Harry Claude Hudson,
retired parts manager
Harry Claude Hudson, 87, of Millsboro and formerly of Georgetown, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
He was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Harry E. and Mabel Marvel Hudson.
Mr. Hudson was the parts manager for Boulevard Auto Sales in Georgetown for many years, retiring in 1980. Mr. Hudson was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served combat duty in the Rome and Arno River campaign, the Po Valley campaign and the North Apennines campaign. He was a charter member of the Millsboro VFW post, a charter member of Sussex Pines Country Club in Georgetown, and an avid golfer in MSCI, where he was named the super-super senior golfer in 1991, 1993 and 1995.
In 1991, Mr. Hudson was inducted into the Eastern Sore Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Georgetown.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marian Collins Hudson; a daughter, Cathy Gorman and her husband, Bud, of Georgetown; and two grandchildren, Megan Kate Gorman and Keely O’Brian Gorman.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Fred Hudson and William H. Hudson.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 26, at Grace United Methodist Church, East Market Street, Georgetown, where friends may call at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Michael McGee will officiate. Burial will be in Union cemetery , Georgetown.

Victor Andrew Farrell,
Lewes native
Victor Andrew Farrell, 66, of Frederica, died Saturday, March 18, 2006, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Farrell was born Feb. 29, 1940, in Lewes, son of the late James and Mary Carlisle Farrell. He had resided in Frederica since 1980.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Milford Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Farrell was a self-employed contractor for more than 25 years before retiring in 1989.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James E. Farrell; a sister, Pauline Dear; and a brother, Bobby Farrell.
He is survived by his wife, Hester Workman Farrell; a son, Bobby A. Farrell of Magnolia; two daughters, Cynthia A. Regan of Weeping Water, Neb., and Vickie A. Farrell of Milford; five brothers, Clifford Farrell of Laurel, Charles Farrell and Bill Farrell, both of Milton, James Farrell Jr. of Millsboro, and Johnny Farrell of Hartly; and six grandchildren, Darlene Hoyte, Ryan Regan, Bobby Farrell, Michael Farrell, Tiffany Farrell and Brad Farrell.
Services were held in Berry-Short Funeral Home, Milford. Burial was in Milford Community cemetery.
Joyce Ann Gunckel,
homemaker, caregiver
Joyce Ann Gunckel, 57, of Houston, died Friday, March 17, 2006, in her home.
Mrs. Gunckel was born Nov. 13, 1948, in Milford, daughter of Stella Cook Blessing and the late William Blessing Jr.
She was a homemaker and also volunteered her time when needed as a caregiver to family and friends.
Mrs. Gunckel was a member of the Blue Hen Veterans of Foreign War Post 6483, Milford.
In addition to her father, Mrs. Gunckel was preceded in death by a stepbrother, Harold Nichols; and a stepsister, Shelby Sarver.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Gilbert Gunckel; her mother, Stella Blessing of Milford; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Christina Blessing of Milford; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Michael Carlisle of Harrington; two brothers, Russell Blessing of Milford and Bruce Blessing of Milton; a stepbrother, Giles Taylor of Dover; two sisters, Barbara Blessing of Houston and Bonnie Morton of Lewes; a stepsister, Shirley Garrett of Milford; three grandchildren, Dylan Blessing, Hope Blessing and Tyler Carlisle; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, march 24, in the Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call two hours earlier. Burial will be private.

Janice J. Osterholm,
retired teacher
Janice Johnson Osterholm, 61, of Milford, died Monday, March 20, 2006 in Bayhealth Medical Center, Milford Memorial Hospital.
Janice was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., the daughter of Ruth (Houy) Johnson and the late Ivar Johnson.
She was a graduate of Penn Hills High School in Pittsburgh, Pa. She then graduated from Thiel College in Greenville, Pa. with a bachelor’s degree in English and continued her education at University of Pittsburgh, where she received her master’s in education.
While in college, Janice studied overseas in France during her junior year. Janice began her teaching career at Milford High School, teaching English for four years. After her children were born, she taught part time at Wesley College in Dover while she raised her two daughters.
After her girls had grown up, she continued her full time teaching career at Milford Middle School, teaching language arts for 16 years before retiring in 2002.
Janice was a member of the Reformation Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Lutheran Church Women and served on the Christian Service Committee.
She was a member of the American Association of University Women and volunteered at the Calvary United Methodist Church Clothes Closet. Janice was an avid horsewoman. She had been active in the Small Wonder Pony Club and also volunteered with the Delaware Therapeutic Riding Association. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Albert V. Osterholm, Jr.; two daughters and sons-in-law Jill E. and Kelly Racz, of Lewes and Anne L. and Gregory Pribble, of Evington, Va.; her mother Ruth (Houy) Johnson, of Milford; five grandchildren, Emily Racz, Andrew Racz, Chandler Pribble, Connor Pribble and Courtney Pribble.
Memorial services were held at Reformation Lutheran Church, with burial private.

