home was open to many ministers’ families who held services at the Church of God. She enjoyed cooking and having relatives to share a meal. Thelma was known for her sense of humor and smile. She enjoyed teasing and laughing with people.
Survived by two daughters, Nancy Bradford, (Mrs. James) of Anderson, Indiana and Judy Trentaz, (Mrs. Fred) of Lakewood, Colorado. She is further survived by four grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Bert Kirks; her parents, Albert and Mathilda Ahrendt; two brothers, Myrl Ahrendt and Kenneth Ahrendt; and one sister, Vivian Ahrendt.
Services will be at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, Colorado at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2003. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Internment will be at Olathe Cemetery
at noon.

Marian Elaine Tadus
February 11, 1909 - July 29, 2003
ECKERT - Former Denver and Glenwood Springs resident, Marian Elaine Tadus, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at the Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 82.
Services will be held at a later date in Raton, New Mexico.
Marian Elaine Sego was born June 8, 1921,in Kansas City, Missouri, to the late Earl and Lura (Poe) Sego. She spent her childhood in Kansas City and graduated from high school at Central High School there with the class of 1938.
On May 19, 1943, in Kansas City, Marian was joined in marriage to William J. Tadus. He preceded her in death on December 5, 1976, in Raton, New Mexico. Marian and Bill had owned and operated Harris Jewelry Store in Rifle, Colorado, and Tadus Jewelry in Raton, New Mexico. Mrs. Tadus spent several years in Raton before moving to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, in 1995. She then moved to Denver before coming to Eckert in June of this year.
She was a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Aurora, Colorado, and had attended St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Cedaredge. Marian enjoyed doing volunteer work and spending time with her family.
Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Muldowney and husband Frank of Eckert, CO; one son, Rick Tadus and wife Marsha of Glenwood Springs, CO; two sister - in - laws: Sharon Sego of Milwaukee, WI, and Sylvia Sego of Mexico. Marian is further survived by two grandchildren: Markee Swank and husband Eliot of Greeley, CO, and Kevin Tadus of Rochester, MN.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Dick Sego and a half brother, Gene Sego.

Ferle M. Buchite
May 7, 1909 - July 27, 2003
Paonia - Paonia resident, Ferle M. Buchite, died on Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 94.
Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the Cedar Hill Cemetery
in Paonia, Colorado. James Gall will officiate.
Ferle M. Rogers was born on May 7, 1909, to the late John W. and Julia (Cooper) Rogers in Glenville, West Virginia. Her family moved to Colorado when she was ten months old. She had been a Paonia resident for more than 63 years.
On October 6, 1940 in Montrose, Colorado, Ferle married David Theodore Buchite. He preceded her in death on January 20, 1987 in Paonia, Colorado.
Mrs. Buchite was an active member of the First Christian Church in Paonia and a member of the Auxiliary at Wilson - Head American Legion Post, she had just received her fifty - eight year award. Ferle held all offices within that organization. Her interests were hunting, fishing and going to the hills with her husband. Ferle was also very social in the community.
Those grateful in sharing her life are four nephews: Keith Ensley of Laramie, WY; Kenneth Ensley of a town near Mobile, AL; and Jack Rogers and Jerry Rogers both of Seattle, WA.
Ferle was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother Frank Rogers and a sister Fern Ensley.

Bertha Mae Campbell
August 26, 1907 - July 19, 2003
OREGON - Former longtime North Fork resident, Bertha M. Campbell, died on Saturday, July 19, 2003, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. She was 95.
Memorial services will be held for Bertha at 10:00 a.m., on Sunday, August 3, 2003 at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, Colorado. James Gall will officiate. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery
at Paonia, Colorado.
Bertha Mae Carlson was born on August 26, 1907, to the late Axel and Hattie (Dahl) Carlson in Sopris, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Sopris and Midway, Colorado and attended school in Paonia.
In June of 1932, in Grand Junction, Colorado Bertha married Clyde “Mickey” Campbell. He preceded her in death on December 7, 1996 in Delta, Colorado.
Bertha was a member of the Hotchkiss Emblem Club and the Midway Club. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, family activities, along with ranching and gardening.
Those grateful in sharing Bertha’s life are a daughter, Sharon Kelley and her husband Mike of Aloha, Oregon; three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Gary Kelley and one sister, Ethel Swan.

Manuel S. Ortiz
June 17, 1914 - July 24, 2003
PAONIA - Longtime Paonia resident, Manuel S. Ortiz, died on Thursday, July 24, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was 89.
Graveside funeral services will be held for Mr. Ortiz at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Delta City Cemetery, Delta, Colorado.
Manuel S. Ortiz was born on June 17, 1914, to Martin and Sebastians (Santillanes) Ortiz in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The family moved to the Delta area when he was a small child. He lived in Delta and attended school there.
On August 8, 1938, Manuel married Ermalinda Herrera in Delta, Colorado. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in August. In 1944, they moved to Paonia, and have resided there since that time.
Mr. Ortiz worked for the railroad, a job he loved doing. He was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness church.
Those grateful to have shared in Manuel’s life include his wife, Ermalinda Ortiz of Paonia, CO; two sons: Gene Ortiz and his wife Marilyn of Paonia, CO, and Emil Ortiz and his wife Ingrid of Superior, CO; a daughter, Martha Emmons of Denver, CO; and a nephew, Joe Gonzales of Albuquerque, NM. He is further survived by seven grandchildren; and four great - grandchildren.
Manuel was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and one brother.

