Mabel D. Stevenson Wollter

Of Milford, passed away Friday, January 21, 2011 at Courtland Manor in Dover. She was 92.

Mabel was born on October 8, 1918 in Milford, daughter of the late Albert and Della (Millman) Donovan.

She was employed as an inspector for Milford Stitching in Milford for 25 years before retiring in 1982.

Mrs. Wollter enjoyed the simple pleasures of homemaking and time spent with her family. She also cherished the special bond of friendship over many years and activities she had shared with her late nephew, Larry Donovan.

She was a member of the Lincoln United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Stevenson in 1954.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law; William E. and Carol Stevenson and Dolphus I. and Nancy Stevenson, all of Milford; a brother, Cecil Donovan of Lincoln; three sisters, Betty Jean Jarrell of Wilmington, Alberta Maneval and Wanda Rash, both of Milford; five grandchildren, Richard J. Stevenson, Scott R. Stevenson, Matthew E. Stevenson, Todd W. Stevenson and Heather L. Stevenson and seven great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Union St, Milton.

Burial will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Milford Chess Club, c/o Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St, Milford, DE, 19963.

Yatzus, Tamara

Tamara (Laktionov) Yatzus, age 84, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully at Wilmington Hospital on Sunday, December 19, 2004.

Mrs. Yatzus was a chemist for Atlas Chemical/ICI Americas for 25 years before her retirement in 1984. Born in the Ukraine, she came to the United States in 1950. She was a graduate of Heidelberg University and a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. Her husband, Stephen Yatzus, predeceased her in 1987.

Mrs. Yatzus is survived by her son, Andrew N. Yatzus and his wife, Victoria of Newark, her daughter, Olga A. Yatzus of Newport, and six grandchildren, Kristopher, Matthew, Katherine, Alyssa, Erin and Haley. Also surviving are two cousins, Dr. Alexandra Lubizka of Philadelphia, and Nelly Greenbus of the Ukraine.

Mrs. Yatzus will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends for her strength, devotion and generosity.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 22nd at 10 AM at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church, 800 Lea Blvd., Wilmington. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church, 800 Lea Blvd., Wilmington, DE 19802.

Abate, James A.

James A. Abate, age 73, of Pike Creek passed away at home on Saturday, January 24, 2004.

Mr. Abate owned and operated a carpet installation company.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Florence Y. Abate; their children, Jodi Sweeney and her husband, Brian, of Wilmington, Lori Talmadge and her husband, Todd of Belleville, NJ; grandchildren, Mitchell, TediMarie, Todd Scott, Jr.; and sister, Tina Abate of FL.

A funeral ceremony will be held Friday, January 30, 2004 at 11 am at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 531 Delaware St., New Castle, DE. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning from 10-11 am. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

Hofmann, Raymond W

Raymond W. Hofmann, 92 ½ of Wilmington and Bethany Beach passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at his home in Bethany Beach, with his wife at his side.

Ray was the son of the late Alice (Ittem) and Max Hofmann, born, raised and educated in New York. He was a graduate of New York University and was trained in business finance and for the majority of his career he engaged in the organization and management of investment companies.

Relocating to Wilmington, DE in 1966, he was instrumental in the organization and administration of the Sigma Group of Investment Companies. At the time of his retirement in 1989, he was the Executive Vice President and Secretary of Sigma American Corporation, a financial services holding company and Sigma Management, Inc., an investment management company. Ray held the same positions in each of the various Sigma Funds.

A veteran of World War II, he was an officer in the Army Medical Administrative Corps from 1943 to 1946, serving in the South Pacific and attaining the rank of Captain. In addition to his parents, Ray was predeceased by his first wife, Polly in 1970, his infant son, Christopher in 1956 and his brother, Arthur.

Ray is survived by his wife of 37 ½ years, Suzanne (Eastburn) Hofmann; his sons and their wives, Raymond W., Jr. (Tori), Michael P. (Betty Anne) and William C. (Laurel); his daughter and her husband, Elisabeth J. Wensley (Nigel); his grandchildren, Timothy, Gregory, Alex, Cameron, Kristen, Victoria and Katherine; his great grandson, Henry; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Woody and Beverle Eastburn, Mary and Bill May, Joe and Margaret Eastburn, Dave and Joyce Eastburn, Sally and Wayne Shorey, Gladys and John McWilliams and Kathy Eastburn; his devoted 12 nieces and nephews and 11 very special great nieces and nephews and their extended families.

Ray's family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Delaware Hospice in Milford. The very kind and caring staff was wonderful - providing excellent treatment and friendship.

Friends may call at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, Limestone and Milltown Roads on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 PM and funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning at 11:30 AM. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either, Ronald McDonald House, 1901 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803 or Ministry of Caring, 506 N. Church Street, Wilmington, DE 19801

Zabenko, Alex

Alex Zabenko (Sasha), of Newark, DE, age 76, joined the church Triumphant on November 6, 2002, at Christiana Hospital, as a result of congestive heart failure and end-stage renal disease. He was born on March 4, 1926, to the late Leonty and Theodosia Zabenko of Marshallton, DE.

He attended Stanton Middle School and was a member of the class of 1945 and 1947 at Newark High School. In May of 1944, he enlisted in the Army and served two years in the Pacific Theater (RYUKYUS) in the 67th Chemical Smoke Generator Co. (Camouflage). After his discharge in May of 1946, he continued his education at Newark High School and the University of Delaware (class of 1952).

