Velma B. “Vee” Stinson
April 29, 1923 — January 21, 2004
Velma B. “Vee” Stinson of Parachute died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at home with family in Carbondale. She was 80.
A celebration of her life will be held in the coming months. For information, contact either of Mrs. Stinson’s daughters.
Mrs. Stinson was born April 29, 1923, in Mazie, Ky., to Rufus and Rebecca Bailey. She spent her childhood in Kentucky.
She married James L. Stinson on Feb. 4, 1961, in Long Beach, Calif.
They lived in Las Vegas, Nev., and Long Beach, Calif. Mrs. Stinson moved to Parachute a year ago.
During her career, she worked as a real estate broker.
She was a member of the Palm Desert Board of Realtors and the Chaparral Women’s Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif., and was president of the Balboa Power Anchoretts in Balboa, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Stinson, in February 2003; and by a brother, Clarence Bailey.
Mrs. Stinson is survived by daughters and son-in-law Donna Elm of Parachute and Connie and Bud Hickman of Carbondale; by a stepson, Scott Stinson of Huntington Beach, Calif.; by a sister, Ruth Overly of McAllen, Texas; by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and by nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Kay S. Caswell
November 18, 1940 - June 30, 2004
Kay S. Caswell, 63, a longtime resident of Glenwood Springs, passed away June 30, 2004, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
There will be a public funeral service at the First United Methodist Church in Glenwood Springs, Friday, July 9, at 10 a.m. Pastor Robert Sewell will be officiating. A reception is planned at the Glenwood Springs Community Center at 1 p.m. following the service. Visitation will be at Farnum-Holt Funeral Home in Glenwood Springs on Wednesday, July 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Thursday, July 8, from 4 to 9 p.m. A private burial service for family will occur at Rosebud Cemetery
in Glenwood Springs.
Kay was born in Austin, Texas, on Nov. 18, 1940. She was the daughter of Edward Clyde Caswell and Catherine Louise Strohe Caswell. In 1946 she moved with her parents and younger brother, Bill, to Bartlesville, Okla., where her father was a civil engineer for Phillips Petroleum Co. Kay graduated from College High School in Bartlesville in 1958. She attended the University of Oklahoma, where she graduated from the Oklahoma School of Nursing and became a registered nurse in 1963.
After college, Kay was drawn to Colorado as staff nurse for the Easter Seal Handicamp, a summer recreational camp for children with disabilities near Georgetown. She later worked as a registered nurse for Jane Phillips Memorial Hospital in Bartlesville, Okla.; Children's Hospital in Denver; Aspen Valley Hospital in Aspen; and Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. She worked for several private doctors and Rocky Mountain Home Health Care in Glenwood Springs for a few years while raising her four children.
Kay also spent many years as the camp nurse for the Methodist church camp on Grand Mesa.
As one of the original employees hired to establish the Glenwood Springs Wal-Mart in 1987, Kay worked in many capacities during her 17 years of service. She was proud of being employed by the largest corporation in the world and also enjoyed the interpersonal relationships she developed with her customers and fellow employees.
From the age of 8, Kay excelled in music, especially on the marimba. Throughout junior high and high school, she participated with the orchestra and marching band. She played bell lyre with the University "Pride of Oklahoma" Marching Band at events such as college sports halftime bowls. After moving to Colorado, Kay continued to enjoy her music by teaching marimba and performing in the First United Methodist Church, Symphony in the Valley, and the Hot Strings Band in Glenwood Springs for many years.
Kay was involved with a large number of groups and organizations in the valley over the years. She had a sense of adventure and loved the outdoors: skiing, rafting, hiking, and sightseeing. Kay also enjoyed books and movies, and social activities of all kinds. She was a lifetime learner and had a remarkable gift for recalling specific details and events.
Kay is survived by her four grown children: her son, Greg Choate, and his wife, Camille, of San Diego; her son Chuck Choate, and his daughter, Krista, of Evergreen, Colo.; her daughter, Monica Thompson, of Denver; her son, Matt Thompson, and his wife, Brandi, of Evans, Colo.; and her brother, Bill Caswell, and his wife, Rosi, of Bartlesville, Okla.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents in 1998.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers contributions to her memorial fund be made at the Glenwood Springs Wal-Mart.
John Worthington Deer
June 20, 1915 - July 19, 2004
John Worthington Deer, 89, of Neodesha, Kan., died Monday, July 19, 2004, at Golden Keys Nursing Home in Neodesha.
John was born June 20, 1915, in Neodesha. His father, John Wesley Deer, was an early-day real estate man. His mother was Rose Park Deer, a teacher in the Neodesha schools in the early 1900s. John was the eldest of four children. He grew up in Neodesha and graduated from Neodesha High School.
In 1939, John married Ruby Fay Kelly in Independence, Kan. She preceded him in death on Sept. 12, 1952. In 1953, he married Ruth Bleakney Kinyon in Neodesha, where they made their home. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1998.
John was a retired farmer. He had been in the grocery and vegetable greenhouse businesses. He liked farming better, so he started farming in 1936. John served on the state board of the Kansas Crop Improvement Association and was vice president.
He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, Ascension Church, Metro Club and Rotary Club, and was active in forming and serving on the board of the Neodesha Industries, a former member of the school board, and helped start the Neodesha Arts Center.
Survivors include two children, John Michael Deer of Glenwood Springs and Pattie Bailey of Neodesha; grandchildren Kelly Deer of Tulsa, Okla., Sean Wallace and Heath Wallace of Neodesha, Jennifer Brooks of Littleton, Colo., and Heather Leedy of Dyersburg, Tenn.; two stepgrandsons, Tim Harrington of Los Angeles and Chris Harrington of Agoura Hills, Calif.; two stepgranddaughters, Lindley Bailey of San Marcos, Texas, and Geremee Bailey of Decatur, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Bacon of Neodesha, and a brother, Elmer Deer of Hoyt, Kan.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at Ascension Church in Neodesha, with the Rev. Gerald Eytcheson officiating. Burial will follow in the Neodesha Cemetery
under the direction of the Penwell-Gabel Loran Fawcett Chapel in Neodesha.
Visitation hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Loran Fawcett Chapel.