Sally W. Zinnato,

Sally W. Zinnato, 75, of Millsboro, passed away Saturday March 18, 2006 in Lewes.
Sally enjoyed playing bridge and was an active member of the Rehoboth Village Improvement Association (VIA), Angola Homemakers, and the Indian River Senior Center. Sally will be deeply missed by her loving family and her many friends.
Mrs. Zinnato is survived by her husband of nearly 55 years, Armand P. Zinnato; two sons, Ken Zinnato and his wife Nancy of Wilmington, and Ron Zinnato and his wife Constance of Orlando, Fla.; three daughters, Angela Z. Rohrich and her husband Skip of Newark, Diana Ryan and her husband Ed of Wilmington, and Donna Manista and her husband Joe of Hockessin; five grandchildren, Kenny, Brandon, Jeremy and Ryan Zinnato and Annie Manista; and her brother Don Dybyk and his wife Dema of St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada.
A Memorial Mass was be celebrated Thursday, March 23, 11 a.m., at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church, just north of Five Points on Delaware Route 1, Lewes, DE. Burial will be private. There will be no visitation.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude The Apostle Building Fund, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, DE 19958.

Elsie Baker,
retired from DuPont
Elsie Hardwick “Reds” Clark Baker, of Lewes and formerly of Greenville, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 17, 2006, with family in Lewes.
Elsie was born in Wilmington on May 8, 1926, daughter of the late Lewis and Anna Hardwick. She was raised in Chadds Ford, Pa. and was a graduate of Alexis I. Dupont H.S. and Goldey Beacom College. She worked with Wilmington Trust Company of Greenville and the DuPont Company, retiring in the late 1980s.
Elsie was a longtime resident of both Greenville and Lewes, where she enjoyed antiquing, boating, fishing, dancing and was an avid gardener. She was a member of the Elks Club, Lady Auxiliary member of the American Legion and VFW, Red Hat Society, and a longtime member of the Lewes Yacht Club. She was secretary of the Big Band Society of Delmarva, volunteered for the New Life Thrift Shop and danced with the Sea Shell Productions from the Lewes Senior Center. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and Granny, and is now dancing with the angels.
She was predeceased by her husbands, John Joseph Clark and John T. Baker; a brother, Aaron Hardwick; and a granddaughter. Elsie is survived by her son, John “Jack” Clark Sr. of Wilmington; and daughters, Nancy C. Dickson of Raleigh, N.C. and Susan C. Yun of Lewes; as well as seven grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday March 22, at 11 am at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church, 101 Old Kennett Road, Wilmington. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Friends may call at the Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 21, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday morning at the church.
Thaddeus J. Stokley,

Thaddeus J. “Lump” Stokley, 77, of Millsboro, died Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Stokley was born Jan. 26, 1929, in Elizabeth City, N.C., the son of the late Joe Thomas and Rubell Moore Stokley.
He was a carpenter for many years for several area contractors and then was self-employed as a carpenter until his retirement in 1993. He attended Mt. Zion Holiness Church in Milton and the New Holy Trinity Church of God in Christ in Millsboro.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Stokley is survived by his wife of six years, Pamela Tunnell Stokley; a son, Bernard Simmons of Millsboro; two daughters, Takisha Tunnell of Georgetown and Shawna Tunnell of Seaford; a devoted niece, Revie Banks of Elizabeth City, N.C.; several grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Services were held at Mt. Zion Holiness Church, Milton, with burial in Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.
Ronald T. Brittingham,

