Lillian V. Monk Age 82, passed away November 20, 2001 at the Wilmington Hospital.
Ms. Monk worked for the Berkowitz and the Samuels families until she became ill. Lillian was a lifelong mem-ber of the Mother AUFCMP Church. She served on the Steward board, was a member of Willing Workers, the Elders ministry, the Social Dramatic Club, the Ushers Union and the VFW Auxiliary.
Her sons and daughters-in-law, Donald W. and Archibele Monk of Newburn, NC, John H. and Olivia Washington of Wilmington, DE; and daughter, Marie V. Robinson of Wilmington, DE survive. Her 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a devoted friend, Jane Gibbs and family.
There will be a viewing 4-6 pm Monday, November 26 at the Mother AUFCMP Church, 9th & Franklin Sts., Wilmington, with auxiliary services at 6:15 and a Homegoing service at 7. Interment will be in the Silverbrook cemetery.

Harry Ray Messick, Jr., Harry Ray Messick, Jr., age 66 of Newark, DE, died on Thursday, November 22, 2001, with his wife at his bedside at Union Hospital, Elkton, MD.
Mr. Messick had been the proprietor of the Maple Square Mobile Home Community in Newark, since 1983. A US Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a Life Member of J. Allison O'Daniel Post #475, VFW, where he served with the Honor Guard and on the Home Committee. He was a member of Elkton Moose Lodge #851, and he loved sports and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Reyburn Messick; 2 children, Russell R. Messick of Newark and Terrie Hilderbrand of Newark; mother, Edna Foraker Messick of Newark; 6 grandchildren, Sherrie A. Frederick, Desirae N. Campbell, Steven L. Campbell, Russell "Rocky" Messick, Blaine M. Varrell and Brian "Cody" Hilderbrand; and a great grandson, Kristofer Frederick.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, November 26, 2001 at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where friends may call after 10 am.
Interment will be private.

William Garvine Mr. William Garvine, age 81 of New Castle, DE, died on Thursday, November 22, 2001 at his home.
Mr. Garvine was a US Navy veteran of World War II and served on the USS Arkansas. He retired after 30 years of service from the Continental Can Company.
He also had 20 years of service with the Wiley Cork Company.
He devoted his life to his family. He enjoyed supporting his grandchildren in various sporting activities and was their "#1 Fan." Mr. Garvine is survived by his wife of 51 years, Emma Frances Hulse Garvine; children, Doris J. Donahue (Richard) of Millsboro, DE, Marion E. Krone (Richard) of New Castle, DE, Eleanor H. Loveland (Donald) of Delaware City, DE, Donna D. Miller (Michael) of New Castle, DE, Robert Garvine of Townsend, DE, Jack Garvine of Newark, DE and Alice Rule of Middletown, DE; grandchildren, Valarie, John, Richie Jr., Billy, Sheri, Jacki, Michael, and Britney; great grandchildren, Jimmy, Sean, and Haley; a great-great grandchild, Ryleigh; brother, Clarence Garvine of Wilmington; and sister, Emma Booth of Wilmington.

Joseph A. Marsilii Age 67 of Wilmington and North Bethany, DE, died Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE after a short illness.
Joe was born in Wilmington April 8, 1934 to the late Tobia and Mary Marsilii. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He retired from Ford Motor Company after 31 years of service. He was a member of VFW Post #7234 and American Legion Post #5.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Regina "Pappa" Marsilii; 1 sister, Mary Ann Isaac of Easton, PA; 2 sons, Joseph A. Jr. of Falls Church, VA and Paul of Middletown, DE; and 3 daughters, Jeanmarie Beiriger of Chester Springs, PA, Eileen Marsilii and Diana Rizzo, both of Wilmington. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Rebecca and Kathryn Marsilii, Anthony Jesson, Christa and Jenna Beiriger, Melissa Woodard and Megan, Christina, Caitlin and Mary Elena Marsilii.
Friends may call from 7-9 pm Monday, November 26 at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 am Tuesday, November 27 at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Rd., Wilmington. Thomas Earl Sargent Age 82 of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Robscott Manor, Newark, DE, died Friday, November 23, 2001 of heart failure at home. He was the beloved husband of Wilna H. Sargent, who preceded him in death February 24, 2001.
Mr. Sargent was born in Calhoun County, MS October 7, 1919. He trusted Christ as his personal savior August 1, 1948 at the First Baptist Church in Phoenix, AZ. He served in the US Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1966 as a chief petty officer who proudly served his country. He then worked 12 years at the University of Delaware in the Conferences Department. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by 2 sisters, Agnes Harpole and Gene Pumphrey, both of MS; his son and daughter-in-law, John T. and Elizabeth M. Sargent of Virginia Beach, VA; his daughters and son-in-law, Eva J. and Stewart C. Sauer of Wilmington and Margaret S. Flynn of Wilmington. Also surviving is his former son-in-law, John J. Flynn, III of Newark; 9 grandchildren, John J., Monika, Thomas E. and Ryan Flynn, Robert J. and Christopher T. Strain, Amy E., David T. and Laurel J. Sargent; and 2 great grandchildren, Michelle and Joey Flynn.

