Ollie Allen
1920 - 2012

Ollie Allen, 91, of New Haven, departed this life August 29, 2012. She was the widow of Klaip Allen.

Born in Birmingham, AL, December 29, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Agnes Jones.

Mrs. Allen graduated from Parker High School in Birmingham, AL

Prior to retiring, she was employed for over 50 years at Montgomery Ward as a Packer.

Mrs. Allen is survived by a son, Johnnie Presswood (Estella); grandchildren, Johnnie Presswood, Jr., Shannon Presswood, Lindell Wiggins and Daniel Wiggins; several great grandchildren; a niece, Jimmie Anne Jones; adopted children, Charles Conners and Annette Gaymon; and other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Jeraldine Bryant and a brother, Jimmie Jones.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 6, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. at Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Robert "Robbie" Lawrence Hendrix
1938 - 2012

Robert "Robbie" Lawrence Hendrix, 73, of Hamden, departed this life June 9, 2012.

Born in Moorehaven, FL, November 14, 1938, he was the son of the late Edith Smith.

Prior to retiring, he was employed by the State of Connecticut as a Correctional Officer and was employed by the City of New Haven in the Human Resources Department.

Mr. Hendrix served in the Navy Reserve from 1956-1957.

He is survived by a daughter, Sonja Hendrix; a son, Robert L. Hendrix, Jr.; a cousin, Pamela Trent (Darryl); and other relatives and friends. Burial will be private.

Ernest Lee Dawson
1944 - 2011

Ernest Lee Dawson, 67, of New Haven, departed this life July 12, 2011.

Born in Darlington, SC, June 1, 1944, he was the son of the late Joel and Annette Dawson.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Dawson was employed at Amity Regional High School as a Custodian.

He is survived by a son, Ernest D. Dawson, Jr.; daughters, Melinda and April Dawson; brothers, James, Monroe, Johnnie, Roy and Ricky Dawson; sisters, Mae Frances Bailey, Patricia Dawson and Mildred Mullings; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Mr. Dawson's life and legacy will be held Saturday, July 16, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at Williams Memorial Church, 95 Bishop Williams Ct., Ansonia. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be private.

Travis Washington, Jr.
1994 - 2011

Travis Washington, Jr., 17, of New Haven, departed this life June 25, 2011.

Born in New Haven, CT, March 30, 1994, he was the son of Virginia Williams (Todd) and Travis Washington.

In addition to his parents and stepfather, he is survived by sisters, Tavonne, Teagan and Jac'queline Williams and Alyssa Washington; brothers, Benjamin Washington and Otis Powell; a niece, Brittani Williams; his grandparents, Glenn and Beverly Washington; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held Friday, July 8, 2011, at 2:00 P.M. at Bethel AME Church, 255 Goffe St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 1:00-2:00 P.M. Burial will be private.

Vera Ann McCollum
1944 - 2011

Vera Ann McCollum, 66, of West Haven, departed this life June 28, 2011. She was the wife of Arenza McCollum.

Born in Laurinburg, NC, December 16, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Arletha McIntyre.

Mrs. McCollum was employed at Howard Johnson in the Housekeeping Department. She was a member of Community Baptist Church where she served on the Women's Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Thressa Butler; a son, Jerry Lee McCollum; brothers, Evester and Wendell McIntyre; a sister, Willie Doris McIntyre; grandchildren, Briana and Tamia Butler, Nyreashia McCollum and Tyrece Davis; a great grandchild, Tyquan Eric Davis; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Colon and Lonnie McIntyre; and sisters, Louanna Douglas, Agnora Brown and Careletha McIntyre.

A celebration of Mrs. McCollum's life and legacy will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at Community Baptist Church, 143 Shelton Ave., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Rosie Lee Ampley
1922 - 2011

Rosie Lee Ampley, 89, of New Haven, departed this life July 25, 2011. She was the widow of Willie Ampley, Sr.

Born in Robersonville, NC, January 30, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Roosevelt Hines and Leora Bellamy.

She was employed at Majestic Laundry and was later employed at Arden House Care Center as a Certified Nurse's Aide.

