JOHN MEANY
John Charles Meany “The Milk Man” Mr. John C. Meany, age 89, of Wilmington, DE, died on April 5, 2009 at home after a brief illness. Mr. Meany was a Delaware native, born in Wilmington on December 12, 1919, the son of John A. and Elizabeth S. Meany. He attended both parochial and public schools and was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School. John was president of Hy Point Dairy. He devoted his entire adult life to help build the family business on Beaver Valley Road. Mr. Meany was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys B. Meany in 2001 and his brothers, Charles, Paul and James. He is survived by his son, Robert J. Meany of Wilmington. In addition to his, he is survived by two grandchildren, Michelle Pietlock and her husband Michael of Hockessin, Leslie Pietropaulo and her husband Joseph of Wilmington. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Linda A. Meany of Wilmington and four great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Juanita Martin for the loving care she provided during John’s final days. Richard A. Menton, Jr. “Bud” Age 87, of Wilmington, DE (formerly of Elkton, MD) passed away peacefully and went home to be with the Lord and his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Helen, on September 15, 2009 at home. Bud was a WWII Army Air Force veteran. He was stationed in England and had been part of the D-Day invasion planning. Bud was a cabinetmaker and enjoyed woodworking, gardening and playing horseshoes. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen Zakrzewski Menton. Bud is survived by his sons and daughters–in -law, Richard A., III and Emmajane Holm-Menton, Timothy P. and Elizabeth Menton and Dennis J. and Margaret Erickson- Menton, 11 grandchildren, George, Ted, & Candi Holm, Timothy, Jennifer, Katherine, Richard, IV, Gwendolyn, Dennis E., Clara and John, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great , great-grandchildren. REVEREND WILLIAM MERRILL
William Burke Merrill The Reverend William B. Merrill, a much beloved priest of the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 15, 2009. He would have been 89 in February. Father Bill was born in Los Angeles, CA to the late William L. and Helen E. Merrill. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor and proudly served as a pilot during World War II. After the war Fr. Bill graduated from the University of Delaware and Episcopal Theological Seminary, Cambridge, Mass. He was ordained first as a deacon in 1959 and a year later as a priest. Fr. Bill became curate at Immanuel Church, Highlands, then rector at St. James, Stanton. Upon joining the cathedral staff at Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio, he became director of Wade Park Manor and served at All Saints Episcopal Church in Parma, Ohio. During his tenure at All Saints, Fr. Bill began a program for adolescent substance abusers. Returning to Delaware he later became the director of the Delaware Division of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. During this time Fr. Bill undertook the development of interim ministry for the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware. He served in numerous interim positions throughout the state, including the ministry team at St. Martha's Church, Bethany Beach. In later years Fr. Bill served at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church as a pastoral associate, especially caring for the sick and shut-in of the parish. Throughout his ministry he brought dedication, faith, and an irrepressible sense of humor. His first wife, Constance, died in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Hall Merrill; a daughter, Kathleen M. Pressey (Ernest);a son, Robert A. Merrill (Lynn); a step-son, Willis Guyer,III (Marjorie); a step-daughter, Margaret G. Johns (David); 2 sisters, Mary Jane Carson and Helen M. Harold (Derek); 10 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 21, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 2800 Duncan Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808. The viewing and interment will be held privately. MILDRED MILLER
Mildred N. Miller Age 88, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family. She will join her mother, father, brother, sister and many in heaven. Mildred began her career as a secretary at the Quonset Point Naval Base in Rhode Island. She then went on to work as a secretary from 1960- 1988 at Atlas Chemical Co., now known as AstraZeneca. Mildred was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and volunteered at the Christiana Hospital. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, music, reading and crocheting. Mildred especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Mary Neary, her sister and brother, Doris and Eugene Neary and her son-in-law, David Hickman. Mildred is survived by her children, John C. Miller and his wife Bess, Linda M. Schaeffer, and Charlene M. Hickman and her friend Haney Counts, her grandchildren, Michelle, Michael and his wife Jana, Erin and her husband Matthew, Kelly and her husband Patrick, David and Rebecca. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, William, Samuel, Benjamin and Alexandra. Edith Minutella Age 89, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on April 13, 2009 surrounded by her loving family. Edith was a graduate of Wilmington High School and Goldey Beacom Business School. She was the secretary for the president of Colonial National Bank in Wilmington. Edith was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also a member of St. Mary Magdalen Church. Her beloved husband, Severino “Sibby” Minutella died in 1985. Edith is survived by her daughters, Francine Passerini and her husband, Robert Fitch of Wilmington, and Denise Billow and her husband, Michael of Morristown, NJ; 2 brothers, Ernest DiSabatino of Naples, FL, and Joseph DiSabatino of Wilmington; 1 sister, Eleanor Lowe of Wilmington; 3 grandchildren, Jeffrey M. Passerini, Jennifer A. Neal and her husband, Patrick, and Matthew R. Triolo; and 2 great grandchildren, Patrick Neal, Jr. and Jack Neal. Joe Bowden Mitchell, age 79, of Wilmington, DE, and formerly of Roanoke, VA, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at Wilmington Hospital. Joe attended Jacksonville University, graduating in 1951; he later attended the University of Alabama to earn a Master’s in Distributive Arts Education, graduating in 1954, and George Peabody University to earn a Master’s in Library Science, graduating in 1961. He began his career as a teacher at Key West High School, moving to Illinois State University where he was the librarian. Joe later served as the director of the library at Radford College and Ferum College from where he retired. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Martha Rhea Mitchell of Wilmington, DE; son, David Mitchell and his wife, Donna, of Wilmington, DE; daughter, Julia Wilson and her husband, Dale of Springfield, VA; and grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephanie, Katlyn, and Andrew. Ralph F. Moffett Age 76, of Bear, DE passed away on January 3, 2009 at his home. Ralph was born in Newark, DE and was a lifelong resident of New Castle County. He owned and operated Moffett Custom Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. in Wilmington for 30 years. Ralph was also an Army Veteran of the Korean War. Ralph is survived by his wife, Catherine P. Moffett; 1 brother, Lee Roy Tibbett (Shirley); 1 sister, Elaine Jackson (Willis); step-son, Thomas Murphy; 2 step-daughters, Julia Flanagan, and Melinda Willey (Matthew); 7 step-grandchildren, Joseph, Amanda, Charles, Jonathan, Isabella, David, and Nicholas; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie King Tibbett and Lee Roy Tibbett; 5 brothers, Bill, Harry, Charles, Raymond, and Marvin; and 1 sister, Phyllis. Caroline Moon “Connie” Caroline Moon, 95, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, June 21, 2009. A long time resident of Delaware, she was born in McKeesport, PA to the late Thomas and Ethel (McCune) Russell. She attended the Pennsylvania State University and worked as a branch manager at Artisan’s Bank for many years before retiring in the 1970s. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling with her husband David, family and friends. She was an active member of Peninsula McCabe United Methodist Church of Wilmington, DE. Most important in her life was a focus on and devotion to family. She has been aptly described as the matriarch and spirit of a large and diverse extended family. She will be greatly missed by all whom she has touched and influenced through a lifetime of kindness, generosity and sincere caring. Connie is survived by her husband of 33 years, David E. Josephine M. Moxham Age 77 of Wilmington, DE passed away on April 27, 2009. Mrs. Moxham was a short order cook at General Motors for 17 years before retiring. Josephine is survived by her husband of 46 years Edgar Moxham, her son Dennis A. Mulvehill of Wilmington, grandson Nicholas A. Mulvehill, sister, Anna Wagner and husband Dobby and nephew Dobby Wagner, Jr. and wife Linda all of NJ. Donna L. Mucha Age 63 of Newark, DE passed away June 9, 2009. Mrs. Mucha was a pediatric nurse at the former General Division before her retirement. Donna’s life was her family and she especially enjoyed her time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Rodger L. Mucha in 1990. Donna is survived by her daughters, Noel M. Mucha of Wilmington and Amanda M. Mucha of Newark; her grandchildren, Robby, Kevin and Danielle Wiercyski and her brother Mark Smith and his wife Tina of Dover, DE. Patricia Ann Murphy (Buterbaugh) Age 77, of Ebony, VA, formerly of Hockessin, DE, passed away on August 5, 2009 at VMU Medical Center in Richmond, VA. Patricia was preceded in death by her son, Karl Buterbaugh, her daughter, Kathleen Ferpes and her great-granddaughter Jocelyn Sawyer. She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Buterbaugh, her daughter, Carol McFann and her husband Gene, her granddaughter, Brittany Ferpes, her great grandsons, Jasper and Jeremiah Sawyer, her step-grandson, Michael McFann and his wife Oribel and her companion of many years, William Marancik. Pat will be dearly missed by all of her friends. WILLARD "BILL" MURPHY
Willard L. Murphy Willard “Bill” Murphy passed away on February 14, 2009, at the age of 71, in Wilmington, DE. Born in Claymont, DE, and a graduate of Claymont High School, Bill lived most of his adult life in Wilmington, but called both Rehoboth Beach, DE, and Fort Myers, FL, “home” during his final years. Throughout his life, Bill worked as a skilled model maker for various companies, before retiring from the Engineering Division of Raytheon Company in 1998. Bill will be remembered mostly for possessing a fear of God, the skill to build or fix just about anything, a clever sense of humor, a level head, and a deep love for his family. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Doris Murphy; two daughters, Terry L.M. Cragg and Lori-Ann Gelinas; their respective husbands, Jeff Cragg and Geoff Gelinas; as well as seven grandchildren, Chase Miller, Tyler Cragg, Connor Gelinas, Madison Cragg, Elise Gelinas, Garrett Gelinas, and Grant Cragg; all of whom are residents of Wilmington. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 21, at 2 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, located at 927 Wilson Rd, Wilmington, DE, 19803. William Francis Murphy, Jr. “Bill” “Murph” Age 80, of Wilmington, DE, died on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Forwood Manor in Wilmington, DE. Bill was born in Norwood, MA, raised in Walpole, MA and graduated from Walpole High School. He attended Harvard University, earning a B.A. in chemistry in 1950. He then began a career with the DuPont Company that would span more than 35 years, including positions in atomic energy at the Savannah River Plant near Aiken, SC, and in textile fibers in Kinston, NC, Old Hickory, TN and in Wilmington, DE. He retired from DuPont in 1986 and took a position with the spin-off company, Reemay, Inc. While at Reemay, Bill invented several pleated, non-woven filters which were patented. He retired from Reemay in 1998 and continued to work as a consultant until 2005. Bill was an avid reader, was active in the Darley Swim Club and in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, and served as a eucharistic minister at Wilmington Hospital. Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan Girard Murphy; by his brother John D. Murphy of Walpole, MA and sister Maureen Carter of Dover, MA; by his children Elizabeth M. Topp (David) of Lafayette, IN, Kathryn M. Thompson (Daniel) of Baltimore, MD, William F. Murphy, III (Anne) of Westminster, CO, and Byron G. Murphy (Jeanette) of Hockessin, DE; and by his eleven grandchildren. The family is deeply grateful to the community in North Wilmington for their care and support during Bill’s illness, particularly to Dr. Javed Gilani and Bill’s other physicians; to PRO Physical Therapy, Wilmington Hospital, Forwood Manor and Compassionate Care Hospice; and to his friends of long-standing. Paul J. Myers Age 96, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2009 at Foulk Manor North. Born the only child of Grover (Cleve) and Alice Myers. For over four decades, Paul was caretaker of various cemeteries in New Castle County that included Chester Bethel, Grace Episcopal, Mount Salem, Newark Union, Mount Pleasant, and Mount Lebanon. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Margaret (Peg). Paul is survived by his son Harold and his wife Catherine, grandson James, granddaughter-in-law, Donna DiSantis, and longtime companion Rosalie Hickey. Paul's family would like to extend many thanks and appreciation to all the Caregivers at Forward Manor and Foulk Manor North. RUTH NEAL
Ruth W. Neal Age 77, died on Sunday December 14th 2008 after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. She went to Lycoming College where she was known as “Wickie.” She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed traveling, especially in Europe. She was also a talented artist. She volunteered her time with the American Cancer Society and also at the Episcopal Church Home. She was married to the late George D. Neal. Ruth is survived by her daughters, Deborah Davis and Dona Robinson and her husband Joseph; her grandchildren, Erin Neal, Dana Smith, Monica Davis and two step-grandchildren Jessica Niehaus and Blair Robinson. Also surviving are two great grand- children. A gathering will take place on Friday December 19th at 11:00 to 12:00 at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy. at Dunkin Road, Wilmington, DE with a service to celebrate Ruth’s life beginning at 12:00 noon Burial will be private. Lt. Col. Charles E. Nickerson, Jr. USA-Ret Age 91 passed away at the VA Hospital in Wilmington. Charles was born in Wilmington and educated in Sudlersville, MD. After graduating from Sudlersville High School he joined the US Army and served his country for 33 years. He fought in WWII, The Korean War, and Vietnam. After he retired from the Army, he worked diligently for the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners Children’s Hospital. Charles was predeceased by his beloved wife “Pibby” and his brother William. He is survived by his loving sister, Dorothy and her husband, Henry. Also left to cherish his memory are his nephews, William and David Nickerson and his niece, Fay Sweeney. A funeral service will be held at Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, 2220 N. DuPont Hwy., Wilmington on 9-10-09 at 11:00 a.m. where friends may call after10:00 a.m.. J. Edward Norton Age 84, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on February 12, 2009 surrounded by his loving family at Arden Courts, Wilm., DE Ed was born in Penns Grove, NJ to the late Kathryn P. Morton and James Gill Norton. Raised in Carneys Point, he studied chemical engineering at Drexel and later graduated from Philadelphia College of Textiles. Ed proudly served his country in the US Army during WW II in the 87th Chemical Mortar Battalion, landing in Normandy, fighting in Northern France, Belgium and Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, received the Bronze Star of Valor, and attained the rank of Second Lieutenant. Ed worked for DuPont as a technical marketing specialist, Textile Fibers Dept. He spent 5 years in Geneva, Switzerland and returned to Wilmington, Center Road, retiring in 1985 after 37 yrs. of service. Ed traveled to many European countries with his family in their VW bus but particularly enjoyed vacationing at the Jersey Shore(Ocean City and Townsend Inlet). Active in scouting he supported many troop functions. His hobbies included woodworking, carving, stamp and coin collecting. He created many decorative objects in his well equipped and organized workshop. Ed is survived by his loving wife Betty of 57 yrs; his son Gary(Lynne), daughter, Lizanne and 3 grandchildren, Christie(Nick), Jonathan and Laura.
