Dinea Minter Lacy
1917 - 2007

Dinea Minter Lacy, 89, of New Haven, entered into eternal rest peacefully at the Jewish Home for the Aged in New Haven, on Friday, February 2, 2007. She was the widow of Charles F. Lacy.

Born on August 25, 1917 in Selma, AL, she was the daughter of the late Felix and Ethel Stallworth Minter.

Upon relocating to New Haven, she became a member of Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. E.R. Davis. She served as a member of Choir #2.

Mrs. Lacy was a proud mother who was truly loving and devoted to her seven children and family.

She is survived by four sons, Birl Jackson (Loretta) of New Haven, Charles Frank Lacy, Jr. (Barbara) of Waterbury and Arthur James Lacy (Isabelle) and William George Lacy, both of Hamden; three daughters, Mary Harris (Donnie), Fannie Mae Caddell and Eleanor Reynolds Hine (Craig), all of New Haven; a loving and devoted sister, Ethel Coleman of Roxbury, MA; long-time companion Lewis Jones of New Haven; a goddaughter, Jesse Spencer of New Haven; 27 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Lacy was predeceased by sisters, Ella Hardy and Freedonia Watkins; a brother, Jack Minter; a daughter, Gloria Jean Lacy and a grandson, Charles Lacy.

Funeral services to celebrate Mrs. Lacy's life and legacy will be held Thursday, February 8, 2007, at 11 am at Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 100 Webster St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 am. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Catherine Sutton Dawson
1947 - 2009

Catherine Sutton Dawson, daughter of the late Mollie and Charlie Jones was born in LaGrange, North Carolina on December 31, 1947.

She departed this world on Wednesday June 3, 2009 peacefully in her home.

Cathey, as she was known to family and friends, believed that each of us has a responsibility to play an active role in our community.

Catherine Sutton Dawson began employment at Yale New-Haven Hospital (YNHH) on November 4, 1974. She worked in various roles including food service worker, clinic aide, nurses’ aide and finally as outreach worker in the Maternal Child Initiative in the Department of Community Health. She became a Quarter Century Club member in 2000, and her tenure spanned nearly 35 years of employment. She worked as an outreach educator in the “Me and my Baby” program of the Primary Care Center from 1981 until her passing. In 2007, Catherine was among the first to be honored in the “I am YNHH” Campaign highlighting model employees.

Catherine was an active citizen in the New Haven community and supported causes that made a positive contribution to our society.

She was a member of St. Matthew’s UFWB Church.

Catherine had an infectious spirit of enthusiasm. While working hard for YNHH, Catherine met and eventually married her husband of 21 years, Anthony B. Dawson.

In addition to her loving husband, Catherine leaves a devoted daughter, Toni Alexis Dawson; two beautiful grandsons, Frank Jr. and Amir Daniley and their father, Frank Daniley, Sr., all of New Haven. Catherine is also survived by her sister, Mildred (Milton) Cannon of New Haven, CT and a brother, J.P. (Nina) Jones of La Grange, NC.

She was predeceased by one sister; Mary Jones and three brothers; Charlie Jr., Linwood, and Roger Jones.

A celebration of Catherine’s life and legacy will be held Monday, June 8, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Matthew’s UFWB Church, 400 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Friends may call at the church Sunday from 5:00-6:30 P.M. with a service of tribute and celebration to be held from 6:30-8:00 P.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “Me and My Baby” Program at the Primary Care Center of the Yale New Haven Hospital, 20 York St., New Haven 06510.

Patricia Ann Austin
1961 - 2007

Patricia Ann Austin, 45, of Hamden, departed this life April 18, 2007.

Born in Charleston, SC, August 11, 1961, she was the daughter of Creola Brown and the late John H. Evans.

Mrs. Austin was employed by Harborside Arden House and the Guilford House as a certified nurse's assistant. She also served in the US Army Reserve.

In addition to her mother she leaves to cherish her memories, sons, Brian, Joshua, Dominique and Anthony Austin, Jr.; her husband, Anthony Austin, Sr.; a sister, Brenda Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her adoptive mother, Louise Singleton and her grandmother, Daisy Evans.

A celebration of Patricia's life and legacy will be held Friday, April 27, 2007, at 11:00 am at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call from 10:00-11:00 am. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Virginia M. Gulley
1939 - 2005

Virginia M. Gulley, 66, of Dixwell Ave., New Haven, departed this life on July 13, 2005.

Ms. Gulley was born in Williamsburg County, SC, on March 12, 1939, daughter of Queenie Mabry Montgomery Hawley and the late Lucious Montgomery.

