Harold Lynn Wells

MONTROSE - Harold Lynn Wells, the son of O.F. Wells and Elsie (Brantley) Wells, was born on Dec. 12, 1937, in Monticello, Ark. He died on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at the age of 61 in his home at Montrose.

Mr. Wells was a retired tire dealer and a Baptist.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Wells' life include his wife, Cornelia Chatham Wells, of McGehee, Ark.; three sons: Timothy Wells, of Salem, Ark.; Terry Wells, of Stuttgart, Ark.; Tony Wells, of Rohwer, Ark.; and six grandchildren.

Other family survivors include his mother, Elsie King, of Tillar, Ark..

Mr. Wells was preceded in death by his father, O.F. Wells.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mr. Wells' life will be officiated by The Rev. Houston Austin on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 10 a.m. from the Stephenson-Dearman Chapel in Monticello, Ark.

Interment will follow the service in the Union Ridge Cemetery at Drew County, Ark., with arrangements being handled under the direction of Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home, Inc. of Monticello, Ark.

Cecil Stevens

TEMPE, Ariz. - Former Montrose resident, Cecil Stevens, age 94, of Tempe, Ariz., died on Friday, Jan. 8, 1999.

Cecil Stevens was born in Cambridge, Ohio, and was employed as a school teacher during his lifetime.

He is survived by two daughters: Judith Carlson and Marilyn Bedford; and one son, Charles Stevens.

Mr. Stevens was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Mr. Steven's life will be officiated on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. from the Friendship Village, 2645 E. Southern, in Tempe, Ariz.

Inurnment of the cremains will be intered in a Montrose Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 S. Dobson Rd., Mesa, Ariz. 85202; telephone (602) 838-5639.

Gabriel Jose "Gabe" Samora

Former Montrose Resident

Oct. 28, 1939 Jan. 7, 1999

CHICO, Calif. - Former Montrose resident, Gabriel Jose "Gabe" Samora, age 59, of Chico, Calif., died on Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in Chico.

Gabriel Jose Samora was born on Oct. 28, 1939, in Lapuente, N.M., the son of Adelaido and Onofre Samora.

At the age of 17, Mr. Samora moved to Montrose where he married Bernice Vigil on Feb. 8, 1963. The couple were blessed with three children.

In 1987, the Samoras established their home in Chico, Calif., where Mr. Samora remained until the time of his death.

He attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Samora's life include his wife of 35 years, Bernice; two daughters: Anita and Valerie; and one son, Lawrence, all of Chico, Calif.

He was the proud grandfather of four grandchildren.

Other family survivors include two sisters: Isabel and Veva Ulibarri, both of Tierra Amarilla, N.M.; and three brothers: Ernesto, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Adelaido and Ray, both of Montrose.

Mr. Samora was preceded in death by both of his parents, two sisters, and one brother.

Visitation for family and friends was held on Sunday, Jan. 10, from 2 to 7 p.m., with the Vigil for the deceased beginning at 7 p.m. at Newton-Bracewell Chico, Calif., Funeral Home Chapel.

Christian Mass in remembrance and to honor Mr. Samora's life was officiated on Monday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Chico, Calif.

Kayanna Rae Pierce

1-Year-Old Delta Girl

Oct. 27, 1997 Jan. 4, 1999

DELTA - Kayanna Rae Pierce was born in Delta, Colo., on Oct. 27, 1997, the daughter of Victor Jay and Bethany Sue (Gerard) Pierce. She died on Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at the age of 1 year in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.

Survivors grateful to have share Kayanna's one year of life include her father, Victor Jay Pierce, of Golden; her mother, Bethany Sue Gerard, of Delta; and two brothers: Jacob Pierce and Jered Pierce, both of Delta.

Other family survivors include Kayanna's grandparents: Mike and Sue Worthington; Melvin Pierce Sr. and Norma Pierce; a great grandmother, Patricia Harris; and a great-great-grandmother, Marguerite Anweiler, all of Delta.

Kayanna is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday, Jan. 9, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Mesa View Mortuary in Delta.

Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Kayanna's life will be officiated by Pastor Don Barnes, of the Pleasantview Baptist Church of Golden, on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m. in the Delta City Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.