Pierre O. Evans
June 1, 1913 - July 17, 2004
Retired U.S. Army Col. Pierre O. Evans, 81, of Battlement Mesa died July 17, 2004, at the Colorado State Veterans Home in Rifle.
He was born June 1, 1913, in Tawas, Mich., to William S. Evans and Adelaide (Wagener) Evans. He spent his childhood in Duluth, Minn. He attended the University of Minnesota and received his degree in dentistry there in 1935.
Pierre married Lida L. Rothfus in Portland, Ore., on Oct. 8, 1938. They returned to Duluth, where Pierre practiced dentistry until joining the Army in June of 1940. Their first posting was Fort Crook, Neb., now Offut Air Force Base.
Throughout World War II, Pierre served in the southwest Pacific. After the war, he chose to remain in military service, practicing dentistry at various postings, including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where he became a diplomat of the American Board of Prostheodontics, a fellow of the American College of Dentists and a fellow of the New York Academy of Dentistry, Paris American Hospital, Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Aurora, 3rd Division headquarters in Wurzburg, Germany, and Fort Bragg, N.C., where he retired in 1969.
Pierre then spent two years in Florence, S.C., where he established the Dental Assistants and Hygienists Program at Florence/Darlington Technical Education Center. Deciding it was time to retire again, Pierre and his wife returned to Colorado and built a home at Woodmoor in Monument. After a year of relative inactivity, he opened a dental office in Monument, where he practiced for another seven years with his wife at his side as office manager. In 1986, they moved to Glenwood Springs and bought a home at Westbank. Nine years later, they moved to Battlement Mesa, where Lida still resides at their home in Monument Creek Village. As Pierre's health began to fail, he moved first to Mesa Vista Assisted Living and then to the Veterans Home in Rifle.
Pierre belonged to many service organizations over the years, and he was a Mason for more than 50 years. He served with distinction and received many awards and decorations, including the Legion of Merit and the "A" prefix to his MOS, the highest Army award for professional competence, which signifies the recipient is a nationally recognized leader in his field. When practicing general dentistry in Monument after his military retirement, he referred to himself as "just a simple country dentist," but in his heart, he was an Army officer to the end.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lida Evans, and his daughter, Michelle Foster, both of Battlement Mesa, along with three grandsons: Peter Caldwell and his wife, Margie, of Aurora; Jeff Caldwell and his wife, Amy, of Walden, N.Y., and Marc Caldwell and his wife, Melody, of Rifle; and seven great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all.
His daughter, Diane Evans, preceded him in death.

