Florence Campbell Vazquez Florence Campbell Vazquez, age 85 of Dagsboro, DE died July 5, 2009 surrounded by her family. Florence was born & raised in Hockessin, DE daughter of the late John Francis Campbell & Della Tucker Campbell. She lived most of her life in Wilmington, DE raising her 4 children. Florence was a dedicated member of Elsmere Presbyterian Church for many years having served on the board of Deacons and was a member of the Women’s Association. She was married to the late Benjamin F. Gray, then later divorced and married to the late Wilfredo C. Vazquez. Florence had been living with her daughter, Leslie and her family for the past 3 years and will be sadly missed. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, “Willie” Vazquez in July 2003, her parents, John & Della Campbell, 9 brothers, Jack, Bill, Sam, Thomas, Morris, Robert Albert, Norman, Kenneth and 2 sisters Katherine & Mary. Florence is survived by her 4 children, Connie M. Rea & husband Larry of Millsboro, DE, Benjamin T. Gray & wife Carole of Galena, MD, Robin C. Gray & wife Sharon of Elsmere, DE, Leslie M. Clark & husband Dave of Dagsboro, DE; 7 grandchildren, Michael Stewart, Jennifer Cortese, Heather Ruiz, Julie Gray, Megan Gray, Michelle Clark, and D.J. Clark; 5 great grandchildren, Nicole Votta, Madison Cortese, Anthony Cortese, Brandon Ruiz, Alex Ruiz and 1 soon to be great great granddaughter; She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and 2 sister in laws, Ruth Campbell of Newark, DE and Ann Campbell of NJ. ELLEN VIDEN
Ellen Simon Viden, 90, loving wife, caring sister, devoted mother, doting grandmother and proud great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family on June 9, 2009. She lived a long and happy life. Ellen was born and raised in Delaware. She attended the University of Delaware where she earned a B.A. in Fine Arts and Masters in Art, specializing in painting. She continued her studies at the Delaware Art Museum. While attending the U of D, she met her husband, Howard N. Viden, captain of the football team, with whom she shared 69 years of marriage. Ellen was an artist and enjoyed sharing her passion for art with others throughout her life. She worked as an art teacher in the Alfred I. duPont/Brandywine School District for 28 years and taught many students, including the gifted and exceptional. Ellen made art accessible to everyone. At one point in her career, she headed the Art department for the district. Her dedication and enthusiasm earned her Teacher of the Year representative for the A.I. duPont School District in 1976. After retiring from the school district, Ellen continued to be an active member in the art community. She received an award from Art Educators of DE in 1986. Ellen exhibited her artwork in venues throughout the state and won awards and honorable mentions for some of her pieces. She was creative and her artwork included oil painting, watercolor, weaving and clay. Ellen’s love for art and family was always apparent. Her home was filled with artwork, and, of course, pictures of her family and their artwork from over the years. She enjoyed traveling with family, attending school performances, celebrating birthdays and holidays. Her heart was filled with so much kindness and love… (Ellen had such a big heart filled with kindness.) She always took opportunities to tell family and friends how special they were to her. She regularly donated to charities and made contributions to support the Arts and local museums. Ellen was devoted to her family. She liked collecting teddy bears from her great-grandchildren, caring for her many pets and watching the flowers in her yard blossom. She even admired the bunnies that would nibble her plants. Ellen was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Delta Kappa Gamma – Honorary Society for Women Educators, the A.A.U.W., National League of American Pen Women and Lombardy Retired Teachers. The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to Home Instead Senior Care and Compassionate Care Hospice. She is survived by her husband, Howard N. Viden, their only child, H. Hunter Viden died in 2005. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Ellen R. Viden; 2 granddaughters, Kimberly Blatz (Philip) and Cynthia Sipperly (Jason); 3 great-grandchildren, Katie and Hunter Blatz and Cooper Sipperly; and her sister, Mildred Simon Cook. A funeral service will be held at 11am, Monday, June 15 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 13th and Broom Sts., where a visitation will be held from 10-11am (additional parking is available at the lot of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 13th and Rodney Sts.). D. Zachary Vinson Age 18, of Newark, DE, passed away suddenly on July 15, 2009 at the Christiana Hospital. Zachary was a Newark High School graduate. He enjoyed baseball, video games and spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Vinson. Zachary is survived by his mother Dawn; his brother Josh; his sisters Megan, Amanda and Sara and his grandparents, Bruce Maag, Helen Vinson and Barbara Johnson. He is also survived by 2 uncles, 5 aunts and many cousins. Daniel M. Walsh Age 61, of Bellmawr, NJ, passed away on March 2, 2009. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam. Dan is survived by his wife, Christine S. DAVID E. WALTER
David E. Walter Age 72, of Newark, DE, passed away on September 20, 2009 at the Christiana Hospital. He was born in Elizabeth, NJ and resided in Westmont, NJ until moving to Delaware in the late 1960’s. He retired as an electronic specialist for E.I. DuPont and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Dave joined the Wilmington Trail Club so his family could enjoy canoeing and cross country skiing. He was also a member of The Bait Wasters Fishing Club. He was a ministerial servant of the Iron Hill congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses where his smiling face and encouragement will be sadly missed. Dave is survived by his wife of 26 years, Janet Nash Walter; his children, Andrew David Walter and his wife Jennifer; Elaine May Meador; Janet May Cesak; his step son Michael Senn; his sister in law Jeannette Vause Walter; his sister Shirley Gale and 4 grandchildren. Other family members are Joyce Valentine, Georgiana Shrouds and her husband Jimmy, Jackie Gouge and her husband Bob, and Nieces; Nephews, Mother in law Dorothy Nash. MARGIT E. A. WASSEN passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at the Methodist Country House. Born in 1908 in Stockholm, Sweden, Mrs. Wassen celebrated her 100th birthday July 30th, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Anne Eastman and her sister Alice D’Onofrio. She leaves a loving family; her daughter, Margit A. and her husband Spencer Stradley; four grandchildren, Shermer Stradley III; Warren Stradley, and his wife Donna; Christina Rydgren and her husband Robert; Susan Sprague and her husband Michael; and five great grandchildren, twins Corinne and Stephanie Rydgren, Alexander, Michelle and Elizabeth Sprague and baby Stradley coming in June. Her first husband, Neils W. Anderson passed away very suddenly after a long marriage in 1971. After some years, she met and married Kurt Wassen. He passed away after a long illness in 1983. Mrs. Wassen has a stepson Kurt and his wife Joan Wassen; three step granddaughters JaneWassen, Judith Radford, and Carolyn Craig and her husband Mark; step grandson “Kip” Kurt Wassen and his wife Lisa, and two step great grandchildren Davis and Allison Mark all of South Carolina. She was the oldest member of Grace Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, visited church shut-ins and was very active with the ladies circle. The family wishes to thank the Health Care Center staff at the Methodist County House for the excellent care that Mrs. Wassen received during the last months of her life. Memorial service will be held at the Methodist Country House at the convenience of the family. DORIS WATSON
Doris M. Watson, 85, of Claymont, DE, formerly of Clarksville, DE, died on January 31, 2009. Doris was born at home in Trainer, PA to the late Flemon and Rose Van Landingham. She devoted her life to her home and family. For a brief time, Doris worked for the Childrens’ Cottage in Lima, PA. She was an enthusiastic volunteer for A.C.T.S. in Clarksville and she enjoyed hunting for treasures at thrift shops. Her devoted husband of 65 years, Weston B. Watson died in 2006, their beloved and only child, Wayne R. Watson died in 2005. Doris is survived by her sister, Dorothy R. Henderson and her sister-in-law, Betty Marvian. Other survivors include her daughter-in-law, Kathleen Wadman Watson; her niece and nephew-in-law, Judy and Jack Harper who cared for her; and other nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1pm, Friday, February 6 (which would have been her son’s 60th birthday) at St. George’s Methodist Church cemetery, Clarksville. John N. Watson "Jack" Age 55, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at his home Thursday, July 16, 2009. A native and lifelong resident of Marshallton, DE, Jack was the son of the late Thomas E. Watson and Bunny (Wilson) Watson, also of Marshallton, DE. He graduated from Delcastle Vocational Technical High School in 1972. After high school graduation Jack joined the Painters L. U. 100. He pursued his interests of wildlife photography, NHRA racing, hunting and fishing throughout his life. He was also active in his community through his charitable work with Ducks Unlimited and other nonprofit organizations. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Scott Watson. He will be sadly missed by his brother, Buzz Watson of Toledo, OH; his sisters, Kate Watson of Bedford, TX and Judie Watson of Hurst, TX and his nieces and nephews, Tom Watson, Sara Watson, William Stansell Jr., Robert Toney, Thomas Toney, and his great nieces and nephews. We will miss his wry humor and, most of all, his big heart and gentle hand. Roy Bayard Watson Age 88, of Wilmington, DE passed away on April 14, 2009. He was a graduate of Goldey-Beacom College, however, decided to work outdoors as a Milkman for Abbott Dairies in Philadelphia. Bayard served with the Army in the Solomon Islands during WW II. His wife, Irene Watson died in 1983. HOWARD "WHITEY" WHITTAKER
Howard C. “Whitey” Whittaker, age 79, died Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at home. Howard was born in Linwood, PA to the late Evelyn and Howard E. Whittaker. He served in the US Army and later worked as a tool and die maker, retiring from Speakman Company after 44 years of service. In addition to work, Howard enjoyed fishing and woodworking and was a member of the Granite Corinthian Lodge #34 AF&AM. He also machine knitted hats for charity, knitting over 2,000 during his lifetime. Howard was predeceased by his sister, Linda Andreini. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy T. Whittaker; daughter, Donna Ricchuiti and husband Mike of Bear, DE; brothers, Ralph and his wife Bobbie of Lakehurst, NJ, and Larry and his wife Dianne of Wilmington, DE; and sister, Marion McHenry and husband Tom of Wilmington, DE. Kathleen M. Wiggins (nee Eysaldt), age 52, died suddenly on Friday, September 4, 2009 at the Christiana Hospital. Kathleen was born and raised in Wilmington, graduating from Del Castle High School in 1975. She worked for a number of years a cosmetologist at several different firms. Kathleen also worked as a pharmacy technician at Happy Harrys, and several years a Hodgson High School. She was a past member of the Mill Creek Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and will be remembered by her family who describe her unique personality as being that of a “perpetual teenager.” She was predeceased by her father, Nicholas Eysaldt in June of 2001. She is survived by her husband, Wayne Wiggins; mother, Pat Eysaldt; brother, Fred Eysaldt; and in-laws, Larry Wiggins and his wife Dot, Dianne Yates and her husband, Ed, Shirley Wiggins, and Pauline Wiggins; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Linda M. Wiley (Candeloro) Age 56 of Middletown, DE left this world to be with her mom Mary, her brothers Sam, Joe, John and her grandsons, Carson and Tyler on September 26, 2009. Linda was a devoted wife, mom and mom mom to her family. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Kit (Pete) C. John A. Wilson Age 89, of Wilmington, DE passed away at home on June 13, 2009. Mr. Wilson was born in Centerville, DE to the late Charles and Mary E. Wilson. He served his country in the U.S. Navy in WWII and took part in the invasion of Sicily and also landed on Utah Beach, Normandy on D-Day. After his discharge from the Navy in the summer of 1946 he returned to Delaware and was Owner/Operator of Wilson’s Service Station for many years. John was preceded in death by his brothers, James C. Wilson and Robert L. Wilson. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Margaret Murray Wilson, 3 nephews, 8 nieces and 16 great nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday June 16 at 1:30 pm in the McCrery Memorial Chapel, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Rd. Friends are welcome for visitation at 12:30 PM. June Ruth Wilson Age 85, of Wilmington, DE passed away on May 6, 2009. She was a member of Red Lion Evangelical Free Church. June is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bayard H. CHARLES WRIGHT
