Nathan E. Cagle,
World War II veteran
Nathan E. Cagle, 87, of Lewes, formerly of Wilmington, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Cagle, affectionately known as Gene, was born Dec. 23, 1919, in Athens, Tenn., son of the late Hobart and Susie Cagle. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Kenneth and Milton, and is survived by sister Martha and brother Lloyd.
Gene proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army, 1st Army, 2nd Division. During his military service, he fought at the Battle of the Bulge with many other honorable veterans. He was discharged on April 12, 1946, after earning the Combat Infantry Badge and various campaign ribbons and medals.
After leaving the Army, Gene joined E.I. DuPont and traveled throughout the world building chemical plants. While working for DuPont in Argentina, he met his beautiful and loving wife of 59 years, Mary Virginia Briggs. They were united in marriage on Dec. 4, 1948, in Wilmington.
Gene and Mary created a great family that included their sons Nathan Cagle Jr. of Sea Bright, N.J., Karl Cagle of Fairfax, Va., and Kenneth Cagle of St. Marys, Ga. His extended family included Nate’s wife Linda, Karl’s wife Kathy, and Ken’s wife Linda. He was loved and adored by his sons, their wives, together with his granddaughters Kristin, Ashley and Caroline and his grandsons Brian, Brian’s wife Sara, Scott and Kristopher; and his great-granddaughters Chloe and Ellie.
Gene had a long career as a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 74. He retired in 1981 and enjoyed 28 years living in Lewes. Gene loved fishing, working in his bountiful garden, spending time with family and friends, and Mary’s cooking.
He will be missed and his memories will live forever in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, at Groome United Methodist Church, Savannah Road and Dewey Avenue, Lewes.

Deborah A. McCray,
dietician aide
Deborah A. “Debbie” McCray, 49, of near Georgetown, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at home.
Debbie was born Oct. 1, 1958, in Lewes, to the late James Wise and Minnie Hopkins Bibbins.
She was a dietician aide working for Green Valley Terrace, formerly the Millsboro Nursing Home, for 24 years.
Mrs. McCray attended the Bayshore Community Church in Gumboro. She was a caring, giving person who was friendly to everybody. She loved soap operas and game shows, in particular “Wheel of Fortune,” loved shopping for shoes and clothes, and she loved parties.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Denikia Hopkins; and granddaughter, Tionna White.
Debbie is survived by her husband of 12 years, Reuben McCray; a son, Jackie Hopkins of Georgetown; a daughter, Sheena Hopkins of Georgetown; three brothers, James Hopkins of Salisbury, Md., Ronald Hopkins of Rehoboth, and Tyrone Hopkins of Millsboro; two sisters, Delphine Williams of Millsboro, and Vanessa Hopkins Grey of Georgetown; six grandchildren; and her canine companion, Sadie Mae McCray.
Services will be at noon, Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church, Route 113 south of Millsboro, where friends may call at 11 a.m. Friends may also call from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro.
Pastor Sam Dennis will officiate the service.
Interment will be private.

Richard G. Ladbrook,
retired welder
Richard G. Ladbrook, 75, of Millsboro, formerly of Ocean View, passed away Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. He was born Jan. 29, 1932, in Baltimore, Md., son of the late Richard and Loretta Phelps Ladbrook. He was a certified welder with the Bethlehem Steel Co. in Baltimore, retiring after 32 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 7234 of Ocean View.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Janet Friedel Ladbrook in 1992.
He is survived by three sons, Richard Ladbrook and his wife Paula, Kevin Ladbrook and his wife Jennifer, and Aaron Ladbrook and his wife Donna; three daughters, Deborah Fertig and her husband Wayne, Wanda Snyder and her husband Jim, and Laura Starner and her husband Ricky; 13 grandchildren, Richard Ladbrook, Daniel Ladbrook, Christopher Ladbrook, Andrew Neidert, Brandon Ladbrook, Brittany Ladbrook, Jessica Ladbrook, Wayne Fertig Jr. and his wife Debra, Ryan Miller and his wife Alison, William Mercer and his wife Lindsey, Grant Snyder, Amber Starner, and Ricky Starner Jr.; seven great-grandchildren, Karlin Fertig, Trinity and Autumn Mercer, Jonathon and Steven Cocho, Robert and Melanie Bedaliance; and a sister, Betty Wilhoit.
A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Frankford chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St., Frankford, DE 19945.
Burial will be private.