Dan G. Emmons
Sept. 26, 1928 - July 24, 2003
PAONIA - Life long Paonia resident, Dan Glen Emmons, died on Thursday, July 24, 2003, at his home. He was 74.
A visitation for family and friends is planned for Monday, July 28th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia. A funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 29th at the Taylor Chapel in Paonia. James Gall will officiate. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery
at Paonia, with members of the U.M.W.A. #6417 performing graveside rites.
Dan Glen Emmons was born on September 26, 1928, in Paonia, Colorado, to the late Robert Harvey and Estella Ella (Harding) Emmons. He spent his entire life residing in the home in which he was born.
On July 1, 1957, in Hotchkiss, Colorado, he was joined in marriage to Charlotte J. Gillam. She survives.
Dan was a retired coal miner. He spent 35 years in the mining industry before retiring from Western Slope Carbon in Somerset, Colorado, in 1979. It was then, that he and his family owned and operated the Neighborhood Pizza Parlor in Paonia for 20 years.
He was a member of the United Mine Workers Association #6417. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and most of all spending time with his beloved family.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Charlotte J. Emmons, of Paonia; three daughters: Derrinda Emmons of Paonia, Danette Velasquez and husband Luis of Lakewood, Colorado and Sandra Renwick and husband Paul of Grand Junction; two brothers: Maurice Emmons and wife Ruth and Russell Emmons and wife Shirley, all of Paonia; three sisters: Edna Sharp of Aurora, Colorado, Winifred Lane of Paonia and Nelda Hunt of Tucson, Arizona. Dan is further survived by two granddaughters, Krystal and Brittany Renwick and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by six brothers, Carl, Gene, Dick, Ted, Horace and Boyd; and two infant brothers and one infant sister.

William “Bill” L. Widener
April 21, 1923 - July 23, 2003
CEDAREDGE - William “Bill” L. Widener, of Cedaredge, Colorado, died on Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at his residence. He was 80.
William L. Widener was born on April 21, 1923, to Elijah and Hennrietta (Nicks) Widener in Stoneham, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Weldon Valley and Fort Morgan. He attended schools at Goodrich and Weldon Valley and graduated in 1941.
Bill was married to Norma Cool, and to this union two sons and two daughters were born. This marriage was later dissolved. Bill then married Avis Abbott. She preceded him in death.
In 1978, Bill moved to Dear Lodge, Montana, and resided there until 1999. He moved to Cedaredge, Colorado, in 1999, where he lived with his niece, Pat McAlister - Carver, and family for the past five years.
Bill served as a United States Marine in World War II. He became a print setter in the printing business and was also a farmer. His interests included fishing, waterskiing, cooking, and remodeling homes.
Those grateful to have been a part of Bill’s life include two sons: William Widener, Jr. and his wife Joette of Pawnee, OK, and Gary Lee Widener of Denver, CO; two daughters: Sharon Turner and her husband Terry of Lamar, CO, and Karen Sue Widener of Denver, CO; three sisters: Thelma Musser and Dorothy McAlister both of Ft. Morgan, CO, and Edith Sankey of Denver, CO. He is further survived by seventeen grandchildren; and six great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents: Lige and Etta Widener; his wife, Avis; two brothers: Harry and Elmar Widener; and one sister, Virginia Marvin.
No services will be held.

Burnetta E. Peterson
January 27, 1911 - July 20, 2003
FRUITA - Former Longtime Paonia resident, Burnetta E. Peterson, died on Sunday, July 20, 2003, at The Oaks, in Fruita, Colorado. She was 92.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., on Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, July 24, 2003, at the Paonia Christian Fellowship Church in Paonia, Colorado. James Gall and Larry Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery
in Paonia.
Burnetta E. Day was born on January 27, 1911, to Omar and Sarah (Markwell) Day in Kingman, Kansas. She spent her childhood in Sherman County, located in Western Kansas. She attended school at Ruleton, Kansas. In 1954, she left Sherman County and came to Paonia, where she resided until April of 2000, at which time she moved to Fruita.
On May 7, 1929, Burnetta married Vernia Peterson in Goodland, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 23, 1997, in Paonia.
Burnetta was a homemaker and she also worked for School District #50 in Food Services. She belonged to the Cowbelles, North Fork Horse Patrol, the Women’s Guild at her church, and volunteered for RSVP. She was also involved in many church activities, enjoyed crocheting, and her family was a very important part of her life.
Survivors grateful to have shared in Burnetta’s life include a daughter, Velda Bailey and her husband Charles “Bud” of Grand Junction, CO; a sister, Nina Schnell of North Platte, NE; and two grandchildren: Larissa Lynn Bailey of Laurel, MD, and Tiffany Ann Bailey of Thornton, CO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernia; one sister; and one brother.
