Meriden - Gertrude L. Sorenson, 91, of 320 Colony St., died Sat., Sept. 6, 2003 at the Bradley Home Infirmary. She was the wife of the late Herbert Sorenson. She was born in Meriden, Jan. 15, 1912 a daughter of the late Gustav and Martha Schwarz Rufleth. She had worked as a part-time bookkeeper at the Interstate Glass Co. for many years. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church where she was a long time member of the Ladies Aid Society and the Christian Fellowship Society. She is survived by a daughter, Edna Sorenson of Newington, two sons and their wives, John and Norma Sorenson of Valparaso, IN and Paul and Joan Sorenson of Milford, CT and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Marilyn Sorenson and two brothers, Carl and Herbert Rufleth.
Funeral service Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003 at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 520 Paddock Ave., Meriden. The Rev. David Brinkley will officiate. Friends may call Tues. one hour prior to the service in church or Monday from 7 - 9 p.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT FLATOW FUNERAL HOME, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 520 Paddock Ave., Meriden, CT 06450 or the the Bradley Home, 320 Colony St., Meriden, CT 06451.

Olive Glowacki LeRoy

Olive G. LeRoy, 83, of Woodbridge, wife for 61 years to the late Stephen J. LeRoy, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at Hilltop Heath Center in Ansonia. She was born Sept. 8, 1920 in Baltimore, MD a daughter of the late William and Rose Glowacki. Olive graduated from Southern Connecticut Teachers College and then went on to receive her master’s degree in Art from Columbia University. She then taught Art in the Woodbridge school system. As an active member of the Garden Club she founded the Woodbridge Community Gardens and the Woodbridge Civic Organization. She is survived by a daughter, Grace LeRoy. She was predeceased by a son, Stephen Frederick LeRoy and a brother, William Glowacki.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 14 at 2 p.m. at the First Church of Christ in Woodbridge with the Rev. Boyd Johnson officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Contributions in Olive's memory may be made to the First Church of Christ, 5 Meetinghouse Lane, Woodbridge, CT 06525. Beecher & Bennett, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Mabel Ford Schenk, 90, of Waitsfield, VT, formerly of Hamden, passed away Sept. 10, 2003, wife of the late George Robert Schenk, Sr. Mrs. Schenk was born in Quebec, Canada, a daughter of the late Willis and Bernice Nichols Ford and resided in Hamden for over 50 years before moving to Vermont in the fall of 2002. She was employed at the Masonic Home and Hospital of Wallingford as a Nursing Supervisor, retiring in 1975 after 20 years. She later volunteered at the Partnerships Center for Adult Day Care in Hamden and was a 50 year member of Ethel Chapter O.E.S. She is survived by a son George Robert Schenk, Jr. and his wife, Mary Schenk of Warren, VT, a daughter, Marilyn S. Beattie, and her husband, Richard Beattie of Orange, CT, 5 grandchildren, Andrea Foley, Heather Zetterberg, Meredith Libby, Hanna Schenk and Willis Schenk, 8 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Dorothy Farrell of Shelburne, VT, Margaret Stone of Richmond, VT and a brother, Albert Ford of East Charleston, VT. She was predeceased by a sister Marion Petell.
Funeral service Monday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. in the Grace & St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 2925 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. Friends may call Sunday from 4-7p.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. An Eastern Star service by Golden Rod Chap. #34, O.E.S. will be at 6:30 p.m. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the Partnerships Center for Adult Day Care, 3 Industrial Circle, Hamden, CT 06517.

