Beverly Ann Fry,

Beverly Ann Fry, 76 of Lewes, passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2004 at home.
Born in Centralia, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late William and Rose Irene (Goostree) Brooks. Mrs. Fry had been employed by the state of Delaware as a mediator in the Family Court system. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes. She loved politics and adored and enjoyed her cat Harry.
Mrs. Fry was preceded by her husband, Kenneth E. Fry, in May 2001.
She is survived by a daughter, Katherine Turker of Washington, D.C.
Special thanks are extended to Compassionate Care Hospice and her caregivers Tamara Davenport, Phicilla Perry, June Grant and Laura White.

Susan Kay LaPorte,
Claymont native
Susan Kay LaPorte, 54, of Fredericksburg, Va., and formerly of Claymont, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mrs. LaPorte is survived by her husband, Ron LaPorte; two sons, Chad Brown and Todd Brown, both of Fredericksburg; her parents, Chandler and Louise Davies of Lewes; two brothers, Robert Davies of Illinois and John Davies of Delaware; a sister, Diane Greenberg of Georgetown; and several grandchildren.
Services were held at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with burial private.
Fred Cannon Jr.,
Southern States retiree
Fred Cannon Jr., 77, of Bridgeville, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Harbor Healthcare Center, Lewes.
Mr. Cannon attended Richard Allen School in Georgetown. He retired from the Southern States Feed Mill in Seaford in 1986. He was a loving husband and a great father and loved to sing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Cannon Sr. and Lena Harmon of Georgetown; four brothers; a sister; and a daughter.
He is survived by his lovely wife of 55 years, Lizzie Mae Mann Cannon of Bridgeville; seven sons, Richard, Charles, Maurice and Fred III , all of Bridgeville, Douglas Cannon of Milton, Paul Cannon of Lehigh, Fla., and Danny Kane of Seaford; six daughters, Mary, Nancy, Theresa and Georgianna Cannon, and Barbara Dredden, all of Bridgeville, and Algelance Benson of Milford; a sister, Marie Melvin of Georgetown; two sons-in-law, James Dredden of Bridgeville and Harry Benson of Milford; two daughters-in-law, Diane Cannon of Milton and Gwen Cannon of Georgetown; seven sisters-in-law, Margaret Gibbs, Ruth Neal, Cora Mann and Martha Selby, all of Georgetown, Lettie Mann, Helen Howard and Eva Shelton, all of Engelhard, N.C.; five brothers-in-law, James Melvin of Georgetown, Carl Lee Mann, Charles Mann and Willie Mann, all of Engelhard; 42 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Greater Faith Temple Church of God in Christ, Bridgeville, with burial in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Millsboro. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.
Winifred D. Rhoads,

Winifred “Winnie” D. Rhoads, 59, of Wilmington, died suddenly Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004.
Winnie attended St. Ann’s School, graduated from Ursuline Academy and was currently working for Wilmington Trust Co. at the Union Street Branch where she had been employed for many years. She took great pride in helping many banking customers personally and professionally.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Manus and Winifred Duffy; she is survived by her husband of 37 years, Kenneth C. Rhoads Sr.; her sons, Kenneth C. “K.C.” Rhoads Jr. and his fiancé, Jackie Maguire, Sean P. Rhoads and Timothy S. Rhoads, all of Wilmington; her brothers, Martin F. Duffy and his wife Nancy of Rehoboth Beach, John P. Duffy and his wife Geraldine of Freehold, N.J., Manus C. Duffy and Judy Ackerman, all of Wilmington; her sister, Mary Josephine Maucher of Reston, Va.; her granddaughter, Abigail Rhoads of Wilmington; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ann’s Church, Gilpin and N. Union streets, north Wilmington, at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 29. Burial will be private in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Bear. Friends may call at Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Ave., Bear, from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Bobbie Lea Abbott,

Bobbie Lea Abbott, 53, of Georgetown, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Beebe Medical Center.
Mrs. Abbott was born in Star, Md., to the late Frederick J. and Elizabeth Bennett Weiss and had been a resident of Georgetown for more than 30 years. She most recently worked in the aircraft industry with her husband. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and daughter-in-law and will be greatly missed by her family and all whom she touched. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Fred J. Weiss; and two sisters, Jeannette R. Orgaino and Elizabeth Virginian “Betty” Weiss.
She is survived by her loving and friend and husband of 30 years, Gerald Lee Abbott; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Michelle Abbott of Georgetown; a daughter and son-in-law,, Christel and Lance Folke of Millsboro; three grandchildren, Brandon Abbott, Lauren Abbott and Paige Folke; two sisters, Joan G. Norris of Rising Sun and Nancy L. Martin of Hartly; a brother, George T. Weiss Sr. of Harrington; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Millsboro.
Flowers are accepted and a celebration of Bobbie’s life will be held at the Georgetown Fire Department, South Bedford Street, immediately following the services.092404
John E. 'Jack' Ingram