Clement C. Huerkamp

An Avid Outdoors Man

March 21, 1908 Jan. 10, 1999

DELTA - Clement C. "Clem" Huerkamp died of a short illness on Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at the age of 90. A frequent visitor to Delta County over the past 30 years, Mr. Clement lived in Delta County the past two years to be near his two sons and their families.

Clement C. Huerkamp was born on March 21, 1908, in Iona, Minn., the son of Francis J. and Theresa Huerkamp. He was the youngest of 12 siblings who all preceded him in death.

Mr. Huerkamp was a farmer in southeastern Minnesota until the Depression and then spent the balance of his working years in the grain elevator business in Avoca and Iona, Minn.

An avid outdoors man, Mr. Huerkamp made extended hunting and fishing visits to Delta County. With his sons, he frequently attended Ducks Unlimited and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation functions in Delta and Montrose.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Huerkamp's life include his wife of 60 years, Margaret Huerkamp, of Slayton, Minn.; two sons: Thomas Huerkamp and wife Mary Lou, of Austin, Colo.; David Huerkamp and wife Peggy, of Delta; and two daughters: Karen Onken, of Slayton, Minn.; and Kathleen Winter, of Sibley, Iowa.

He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services and interment will take place in Minnesota. Local arrangements are being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

Luduvina Alice Hammond

Competitive Ballroom Dancer

Feb. 10, 1910 Jan. 8, 1999

ECKERT - A homemaker, former competitive ballroom dancer, and a foster mother during World War II, Luduvina Alice Hammond, age 88, of Eckert, died on Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in Horizons Health Care at Eckert.

Luduvina Alice De Souza, the daughter of Anthony De Souza and Caroline (Gourlart) De Souza, was born on Feb. 10, 1910, in Hanford, Calif., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.

Miss De Souza married Boyce Silva and the couple enjoyed being competitive ballroom dancers. Mr. Silva preceded his wife in death.

In 1944, Mrs. Silva married Earle D. Hammond in San Diego, Calif. Mr. Hammond preceded his wife in death in 1972 in California.

During World War II, Mrs. Hammond, a homemaker, was a foster mother in San Diego, at times having as many as 30 children in her home. Also during World War II, she wore out the living room carpet teaching neighborhood children how to dance.

Mrs. Hammond moved from San Diego to Delta 12 years ago where she made her home until the time of her death.

Her special interests that she loved and greatly enjoyed during her lifetime were children and being a competitive ballroom dancer with her first husband.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Hominid's life include one son, Norman Silver, of Lemoore, Calif.; and two daughters: Marlene McClure, of Delta; and Jeannine Lupton, of Merced, Calif.

She was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren and the great-grandmother of 13 great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one sister, Adalaide Bettencourt, of San Diego, Calif.

In addition to her parents and her two husbands, Mrs. Hammond was also preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters.

Private Family Services will be held, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.

Janson Michael Greenhow

Greenhows' Infant Son

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Janson Michael Greenhow, the infant son of Tracy and Janner Greenhow of Phoenix, Ariz., died on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, in Phoenix where he was born.

Funeral Services to honor Janson Michael were officiated on Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, from the Carr-Tenney Mortuary Chapel in Tempe, Ariz.

Interment followed the service in the Queen of Heaven Cemetery at Mesa, Ariz.

In addition to his parents, Janson Michael is survived by his maternal grandparents, Frank and Gayle Alvarado, of Nucla; Kathie Freiday, of Tempe, Ariz.; paternal grandparents, Jan and Karen Greenhow, of Prescott, Ariz.; Geri Barcus, of Chandler, Ariz.; maternal great-grandparents, Val and Helen Alvarado, of Montrose; paternal great-grandparents, Don and Bertha Allen, of Ahwatukee, Ariz.; and Edwin Greenhow, of Tucson, Ariz.

Other family survivors include two aunts: Nicole Freiday, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Traci Greenhow, of Chandler, Ariz.; and one uncle, Michael Alvarado, of Lebanon, N.H.

