Geraldine F. “Brown” Kas,

Geraldine F. “Brown” Kas, 87, of Lewes, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Kas was born April 16, 1917 in the Village of Kenmore, Ohio to the late Ralph Brown and the late Nellie “Hall” Brown.
She enjoyed sewing and she loved slot machines where she was a frequent winner. She was a former member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion and the Elks Lodge. In Santee, Calif., Mrs. Kas and her late husband were active members of the VFW.
Mrs. Kas was preceded in death by her husband, Leo F. Kas and her son, Robert A. Hollinger, who died four days before she did. In addition, three brothers and one sister also preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Saundra K. Rapposelli and her husband Navio of Lewes; her son, Terry J. Kas and his wife Peggy of Mohave Valley, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; three brothers and three sisters.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Veterans cemetery
in Point Loma, Calif.

Baron Q. Joseph
native of Lewes
Baron Q. Joseph, 46, of Harbeson, died Monday April 25, 2005, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
He was born in Lewes, the son of the late Victor and Billie Jean (Baker) Joseph.
Baron excelled in many things in his life; if he was going to do it he was giving it his all. From his younger years in which he knew how to go out and live it up, to joining the National Guard, which truly started his way to maturity. With his eldest brother giving him advice as to how to succeed in the military life and Baron’s thirst for succeeding, he had the honor to be squad leader and class president.
Soon after returning from the guard, Baron started his career working for his father-in-law who got him started in being - in many people’s opinion - one of the best backhoe operators in Sussex County. He had the ability to dig on grade by eye, accurately and fast. In later years, he started his own backhoe business.
He had the gift of gab and to make people laugh, so if you met Baron Joseph once you were likely to remember him. He fathered two very beautiful, strong, talented, special girls, whom he loved dearly, his greatest accomplishment.
His love of deer hunting gave him many hours of enjoyment in the woods and filled his walls with mountings. He grew up with a very close family that spent many times together singing and guitar playing. From his mother. brothers and sister, to aunts and uncles and many cousins they can sing in such a way that puts tears to your eyes. He recently perfected his ability to do the same, enjoying many nights at local VFWs and American Legions, singing for a lot of new friends.
Baron is survived by his wife, May Lou (Howard) Joseph; two daughters, Billie Jean and Lisa Marie Joseph; two brothers, Scott Allan and Mark A. Joseph; a sister, Karen Smith; two stepbrothers, Morris and Mike Sockriter; in-laws, George Howard, Mary Farber, Shirley and Ned Mihm, John Howard, Kathy Rogers and her family; 10 nieces, eight nephews, five great-nieces, and eight great-nephews; two young men he thought of as his own, Marcus and Michael “J.R.” O’Neill; a very dear friend, Lois Sasada; and her son Kevin Lynch; and many other close family and friends.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 30, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road in Millsboro, where friends may call Friday evening, April 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in Harbeson cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions to American Cancer Society, Sussex County Unit, Post Office Box 163, Salisbury, MD. 21805.
Wilson Eugene “Gene” Boyles,
professional bus, truck driver
Wilson Eugene “Gene” Boyles, 78, of Long Neck and formerly of Pennsylvania, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Gene was born Oct. 24, 1928 in Richboro, Pa., the son of the late Perry and Reta Post Boyles.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Intrepid and the USS Missouri. He was a professional truck and charter bus driver for various companies for more than 55 years and was also a trainer and instructor in this field. He was a member of American Legion Post 28.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Jacquelyn M. Boyles; five children, Cheryl, Cynthia, John, Gary and Beth; a granddaughter, Melissa; and his dog, Shelby.
He will be greatly missed by his family, neighbors and friends.
Memorial services were held at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck.

J. Kermit Jackson,

J. Kermit Jackson, 78, of West Chester, Pa. and formerly of Millsboro, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Park Lane at Bellingham in West Chester.
Mr. Jackson was a self=employed carpenter as well as a union carpenter for many years, working in the Philadelphia and surrounding area.
He was born Oct. 3, 1926, in Millsboro to the late Samuel H, and Mary Morris Jackson. He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Media, Pa. and was a former member of Harmony U.M. Church in Millsboro and the Tindley Temple M.E. Church in Philadelphia, where he was a member of the choir.
He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a graduate of Delaware State University in Dover with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Also, he was a former member of the Dra Mu Opera Company in Philad3elphia.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Katherine Church Jackson; two sons, James Kermit Jackson of Media, Pa. and Quentin Winfield Jackson of Phoenixville, Pa.; two daughters, Karen J. White, MD of Mullica Hill, N.J. and Gwendolyn Hope Jackson of Philadelphia; a brother, S. Herman Jackson of Millsboro; a sister, Arrie J. Harrison of Millsboro; five grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by brothers Preston and Hersel Jackson and a sister, Helen J. Harmon.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 1, at the Harmony YU.M. Church, Route 24, east of Millsboro, where friends may call at 1 p.m. The Rev. Claudia Waters will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Harvey L. Berry,
repair business owner
Harvey L. Berry, 84, of Lewes, died Friday, April 15, 2005.
Mr. Berry was born June 9, 1920, and raised in Port Norris, N.J., where his family owned and operated an oyster business. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and settled in Philadelphia after the war.
Mr. Berry worked as a garage foreman at the “Philadelphia Inquirer” before moving to Delaware in 1961, where he established his own small engine repair business in the Oak Orchard Angola area.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Jeanette Berry, I 1996.
He is survived by a daughter, Joyce Ann Lafferty of Rehoboth Beach; a granddaughter, Donna Ray Berry of New Bern, N.C.; a grandson, Michael William Lafferty of Rehoboth Beach; two great-grandchildren; five brothers, Herman Berry Sr., Harold Hickman, Glendon Berry, Don Berry Sr. and Phil Berry; a sister, Janet Faye Hickman; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was loved by all and had many “adopted kids and grandkids” who cared for him and will miss him greatly.
Memorial services will be at noon, Friday, April 29, in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road. Burial will be private.