Charles M. Wright Of Wilmington, DE died Monday December 1, 2008, at home. He was born in Northampton, MA on May 25, 1924 to the late David S. and Florence Wright. Charlie was a loving and devoted husband and father of five, and adored his nine grandchildren. He served in the Army Artillery during WWII as a staff sergeant in the Battery A 291st Field Artillery Battalion, serving in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he returned to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to complete his B.S. in Chemistry. He then earned his MS in Chemistry from Wesleyan University. He was employed by Hercules/Himont for the next 40-plus years as a Chemist with various responsibilities, receiving several patents for his work, including one for rocket fuel. Charlie served as the President of the Delaware chapter of the American Chemical Society. He supported the Red Cross with regular blood and platelet donations. Charlie was preceded in death by his son, William D. Wright, and his brother David J. Wright. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sally Davis Wright; his four sons, Charles E. Wright and his wife Michelle of Argyle, Texas, and their children Jenifer and Charles; James M. Wright and his wife Rebekah, of Glastonbury, Connecticut, and their children, Merrick, Katherine, and Charlotte; Thomas S. Wright and his wife Anne, of Denver, Colorado, and their children Elizabeth and Grace; David S. Wright and his wife Florence, of Naperville, Illinois, and their children Samuel and Sarah. His siblings Catherine Grandia, of New Mexico; Caroline Putnam, her husband Robert, of Ohio; George Wright, his wife Hope, of Massachusetts; And his sister-in-law Rita Wright, of Massachusetts. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 4, at 2 p.m. at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennans Church Road, Wilmington. Elmer G. Yergey “Bob” Age 92, of Wilmington, DE passed away on December 11, 1008. He was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Mae Yergey. Bob was Navy veteran of WW II serving as a Fireman First Class on the USS Serene AM 300. His engagements during WW II were; Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Zebra Sweep, Arcadia Sweep, Sasebo-Nagasaki, Tsushime Straits, and the Occupation of Japan. He was a lab technician at the DuPont Experimental Station, retiring in 1978 after 24 years service. He was also a member of Mid County Senior Center. His wife of 65 years, Elizabeth F. Yergey died in 2004. Bob is survived by his children; Patricia Y. Webber and her husband, William A. with whom he lived, and Robert P. Yergey and his wife, Patti of Glendale, AZ, 1 grandson; Christopher and his wife, Stacie, 4 great grandchildren; Cassidy, Liam, Anna, and Sammy, 1 step-granddaughter, Christine Benets and her husband, Lee, 4 step-great grandchildren; Briana, Amanda, Belle, and Skye, and special friend, Helen Galbreath. Ruth A. Yost On Thursday, April 23, 2009, after a long illness, Ruth A. Yost, age 86 of Shipley Manor went home to be with her Lord and Savior and to join her husband George H. Yost who preceded her to heaven. Mrs. Yost was born in Wilmington and graduated from P.S. duPont High School and worked for Wilmington Trust Co. for 30 years before retirement. She was a charter member of Brandywine Valley Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. At the center of her heart was her love for the Lord and her husband and family. She was a wonderful wife, mom, momom, nan, and best friend. Ruth was known for her skill as a seamstress and her kindness and generosity to all she knew. She will be greatly missed but we know with confidence we will see her again! Mrs. Yost is survived by her two children, Richard A. Yost and his wife Valerie, and Esther M. Goertz and her husband, Tim; 5 grandchildren, Jonathan T. Goertz, Karen Yost Cramer and her husband Ryan, Jeffrey R. Yost and his wife Elizabeth, Heather R. Goertz, and James A. Yost; and 4 great granddaughters who were the special love of her life, Jenna, Julie, Joanna, and Jocelyn Yost. The family would like to extend a special thank you to those from Shipley Manor, Compassionate Care Hospice, and Brandywine Valley Baptist Church who cared for her during her illness. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the McCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike (Rt. 202, S. of Silverside Rd.) Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to Brandywine Valley Baptist Church, 7 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803 or Compassionate Care Hospice, 702B Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19805.
