Odes Bartley
Mr. Odes Bartley, age 84, of Smyrna, DE, formerly of Newark, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 2, 2006, at his home.
Born in Penny, KY, on January 10, 1922, Mr. Bartley was one of 13 children born to the late Willard Bartley and Hama Kiser Bartley. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and worked as an auto inspector with Chrysler Corporation in Newark for 33 years, until his retirement in 1985.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Joanne McCabe Bartley; 4 children, Jennifer Sexton (Donnie) of Newark, DE, Tommy Wayne Bartley, Sr. (Barbara) of Newark, DE, Jerry Lynn Bartley (Robyn) of Manteca, CA; and Michael Bartley of Newark, DE; stepdaughter, Susie Cruson (Bobby) of NV; 5 brothers, Tremble Bartley, Johnny Bartley (Joyce), Offie Bartley (Peggy), Otis Bartley, and David Bartley (Linda); 4 sisters, Essie Elswick, Gladys Thomas (James), Minnie Belle Hamilton (Clifford), and Edith Hershek (Norman); 15 grandchildren, Rick, Shannon and Shelly Sexton, Stacie, Tommy II, Wendy and Kevin Bartley, Jason and Sheryl Bartley, Bill and Paul Shire, Shawnalee and Bobbie Cruson, Alex Kastelic and Zachary Keenan; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dora J. Bartley, a step-daughter, Debra Keenan Kastelic; grandson, Justin Michael Bartley; 2 brothers, Delmer Bartley and Emory Bartley; and a sister, Hessie Hamilton.
Friends may call 6-8 pm, on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 pm, on Wednesday, November 8, 2006, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Age 100, of Dover, DE, died peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday evening, November 1, 2006, at Westminster Village in Dover, DE, where he had resided for almost 4 years. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 6, 2006 at 2 pm, at Old Drawyers Church, Odessa, DE.

Joan W. (Woodworth) Downes
Age 94, a Beebe retiree, passed away peacefully in her daughter's home in Milton, DE.
Joan Woodworth Downes was born Joan Woodworth, on August 10, 1912, in Cleveland , OH. After losing her parents and identical twin sisters in a flu epidemic in 1918, Joan was raised by her aunt & uncle who ran a health food store. She always attributed her long and healthy life to her vegetarian upbringing. She was widowed by John Schoch Downes in 1956. Joan graduated from Catholic High School in 1926 at the age of 14. She was 1 of 3 female students at the University of Wisconsin where she eventually majored in medicine. She was the only woman to do so at that time. After losing her fiance in her last year of pre-med, she quit and moved to New York where she met her husband, John Downes, a prosecuting attorney. They moved to Rehoboth, DE in 1938. They built their home on Tidwater Street in Henlopen Acres, where they raised their 5 children.
Mrs. Downes is survived by her children, JoAnne Downes Whealton, of Milton, DE, John Michael Downes, of Rockhall, MD, Dana Downes Long, of Milton, DE, Lucy Downes Casey, of Cocoa Beach, FL and Oliver Lee Downes, of Milton, DE. She is also survived by grandchildren, Laura Downes, of Lewes, DE, John Michael Downes, Jr. of Dagsboro, DE, Dara Downes Hearn, of Lewes, DE, Chris D. Long, of Lewes, DE, Randy D. Long, of Millsboro, DE, Natalie Downes Doney, of Annapolis, MD, Bridget Downes Buchaloo, of Lewes, DE, Amy Downes Baker, of Oklahoma City, OK, Molly Downes Foraker, of Salisbury, MD, Jeremy James, of Orlando, FL, Kate Downes Walker, of Georgetown, DE, Matthew Downes Long, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Carol Downes Zigman of Sussex County, DE, and Debbie Downes, of Sussex County , DE; and 26 great grandchildren.
A graveside Service will be held at Epworth Methodist cemetery , Rehoboth Beach, DE, on Tuesday, October 24, at 1 pm, with Delaware Hospice Chaplain Doug Albert officiating. There will be no viewing.