She was a member of St. Paul UAME Church. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Yale University.

She is survived by sons, Philip (Stephanie), Ernest, Michael and Rodney Gulley; a daughter, Willa Cunningham; a special friend, Wilbert S. Gibson; a sister, Barbara (Willie) Nelson; an aunt, Celia Shaw; an uncle, Leroy Montgomery; a special cousin, Betty Stewart; six grandchildren; a great granddaughter; her former husband, J.C. Gulley; a stepson; a stepbrother; two stepsisters; and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a sister, Evelena Burke.

Funeral service will be held Friday, July 22, 2005, at 7pm at St. Paul UAME Church, 150 Dwight St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 6pm-7pm. Burial Saturday at 9:30am in Evergreen Cemetery.

Otis Barger
1941 - 2005

Otis Barger, 64, of New Haven, died on September 30, 2005.

Mr. Barger was born in New London, NC, on September 3, 1941, son of the late Fletcher and Catherine Edwards Barger.

He was employed by Stop & Shop Companies.

Mr. Barger is survived by a daughter, Melinda Barger; a son, Anthony Barger; a brother, Marshall Owens; a grandchild; and other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a son, Christopher Barger and a sister, Doris McElhaney.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, October 6, 2005, at 1pm at Church of Christ, 16 Gem St., New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 12pm-1pm. Burial in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Mildred G. Jones
1923 - 2010

Mildred G. Jones, 87, of West Haven, departed this life September 28, 2010. She was the widow of William D. Jones, Sr.

Born in St. Petersburg, FL, February 17, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Hattie Devine.

Prior to retiring, she was employed at Yale-New Haven Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide.

Mrs. Jones is survived by daughters, Faye and Phyllis Jones; a son, William D. Jones, Jr.; a sister, Eloise Dennis; two grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Mrs. Jones’ life and legacy will be held Monday, October 4, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Benjamin Jackson
1966 - 2010

Benjamin Jackson, 44, of West Haven, departed this life September 28, 2010.

Born in Jamaica, May 3, 1966, he was the son of Aston and Hermena Jackson.

Mr. Jackson was a self-employed Carpenter.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Ian Jackson; brothers, Denton Golding and Michael and Desmond Jackson; sisters, Pauline Jackson-McHayle, Una, Joycelyn, Karen and Lavene Jackson and Elaine Bernard; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Mr. Jackson's life and legacy will be held Friday, October 8, 2010, at 10:30 AM at Mt. Zion Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 64 Marlboro St., Hamden. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:30-10:30 AM. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

Elkanah W. Pitter
1922 - 2010

Elkanah W. Pitter, 88, of New Haven, formerly of West Haven, departed this life October 18, 2010.

Born in Jamaica, West Indies, May 18, 1922, he was the son of the late James and Maudriana Pitter.

Mr. Pitter was employed for numerous years at Yale-New Haven Hospital as a Patient Transporter.

He is survived by a brother, Francis of Jamaica; nieces, Eugennie and Beatrice Pitter; nephews, Stanley Pitter (Gloria), Ivan Griffiths (Elaine); and Apton Folkes (Gloria); a host of great nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

A celebration of Mr. Pitter's life will be held Saturday, October 30, 2010, at 10:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Burial will be private.

Renard “Big Boy” Harris
1966 - 2010

Renard “Big Boy” Harris, 44, of Richmond VA, departed this life on September 18, 2010.

He was born in New Haven, CT on February 7, 1966 to Mary Harris and the late Robert Harris Sr.

He graduated from James Hillhouse HS in 1984. Later he worked at St. Raphael’s Hospital until he opened his own restaurant, Mama Mary’s Soulfood” in the late 80’s in New Haven, CT. Renard moved to Richmond, VA in 1995 and opened “Sandra’s Soul Food II”. He was a hard-worker and had a passion for cooking and helping others without expecting anything in return. During President Obama’s presidential campaign, he came up with the idea to promote “Obama burgers” in honor of the first black president.

“Nard” will be deeply mourned and sadly be missed by his wife, Delta Harris and his children: Renard Jr., Shanare’, Darnell, Lexus and Darcy Harris and Wafeeq (Desmond) Amin, all of Richmond, VA and Renada Amin of New Haven, CT; a grandson, Jashaun Amin. Renard was also survived by brothers, Kelvin Harris, Robert Harris, Jr. and Robert Stallings; sisters, Barbara Saunders, Sabrina Autry, Sandra Pittman and Sherena Harris; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Dinea Lacy.

A celebration of Renard's life and legacy will be held Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Temple Church, 285 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
