Swain, John "Jack" W.

John 'Jack' W. Swain, 82 HARRINGTON - John "Jack" W. Swain, of Harrington, died Sunday, May 30, 2010, at DE Hospice Center, Milford with his daughters by his side. He was 82.

Jack was born in Harrington to the late George W. and Dorothy May Derrickson Swain. He attended Harrington Elem. and Dover High School. During WW II he served in the US Navy on USS Lejeune where he received a Victory Medal. The USS Lejeune held German war prisoners in France. After the war he worked for Penn Central RR for 41 years as an maintainer-electrician.

He was a member of American Legion CKRT 7 of Harrington and Harrington Moose Lodge #534.

Jack loved to go fishing. He played Triple A baseball for the Baltimore Orioles as a centerfielder.

He was a stubborn and mischievous man who liked to have a good laugh.

He is survived by a son, John M. Swain of Smyrna; two daughters, Deborah M. Coates of New Orleans, La., and Victoria M. Miller of Falls Church, Va.; two sisters, Sara S. Mills of Smyrna, and Bonnia S. Ewing of Temecula, Calif.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his good friend of 25 years, Charlotte Wooten; and former wife and mother of his children Dolores Swain of Harrington.

Funeral services will be noon, Thursday, June 3, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, where friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes.

Donations can be made to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington.

Blackburn, Nancy E.

Nancy E. Blackburn, 41 MILFORD - Nancy E. Blackburn, of Milford, died Monday, March 22, 2010, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. She was 41.

She was born in Salisbury, Md., to Edward Albert Darling of Harrington and Helen J. Darling of Georgetown.

Mrs. Blackburn worked as a receptionist for Avenue Medical of Dover. In her spare time, she enjoyed making crafts, sewing, and final word puzzles. She was a loving, compassionate and devoted wife and mother who lived for her family and took great care of them. She enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them.

In addition to parents, she is survived by her loving husband of 23 years, Robert T. Blackburn Jr. of Milford; son, Brandon Blackburn of Frederica; daughter, Kimberlie Blackburn of Milford; brother, Thomas Darling of Hawaii; and stepsisters, Carey Dover of Harrington, Florence Sharp of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Donna Rothenberg of Abington, Md.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, March 27, at South Bowers Volunteer Fire Company, 57 Scotts Corner Road, Milford.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Yoder, Ivan P

HARRINGTON - Ivan P. Yoder, of Harrington, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital. He was 84. He was the son of the late Abraham and Ida Bell Yoder.

For over 60 years, Mr. Yoder was a harness racing driver and trainer, starting in 1949 and finally retiring December of 2009. Out of 38 years of driving, he had only five accidents. He raced all over the Eastern Shore and won many races.

Mr. Yoder was indeed a man of many talents. Besides working with horses, he also was an electrician and carpenter, building many houses.

Mr. Yoder had a great sense of humor. He loved to joke and kid with people and tell tales. He never knew a stranger and knew everyone in the Whiteleysburg area. He loved to play his guitar for the family's blue grass and country band, and looked forward to the weekends when he could play his music. Hunting and fishing were also a favorite activity of his.

Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, and they will sorely miss him.

Mr. Yoder belonged to the USTA -United States Trotters Assoc., VFW Greensboro Post 7937, and to the Blue Grass Assoc. of Marydel.

He is survived by the love of his life, Bernice Laramore of Greensboro, Md.; sons and daughters- in law, Jerry L. and Sharon Yoder of Palm Coast, Fla., and Eddie L. and Lou Ann Yoder of Bridgeville; daughter and son-in law, Velma J. and David Rust of Harrington; brother, Earl Yoder of Harrington; sister, Garnet Spencer of Hartly; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great, great-grandchildren.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE 19952. Visitation will be one and a half hours prior to the service. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Papavasiliou, Theofilos

LINCOLN - Theofilos Papavasiliou, of Lincoln, died Monday, August 16, 2010, in the Hospice Center of Milford. He was 67.

He was born in Ioannina, Greece, he was the son of the late Christos and Aristea Papavasiliou.

Mr. Papavasiliou was a street vendor in New York for over 15 years. He loved to play backgammon and going to the slots. His grandchildren were his life, and he enjoyed getting together with his family whenever possible for a good time.

He was a man of his word and loved to help people. He would give you the shirt off of his back. He will be remembered as a very caring and compassionate person who will be missed by his family and friends.

Mr. Papavasiliou is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Irini Papavasiliou, of Greenwood; daughters, Aristea "Tia" Ampatzidis, of Greenwood, Sofia Hill, of Lincoln; brothers, Nick and James Papavasiliou, of Greece; sister, Mahi Papavasiliou, of Greece; and grandchildren, Olivia and Zoi Hill, of Lincoln.

Services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Szymanski, Erica F.

Erica F. Szymanski, 39, of Newark, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at her home surrounded by her family.

Erica worked for the last seventeen years at Corporation Trust, most recently as a corporate staffing specialist. She was predeceased by her brother, Dennis Petrucci.

She will be dearly missed by her husband, Dennis, her three children; Christopher, Tyler, and Brenna, her parents, James and Nancy Gland, her sister, Lisa Kirk, her brother, Jesse Gland, and her best friend, Bobbie Devane.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Wednesday, April 7, at 11:00 AM at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Rds., Wilmington. Calling hours will be after 10:00 Am at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720

Lenda Rostom

Beloved mother and daughter in Christ, Lenda Rostom, age 88 passed away on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010.

Mrs. Rostom, before she became ill, enjoyed to read, attend church functions, and family gatherings.

Mrs. Rostom was the mother of Moneb Eskandar and Madlen Michael. Mrs. Rostom is also survived by her daughter in law: Mona Eskandar, late son in law: Malak Michael, cousin: Adel Rostom and his spouse Samia, grandchildren: Ehab, Heba, Sam, Peter, Kathy and their spouses Natosha, Jim, Kathy, Anisa, and Amir, and great grand children: Jesse, Oliver, Gabriel, Mikayla, Matthew, Emily, Ainsley, Christian, extended family: Safwat, Nagat, Narges, Samira, Monir, Magdi, Medhat Mikhail, Atef, Ashraf, George, Hany Mikhail, Gehan, Ramy, Joseph, Louris, Sally, their spouses Soria, Soheir, Irene, Magda, Gehan, Inas, Susan, Magdi, Carol, Emad and their children.

A church service will be offered at 12 P.M. at Saint Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church 280 Frenchtown Road, Elkton, MD 21921. The burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church building fund sent to PO Box 1429 Bear Delaware 19701.

Sevearn J. Struyk "Bud"

Age 85, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010 at Manor Care surrounded by his family.

Born in Hampton, VA, Mr. Struyk was the son of the late Gus and Lillie (Lewis) Struyk. For 25 years and seven months, he served his country proudly in the US Army, retiring as Sergeant First Class. He fought in three wars, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and received wounds at the Battle of the Bulge. He earned two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and a good Conduct Medal. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Gertrude Jester and Mary Campbell.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Ruth J. (Bryan) Struyk; his daughters, Susan S. Kowalski and her husband, Edward F., Kathleen D. Warner and Cynthia M. Struyk; five grandchildren, Edward C., Natalie M., Ryan, Michael and Bronwyn; and his pet cats, Tag and Tom.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 8th at 2 PM at Holy Angels Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark where friends are invited to visitation after 1 PM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the HCR Manor Care c/o Arcadia Unit, 5651 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 or the Alzheimers Association, 100 S. Main Street, #211, Smyrna, DE 19977.