James Guy “Buddy” Moorman Jr.
August 23, 1942 — January 21, 2004
James Guy “Buddy” Moorman Jr. of Glenwood Springs died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004. He was 61.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Eagle’s Club, 312 7th St. in Glenwood Springs.
Mr. Moorman was born Aug. 23, 1942, at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif., to Mozelle and James Guy Moorman. He was the oldest of six children. He attended University High School, where he was president of the Dukes Club.
After graduation, he owned and operated a bar in Topanga Canyon called Big Tom’s. Later, he started a cleaning company with two partners called Mobi Drape. The company expanded into Colorado, where he became the sole proprietor. He ran the business successfully for 20 years.
In later years he followed his passion of creating and designing leather artwork. One of his pieces was a motorcycle covered entirely in leather. His work was shown and admired in many galleries.
Another passion pursued since childhood was his mastery of illusion and magic. He shared that gift by performing hundreds of shows for children and adults.
Mr. Moorman loved life and the company of family and friends. He would help any person in need.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mozelle Moorman; by a brother, Mark Moorman; by sisters Becky LaFerrara and Bottons Tryon; and by a granddaughter, Darby Luark.
Mr. Moorman is survived by his father, James Guy Moorman Sr. of Reseda, Calif.; by a brother, Kent Moorman of Reseda, Calif.; by a sister, Cindy Moorman of Brentwood, Calif.; by daughters Brynn Rials of Florida, Barrie Moorman of Silt, and Torrie Moorman of Glenwood Springs; by a son, Eric Olson of California; by eight grandchildren; and by a longtime companion and friend, LeAnna Atkinson of Glenwood Springs.

Ray Thomson “Pops” Crowley
August 31, 1916 — March 18, 2004
Ray Thomson “Pops” Crowley of Basalt died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. He was 87.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, at the Farnum Holt Funeral Chapel, 405 W. 7th St. in Glenwood Springs. Mr. Crowley’s family will receive friends immediately after the service at the Glenwood Springs Community Center.
Mr. Crowley was born Aug. 31, 1916, in Thomasville to Lula Thomson and Claude Hugh Crowley. He spent his childhood on a ranch in Thomasville and attended elementary school in Thomasville and Meredith. He moved to Glenwood Springs with his brother Jim to attend high school, graduating in 1934.
He married Margaret “Dutch” Aldred. After 49 years of marriage, she preceded him in death.
He later married Gervineer “Chic” Pickett.
Mr. Crowley worked as a lineman for Public Service Co. of Colorado for 35 years, retiring in 1981.
Hunting and fishing were his favorite activities, and he was a familiar sight transporting countless friends and relatives on mountain trails in his red Jeep.
His favorite days were spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who gave him the title of Honorary Mayor of Thomasville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by daughters Susan Kay and Virginia Pearl; by brothers Eugene “Bud” Crowley of Denver and Frank Crowley of Carbondale; by a grandson, Paul Woolsey; and by a son-in-law, Dennis Beitz of Topeka, Kan.

Robert Burton Arrowood
March 3, 1959 — March 25, 2004
Robert Burton “Robbie” Arrowood of Battlement Mesa, a former resident of Glenwood Springs and Spencer, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, after a lengthy illness. He was 45.
A memorial service will be held, according to his wishes, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, at Crown Peak Baptist Church in Battlement Mesa, with pastors Rick van Vleet and Larry Sacca officiating. Another service will be held in Spencer, Iowa, on April 5.
Mr. Arrowood was born March 3, 1959, in Spencer, Iowa, to Ronald Burton Arrowood and Leah “Janie” Mugge Arrowood. He spent his childhood in Spencer, graduated from Spencer High School and attended Oowa Lakes Community College.
He married Barbara Cary on March 4, 1989, in Las Vegas.
Prior to his illness, Mr. Arrowood worked as a plumber in the valley and owned Valley Detailing in Parachute with his wife. After his heart attack in November 2001, Mr. Arrowood coached T-ball, basketball and soccer for the Battlement Mesa/Parachute youth teams.
He enjoyed life, coaching the youth of his community, softball and bowling, and played on many sports teams here and in Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ron and Janie Arrowood.
Mr. Arrowood is survived by his wife, Barbara Arrowood of Battlement Mesa; by son and daughter-in-law Jerrod and Lisa Arrowood, who was like a daughter to Mr. Arrowood, of Rifle; by sons Brandon Swartzendruber, 18, of Mesa, Ariz., and Ryan Arrowood, 9, of Battlement Mesa; by a daughter, Nicole Arrowood, 14, of Battlement Mesa; by sisters and brothers-in-law Linda and Bill McKinley of Glenwood Springs, Penny and Ted Lidman, Debbie and Jerry Marlow, and Leanne Arrowood, all of Spencer; by grandchildren Kylan of Spencer, Kaycee Arrowood, Rylie Arrowood, Mason Arrowood and Avery Arrowood of Rifle; by aunts and uncle Jim and Fran Montgomery, Lenore Elder and Betty Cooper; by three nephews, five nieces, two great-nieces, many cousins and special friends in Colorado and Iowa.

