MERIDEN - Paula K. Burke, 32, of 581 Crown Village, Meriden, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003 at home, after a long fight with leukemia. She passed quietly, surrounded by her family. Ms. Burke was born in Meriden on Oct. 17, 1971, the daughter of Charles and Charlotte Burke and was a lifelong residen of Meriden. Besides her parents, she leaves two sons, Daniel Hanscom and Jacob Hanscom of Bristol; one daughter, Makayla Taylor of Meriden; a sister and brother-in-law, Pamela and Derick Rodriquez of Winsted; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Jeffrey and Rebecca Burk of Waterbury, Chuck and Amy Burke of Southington and Barry Burke and Ann Dow of Meriden; two special aunts, Lois Caldwell of Bangor, ME and Deanna Boland of Cyprus, TX and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Friday, Nov. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. If desired, contributions in Paula's memory may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 300 Research Parkway, Suite 310, Meriden, CT 06450, or to MidState VNA & Hospice, 658 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450.

In Southington, Nov. 23, 2003, Iris DeLisle Wyllie of 4463 Whitney Ave. Hamden, wife of the late David Wyllie - former Superintendent of Schools in Hamden, mother of Gail Wyllie Zeen of Durham and David Wyllie of Hamden. She was born in Waterville, ME, Sept. 10, 1910, a daughter of the late Joseph U. and Anna Maye Clark DeLisle. Mrs. Wyllie was a member of the Church of Redeemer and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She had attended the Thomas Business College in Waterville, ME. She was predeceased by a brother, Donald J. DeLisle and three sisters; Thelma Halworth, Adrienne DeLisle and Bettina Piecuch.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of the Redeemer, Whitney Ave. at Cold Spring St., New Haven, Monday, Dec. 1, at 11 A.M. Arrangements with BEECEHR & BENNETT, 2300 WHITNEY AVE., HAMDEN. Contributions may be made in her memory to the David Wyllie Memorial Scholarship Fund, 4463 Whitney Ave., Hamden, CT 06518.

James B. Kennealy, Sr., 60, of 169 School St., Hamden, passed away Mon., Nov. 24, 2003 in CT Hospice in Branford, father of Theresa Kennealy of West Haven and the late James B. Kennealy, Jr., brother of William Kennealy of East Haven, grandfather of Diana Strain of New Haven and Daniel Langston of West Haven, uncle of John, William, Joseph Kennealy and Maria Jette. Mr. Kennealy was a librarian at the Yale Law School Library for 34 years prior to his retirement and a resident of Hamden since 1990.
Funeral service Friday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. Friends may call prior to the service from 11 a.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the James B. Kennealy, Sr. burial fund through the funeral home.

In Hamden, Nov. 9, 2003, Kenneth "Corky" O’Connell, 68, husband of Catherine Colwell O'Connell, of 209 Haverford St., brother of Robert O'Connell of Clinton also survived by several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and great nephews. Born in New Haven, Jan. 4, 1935 a son on the late Joseph O’Connell. Corky worked as a custodian for the City of New Haven, Yale Univ. and The New Haven Railroad. He was an Army Veteran.
Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Wed., Nov. 12, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 10:00 a.m. Friends may call Tuesday (TODAY) from 4-7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Hamden - Holly Ann Thomas Sequino cherished wife and best friend of John Sequino of Denslow Hill Rd., passed away Monday Nov. 10, 2003 at her home. She was born in New Haven, Dec. 5, 1961 a daughter of Roger B. and Judith Capper Thomas of Hamden and was a life long Hamden resident. Holly graduated from the University of Vermont and was a dental hygienist for many years with Dr. Alan Weiss of Hamden. An avid German shepherd Dog lover, she was the Founder and President of K-9 Power Products. She also has served as Secretary and Treasurer for the New England Region of the United Schutzhund Clubs of America for the past ten years. She is also survived by a sister, Kim Thomas of Hamden, a brother, Roger B. Thomas, Jr. of Hamden, a brother-in-law, Michael Kiwanis and his wife Cindy of Bethany, nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Funeral service will be Wed., Nov. 12, 2003 at 11 a.m. in the Dunbar United Church, 767 Benham St., Hamden. Friends may call at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Tuesday (TODAY) from 4-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to the CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd. Branford. CT 06405.