Ethel Ivy Everitt

Lifelong Area Resident

Sept. 20, 1908 Jan. 7, 1999

OLATHE - Ethel Ivy Everitt, age 90, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday evening, Jan. 7, 1999, in the Colorow Care Center at Olathe.

Ethel Ivy was born on Sept. 20, 1908, in Grand Soline, Texas, and was raised by her mother, Valley Beard and stepfather Hicks Whitt.

In 1914, she moved with her family by covered wagon from their home in Grand Soline, Texas, to west Texas. The family continued by railroad to Pueblo, Colo., where she had an aunt.

In 1919 the family homesteaded 10 miles west of Gunnison on Antelope Creek. Ethel received her education and grew to adulthood in Gunnison County.

On July 19, 1926, Ethel married Glen "Moe" Everitt in Crested Butte, Colo. After their marriage, the couple lived in Crested Butte and later near Gunnison where they were engaged in the ranching and livestock business.

In January of 1948, the Everitts moved to the Ridgway area to ranch on Dry Creek. Besides running their own ranching operation, Mr. Everitt also worked for Marie Scott. Mrs. Everitt became the head cook at the Ridgway school in order to "spoil every kid in Ridgway." She enjoyed cooking very much and was an excellent cook and caretaker of her family.

In 1971, the Everitts moved to the Oak Grove area near Montrose where they remained until moving into Montrose. Mrs. Everitt was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 15, 1984, in Montrose.

She was an active member of the Cattlewomen in the Gunnison, Ridgway, and Montrose areas, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Gunnison, Mt. Fayden Rebekah Lodge No. 54, and belonged to the Columbine Club.

Mrs. Everitt loved parties as long as it was not a surprise party. She greatly enjoyed her ceramic group and in her later years enjoyed playing bingo at the care center.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Everitt's life include one son, Raymond Everitt and wife Jean, of Aztec, N.M.; and one daughter, Alice and husband William Kittle, of Montrose.

Mrs. Everitt was the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren: Robert Kittle and Connie Langford, both of Grand Junction; Pamela Warren, of Las Cruces, N.M.; Patricia Russell, of Green River, Wyo.; Mike Everitt, of Chandler, Ariz.; Deborah Kelly, of Powell, Wyo.; Glenda Brabec, of Coal Strip, Mont.; Ronald Kelly, of Billings, Mont.; Eheyl Wood, of Missoula, Mont.; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one brother, John Whitt, of Sultan, Wash.; and five sisters: Hattie Hillier and Bertha Farnham, both of Burlington, Wash.; Willie Armistead, of Mesa, Ariz.; Jean Sullivan, of Rifle; and Annie Flower, of Washington.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Everitt was also preceded in death by one daughter, Glennis Ann Kelly, who died in 1994; and three grandchildren.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 11, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Everitt's life will be officiated by The Rev. Dan Huber on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. from the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Ruby Davis

Longtime Dedicated Teacher

July 27, 1909 Jan. 8, 1999

PAONIA - Longtime Delta County School District teacher, Ruby Davis, age 89, of Paonia, died on Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in the North Fork Medical Clinic at Paonia.

Ruby Fouch was born on July 27, 1909, in Tyrone, Okla., the daughter of Joseph and Frances (Adams) Fouch.

Miss Fouch graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1928 and began teaching school.

On Oct. 4, 1931, Miss Fouch married Claude Davis in Liberal, Kan.

Mrs. Davis received her Colorado Teaching Certificate in 1935 and began her teaching career in the Delta County School District in 1948. She first taught school at Stewart Mesa and then in Paonia for 30 years, retiring in 1973. Mrs. Davis was a dedicated teacher who would do anything to help her students learn.

She was very active in the Friends Church at Paonia, and did volunteer work at the nursing home. She especially enjoyed playing scrabble and doing crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Davis is survived by one son, Cliff Davis and wife, Keita, of Paonia; and one brother, Kingsley Fouch, of Childress, Texas.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents; one sister, Bessie; and her husband, Claude Davis.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 12, just prior to the funeral service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Friends Church in Paonia.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Davis' life will be officiated by Pastor Gaylen Kinser on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. from the Friends Church.

Interment will follow the service in the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Paonia, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.