Harry F. Bargelski, Sr. Age 62 of New Castle, DE, died Friday, November 23, 2001 at the Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE from complications of mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11 am Wednesday, November 28 at the St. Dennis Catholic Church, Rt.213, Galena, MD, with interment in the adjoining cemetery.
Friends may call 6-8 pm Tuesday, November 27 at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, Limestone & Milltown Rds., Wilmington.
There will be no viewing Wednesday morning.
Howard F. Hillis Age 57 of Wilmington, DE, died suddenly of a heart attack on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 in Philadelphia, PA.
He was at the First Union Center to attend a Philadelphia 76'rs game.
Born in Wilmington September 29, 1944, he was a graduate of Salesianum School and LaSalle University.
He enlisted in the United States Army, graduated from Officer Candidate School and served in Okinawa during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame Law School and a member of the Delaware Bar, he was a trial lawyer.
He practiced law with the Office of the Public Defender, the State Department of Justice and as a sole practitioner. He was a life member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He was regarded by his peers as an outstanding trial advocate.
He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Virginia and his beloved daughter, Stacee.
He is survived by his sisters and brother, Mary Ann Hillis, Edmund Hillis, and Johanna Lee Hillis with whom he resided.
There will be a memorial service 1 pm Wednesday, November 28 at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, Limestone & Milltown Rds., Wilmington, where friends may call after 12 noon. Interment will be private.

Ruth Ann Tupp Bell Age 75 died Nov. 25, 2001. She was a Democratic Committee Women, having started her political activities with the first Presidential campaign of Adlai Stevenson. She was a member of Emily's List, a women's fund raising arm for Democratic candidates. She had great interest in women's causes and human rights. She was a grant proposal volunteer for YWCA. She was a supporter of the arts, music and theater. She was a summer resident of Deer Isle, ME. She is survived by her husband, Stanley H.; daughter, Julia of Philadelphia; son, David of Las Vegas; and sister, Lee Lieberman of Ocean City, MD. William Q. Saienni, Sr., age 79 of Hockessin, DE, passed away suddenly on Wednesday afternoon, December 5, 2001.
Bill was born in Wilmington, DE March 12, 1922 to the late Quindillo and Domen-ica Saienni. He served our country as a member of the United States Army during World War II. He became a self-employed contractor with more than 55 years in the business.
Among the several companies he founded were Material Transit, Material Trucking, Blacktop Products, and his beloved "Beaver Blacktop". Through his hard work and that of his brothers, Elmer and Sam as partners, the Saienni Family Companies enjoyed many successful years in the construction industry. He was a member of the Elks, the Optimists and was a founding member of the Cavaliers Country Club. He was also an influence in establishing the Delaware Contractors Association.
Bill is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, William Q., Jr. and Marilyn Saienni of Hockessin; and his daughter and son-in-law, Gina M. and Gregory M. Bruxelles of Hockessin. His brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer and Joanne Saienni of Wilmington, DE, Sam and Eva Saienni of Hockessin; his sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Walt Slockett of Wilmington, DE; and grandchildren, William Mears, Patrice Swift and her husband, James, William Q., III, Adam and Gabriel Saienni, and Denise and Mark Bruxelles also survive. His nieces and nephews including Frank Marini, who was like a son to him; and his wife, Martha R. Saienni. Bill is also survived by Donna DeAscanis and her family: son, Joseph DeAscanis; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jamie Shuler; and grandchildren, Anthony Wickersham and Madison Shuler. He was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Mears in 1975.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 am Monday morning, December 10 at St. Mary of the Assumption R.C. Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, followed by entombment in All Saints cemetery. Friends may call from 6-9 pm Sunday evening, December 9 at the church.

Clarence L. "Buddy" Austin Age 82 of Townsend, DE passed away on Friday, August 30, 2002 at the Delaware Home & Hospital in Smyrna.
Mr. Austin had retired from the State of Delaware Highway Department after 35 years, he was a supervisor at the yard in Middletown for 33 years and had also worked for George & Lynch and James Julian Inc. before working for the State Highway.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Alice Austin on March 28, 2002.
He is survived by 4 sons, William H., Allen W. and Richard C., all of Townsend, and Gene L. of Florida; 4 daughters, Carol Lee Hutchison, Suzanne Leathern and Jill Gesulo all of Middletown, and Lynn K. Gagliardi of Newark; a sister, Ruth Ivory and a sister-in-law, Helen Austin, both of Townsend; 18 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grand children.