Thomas W. Ellis, Jr., 60, husband of Vivian Watts Ellis of Parkside Dr. New Haven passed away Nov. 6, 2003 at home surrounded by his family. Mr. Ellis was born in New Haven, June 30, 1943 a son of Catherine W. Ellis and the late Thomas W. Ellis, Sr. and was employed by Metro North Railroad. He is also survived by his children; Chantel Ellis, Monique Taylor, Quanette Rhodes, Angela Alexander, and Phillip Kirby, a sister Sharon Blue, a brother Richard Ellis, 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

MERIDEN - Teresa Lopez, 68, of 91 Hicks St., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 10, 2003 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Domingo Lopez, Sr., and passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. Born in Aguada, Puerto Rico on Oct. 11, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Jorge and Jacoba Carrero Santoni. She had resided in Meriden since 1961 and was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana Church. Besides her husband, she leaves behind her children: Teri Ramos and her husband, Inocensio of Meriden, Dalia Maldonado and her husband, Ralph of Bridgeport, Daisy Lopez and her husband, Luis of Meriden, Diana Lopez of Hartford, Domingo Lopez, Jr. and his wife, Angie of Meriden, and Wilbert Lopez and his wife, Lucy of New Britain; eleven grandchildren, all special to her, Censio, Loren, Victoria, Lisa, Stephanie, Stephen, Luis, David, Angelique, Erika and Emma. She is also survived by five sisters and three brothers and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, at the First Baptist Church, 460 Broad St., Meriden. The Rev. Hector Sandoval will officiate. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.

In CT Hospice, Branford, Nov. 27, 2003, Valentine Silocka Burkenpas, 80, of 15 Springside Ave., New Haven, wife of the late George Burkenpas, mother of June Gorsky and her husband, Bruce of Olympia, WA, sister of Michael Silocka and Jerry Hurl both of New Haven. She was predeceased by two brothers, Alex and Walter Silocka and a sister, Mary Crocco. Born in Seymour, CT, Aug. 29, 1923 a daughter of the late Michael and Anastasia Silocka. Valentine graduated from Commercial High School. Prior to her retirement she worked for the New Haven Telephone Co. and as a sorority mother at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.
Relatives and friends may call at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Mon., Dec. 1 from 10-10:30 a.m. Graveside service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Frank M. Castiglione, Sr., M.D.

Dr. Frank M. Castiglione, Sr. age 88, husband of Pamela Schwab Castiglione, of 525 Ridge Rd., Hamden, died peacefully at his home after a long illness on November 28 while surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Giuseppe and Francesca DeCarlo Castiglione of New Haven. He was born on March 14, 1915 and was predeceased by his sister Mary and brothers Charles and Professor Salvatore Castiglione. Dr. Castiglione was a member of the class of 1932 at Hillhouse High School and attended Yale College on a full scholarship, where he graduated as a Sterling Scholar in 1936. Subsequently, he graduated from New York Medical College and interned at Saint Raphael's Hospital before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he was a physician and surgeon. He served in the Pacific theater, where he attained the rank of Major. Dr. Castiglione began his career in general practice until becoming a board certified dermatologist in 1953. He maintained a private practice in New Haven and Hamden when in 1983 he was joined by his son, Frank Jr., and practiced until his retirement in 2000. His practice was distinguished by his caring and personal approach to his patients. He was a clinical professor of Dermatology at the Yale Medical School, and was a past president of the Connecticut State Dermatology Society, New Haven Medical Association and the Amity Club. He was a member of the New Haven Country Club and an avid and hopeful Boston Red Sox fan. Dr. Castiglione is survived by his eight children and their families, Joseph and Janice Castiglione of Marshfield, MA and their children, Joseph Jr., Dr. Thomas and Mary Katherine; Carolyn and Tom Peterson and their son Tyler; Cheryl Castiglione and her daughters, Pamela and Emily; Dr. Frank and Janis Castiglione and their children, Frank III, Andrew, and Faith; Pamela and Dr. Sam Potolicchio of Bethesda, Maryland and their children, Sam, Blake, Michael, Caroline and Matthew; Dr. Charles and Linda Castiglione of West Hartford and their sons, Jeffrey, Erik and Michael; Emily and Lawrence Coassin and their daughter, Polly and son, Lawrence, Jr.; Hope and Tom Gower of Hampden, ME and their daughters, Victoria, Emily and Olivia. He is also survived by his in-laws Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schwab and Mrs. Robert Schwab, daughters-in-laws, Kiki and Rachael, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services are private. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Connecticut Hospice, Inc., 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405 or St. Raphael's Foundation, 1450 Chapel St. New Haven, CT 06511 or the Yale Dept. of Dermatology, P.O. Phyllis Riddle Silverstein

