1932 - 2009

Oscar Smith, 76, of New Haven, departed this life January 5, 2009. He was the husband of Mary Mims Smith.

Born in Barnesville, GA, September 23, 1932, he was the son of the late Lillie Mae Ross Smith and Hatchel Wyche.

He was employed for numerous years as a Construction Worker.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Oscar Smith, Jr., Theodore Smith (Evelyn), Michael Smith (Ruby), and Duncan Smith (Granata); a stepson, Willie J. Mims; sisters, Ida Mae Gotell and Lillie Ruth Barkley; a brother, James Smith; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by sons, Felix B. and John Henry Smith; a sister; and a brother.

A celebration of Mr. Smith's life and legacy will be held Monday, January 12, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Chapel Church, 220 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Carolyn Louise McNeill
1947 - 2008

Carolyn Louise McNeill, 61, of West Haven, departed this life September 2, 2008.

Born in Raleigh, NC, February 9, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Claude McNeill and Lessie McNeill-White.

She was a resident of Bridgeport for numerous years.

Ms. McNeill was employed as a Phlebotomist at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Bridgeport Hospital and Medical Associates in Fairfield. She served in the Army Reserves for 20 years and was a member of Living Word Ministries in West Haven.

Ms. McNeill leaves to cherish her memories, a loving daughter, April Green-Jones; a loving son, Franklyn Tyrone Green; a loving brother, Larry McNeill (Pam); grandchildren, Dorian, Yari, and Deja; nieces, Ashley and Kelly; an aunt, Johnnie Scott; an uncle, Clayton McLean; cousins, Louise Hite and Lena McNeill (Victor); goddaughters, Adenike Davidson and Zenzile Davidson-Hibbler (Kwesi); a longtime best friend, Brenda McNeill-Davidson (Clive); and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Ms. McNeill’s life and legacy will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Living Word Ministries, 225 Meloy Rd., West Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport.

Netha Manning
1914 - 2008

Netha Manning, 94, of Brockton, MA, formerly of North Haven, CT, departed this life December 26, 2008. She was the widow of Hollis Manning.

Born in Hartsville, SC, August 27, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Almeta Williams.

She is survived by nieces, Brenda Manning and Patricia Strickland and a cousin, Earnestine Mumford. A celebration of Mrs. Manning's life will be held Friday, January 2, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Varick AME Zion Church, 246 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Edna L. "Sally" Carolina Greene
1938 - 2009

Edna L. "Sally" Carolina Greene, 70, of New Haven, departed this life April 6, 2009. She was the widow of Therodges "Doc" Greene, Sr.

Edna was born on September 1, 1938 in Darlington, SC, daughter of the late Leo and Marie Thomas Carolina.

She was employed for several years as a Daycare Provider (Teacher's Assistant) for the New Haven Child Development Program.

Edna was a charter member of First Church of God, 90 Harper Ave., New Haven. She served for many years as a member of the WCG Auxiliary and was a faithful member and, for a short period of time, the director of the Senior Choir.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Pearson (Raymond) of New Haven and Janet Greene of New Haven; sons, Therodges Greene, Jr. (Karen) of Hamden and Gregory Greene, Sr. (Christie) of New Haven; sisters, Cleo Rush (Hezekiah), Mary A. Samuel and Eloise Thomas McCall all of Darlington, SC, Kathleen Cannon (Jerry) of Florence, SC and Rosa Head (James) of New Haven; brothers, Chester Carolina of New Haven and Harry Lee Carolina of Darlington, SC; a sister in-law, Elder Annie Greene Burgess of Hamden; a brother in-law, James Greene, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Darlington, SC; eleven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Mrs. Greene's life and legacy will be held Saturday, April 11, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. at First Church of God, 90 Harper Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 8:00-9:00 a.m. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Thelma L. Powell Grandy
1924 - 2006

Thelma L. Powell Grandy, 81, of New Haven, departed this life October 29, 2006. She was the widow of George B. Grandy.

Born in Kinston, NC, on November 11, 1924, she was the daughter of the late James and Daisy Gooding Powell.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed for 35 years as a nurse's aide at Carewell Rest Home in New Haven.