John E. "Jack" Ingram Jr., 60, of Oxford, Md., died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at his home.
At his bedside were his wife of 37 years, Pat; his son John of Virginia Beach, Va.; and his daughter Kristin and son-in-law Ryan McNavage of Bethesda, Md. He is also survived by his sister Gail Guerra of Annapolis, Md. Jack was better known as "Poppy" to his grandchildren Lindsay and Grant McNavage.
Jack held a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Duke University and masters degree in international relations from the University of Southern California. Jack served as a captain in the United States Air Force Space and Missile Systems Organization. His business career was with Pacific Telephone, AT&T, and finally Lucent Technologies as their Executive Compensation and Benefits director.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26, at Bethel Methodist cemetery
in Lewes.

Raymond W. Brown Sr.,

Raymond W. Brown Sr., 64, of Ellendale and formerly of Milton, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md..
Mr. Brown was born in Harbeson to the late Knoulton Brown Sr. and Mary Sherman Brown. He lived most of his life in Milton until moving to Ellendale five years ago.
He retired several years ago as a mechanic from Brown’s Mobil Station in Georgetown, a business he owned and operated with his brothers. Mr. Brown enjoyed woodworking, gardening and was always willing to assist his family and friends with any project they were working on or when repair was needed.
Several years ago he was involved with dirt track racing at the Delaware International Speedway in Delmar. He enjoyed watching the races and assisted with the Mark Byram 55 Late Model. He was also a NASCAR fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Leona B. Jones and Diana Bradley Holloway; and a brother, Knoulton “Junio” Brown Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia Beideman Brown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond Jr. and Lin Brown of Georgetown, and Wayne Sr. and Terry Brown of Milton; a daughter, Rhonda Brown of North Port, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Gregory Pianka Jr. and Kyle Pianka, both of Ellendale, Kurt Pianka of Janesville, Wis., Raymond Brown III of Milton, Desiree Moore of Lewes, Rayna Brown of Georgetown and Wayne Brown Jr. of Milton; two great-grandchildren, Kayla Brown of Millsboro and Raylin Moore of Lewes; three brothers, William Sherman, Richard M. Brown and George G. Brown, all of Milton; two sisters, Brenda L. Gooner and Debbie West, both of Milton; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24, at Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.

Frank N. Barton, 63, of Rehoboth Beach, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at home after a long illness.
Mr. Barton was born in Glen Ridge, N.J., the eldest son of Alice Barton of Rehoboth Beach and the late Frank Barton of Millsboro. He was a retired insulation contractor.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sheila Vasseur.
Besides his mother, he is survived by three brothers, Dennis of Frankford, Christopher of Ann Arbor, Mich. and Thomas of Columbia, Md.; two nieces, Shannon Barton of Troy, N.Y., and Jane Tan and her husband Murat and their three children, Jeremy, Tim and Sarah Pringle of Barnegat, N.J. He will be missed by his friends Marty Pratt, Katie Byam, Ann and Jack Brennan, Amanda Kollock, Sheila Karr, Richard Sackett and Pat Nicholson.

Walter ‘Buddy’ Bosman,
Navy veteran
Walter C. “Buddy” Bosman, 65, of Wilmington, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, after a long illness.
Mr. Bosman was a Navy veteran and a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagle, AERIE 3737 in Wilmington. He enjoyed fishing and loved animals, especially his cats, Rascal and Tom.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ginny Bosman, in 1972. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Nancy E. Bosman; his former wife and mother of his children, Ann Bosman, children Walter Bosman of Smyrna, Amanda Eckstrom of Rehoboth Beach, Robert Bosman and his wife Mary Jo of New Castle, Karen Virden and her husband, James of Newark; nine grandchildren; and a host of friends.