Harvey L. Cupp, Jr.
Age 88,of Lewes, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 18, 2006.
Born in Richmond, VA, on November 29, 1918, Harvey moved with his family to Mifflintown, PA in 1926 where his father and uncles operated the local Ford dealership, Cupp Motors. Harvey graduated with honors from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelors degree in Aeronautical Engineering in June of 1940. At Pitt, Harrv participated in the Reserve Officer Training Corps where he was the Cadet Colonel of the ROTC Battalion. After college, he secured a position with the Engineering Department of the Naval Aircraft Factory in August 1940. He worked as an Engineer in the Power Plant Section until April of 1942. He accepted his Army Commission in Coast Artillery. Harvey served with anti-aircraft and infantry units in the African and European Theatres for the next 3½ years. Harvey participated in the African and Italian campaigns. During his time in the European theatre, he flew on bombing missions using his engineering expertise to improve performance and safety. For his war-time service he was awarded a Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Badge and Bronze Star. Harvey married
Marna Rose McGarraugh on September 1, 1945. As a civilian, Harvey returned to his position at the Naval Air Engineering Factory. Over the years Harvey moved up the ranks to serve as Superintendent of the Aircraft, Weapons and Ship Division and retired in 1975 as acting chief engineer of the Naval Air Engineering Center. During his career, Harvey also served in Brussels, as Technical Representative to NATO on aircraft operations from ships. In this role, he helped standardize helicopter and aircraft operations from ships of the Dutch, French, British and Belgian fleets. Following retirement, Harvey and Marna moved to Lewes, DE from their home in Pine Ridge, Media, PA. The small town atmosphere helped Harvey relax as he brought a wealth of organizational knowledge to several volunteer jobs including serving the Town as Chair of the Board of Adjustment, and serving the Lewes Historical Society as a docent for the maritime museum. Harvey was very active in St. Peters Church, and for many years managed the church cemetery. Harvey was an avid model railroader and shared his knowledge freely. He and his friend, Wayne Ledum, the owner of Creative Concepts Furniture, developed an extensive layout. Over the years, Harvey was active in Aircrafters, the Naval Civilian Management Association. In March of 2002, the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering recognized Harvey with a Distinguished Alumni Award. Given Harvey's strong belief in education, his daughter, Marna, established a scholarship in his name in the School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. This scholarship became a fond project of Harv and his family.
Harvey was predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Renninger. In addition to his wife of 61 years, Harvey is survived by 3 children Marna C. Whittington of Wilmington, DE and her husband Thomas D. Whittington, Marilynn C. Goebel and her husband, Paul D. Goebel of Media, PA and David E. Cupp of West Chester, PA and his wife Linda M. Cupp; a brother, David B. Cupp and Marilyn of OH; a sister Margaret C. Chandler and Leonard of Hockessin, DE. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Marna A. McDermott and husband Tom of Washington, DC and Sarah I. Whittington, of Boston, MA; and a great grand daughter Marna Delaney MCDermott.
The family of Harvey wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Kevin Fox and associates of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital (HUP) for all the years of quality life due to their treatments of his cancer since 1988.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Monday, October 23, 2006, at 11 am, in St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Second & Market Streets, Lewes, Delaware, 19958. Burial will be private.

Age 86, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully in her sleep at Stonegates on Friday, October 20, 2006.
She is predeceased by her husband, Charles H. Arrington, Jr; and her son, Charles H. Arrington, III. She is survived by her son, Roger W. Arrington, and his wife, Anne, of Wilmington; 5 granddaughters, Lisa, Katie, Lynn, Robyn, and Lauren; 1 great grandson, Wyatt; and her sister, Jean Morgan, of Carey, NC.

Daisy L. Saunders
Of Bridgeville, DE, departed this life on September 27, 2006, at the age of 89, at the Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington, DE. She was born in Winfall, NC to Grover L. and Armecia H. Perry on October 4, 1916. In 1999, she moved to Wilmington, DE with her daughter Allenzine "Lady or AZ" Joseph. She was admitted to the Milton and Hattie Kutz Home in May 2001. In times of trouble, trials and tribulations she would boldly say, "I dare you to try God!" She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Johnnie Perry; her only son, Elder Charles K. Demary, Sr.; and her devoted companion, Charlie W. King. She leaves to cherish her loving memory, 1 brother, A.J. White of Patterson, NJ; 4 daughters, Daisy Pinder and Maybelle Brewer of Bridgeville, DE, Allenzine Joseph of Wilmington, DE and son-in-law, Camitil Joseph of Gonaives, Haiti and Arletha Brown of Seaford, DE; a devoted grandson, Sean Perry of Magnolia, DE; and a spiritual son, Livingston Lee. Paul Richardson
Paul Richardson, best known as the stadium organist for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team, died on Monday, October 2, at home in Wilmington, of complications from prostate cancer.
Paul was born in Wilmington, son of Ralph and Hannah (Kehnast) Richardson, in 1932. A musician and entertainer his entire life, in addition to playing for the Phillies, Paul also did a 5 year stint at Yankee Stadium. He taught at Wilmington Music School, appeared here and in Canada as an artist for several keyboard manufacturers, and he regularly played at regional social, civic, and sports functions. Paul still lives with us through his music, which can be heard on his many CDs, which are available through www.cdbaby.com.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dee; his daughter, Susanne Salve, and her husband, James, of Oxford, PA; his daughter Victoria Richardson; and his son, Jon Paul Richardson, both of Middletown, DE, and his former wife, Susan Richardson, also of Middletown; Paul's sister, Ella Richardson Robinson, of Dover, DE; his brother, Robert, of Doylestown, PA; 2 nieces, 4 nephews; and his 3 beautiful grandchildren, Nathan, Helena, and Mason Salve also survive him.
A funeral service will be held at DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, on Sunday, October 8, at 3 pm, with visitation starting at 1 pm.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Stephen Grubbs and his staff at the Helen F. Graham Center, the Christiana Care Visiting Nurses, and Delaware Hospice, all of which would gladly receive contributions from family and friends in memory of Paul.
Mary Wallace Lavin "Molly"
Molly Lavin of Rehoboth Beach and Wilmington, DE died at Homestead Village in Lancaster, PA on Tuesday, October 3, 2006, following a life that made the world a better place.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on November 7, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Rose McLaughlin and Joseph Wallace. Her husband, William F. Lavin, died in 1989. She was a laboratory technician in the office of Lewis B. Flinn, MD in Wilmington, DE until she and Bill retired to Rehoboth Beach. There she was active in the parish of St. Edmund's Catholic Church, the Rehoboth Library and the Lewes/Rehoboth Meals on Wheels. Molly's enjoyed great literature, and music and was passionate about women's issues and politics. Learning was a lifelong passion. But her greatest love was people and for 94 years she shared her compassion, hospitality, grace, warmth, love and wisdom with all on whom her Irish eyes smiled. She was dearly loved and will be missed by countless people, acquaintances, friends and family alike.
She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and her adopted family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 9, 2006, at 1 pm at St. Edmund's Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Interment in the Epworth United Methodist cemetery, Rehoboth Beach, DE.
