Winifred J. Tucker "Winnie"

Mrs. Winifred J. "Winnie" Tucker, age 80, of Hockessin, DE, formerly of Newark, died on Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at the Christiana Hospital in Newark.

Born November 27, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY, Ms. Tucker was the daughter of the late William Tucker and Maude Whitney Tucker. She was a graduate of Columbia (SC) Bible College and taught for several years in a rural school in Chincoteague, VA. A devout Christian and Bible teacher, Mrs. Tucker taught classes at St. James Espicopal Church in Newport. She also led prayer and Bible study groups with her friend, the late Rita Meese, at Holy Angels Church and many other locations in the Newark community.

She is survived by 3 children, Randolph P. Carrion, and his wife, René, of Port Neches, TX, William W. Cocke, and his wife, Rebecca, of Newark, and Elizabeth C. Cooke, of Hockessin; 9 grandchildren; and 4 great grand-children.

Friends may call from 6-8 pm on Sunday, April 23, 2006, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 121 West Park Place, Newark. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, April 24, 2006, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in All Saints cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.

Norman J. Weinelt, Sr.

Age 75, of Selbyville, DE, formerly of Pasadena, MD, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at home. Viewing 12 noon and funeral 1 pm Sunday, April 23, at HASTINGS FUNERAL HOME, 19 S. Main St., Selbyville, DE 19975.

Mary Jane Wendle

Mrs. Mary Jane (Dempsey) Wendle, age 83, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2006, with her family around her, after a long illness.

Mrs. Wendle was born April 26, 1922 in Bangor, ME, daughter of the late John Carroll and Laura (Bolan) Dempsey. She attended Gorham Teacher's College in ME before being married to her husband, Hugh, in 1951. A homemaker, she loved gardening and cultivated many beautiful flowers. Mrs. Wendle also enjoyed knitting and made the best pie crust in the east. She was very devoted to her family and was an avid fan at her grandchildren's many sporting events. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at Linden Hill School.

Mrs. Wendle is survived by her husband of 54 years, Hugh M. Wendle; her children, Maryann Gitter, and her husband, Howard, of Springfield, PA, Betsy Keech, and her husband, Joe, of Wilmington, and H. Scott Wendle, and his wife, Carol, of Lincoln University, PA; and her grandchildren, Erin Lee, Jessica and Ben Gitter, Christopher and Kaydee Keech, and Andy, Ben and Joey Wendle. She was predeceased by her brother, John Dempsey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 4th St. & Bancroft Pkwy., Wilmington, on Tuesday evening, April 25, at 6:30. Family and friends may call at the church from 5-6:30. Interment will be held privately for her family in the Delaware Veterans' Memorial cemetery, in Bear.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mrs. Wendle's memory to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810.

Robert "Gene" Wollter

Age 62, of Milton, DE, died Apr. 20, 2006, at home. Viewing 7-9 pm Sun., Apr. 23, at SHORT F.S., 416 Federal St., Milton. Funeral 1 pm Mon., Apr. 24, at Eagles Nest Fellowship Church, 26633 Zion Church Rd., Milton.

Betty Lee Ainsworth

Betty Lee Ainsworth, born December 3, 1940, died suddenly at her home on Saturday, April 15, 2006.

Betty Lee is survived by her husband of 49 years, Elmer Ainsworth; 2 daughters, Elizabeth Bruzdzinski, and her husband, Ed, and Donna Ainsworth, and her companion, Craig Crumley; sons, Elmer Ainsworth, Jr., and his wife, Theresa, and Daniel Ainsworth; grandsons, Joseph and James Wiseman; granddaughters, Amanda, Sommer, Danielle and Samantha; 7 sisters; and 5 brothers.

A memorial service, in Betty Lee's honor, will be held at 7 pm on Monday, April 24, 2006, at the NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis St., Newport, DE, where visitation will begin at 6 pm. Burial will be private.

Laura E. Beckley

Age 95, formerly of Newark, DE, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006. A service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, April 22nd, at SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, where friends may call at 11 am.

Carl E. Beigler

Age 74 of Lewes, DE died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services will be private. Interment will be in Dasgboro Redmens Memorial cemetery, Dagsboro, DE.

Ranger Joe Bero "Papa Joe"

Age 90 of Newark, DE died peacefully on Saturday, April 15 2006, at home in Newark.