Helen Keaveney Arns,
retired bookkeeper
Helen Keaveney Arns of Milton, formerly of Fallston, Md., died Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at her residence.
Mrs. Arns was born in Elizabeth, N.J., daughter of William Patrick and Julia Monahan Keaveney.
She was a graduate of Battin High School.
She had formerly been employed as a bookkeeper for Thomas & Betts Power Co. in Newark, N.J. She was a full-time homemaker, devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family.
Mrs. Arns was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Lewes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Arns, in 1985; and two brothers, William P. Keaveney II and Joseph Keaveney.
Mrs. Arns is survived by four daughters, Gerri J. Smith and her husband Doug of Forest Hill, Md., Janet Ray and her husband John of Milton, Barbara Arns and her husband Dr. Thomas Shaner of Hughesville, Pa., and Susan A. Adams and her husband Robert of Camden; six grandchildren, Christopher and Jackie Barbour, Nicholas and Allison Adams, Samantha Smith and Charles Shaner; two brothers, Edward Keaveney of South River, N.J., and Donald Keaveney of Roselle, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13, at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Del. 1 at Five Points, Lewes, with Father Jim Hreha officiating.
Interment will be private in Bel Air Memorial Gardens, Bel Air, Md.

Bernard G. Morgan Jr.,
Millsboro resident
Bernard “Butch” G. Morgan Jr., 62, of Millsboro, and formerly of Wilmington, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at home.
He is survived by two sons, Brian Morgan and his wife Jackie, Robert Morgan and his fiancée JoAnn; a daughter, Denise Dancy and her husband Robert; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his loving and devoted companion, Ruth Morgan.
A memorial service was held at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Millsboro.

Harry E. Shockley,
gifted singer
Harry E. Shockley, 77, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, in the Heartland Hospice House, Newark. He was just three weeks away from his 78th birthday.
Mr. Shockley was born Nov. 21, 1930, in Lincoln, son of the late Elmore and Hattie Shockley.
He resided in the area and completed his education at Slaughter Neck Junior High School.
Mr. Shockley accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. J.O. Lockman.
He worked at the Milford Chicken Factory and did various jobs throughout the community.
Mr. Shockley met Betty Brown and had one son out of the union.
Singing was a great part of his Christian life. He especially loved to sing with his family and friends. His favorite songs were, “Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross,” “This Little Light of Mine” and “Somebody Pray for Me.”
After the passing of his mother and father, Mr. Shockley resided with his sister, Argatha Riddick, and later moved to the big city of Wilmington with his devoted niece, Ruth Ann Hazzard.
His immediate survivors include his sister, Argatha Riddick; one son, Richard L. Brown of Lincoln; his nieces, Ruth Ann Hazzard, Grace Young, Nettie Brown, Vanessa Lassiter and Dorthea Miller; his nephews, Cecil Shockley, Lance White and Henry White Jr.; a sister-in-law, Mary Shockley of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Daren Morris, Tasha Piper, Darius Johnson, Rochelle Weaver and Richard L. Thomas; four great-grandchildren; 17 grandnieces and grandnephews; 18 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; and a host of family and friends.
Services were held at Wesley Chapel Church, Lincoln, with burial private.

John S. Moore,
computer tech
John S. Moore, 44, of North Troy, Vt., and formerly of Dover, died suddenly Saturday, Sept. 27, 2007, at his home.
John was born Nov. 25, 1962, in Dover, son of the late J. Stuart and Shirley M. (Boyer) Moore.
He made his living working in the computer technology field.
In his spare time, John enjoyed taking cars and trucks apart and (sometimes) putting them back together.
As a child, he spent many happy hours at his Pop-Pop’s shop, Johnny The Tailor.
John was a sweet and loving child who grew into a soft-spoken man with a gentle spirit.

John is survived by two aunts, Barbara A. (Boyer) Brown of Camden and Jerry Boyer of Hockessin; an uncle, Royal L. Boyer and his wife Lily of Lewes; his cousins, Donnie, Susan, Patti, Lisa, Kathy, Kelly, Karen and Gail and their respective families; as well as numerous close friends.
A private memorial service will be held at Silver Lake cemetery Saturday, Nov. 17.

Gladys Mae Long,

Gladys Mae Long, 58, of Milford, died of natural causes Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital.
Ms. Long was born July 22, 1949, in North Carolina.
She was a member of Greater Love Temple Church, Milford.
Ms. Long enjoyed spending time with loved ones, knitting and cooking for her family, friends and the neighborhood children. She especially enjoyed talking to her most favorite cousins, Dorothy Gibbs and Sandra Dandridge, as well as a dear and special friend, John Belfield.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Charity Wilson Long; a brother, Harold Hayes; a sister, Cynthia Long; and an uncle, Aaron Jones.
She is survived by four sons, Samuel L. Long and his wife Danielle of Millsboro, Nathan M. Long and his companion Anita of Milford, Gerome R. Long of Georgetown and Jason E. Long and his wife Tykeisha of Laurel; a daughter-in-law, Shelly T. Long of Lincoln; a sister, Shirley A. Perry of Milton; five brothers, George Long of Milton, Gregory Long of Smyrna, James Long of Darby, Pa., Charles Long and his wife Carolyn of Georgetown and Timothy R. Long of Milton; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, Nov. 10, at Greater Love Temple Church, Milford.
Burial was at Old Hickory cemetery, Lincoln.