Mrs. Grandy is survived by a son, George Grandy (Loretta); daughters, NHPD Detective Hilda Kilpatrick (William), Johnnie Grandy Stewart (Nathaniel) and Elwanda Grandy Grate; 4 sisters; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister in-law, Jessie Powell; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Bishop Jonathan Powell; a sister, Irene Powell and a son in-law, Arthur Grate.

A funeral service celebrating Mrs. Grandy's life and legacy will be held Thursday, November 2, 2006, at 10 AM at English Chapel UFWB Church, 285 Wilmot Rd., Bridgeport. Friends may call at the church from 9-10 AM and on Wednesday from 6-8 PM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Garfield Coleman, Jr.
1932 - 2011

Garfield Coleman, Jr., 78, of New Haven, departed this life March 18, 2011. He was the husband of Rose L. Coleman.

Born in Tuckahoe, NY, August 28, 1932, he was the son of the late Garfield Coleman, Sr. and Marion Coleman.

Prior to retiring, he was employed at G&O Manufacturing as an Inspector.

Mr. Coleman was a member of St. Martin de Porres Church. He was an Army veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Ronald Coleman (Alice McNeil); daughters, Theresa Coleman-Davis (Henry L. Jr.) and Geraldine Coleman-Dotson; a sister, Ellwood Jean Coleman; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Coleman and a sister, Rosemary Ellis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, March 24, 2011, at 10:00 AM at St. Martin de Porres Church, 136 Dixwell Ave. (corner of Webster St. and Dixwell Ave.) New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00-10:00 AM. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Thelma Laverne Solomon
1939 - 2011

Thelma Laverne Solomon, affectionately known as Verne, 71, of Hamden, departed this life peacefully in her home on January 5, 2011. She was the beloved wife of Allen K. Solomon for forty years.

Born in Brookneal, VA, May 5, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Robert J. and Thelma Britton.

Mrs. Solomon was employed by the City of New Haven Board of Education at Richard C. Lee and Hill Regional Career High Schools for over forty years. There she served as a Guidance Counselor, Assistant Principal, and most recently, a Guidance Consultant.

She was a dedicated member of Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church and was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc. and a former member of Jack & Jill of America, Inc.

In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Sharnita Solomon and Sharron Solomon-McCarthy (Jesse); step-son Emeth Solomon; grandchildren, Tyler and Hunter McCarthy, Jahmal, Javon, and Jaylin Solomon; nieces, Michelle and Tonia Petty; nephews, Eric and Lamont Petty and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by a brother, Lawrence Britton and sisters, Pauline Petty and Sherwyn Britton.

A celebration of Mrs. Solomon's life and legacy will be held Monday, January 10, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1324 Chapel St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00-11:00 AM. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Ceremony will begin at 10:30 AM. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to Hill Regional Career High School in honor of the Thelma Laverne Solomon Scholarship Fund, 140 Legion Avenue, New Haven, CT 06519.

Delois Ann Wells
1940 - 2011

Delois Ann Wells, 70, of Hamden, departed this life March 28, 2011. She was the widow of Melvin Wells, Sr.

Born in Thurman, WV, September 23, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Annie Mosley.

Mrs. Wells was a member of Community Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sons, Melvin Wells, Jr. (Lisa) and Tyler Wells; brothers, John, Frank, Charles and Joseph Mosley; a sister, Betty Woods; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Wells Pascascio; and sisters, Nancy Maxwell, Jean Booker and Evelyn Riley.

A celebration of Mrs. Wells' life and legacy will be held Friday, April 1, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Community Baptist Church, 143 Shelton Ave., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be private.

Mabel Robinson
1935 - 2011

Mabel Robinson, 75, of West Haven, departed this life January 7, 2011.

Born in Camden, SC, April 2, 1935, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Louise Murphy.

Prior to retiring, she was employed at the West Haven V.A. Medical Center in the Housekeeping Dept.

Ms. Robinson was a member of Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sisters, Sally Higgins and Mary Fairfax; her grandaughters, Andrea Monic Johnson, Tracy Rena Reaves and Tywanna Rochelle Reaves, grandson James Murphy Jr., daughter in-law, Lorine Barker-Murphy; thirteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, James "Rock" Murphy; and brothers, John Henry, Jr. and David and George Kurtis Murphy.

A celebration of Ms. Robinson's life and legacy will be held Friday, January 14, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 100 Webster St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