Mr. Bero was born September 14, 1915 in Big Shoulder, PA to Rachel Marta and Charles Bero, formerly of Fenyesletka, Hungary. He grew up in Chicago, IL and in May, 1943 he was drafted into the U.S. Army as a Ranger and spent his training in Spartenburg, SC. In his first combat he fought at the Battle of Anzio. He was 1 of only 6 Rangers in Company B's 1st Battalion who survived. His next mission was to take Cisterna, however he was captured by the Germans and held as a prisoner of war in Hammerstein, Germany. He received a Bronze Star, 2 Purple Hearts, Fameto Medal, World War II Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He was an instrument specialist for the DuPont Company in Glasgow, DE until his retirement in 1984. He was a charter member of National World War II Memorial Society, American Ex-Prisoners of War, Delaware Chapter #1, past president of the Glasgow Lions, lifetime member of Masonic Organization, Disabled American Veterans, as well as various other organizations.

Mr. Bero is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Rita J. Bero of Newark, DE; daughters, Kathryn L. Roderick and Bonnie J. Clements and her husband, C. Curtis, all of Newark, DE; 7 grandchildren, David J. Roderick, Kimberlyn Allen and her husband, Rick, Joel Roderick, Erick Roderick and his wife, Linda, Ryan Roderick, Michael Amici and his wife, Laurie, and Julius Amici; 10 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews, Joe Glass, Jack and Barbara Mottle, Charlene and Elwood Stade, Don Bero, Yvonne Arendt and Nancy Belvedere. He was predeceased by his brothers, Steve, Charlie and Duke Bero; sisters, Emma Meyer, Irma Glass and Jennett Ceiearotty; and nephew, Ronald Bero. All of his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren will greatly miss Papa Joe.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 24, 2006, at 11 am in Delaware Veterans cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. Friends may call on Sunday, April 23, 2006, from 6-8 pm at GEE FUNERAL HOME, 259 E. Main St., Elkton, MD 21921. Interment with military honors by American Legion Mason Dixon Post #194 of Rising Sun, MD and the World War II Rangers Association will be at Delaware Veterans cemetery, Bear, DE following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner Hospital for Children; or the National World War II Memorial Society, both in c/o Gee Funeral Home.

Helen L. Daugherty

Age 84, of Churchman Village formerly of Sheridan Square, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 18, 2006.

She was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School in Wilmington and Lasell Junior College in MA. Helen was retired from the DuPont Company and a member of Limestone Presbyterian Church where she was involved in Meals on Wheels, the garden club and the church circle.

Her husband, Alan Y. Daugherty, whom she affectionately called "A.Y." passed away in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents, H. Eugene and Alice M. Savery of Wilmington, DE; and her sister, Betty M. Greiner. Helen is survived by her daughters, Joyce L. Daugherty of Middletown, DE and Sharon L. Daugherty and her companion, Bill Fachet, of Aston, PA; her granddaughter, Melissa L. Iaquinto and her husband, Tony, of PA; 2 great granddaughters, Taylor L. and Emma L.; and 1 sister, Beverly B. Savery of Claymont, DE.

The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff at Churchman Village and Odyssey Hospice for their care and comfort.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at 11:30 am at Limestone Presbyterian Church, 3201 Limestone Road, Wilmington, where friends may call after 10:30 am. Interment will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Delaware Chapter, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.

Kevin John Deas

Kevin John Deas, age 63, of Ft. Myers, FL, suddenly died April 17, 2006 at his home.

He was born January 26, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY. Kevin was a local resident since 1994, and previously lived in the Limestone Hills section of Wilmington, DE. He was employed as a realtor by Wentworth Realty in land development.

He was an active member of Blessed Pope John XXIII Church, where he was a eucharistic minister. Kevin enjoyed reading and cooking, and had a passion for history and various trivia.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary Ann (Mac Martin) Deas; his children, Kevin G. (Maria), of Middletown, DE, Brendan J., of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Maureen A. (Michael) Luyster, of Cape Coral, FL, Patrick F. (fiancée, Ann Williams), of Wilmington, DE; and his dogs, Clancy and Rocky. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry B. and Regina Deas; and his infant son, Michael B.

A memorial mass will be celebrated today, April 21, 2006, at 11 am, at Blessed Pope John XXIII Church, 13060 Palomino Lane, Ft. Myers, FL 33912.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent in Kevin's memory to the building fund of the above named church.
