Rev. Dr. Emma R. Cables
1918 - 2011
Rev. Dr. Emma R. Cables, 92, of Hamden, departed this life March 17, 2011. She was the widow of Leonard H. Cables.
Born in Mt. Holly, NJ, June 1, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna Mae Roberts.
Rev. Cables was a minister at St. Paul U.A.M.E. Church and was the first U.A.M.E. woman clergyperson ordained in New Haven. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living member of the church and had served as the former assistant pastor.
She is survived by a daughter, Elder Joyce Cables-Newton; a sister, Ethel M. Roberts Long; 6 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Gladys P. Guy; brothers, Percy and Samuel Roberts; and sisters, Edith Murray and Thelma Long.
A celebration of Rev. Cables' life and legacy will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul UAME Church, 1267 Chapel St., New Haven. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Norine Newson
1937 - 2011
Norine Newson, 73, of New Haven, departed this life January 1, 2011.
Born in Bamberg, SC, July 3, 1937, she was the daughter of James and Rever Samuel.
Ms. Newson was employed for numerous years as a Bookkeeper and was a member of New Haven Church of Christ.
She is survived by a son, James Newson (Mildred); a daughter, Iris Newson; a brother, Carl Simmons; sisters, Elouise Williams, Barbara Glover and Elizabeth Mouzon; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lindy Ewing; a brother, James Samuel, Jr.; and sisters, Richardell Briggs and Katherine Garrett.
A celebration of Ms. Newson's life and legacy will be held Saturday, January 8, 2011, at 9:00 AM at Church of Christ, 16 Gem St., New Haven. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