Si Kwong "Edward" Hom Age 66 of Wilmington, DE died August 29, 2002.
A native of Canton, China, Mr. Hom often sent money to China to build schools or help pay for weddings and other events for fellow villagers who otherwise could not afford it. Mr. Hom was the owner of Yang's Chinese Food. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and home remodeling.
A loving and caring husband and father who was devoted to his family, he is survived by his wife, Lena Wong; 2 sons, Edward W. Hom & Andrew Hom, all of Wilmington; 1 brother, Si Lim Hom and his wife, Shuk Hing Hom and daughters, Ruby and Visy Hom; 1 grandson, Alex Hom.
The funeral service will be held at 11 am, Thursday, September 5 at the MCCREY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy. (Rt. 2 east @ Duncan Rd.) where friends may call after 10 am. Interment will follow at All Saints cemetery.

Jennie E. Joseph Age 70 of Richardson Park, DE formerly of Chester, PA died Sunday, October 13, 2002.
Jennie who was a homemaker took pride and joy in providing a home for her family.
Jennie was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Louis Joseph, Sr., who died in 1995. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah A. and Allen Jones with whom she had been living with; 4 sons, Anthony Joseph and his wife, Cathy of Trainer, PA, Louis Joseph, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Bear, DE, Michael Joseph of New Castle, DE, and Francis Joseph and his wife, Amy of Arnold, MD; and 7 grandchildren.

Marie H. Robertson Age 88 passed away October 11, 2002 in Wilmington Hospital.
Wife of the late Crawford Robert Robertson; mother of Hazel Portlock; daughter of the late Irving and Mary Brown; sister of Ethel Davis and Evelyn Brown; also survived by 5 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
She was a member of the United Independent Methodist Church.

Carol F. Pemberton Ph. D.
Age 81 of Newark, DE, a retired University of Delaware Research psychologist, died on November 9, 2002 at Christiana Hospital, three weeks after being diagnosed with cancer.
She was born on Christmas Day, 1920, in Ithaca, New York, where her father, a South African authority on honeybees was working on his Ph.D. in entomology at Cornell. Carol was raised in South Africa, where she received a BA in English, and a BA and Master's Degree in Psychology from Rhodes University in Grahamstown. She worked during World War II as a welfare officer in a shoe factory, and then as a lecturer in psychology at the University of Witswatersrand, Johannesburg. She came to the United States in 1947, and received her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Chicago. It was here that she met Wilfred Pemberton, a fellow graduate student; they were married in 1948. Carol and her husband moved to Newark, Delaware in 1951, and raised four children there. From 1963 until 1985, she worked at the University of Delaware's Office of Institutional Research. She authored a widely publicized 1983 study of academic dishonesty among University students, as well as many other surveys of student and faculty attitudes and post-graduate employment. Her husband, a counseling psychologist at the University of Delaware, died in 1996. An active member of St. Thomas's Episcopal Parish, she served in the church's Stephen Ministry, doing lay counseling. She also served in the church's vestry and on numerous committees. Her interests included drawing and painting, knitting, duplicate bridge, writing her memoirs, and being a good grandmother.
She is survived by a brother, John Lundie, of Pretoria, South Africa; and by her 4 children, Alan Pemberton of Silver Spring, MD, Mahan Kaur Khalsa of Midway, UT, Margot Pemberton of Newark, DE, and Liz Pemberton Windle of Elkton, MD. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Johanna, Greta, Carly, Anna, and Nathan.
Funeral service will be at St. Thomas's Episcopal Parish in Newark, Delaware, on November 30th at 3 pm. Burial will be private.

Alma Deen Altfather Age 86 of Seaford, DE formerly of Columbia, SC died Saturday, November 9, 2002 at Methodist Manor House in Seaford, DE.
Born in Denton, MD, the daughter of the late William B. and Jessie Willis Deen. She was the owner of House of Frames & Paintings in Columbia, SC until retiring in 1980. Mrs. Altfather was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Seaford, DE. She was a graduate of Washington College, Chestertown, MD.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth W. Altfather, Sr., 2 sons, Kenneth W. Altfather, Jr. of Fairport, NY and Larry A. Altfather of Edisto Beach, SC; 3 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and a niece Barbara Ann Kellam of Salisbury, MD.
