Walter W. Campbell
Walter W. Campbell died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at his home in Vista, Calif. He was 95.
Mr. Campbell was born Jan. 24, 1908, in Mulberry, Ark. He spent his early years near Rocky Ford. He worked as a county agricultural agent in Durango and Lyndon, Kan. During the 1960s he worked for the United States Agency for International Development as an agricultural advisor in Iran, Afghanistan, Laos and Korea. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.
"He was much loved by all who knew him," said Lynne Bodle, his daughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Clark Campbell, in 1990.
He is survived by a brother, James Campbell of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Zona Miller of Pueblo; two daughters, Lynne Bodle of Lawrence, Kan., and Nancy Booth of Great Mills, Md.; eight grandchildren, John Bodle of Lawrence, Kan., Cynthia Novelo of Baldwin, Kan., Jane Bodle of New York, Margaret Anne Bodle of Vista, Calif., Lauralyn Bodle of Baldwin, Kan., Dawn Arnold of Houston, Texas, Diana Conatser of Lusby, Md. and Patricia Long of Little Rock, Ark.; and nine great-grandchildren.
Cremation and burial will be at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside, Calif. A family memorial celebration will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Mr. Campbell’s home in Vista, Calif.
Esther M. Shubart
Esther M. Shubart, a Durango resident for 45 years, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango from an extended illness. She was 88.
Mrs. Shubart was born June 6, 1914, in Birmingham, Ala., to Harry and Esther Santmayer.
She was the valedictorian of her graduating class at Central High School in Alabama in 1934. She attended the University of Alabama for two years and Colorado State University for two years, graduating with a degree in child psychology.
She married Rudy Shubart in 1943 in Colorado Springs.
"I thought she was a wonderful person. She had a lot of personality," Mr. Shubart said.
Mrs. Shubart was secretary for the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce for many years, before she and her husband moved to Durango in 1958. She was an active member of the Reading Club, Durango Garden Club and the Community Concert Club.
She is survived by her husband, Rudy.
A memorial and interment of cremains service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Roselawn Cemetery in Pueblo. Family and friends will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Robert Sedgwick ‘Bob’ Beck
Robert Sedgwick "Bob" Beck died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at his home in Durango of natural causes. He was 82.
Mr. Beck was born in Nowata, Okla., on February 14, 1921, the son of John Guy and Helena Gaertner Beck. He grew up in Nowata and graduated from Nowata High School in 1938. He attended Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., and then transferred to the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1942.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force and served with the 489th Bomb Group during World War II. Many years later, Mr. Beck and his wife, Mary Jean, revisited Halesworth, England, where he had been based. He was a sergeant at the time of his honorable discharge in 1945. He returned to his home in Nowata to help run the family business, J.G. Beck Motors, the local Ford dealership.
Mr. Beck married Mary Jean Cory in Nowata on Dec. 21, 1946. He and his family moved to Durango in 1962 where he owned and operated A.A. Ball Realty and Insurance until his retirement in 1984.
Mr. Beck was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Durango Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #507. He had served as both a deacon and elder at the Durango First Presbyterian Church. He was a meticulous craftsman and an avid reader. He enjoyed fishing and spending time at his cabin at Electra Lake with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Marc L. Beck.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jean Beck, of Durango; three sons, Cory Beck of Grand Junction, John Beck of Norman, Okla., and David Beck of Inola, Okla.; five grandchildren, Warren Beck of Boone, N.C., Carissa and Lesha Maag of Norman, Okla., Cory and Ryan Beck of Inola, Okla.; and a sister, Sue Beck of Nowata.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Durango, The Rev. Bill Postler will officiate.

Peaches Deutsch
Bayfield resident Peaches Deutsch died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 74.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Ms. Deutsch was born Jan. 19, 1929, in New York City to Minnie Deutsch.
She served in the U.S. Air Force, and retired as a sergeant. She came to the Bayfield area to live with her friend, Judith Richtsmeier.
No services are scheduled at this time.
Suzette J. Geauthreaux
Suzette J. Geauthreaux died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 35.
Mrs. Geauthreaux was born Aug. 10, 1967, in New Orleans, La., the daughter of Gordon and Susan Jeansonne. She married Gilbert Geauthreaux in Pensacola, Fla., in September 1993.