Eleanor Valdez
August 7, 1920 - September 27, 2004
Eleanor Valdez, 84, most recently of Rifle, died Sept. 27, 2004, at Grand River Hospital in Rifle.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at the Rifle Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor James Legg of the First Baptist Church of Garfield County will officiate.
She was a lifetime resident of Silt and a housewife.
She was born Aug. 7, 1920, in Raton, N.M., the daughter of Mike and Flora (Roybal) Chavez. She spent her childhood in Raton.
She married John Manual Valdez on Sept. 1, 1938.
Eleanor at one time sold womenswear. She belonged to the Church of Christ in Questa, N.M., and the Women's Extension Club in Silt. Her greatest love was her grandchildren, and taking them different places; Eleanor was always there for her children no matter what. Her family will always remember the homemade Christmas presents. She loved dancing with her grandpa and doing the polka with her husband. She visited many friends in the nursing home and never forgot them.
Surviving are her sons Bobby Valdez and his wife, Sandy, of Silt, and Arthur Valdez and his wife, Linda, of Helper, Utah; her daughter Dessie Smith and her husband, Dale, of Questa; her brothers Henry and Alex Chavez of Helper; her sister Carmellia Crespin of Helper; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband preceded her in death.

Brian P. Fairman
September 8, 1958 — January 15, 2004
Brian P. Fairman of New Castle died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in Glenwood Springs. He was 45.

Mr. Fairman was born Sept. 8, 1958, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Frances Phyllis DeBaca and Paul Bernard Fairman.
He worked on the Glenwood Canyon project, and was then employed by the Colorado Department of Transportation for the following 17 years.
Mr. Fairman was a man of full honesty, integrity, sincerity, vast intelligence, privacy and a great sense of humor.
He was an avid reader and frequented the Garfield County Branch Library in New Castle, where the staff kept him up to par on the latest reads.
He enjoyed rafting on the Colorado River and golfing with his buddies.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Fairman is survived by brothers and sister-in-law Dale and Robin Fairman of Marysville, Wash., and David Fairman of Albuquerque; by sisters Pamela Fairman and Martha Grant, both of Albuquerque; by a nephew, Pvt. Nicholas Grant, stationed in Germany; by nieces Christina Grant of Boulder, and Jessica Heil and her husband, Michael Heil, of Albuquerque; and by a dear friend, Laurie Sutliff of New Castle.

Jeremy Bohlman
August 1982 - June 7, 2004
Marine Lance Cpl. Jeremy Bohlman, 21, died Monday, June 7, 2004, during hostile action in the Al Anbar region of Iraq.
Bohlman joined the Marines in February 2001. He was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He first went to Iraq in January 2003.
He was on his second tour of duty when he died. Bohlman had found his calling in serving his country and was proud to be a Marine.
He received numerous awards during his service, including the Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
Jeremy Bohlman was born in August 1982 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
He is survived by his wife, Lyndsay, of San Diego, parents Kim and Brad Boldt of Sioux Falls, grandparents Dale and Marlene Stoakes, Bernice and Joyce Boldt, and a large extended family in Sioux Falls; aunt and uncle Cindy and Rick Davis, and cousins Dusty, Cody and Patrick Davis of Glenwood Springs. He is survived by his wife, Lyndsay, of San Diego, parents Kim and Brad Boldt of Sioux Falls, grandparents Dale and Marlene Stoakes, Bernice and Joyce Boldt, and a large extended family in Sioux Falls; aunt and uncle Cindy and Rick Davis, and cousins Dusty, Cody and Patrick Davis of Glenwood Springs.
E. Pauline Bieser
E. Pauline Bieser, 95, Mesa, died Feb. 15, 1999, at Plateau Valley Nursing Home in Collbran. Services 10 a.m. Saturday at Mesa Methodist Community Church. Burial in Mesa-Molina Cemetery.
Mrs. Bieser was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Robert William of Mesa; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mildred L. Campbell, 88, Littleton, died Feb. 16, 1999, at the home of her daughter in Delta. Services 11 a.m. Monday at Chapel Hill Mortuary in Littleton.
Survivors include one son, Don of Grand Junction; one daughter, Sue Seuell of Delta; one sister, Roberta Acker of Golden; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