She is survived by her son, Willie L. Ampley (Brenda); a brother, William Stancil (Shirley); seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; fourteen great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Emanuel "Julio" Stancil; and a grandchild.

A celebration of Mrs. Ampley's life and legacy will be held Saturday, July 30, 2011, at 9:00 A.M. at St. Paul UAME Church, 1267 Chapel St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 8:00-9:00 A.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

John Douglas Black
1921 - 2011

John Douglas Black, 90, of New Haven, departed this life September 14, 2011. He was the husband of Enid Mullings Black.

Born in Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica, May 16, 1921, he was the son of the late Hugh S. and Catherine J. Black.

Mr. Black was the proprietor of a package store for numerous years and was also employed at Uniroyal Tires.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Megan Morris; a stepdaughter, Patricia Cables; a brother, Leighton Black; grandchildren, Brian, Marsha and Douglas; step-grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by a stepson, Gordon Cables; a brother, Carlton Black; and a sister, Cynthia Haltaufderhyde.

A celebration of Mr. Black's life and legacy will be held Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 111 Whalley Ave., New Haven. Viewing will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Luke's Episcopal Church General Fund, 111 Whalley Ave., New Haven, CT 06511.

Charles A. Crutchfield Sr.
1938 - 2011

Charles A. Crutchfield Sr., 72, of Hamden, departed this life August 13, 2011. He was the husband of Doris M. Crutchfield.

Born in Boydton, VA, October 23, 1938, he was the son of the late James E. and Hazel M. Crutchfield.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Crutchfield was employed by Infra Metals as a tractor trailer driver. He was an Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Lisa Crutchfield Diggs (David); a son, Charles A. Crutchfield, Jr.; brothers, James Crutchfield and Thomas Crutchfield (Betty); a sister, Edith Simms (Alva); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by a brother, Walter Burton Crutchfield.

A celebration of Mr. Crutchfield's life and legacy will be held Friday, August 19, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church, 425 Newhall St., Hamden. Viewing will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Delta Foundation of Greater New Haven, P.O. Box 8328, New Haven, CT 06530. Donations will benefit programs for youth in the New Haven area.

David A. Durham
1956 - 2011

David A. Durham, 54, of New Haven, departed this life on September 3, 2011.

Born in New Haven, CT on September 26, 1956, he was the son of the late Furman E. Little and Betty L. Durham.

He is survived by a daughter, Shawn Lee; a granddaughter, Destinee Middleton; sisters, Joyce (Jerry) Poole, Anita and Carol Durham, Shirley Townsend, and Dale, Michelle and Robin Little; brothers, Bobby Durham and Furman Little Collins, all of New Haven; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He was predeceased by a brother, Furman E. Little, Jr.

He was a man of many talents, well-known in Newhallville as "Uncle Dave." He was a private caterer and a familiar cook at many St. Elmo's Society and Yale University events. He worked as a bartender for numerous establishments and served as a Park and Recreation Supervisor for more than 30 years.

A celebration of Mr. Durham's life and legacy will be held Friday, September 9, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Matthew's UFWB Church, 400 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Viewing will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Hildred L. Pearson
1950 - 2011

Hildred L. Pearson, 60, of New Haven, departed this life August 10, 2011. She was the widow of Herbert Pearson.

Born in Farmville, NC, October 22, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Clara Marie Simmons and her biologcial father Joe Howard Ward.

Prior to retiring, Mrs. Pearson was employed by the City of New Haven for 37 years as a Field Investigator for the Commission Equal Rights. She was a member of Mt. Gideon Faith Fellowship Church where she served as a Minister.

She leaves to cherish her memory, brothers, Donald Simmons (Darlene) of CT and Jimmie G. Smith (Vivian) and Joe H. Ward, Jr. both of NC, Reginald Davis (Lucille); sisters, Audrey Brunson (Jesse) of CT and Joyce Ward Clarke (Tony) of MD; a godson, Clarence Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Mrs. Pearson's life will be held Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at Mt. Gideon Faith Fellowship Church, 363 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