"She was a loving mom, wife and friend and will be greatly missed," said her husband, Gill.
She is survived by her husband, Gill Geauthreaux of Durango; her father, Gordon Jeansonne and her mother, Susan Bourgeois Jeansonne, both of Durango; three children, Zachary Geauthreaux, Logan Geauthreaux and Sadie Geauthreaux, all of Durango; two brothers, Mark Jeansonne of Durango and Jack Jeansonne of Austin, Texas; and two sisters, Noelle Jeansonne of New Orleans, La., and Lauri Korp of Phoenix, Ariz.
A memorial Mass will be at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate.

Daniel Patrick Powers
Daniel Patrick Powers died Saturday, March 22, 2003, after an auto accident. He was 34.
Mr. Powers was born Oct. 30, 1968, in Los Angeles, Calif. He was a Colorado resident by choice. He loved the outdoors, including snowboarding at Wolf Creek Ski Area, skateboarding, fishing and camping.
"He was very devoted to his wife and children; they were his life," said his wife, Heather.
Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Heather Powers, and his children, Sidney Powers and Vanessa Powers, all of Durango; his parents, Paula and Dan Reid of Palmdale, Calif.; and his grandmother, Helen Langford of Placerville, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. today at the Fort Lewis College Chapel. Family and friends will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
Danny Eugene Sharp
Danny Eugene Sharp, of Ignacio, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at the home of his mother and stepfather, Francis and Amos Harralson, of Fair Grove, Mo. He was 56.
The cause of death was cancer.
Mr. Sharp is survived by his wife, Linda Sharp of Ignacio; a son, Brandon Cramer of Fenton, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Michelle Wartman and Lori Lucero, both of Ignacio; three grandsons, Kasey Lucero, Kyle Lucero and Arik Wartman, all of Ignacio; one granddaughter, Crystal Wartman of Ignacio; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, Larry Sharp of Mindenmines, Mo., Rick Sharp and Jeff Sharp, both of Fair Grove, Mo.; two sisters, Barbara Barley of Ashbury, Mo., and Becky McCurry of Fair Grove, Mo.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Greenlawn Funeral Home in Springfield, Mo. Burial was at Mount Comfort Cemetery in Green County, Mo.
Harold Neil Wolf
Harold Neil Wolf died in his Arboles home on Thursday, March 20, 2003, of the myelodys plastic syndrome, a type of cancer. He was 78.
Mr. Wolf was born in Lawn, Texas, on June 17, 1924, to Robert and Alameda Foster Wolf. He was married Dec. 28, 1948, in Aztec to Carolyn Duran. He served as a Naval aviator in the Naval Air Corps and was a World War II Veteran. He owned his own business, Front Range Exploration Co. When he retired, he moved from Denver to Arboles in 1984. In Arboles, he was a water-plant operator for several years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling and the Denver Broncos.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Wolf, of Arboles; two daughters, Lynn Stuntez and Debby Sorensen, both of Loveland; two sons, Sid Wolf of Englewood and Stan Wolf of Pagosa Springs; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Rosa Cemetery in Arboles. The Rev. Louis Day, of Durango Funeral Options, will officiate.

Richard ‘Jack’ Tregellas
Richard "Jack" Tregellas died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Corpus Christi Medical Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, of natural causes. He was 87.
Mr. Tregellas was born March 16, 1915, in Liberal, Kan., the son of Edward and Trela Blanche (Pennington) Tregellas. He married Pearline Littleton on Nov. 16, 1934, in Albuquerque. He was a farmer and rancher in the Chama, N.M., area for 62 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling with his wife.
He is survived by his wife, of Chama; a daughter, Jackie Lewis of Lexington, Mo.; a son, Dick Tregellas of Mena, Ark.; six grandsons, Daniel L. Lewis of Bayfield, Scot E. Lewis of Broomfield, Alan Tregellas of Amarillo, Texas, Paul V. Varnes, Steven Varnes and Michael Varnes, all of San Antonio, Texas; two granddaughters, Sandra Carden of Amarillo, and Deborah Varnes of San Antonio; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Gaye Wellborn will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Leon Rottersman
Leon Rottersman, a psychologist and a veteran, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Shalom Park in Aurora. He was 88.