In Hartford, November 28, 2003, Phyllis Riddle Silverstein of Avery Heights, Hartford, formerly of North Haven, wife of the late Leo (Bud) Silverstein, Jr. died peacefully, surrounded by her children, after a brief illness. This kind and beautiful woman leaves behind a devoted family of children, grandchildren and friends.
She was born Phyllis Joan Riddle, March 11, 1923, in Valparaiso, Indiana, the daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth Budd Riddle. She grew up in South Bend, Indiana, attended Indiana University, and left to join the homefront war effort. She married Bud Silverstein of New York City on December 20, 1944. After Bud’s service in the Navy, the couple moved to Connecticut. The family, which came to include four children, resided in North Haven, Middletown, and Glastonbury before settling again in North Haven in 1957. Phyllis devoted her life to the raising of the children and her home was a magnet for their friends. She also worked as a part-time secretary at the Church of the Redeemer in New Haven and enjoyed numerous volunteer and outdoor activities.
Following Bud’s death in 1976, Phyllis worked briefly as a travel agent and then began a 10-year career as managing secretary to the Friends of the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale. She also enjoyed a long relationship with Dr. Alex Herbordt of Woodbridge, with whom she shared a love of travel and music, especially opera. In March of 2000, she sold her home in North Haven and moved to Avery Heights, Hartford, where she made many new and devoted friends and renewed her love of bridge and other activities.
She leaves a loving legacy through her four children, Susan Tanguay of Durham, NH; Sally Taylor of Hartford, CT; Jill Silverstein of Philadelphia, PA; and James Moisson of Groton, MA; her daughter-in-law Maureen Moisson and sons-in-law William Tanguay and Allan Taylor; her seven grandchildren, Sarah, David, and Kate Tanguay; Rachel and Karen Taylor; and Lucas and Jeremy Moisson; and her mother-in-law, Edith Silverstein of Deerfield Beach, FL. Phyllis was predeceased by her first child Jane, her brothers James and David Riddle, and her friend Alex Herbordt.
A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Congregational Church, corner of Farmington Avenue and Woodland Streets in Hartford (opposite the Mark Twain House) on Saturday, December 6, at 10:30 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nature Conservancy, CT Chapter, 55 High Street, Middletown CT 06457; or the Avery Heights Auxiliary, 705 New Britain Avenue, Hartford, CT 06106.
Arrangements are in care of Beecher & Bennett, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden CT.

In New Haven, Nov. 3, 2003, Anna Longo DiNello of Iron Works Rd., Clinton formerly of West Haven, wife of the late Pasquale P. DiNello, mother of Patricia Marshall of Branford, Michael DiNello of Port St. Lucie, FL, Diane Zadrozny and Richard DiNello both of Clinton, sister of Madeline Gallipoli of West Haven and the late Mary Ruwet. Also survived by four grandchildren. Anna was born in New Haven, April 15, 1926 a daughter of the late Michael and Mary Russo Longo. She had worked as an assembler at Cheesebrough - Pond's of Clinton for 23 years and retired in 1988. She had been a resident of West Haven until moving to Clinton in 1965.
