Perrine, Mildred S.

Mildred S. Perrine of Clayton, Delaware died peacefully in her home on Wednesday April 21, 2010.

She was 94.

Mrs. Perrine was born March 14, 1916 in Three Bridges, NJ the daughter of the late John Saums and Sophie Kugler.

She worked on the family farm for most of her life, where she enjoyed growing various vegetables and plants and tending to her goats and livestock.

Mrs. Perrine was a member of the Smyrna First Presbyterian Church and was a very active community person. She was an active participant during the founding of the Mamie Warren Senior Center in Clayton, she was also a founding member of the Delaware Dairy Goat Association, and was a member of the Delaware Farm Bureau. Millie was an active club leader with 4-H in New Jersey and Delaware.

Mildred loved being involved with her animals and gardening and was known to love all living things.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Perrine in 1985; and her daughter, Susan P. Homan in 2004.

She is survived by her son, David H. Perrine of Nashville, TN; two daughters, Patricia J. Perrine of York, PA and Lynn P. Manus and her husband Andrew of Clayton; a son-in-law, Frank Homan; and 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving care that she received by her private caregivers, Vashti Jones and Mae Chase; as well as Delaware Hospice staff members Kat Kennedy and Margaret Aro.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 26, 2010 at 11am in the Faries Funeral Chapel of 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware. Funeral services will begin at noon.

Burial will be held privately in Dutch Reform Church in Three Bridges New Jersey.

In Lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice 911 S. DuPont Highway Dover, DE 19904, or to the Delaware 4-H Foundation 113 Townsend Hall 531 S. College Ave. Newark, DE 19716.

Walker, Charles W. "Bill"

Air Force

Charles W. "Bill" Walker of Marydel, Maryland passed away at home on Wednesday June 2, 2010.

He was 82.

A native of Beryl, West Virginia, he was the son of the late James G. Walker and Harriet "Hattie" Harsh Walker.

He was a decorated veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His distinguished military career began at age 16 with the Submarine Service. Bill's military career ended when he retired 32 years later from the United States Air Force.

He also retired from the Chrysler Corporation.

He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, the American Legion Post 2 of Dover, DE, and the Submarine Veterans Mid Atlantic Base. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7937 of Greensboro, MD and a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 648 of Silver Spring, MD.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Louise Watson Walker in 1999.

Surviving is one daughter, Maxine F. Foster-Cunningham; two sons, James W. Walker and Charles A. Walker; one brother; 4 sisters; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Monday, June 7, 2010 from 7-8 pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel of 29 South Main Street, Smyrna, Delaware. Funeral services followed by burial will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at 11 am in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery located at 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, Delaware.

Ross, Sarah P.

Sarah P. Ross of Smyrna, Delaware passed away peacefully Monday July 19, 2010 in Bayhealth/Kent General Hospital surrounded by her family.

She was 98.

Mrs. Ross was born May 3, 1912 in Smyrna, the daughter of the late Arthur and Sarah Price Bennett.

Mrs. Ross and her husband were lifelong farmers on their farm near Smyrna and she was a Class of 1930 graduate of Smyrna High School.

She enjoyed cooking and delivering meals for her elderly friends.

Mrs. Ross was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, J. Homer Ross, Sr.; a brother, Joe Bennett and two sisters, Mary Durney and Elizabeth Virdin and a son-in-law, Ray E. Calloway.

Mrs. Ross is survived by a son, James H. Ross, Jr. and his wife, Betty of Sebring, FL; three daughters, Shirley Halfen and her husband, John of Dover, DE, Barbara Calloway of Houston, DE and Frances R. Gingerich and her husband Enos of Smyrna; three grandchildren, William Robinson, Dawn Coverdale and Rick Legar and seven great grandchildren, Amber and Brian Robinson, Jacob and Garrett Coverdale and Ivy, Autumn and Jade Legar.

Services will be Saturday July 24, 2010 at 12 noon in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, DE where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, DE.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Smyrna, 118 West Commerce Street Smyrna, DE 19977 or to Citizens Hose Company #1, PO Box 97 Smyrna, DE 19977.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors and Crematorium Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, DE.

Newnum, Betty L.

Betty L. Newnum of Pearce, Arizona, formerly of Smyrna, Delaware passed away Thursday July 15, 2010.

She was 81.

Mrs. Newnum was born July 1, 1929 in Dover, DE the daughter of the late Andrew Patterson, Sr. and Nora Bradley Patterson.

She worked as a nurses aide for the State of Delaware at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill in Smyrna for several years before retiring in 1986.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis G. Newnum, Sr. and a daughter, Nora Newnum.

Mrs. Newnum is survived by three sons, Curtis G. Newnum, Jr. of Tierra Verde, FL, Blain Newnum of Smyrna and Randy Newnum, Sr. of Cochise, AZ; a brother, Alan Patterson of Woodside, DE; six grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Friday July 23, 2010 at 10am in Glenwood Cemetery Smyrna, DE.

Friends may call Friday from 9 to 9:45am in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, DE 19977.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors and Crematorium Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, DE.

Ennis, Joseph Manfred

Army

Joseph Manfred Ennis of Hockessin, Delaware, formerly of Smyrna, Delaware passed away on Friday June 18, 2010 at Cokesbury Village Health Care in Hockessin.

He was 86.

Mr. Ennis was born February 25, 1924 in Wilmington, Delaware the son of the late Joseph Whitaker Ennis and Jane Sillman Kulp.

He served honorably in the United States Army during World War II.

He worked in the business office of the University of Delaware for 45 years before retiring as an assistant registrar.

Services will be Tuesday June 22, 2010 at 11am in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Asbury United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 330, Smyrna, DE 19977.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna, Delaware.