He served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded two Bronze Stars. He earned his AB from New York University, his Master of Arts from the University of Nebraska and his Ph.D. in psychology from DU. He practiced as a staff psychologist at the Toledo State Hospital, Columbus State Hospital, LaCrosse County Child Guidance Clinic, Lansing Child Guidance Clinic and the Southwest Colorado Mental Health Center. He retired from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky., after 18 years as a full professor in the psychology department.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Thelma "Kris" Rottersman; two daughters, Laurie Rottersman of Broomfield and Ann Rottersman of Westerville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Benjamin, Matthew, Rebecca and Zachary; and a brother, Henry Rottersman.
Burial took place March 7, 2003, at Green Mountain Cemetery in Boulder. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
Mary Louise "Lou" Watkins
Mary Louise "Lou" Watkins died Friday, March 14, 2003, at Exempla Lutheran Hospital in Arvada, after a short illness. She was 75.
Mrs. Watkins was born Dec. 24, 1927, in Wheatridge to John Knox Pharis and Mary Pharis. She was raised in Wheatridge.
She married Eugene Conrad Watkins of Longmont on June 13, 1948. She became an Air Force wife and mother. The family lived in Boise, Idaho; Tripoli, Libya; Reno, Nev.; San Bernardino, Calif.; Orlando, Fla.; Tachikawa, Japan; Fresno, Calif.; Newport, R.I.; and Washington, D.C.
Upon her husband’s retirement as a colonel in 1973, they returned to Colorado. She enjoyed tennis, aerobics, bicycle riding, bridge and other family-oriented activities. She enjoyed theater, art museums, books and music. She attended her grandchildren’s sports events and also attended Bronco games.
"Her enthusiasm and optimism for life were infectious, and she lived life truly by the ‘Golden Rule,’" said her son, Gary Watkins, of Durango. "She had an open mind, a big heart and a gentle spirit."
She is survived by her husband; two sons, Gary Watkins of Durango, and David Watkins of Wheatridge; two daughters, Channie Kotzebue of Arvada, and Libby Ranson of Golden; and nine grandchildren, Nicolette and Zachary Watkins, both of Durango, Travis Kotzebue of Seattle, Jordan and Charis Kotzebue, both of Arvada, Kylee Watkins of Wheatridge, and Josh, Jake and Evi Ranson, all of Golden.
A memorial service will be held Monday at the United Arvada Methodist Church. No time for the service was available.
Marilyn Ver Jean Jennings
Marilyn Ver Jean Jennings died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in Pueblo. She was 79.
Mrs. Jennings was born May 22, 1923, in Delhi, Iowa, the daughter of Merle and Marion Rimmer. Mrs. Jennings served in the U.S. Navy during World War. Her service included work as a secretary to an admiral. She married "Red" Jennings in California in 1946, and their family moved to the Marvel area in 1963.
Mrs. Jennings was a secretary for the dean of education at Fort Lewis College for 22 years, retiring in 1989. She enjoyed helping students at FLC further their education, and she enjoyed volunteering in her community at such places as the United Methodist Thrift Shop in Durango. After her husband’s death in 1963, Mrs. Jennings raised their four children as a working mother. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and viewing wildlife.
She is survived by a son, Bart Jennings of Marvel; three daughters, Cynthia Stroup of Brady, Texas, Jill Pascoe of Alamosa and Nancy Copeland of Fouke, Ark.; a sister, Audrey Rowe of Marvel; eight grandchildren, Robin Fox of Graham, Texas, Richard and Jason Pascoe of Alamosa, Jeffery and Traci Jennings of Marvel, Bret Jennings of Grand Junction and Tara and Cassidy Copeland of Fouke, Ark.; five great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives in Marvel and surrounding communities.
"She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother," said her daughter, Jill Pascoe.
Changes have been made in the services for Marilyn Ver Jean Jennings, 79, who died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in Pueblo.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Marvel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bud Rousset will officiate. Burial will be in Marvel at the Marvel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marilyn Jennings Scholarship Fund, Fort Lewis Foundation, Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Dr., Durango, CO 81301.