Pearl M. Woodrow,
Sunday school teacher
Pearl M. Woodrow, 107, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Christiana Care Long Term Care.
She was the widow of the Rev. Jesse M.B. Woodrow, an Episcopal clergyman who retired from St. John the Baptist in Milton in 1960. Her only son, Carroll C. Woodrow, preceded her in death in 1999. During her younger years she enjoyed teaching Sunday school and baking for church bazaars. During the 65 years she was married, she baked bread for their table twice a week. She always enjoyed laughing at a good joke.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Paul C. and his wife Christina and their children of Barrington, Ill. and by Beth A. and her husband R. Scott Latham of Portland, Ore.; and her daughter-in-law, Janet S. of Wilmington.
Graveside services were held at Loudon Park cemetery , Baltimore.
Margaret S. Sombar,

Margaret S. Sombar, 85, of Milford, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at home.
Mrs. Sombar was born in St. Albans, W.Va., daughter of the late Seth and Mary Ann Rausch Foresman. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, reading, needlepoint and held a weekly ritual with her bridge club.
Mrs. Sombar was a very devoted member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Milford and active in the Episcopal Church Women and the Needlepoint Guild and was a former director of the Altar Guild. She was a faithful volunteer for years at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maj. Michael J. Sombar in 1988; two brothers, Henry Foresman and David Foresman; and a grandson, Christopher James Riley.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael J. Jr. and Suzanne Sombar of Augusta, Ga. and S. Thomas and Rose Sombar of Milton; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Jim Riley of Newark; a sister, Alice Hallett of Milford; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 21, in Christ Episcopal Church, Second and Church streets, Milford, with burial in the church cemetery.

George E. Hopkins Jr.,

George E. Hopkins Jr., 75, of Overbrook Shores near Milton, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, after a brave battle with multiple myeloma.
Mr. Hopkins was born Nov. 9, 1928, in Milford Hospital, eldest son of the late George E. Sr. and Ruth Anne Porter Hopkins of Milton. He was a lifelong resident of Milton and a 1946 graduate of Milton High School, one of 16 graduates of that school in that year.
Mr. Hopkins retired as a supervisor from the Dupont Co., Seaford, in 1985, after nearly 38 years of service. He was one of the largest group of retirees who met once a month for breakfast until two years ago when the group dwindled to Mr. Hopkins and another retiree. After retirement he began a “second career” with Short Funeral Services, where he worked with his friends George and Janet Short until he became ill earlier this year.
Mr. Hopkins, “Pop Pop” to his five grandchildren, was an attentive and loving grandfather who never missed an opportunity to share and celebrate the events of his grandchildren’s lives. Before moving to Overbrook Shores last year, Mr. Hopkins and his wife Alice lived 55 years on Route 9 near Harbeson, where they had built a home on the family farm shortly after their marriage.
Mr. Hopkins, known as George e. to his friends, was a loving husband and family man. He was devoted to the cause of building a future for the more than 200-year old Coolspring Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder and active member for more than 50 years. He and his wife were two of the founding members of a group of young Sussex Countians who formed a “Couples Club” more than 50 years ago and which has met once a month since it began.,
Mr. Hopkins was a 32nd Degree Mason and Past Master of Endeavor Lodge No.. 17 of Milton, Past Noble Grand of Union Lodge No. 3I.O.O.F. of Georgetown, past president of the Henlopen Ruritans, a member of the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge and a past treasurer of the former Seaford Nylon Employees Council. He was a supporter of the Relay for Life, having been a survivor of an earlier battle with prostate cancer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Sandra Lee Hopkins; and two sisters, Ruth Anne Wilson and Nancy Dickerson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Alice Hopkins; two daughters, Tamra Hopkins Brittingham and her husband Michael Pelrine of Dover and Lewes, and Deborah Hopkins West and her husband Charles P. “Chip” West of Millsboro; a son, George E. “Ed” Hopkins III and his wife Deborah Hopkins of Rehoboth Beach; five grandchildren, Eban Hopkins Brittingham of Santa Fe, N.M. and Dover, George Edwards Hopkins IV, Andrew Brock Hopkins and Stephanie Renee Hopkins, all of Rehoboth Beach, and Jenna Lee West of Millsboro; a brother, William G. Hopkins and his wife Thelma of Harbeson; five nephews, Ted Waples and Bob Waples, both of Florida, William G. Hopkins Jr. of Harbeson, Greg Wilson of Milton and John Wilson of Georgia; three nieces, Connie Heck of Lewes, Reina Kim Dickerson of California and Sylvia Schenker of New York; and his faithful companion, his Great Dane Zoe.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton. Services will be held at the funeral home 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22. Burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery , Milton.