Eva Amelia Norwood,

Eva Amelia Norwood, 91, of Lewes, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at home.
Mrs. Norwood was born Dec. 5, 1913, in Lewes, to the late James E. and Emma Dell Morris.
Mrs. Norwood was a homemaker and a domestic worker, serving many families in the area. She was the oldest surviving charter member of Israel United Methodist Church in Lewes, the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 10638 in Millsboro and a member of Cape Henlopen Senior Center in Rehoboth Beach.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Elwood “Duck” Norwood.
She is survived by a son, Tomas E. Norwood of Lewes; four daughters, Deborah Y. Norwood and Marian E. Norwood, both of Dover, Trudy N. Jackson of Millsboro and Betty J. Streett and her husband, William, of Milton; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, May 2, at Israel United Methodist Church near Lewes, where friends may call at 11 a.m. Friends ,ay also call at the church from 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, May 1. Pastor Thomas Johnson will officiate.
Burial will be in Israel Church cemetery.

Reed Van Petten,
owned Surfside Arcade
Reed Van Petten, 93, died Feb. 25, 2005, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
He was born in Chicago, Ill., where he met and married his wife, Mary, who preceded him in death.
He was a World War II veteran serving in South Pacific. He started his career in the coin machine business after the war in 1948 at the Toronto Exhibition in Canada. He moved to Virginia Beach, Va., from 1957 to 1977 and opened an arcade at Seaside Amusement Park.
Since 1977, he was the owner and operator of Surfside Arcade located at Delaware Avenue and the Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach. The business is still maintained by Russell Van Petten and William McClure.
He is survived by his only son, Russell, and daughter-in-law Lilly Van Petten of Jensen Beach, Fla.
A memorial celebration will be Wednesday, May 4. The family suggests sharing stories and memories of personal experiences with Reed. Friends may call or contact Russell at 227-8207
Goldia Simpler Maloney,
former Rehoboth resident
Goldia Simpler Maloney, 87, died Saturday, April 16, 2005, in Petaluma, Calif.
She was born in 1947 in Rehoboth, daughter of Joseph Roland Simpler and Amanda Downing Simpler. She graduated from Rehoboth High School and married James S. Maloney of Georgetown in 1938 and moved to Wilmington where they lived for many years. After retiring, they moved back to Rehoboth Beach and then to Bonita Springs, Fla. Following her husband’s death, she moved to Sonoma County, Calif., in 2000. She loved her home and family and especially enjoyed the friends she made in Florida.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Kay of Petaluma; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Pam of Alamo, Calif.; a granddaughter and her husband, Caryn and Mark; and great-grandsons Anthony and Brendan, all of Sacramento; a brother and sister-in-law, J. Raymond and Irene of Rehoboth; her brothers-in-law Raymond E. Wilson and Ralph DeLoy, both of Rehoboth; and many nieces and nephews.
At her request, no services were held. Contributions are suggested to animal welfare organizations or hospices in her memory.
Anthony R. Pasukonis,
retired carpenter
Anthony Robert Pasukonis, 81, of Lewes, died suddenly Monday, April 18, 2005, at White Clay Creek, near Wilmington, while trout fishing.
He was born July 25, 1923, in Garwood, N.J., to the late Anthony and Petronella “Yaunch” Pasukonis, both formerly of Garwood, via Lithuania.
Anthony worked his entire life as a carpenter in the home building industry. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He was a veteran of World War II, in which he served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 as an aviation metalsmith first class.
He is survived by his wife, Florence E. Vorndran Pasukonis, to whom he was married for 56 years; a son, John, and his wife, Miri, of Rumson, N.J.; a daughter, Patricia, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and four granddaughters, Nicole of Rumson, Mich., and Kathleen, Colleen and Angelique of Grand Rapids, Mich.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 14, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. Pastor Randy Booth will officiate.
The family suggests donations be made to a charity of choice.
Adelaide F. Heckman,
devoted church member
Adelaide “Nana” Francis Heckman, 97, of Middletown, passed peacefully on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at the Silver Lake Center in Dover.
Mrs. Heckman was born and raised at The Liston’s of Taylors Bridge, was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church and also attended the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Middletown. She was the oldest living member of Bethesda, and was referred to as the icon of the church by the Rev. Isabel Gardner.
Her husband, Ira A. Heckman, preceded her in death in 1983. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth S. Sheats of Lewes; three grandsons, Leland Sheats of Clayton, Law J. Sheats and his wife, Katie, of Millville and Julian J. “Chip” Sheats and his wife, Joanna, of Warwick, Md.; and seven great grandchildren, Zachary, Daniel, Lauren, Michael, Calley, Morgan and Savannah.
The funeral service was April 23, at the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Middletown. Interment was be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Bethesda United Methodist Church, 116 E. Main St., Middletown, DE 19709.