Ronald T. “Britt” Brittingham, 89, of Dagsboro, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford.
Mr. Brittingham was a World War II Army medic and participated in the Normandy Invasion, Battle of the Ardennes, the Northern France Campaign and the Rhineland. He was a business manager for Easter States, Agway and Southern States. He also served 10 years with the Sussex County government in charge of security. Ronald was past commander of VFW Post 7422 in Millsboro and a member of Post 19 American Legion of Laurel.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lois Wilder Brittingham; a son, Craig Brittingham and companion, Dawn Carroll of Laurel; a sister, Ruth Shields of Boston, Mass.; a grandson, Stephen Brittingham; and a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Brittingham.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Adolphus and Harland Brittingham; and a sister, Emily Welch. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 23, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call at noon. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Patriots Way, Millsboro with full military honors.
Louis E. Hickman,
retired poultry farmer
Louis E. Hickman, 76, of Millsboro, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Monday, March 20, 2006, at home.
Mr. Hickman was born July 25, 1929, in Ocean View, son of the late Ulysses H. and Manie Tyre Hickman.
He was a retired poultry farmer and truck driver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Keith Hickman.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Margaret June Savage Hickman; six children, Louis Hickman Jr. of Ocala, Fla., Ulysses Hickman and his wife, Sheila, of Gumboro; Deborah Jarvis of Georgetown; Linda Sutton of Salisbury,, Md., Dwayne Hickman and his wife, Dottie, of Dagsboro; and Donald Hickman of Georgetown; a daughter-in-law, Sandy, of Millsboro; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 23, in the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher Street, Frankford, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mariner’s Bethel cemetery , Ocean View.
Mylene Day Tivnan
Avid fisherman
Mylene Day Tivnan, 90, of Milford, died Friday, March 17, 2006, at Milford Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Tivnan was born and raised in Hartford, Conn., daughter of the late Frank and Mary Bickford Day.
She came to Delaware 24 years ago. She loved her New England background. Mylene was an avid fisherman and enjoyed doing volunteer work at the Lewes Senior Center where she knitted hats and gloves for local children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Tivnan; and a sister Elizabeth Killian.
Mrs. Tivnan is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Robert Byrnes of Milford; three grandchildren: Leysa Adamson, Laura Benson and James Bach; four great-grandchildren: Amber Benson, Courtney Dill, Anthony Adamson, and Matthew Adamson; and a sister Phyllis Calio of Connecticut.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where a Memorial Service will be held Thursday March 23, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jack Cohen officiating.

James L. Cresson,

James Leedom Cresson, 60, a longtime Delaware journalist, died Monday, March 13, 2006 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Centreville, Md.
Services for the Milford resident will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, in Reformation Lutheran Church at 613 Lakeview Avenue in Milford.
Mr. Cresson was born in Milford May 12, 1945, the son of James and Edith Marjorie Mulholland Cresson. He graduated from Fishburn Military Academy, Waynesboro, Va., in 1963 and attended University of Maryland and Tusculum College in Tennessee.
In 1968, at the height of the war in Vietnam, Mr. Cresson joined the U.S. Army.
He developed his skills as writer and photographer while serving a year’s tour of duty in Vietnam and continued to use those skills over the next several decades as reporter, photographer, editor and publisher in Delaware.
At various different times over those years he wrote for Delaware State News, Middletown Transcript, Delaware Coast Press and the Cape Gazette in Lewes where he was employed at the time of his death. Prior to joining the Cape Gazette in 1998, Cresson and his wife, Corinne, edited and published the Long Neck News in Sussex County.
He won several awards over the years from the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association and was recently notified that he had taken a first-place prize for his reporting on Delaware Department of Transportation financial problems related to the depleted Transportation Trust Fund.
“Jim was a dog of a reporter,” said Cape Gazette Sports Editor Dave Frederick. “I remember a story he did on the pit bull maulings over in Delmar. It was an amazing piece of journalism. And most recently he did a piece on the new Korean War Memorial in Georgetown. It just struck me how much information – including local folks who had served in that war – that he found for the story.”
As a veteran, Mr. Cresson was particularly sympathetic to veterans’ issues and proud of his service in Vietnam. “He told me a story once of his last couple of days in Vietnam,” said his wife, Corinne.
“He was stationed in Saigon and went out to interview a Green Beret troop. He spent the night with them in the jungle. They went out the next morning on patrol and he went back to Saigon to file the story. That whole troop disappeared – never another word from them. That stuck with him.”
Between journalism stints in Delaware, Mr. Cresson traveled the world, making his way as a wanderer through Africa and Europe. “He hitchhiked across the U.S. at least three times,” said Corinne, “and lived in Mexico and Arizona before returning to Delaware to stay in 1985.”
Mr. Cresson loved to sing and play guitar, was an accomplished carver and woodworker and had uncanny talent for finding native American artifacts – especially arrowheads – in freshly plowed Delaware fields.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Milford and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Cresson is survived by a daughter and son, Tacy and Caleb, of Milford. He is also survived by his mother, Marjorie Cresson Dobson of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Jessica Coffey, Milford; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Dee Coffey of Cocoa, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Larry Price, Glen Mills, Pa.; a niece and nephew, Susan Price and Brad Price of Glen Mills, Pa.; and one grandchild, Ryleigh Coffey of Cocoa, Fla.