Erickson) Cassano of Orange, CT, Vincent (Georgia) Cassano of Tyler, Texas and Michael (Laura) Cassano of Bronx, New York, sister of, Peter, Joseph, James, Dominic and Margaret Laraia and Jeanette LaPaglia and the late Frank Laraia, Nina Cavouti and Mary Laraia. Also survived by 6 grandchildren. Rose was born in Brooklyn, NY, July 20, 1916 a daughter of the late Michael and Carmela Trivigno Laraia. She was a school librarian at Villa Maria Academy in the Bronx. She was a graduate of the College of New Rochelle, School of New Resources, Class of 1986.
Funeral leaving BEECHER & BENNETT TAYLOR FUNERAL HOME, 410 Campbell Ave. at Court St., West Haven at 9:45 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16th. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 70 Gulf St., Milford. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 4 - 8 p.m. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery. John Willoughby Lyon

In New Haven, September 18, 2003, John Willoughby Lyon of 655 Ridge Rd., Hamden, husband of Luciana Mocellin Lyon. Born in Kansas City, MO, Dec. 23, 1916, he was the son of the late Dr. Maclay and Alice Barnby Lyon. John died peacefully and free of pain while being held by his wife and granddaughter, April. John loved living in the New Haven area. He cherished the numerous relationships he had established during those 27 years. John called these years, the happiest of his life. The members of New Haven Rotary Club were an important part of his life. A graduate in Engineering from the University of Missouri, he received a Master's degree from the University of Kansas. After working as the Works Manager for the Whirlpool Corp. for 12 years, John founded and was President of NSC International Corp. in Hot Springs, AR, a manufacturer of Plastic Book Binding machinery. A member of the New Haven Rotary Club, he was also a member of the Quinnipack Club. Besides his wife of 27 years, he is survived by daughters: Susan L. Fox of Kansas City, MO, Marcia Lyon of Des Moines, IA, Nancy Lyon of Little Rock, AR, Lynda L. Sarver of Hot Springs, AR, a stepson and his wife, C. Bruce and Maryland Michael Gambardella of Rockland County, NY and 7 grandchildren.

Weber, mother of Suzanne Duffy and her husband, Patrick R. Duffy M.D. of Cheshire, grandmother of Patrick III, Kristin, Meghan, Shannon and Kaitlin Duffy all of Cheshire. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Frank and William McManus and a sister, Dorothy Pontillo. Eleanor was born in New Haven, July 20, 1916, a daughter of the late William and Loretta McGuinness McManus. A graduate of Hillhouse High School and Larson Junior College. She was employed at the New Haven branch of the Canadian National Railroad. She was a former member of the High Lane Club of North Haven and the New Haven Women's Club.
Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden at 9:15 a.m. Sat., Sept. 27. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Bridget Church, Cheshire at 10 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 - 8 p.m. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery. MERIDEN - Lillian J. Brown, 84, formerly of 127 Veteran St., died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at Meriden Nursing and Rehabilitaion Center. She was the wife of the late Norman Brown. Born in Meriden on August 3, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Axel T. and Esther E. Erlandson Johnson. Until her retirement, she had worked at the Sherri Manufacturing Company in Berlin. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Meriden Senior Center and the Salvation Army. She is survived by a sister, Ruth J. Olson of Meriden and eight nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Norman C. Brown; two sisters, Elizabeth Dellinger and Margaret Durin; and a brother, Carl Johnson.
The funeral will be held Monday, July 7, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Perry L. Beaver will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. If desired, contributions in Lillian's memory may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 164 Hanover St., Meriden, CT 06451.

Sung-Un Chang

Mr. Sung-Un Chang, a longtime resident of North Haven, passed away Monday, September 15, 2003 at South County Hospital in Wakefield, Rhode Island. He was born to Nak-do and Kuan-myong Chang on February 19, 1918. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Do-shi-sha University in Kyoto, Japan, he attended the University of Michigan, and then attended and received his M.A. in English literature from Yale University. He married Pauline Wuai Kimm in 1952. Mr. Chang was a lecturer at the Institute for East Asian Studies at Yale University, and co-authored, with S. L. Martin and Y.H.Lee, "A Korean English Dictionary". He also wrote the successful "Gateway to English" series of textbooks and "A Dictionary of English Usage" for Korean students. His other publications include the books, "Korean Newspaper Readings" and "Readings in Contemporary Korean". He is survived by his brother and sister, Choo-Un Chang of Chevy Chase, Maryland and Young-Sook Lee of Seoul, Korea. He has a daughter Suknan Sylvia Chang of Oakland, California, a son Keunsuk Paul Chang and two granddaughters, Sophie and Pauline, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden.