He worked as a service representative for New Holland Machine Company for 5 southern states. After being employed briefly by Eastern States, Southern States and the New Castle County Board of Health as an inspector, he retired from Sears, Roebuck & Company after 29 years in sales. He was an active member of Newark United Methodist Church; he taught sixth grade Sunday School for several years and was Cubmaster for Scout Troop #955 for 3 years. He belonged to the Newark Deltones as a member of the SPEBSQSA for 17 years and was president of the W.E. Shue School P.T.A. from 1970 - 1971. He was president of the Wilmington Sears Retirees Club (the only one in Delaware) for 6 years up to the present. He often did volunteer maintenance work at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel (Weaver) Zabenko, having celebrated their 50th anniversary September 20, 2002; their daughter, Diane Marie Zabenko of Newark, DE; son, Major Robert T. Zabenko (D.O.) of Fayetteville, NC and Leesville, LA and his wife, Tammy; plus three grandchildren, Tara Marie Zabenko, and twins Tracy Lynn Zabenko and Tristan Anne Zabenko. He is also survived by his brother, Leon Zabenko and his wife, Cornelia of Decatur, GA; his sister, Elizabeth Moore and her husband, Harold of Prairieville, LA; and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Y. Zabenco of Louisville, KY; and his sister-in-law, Sandra Zabenko of Brookside, NJ, as well as, several nieces and nephews.

Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Mon., Nov. 11, 2002 at Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main Street, Newark, DE where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be at Newark Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wesley Foundation or the Newark United Methodist Church c/o R. T. FOARD AND JONES FUNERAL HOME, 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711.

Quillen, George R. "Bobby"

Representative George Robert "Bobby" Quillen, of Harrington, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 18, 2004, he was 75. Mr. Quillen was born in Ocean View, DE to the late Robert H. and Cora M. Quillen.

Representative George Robert "Bobby" Quillen, R-Harrington, ended his career July 1, 2004 after serving more then 28 years as a Delaware Representative. Rep. Quillen served three terms from 1966-72, then retired. He returned to Legislative Hall in 1982 after then Governor Pierre S. du Pont IV asked him to run again. He mentored younger lawmakers and knew the intricacies of the legislative process, and was considered an expert in House rules and procedures. Rep. Quillen earned a reputation for his good humor, quick wit, warm charm, and his habit of not wearing socks. He will always be remembered for his "Never Better" reply when asked how he was doing. No matter what, you could always count on his "Never Better" attitude to brighten your own day. Rep. Quillen knew how to serve the people that God brought into his life. His pastor knew him as a man of faith and as a servant of God.

As a state representative, Rep. Quillen was a leader in environmental and agricultural issues. He chaired the House Natural Resource Committee and Environmental Management Committee and was vice-chairman of the Land Use and Infrastructure Committee. In his 28 years as Delaware's Representative, Rep. Quillen was instrumental in numerous bills and legislative activities. Rep. Quillen was fond of his beloved Harrington. He served his community proudly and was a strong supporter to many organizations in Harrington and the surrounding communities, especially Farmington and Houston. He was always available to his constituents and was always eager to lend an ear and a hand.

Rep. Quillen worshiped for over 50 years at the St. Stephens Episcopal Church of Harrington. He belonged and was very active with the American Legion CKRT #7 of Harrington and served as the Service Officer, and at one time was Post Commander and Past President. He served his country proudly in the Korean Conflict from 1950 through 1952 in the US Army Medical Corp as a company clerk, and was stationed in Germany. Rep. Quillen was a longtime supporter of the 4-H Club. He helped the 4-Hers during fair time, at organized functions, and during fundraisers. Rep. Quillen was an ardent supporter of the Delaware State Fair, and served on the Delaware State Fair Board of Directors and has an arena named after him at the fairgrounds. He also belonged to the Harrington Raceway Board of Directors and was very active in the horse racing industry. The Delaware State Fair and the Harrington Raceway were long loves of Rep. Quillen. He belonged to the Harrington Historical Society, and recently donated his desk from the Delaware House to their museum. He was a member of the Friends of the Harrington Library. Rep. Quillen was a Civil War Buff. He belonged to the Civil War Preservation Trust, and the Delaware Civil War Roundtable. Rep. Quillen was an honorary member of the Harrington and Houston Volunteer Fire Co., and was a member of the Eastern Shore Fox Hunters.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers H. Hayward and Harry D. Quillen.

He is survived by a sister Grace Wanda Quillen of Harrington, brothers Ivan Francis Quillen of Harrington, and Frank Quillen of Felton, a good friend who was like a son Acie Sanders of Rehoboth, and several nieces and nephews Inga Emerson, Renee Knox, Thea K. Quillen, Chad Emerson, Theo Knox, August Knox, Haley Knox.

Services will be Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at the St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Raughley Hill Road, Harrington, at 10:30 AM, with the Reverend John Desaulniers officiating.

A visitation will be held Tuesday evening, September 21, 2004, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, from 6 to 9 PM. Interment will be private at Gracelawn Cemetery, Wilmington at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family strongly suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, Suite 205, New Castle 19720; or the G. Robert "Bobby" Quillen Scholarship Fund c/o the Harrington Alumni Assoc., PO Box 37, Harrington, DE, 19952; or to the American Legion CKRT #7, 16680 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE 19952.
