WILLIE JAMES BAREFIELD
Willie James Barefield, 78, of 2505 High Ave., Panama City, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in his home. He was a captain at the Bay County Sheriff's office, retiring in 1986 after 34 years of service. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, St. Andrew Masonic Lodge No. 212, Scottish Rite, Shaddai Temple and the Westside Men's Club. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Rose Barefield; son, Tom Barefield and his wife Nicole; two grandchildren, Tommy Barefield and Michele Barefield; brother, Russell Barefield and his wife Erma; two sisters, Irene Schwarz and her husband Arthur, all of Panama City, and Mayolis Decker of California. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Doug Newton officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens with honors conducted by the Sheriff Department Honor Guard and Masonic rites conducted by the St. Andrew Masonic Lodge No. 212. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today. The Masonic lodge will open at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

CALVIN BRADLEY
Mr. Calvin Bradley, age 76, of 902 Helen Ave., Springfield, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at a local hospital. He had been a resident of the area since 1950, coming here from Slocomb, Ala. Mr. Bradley was a member of the Eastside Assembly of God Church and loved to work with the youth. He also loved working in his garden, fishing and hunting. Mr. Bradley is survived by a daughter, Barbara Concon and her husband Narciso of Panama City; a son, Wayne Bradley and his wife Sandra of Chipley; two sisters, Lela Sawyer of Malvern, Ala., and Mandy Sapp of Steele City, Fla.; a brother, Auburn Bradley of Malvern, Ala.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sammy Spence officiating. Interment will follow at Lynn Haven Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Terry Raffield, Ralph Hammond, Tommy Bradley, Carl Bradley, Jimmy Sawyer and Jo Mack Sawyer. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Sept. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m.

EMMY LOU 'LULU' DRAKE CLARK
Ms. Emmy Lou "Lulu" Drake Clark, age 49, of 2629 Amelia Ave., Panama City, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at a local hospital. She had been a resident of the Panama City area for 45 years, coming here from Quincy, Fla. Ms. Clark grew up in the Drummond Park area of St. Andrews in Bay County and was Baptist by faith. She is survived by two daughters, Jessica Henderson and Sherry Michelle Forrester, both of Panama City; three grandchildren: Jesse Hill, Lee Forrester and Marissa Henderson; a sister, Sandra Drake Davis and her husband Curtis of Panama City; her father, Milton Drake Sr. of Panama City; nieces, Teri Reynolds and her husband Allen and Vivien Oliver; nephews, Richard "Ricky" Allen Strickland II and Dave Payton Davidson; and several aunts and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Demoss and the Rev. R.C. Warren officiating. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. EDT the same day at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Quincy, Fla. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Richard "Ricky" Allen Strickland II, Dave Payton Davidson, Bobby Thomas, Edgar Thomas, Allen Reynolds, Bucky Fidler and Mike Nelson. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Sept. 9, from 4 to 6 p.m.. Donations may be made to Gideon Memorial Bible Fund, P.O. Box 685, Panama City, Fla. 32402 in Ms. Clark's memory.

CHARLES RAY HAYES
Charles (Ray) Hayes, of Callaway, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in a local hospital at the age of 74. Ray was born in Columbus, Ind., in 1926 to Charles Raymond Hayes Sr. and Merle Rothrock. His mom was killed in an auto accident, so his Grandparents Rothrock raised him and his brother and sister, along with their own children. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served seven years. He then worked for a tree expert company until he joined the U.S. Air Force. He took his basic training at Syracuse, N.Y., and then rode the Bay Line passenger train into Panama City. He stepped off the train into the beautiful, warm sunshine and said this is home for me. He was stationed at Tyndall AFB Crash Rescue, where he was on the boats by the Tyndall Bridge. While in the Navy, he served on several ships including troop ships, the U.S.S. Hayes, and others. He served during World War II, Korea, and did two tours in Vietnam. Some of the places he went were: St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, Maine, New York, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Arizona, South Carolina, Philippines, Hawaii, Florida, Japan, Guam, Thailand, Taiwan, Iowa, Texas, and others. He spent a total of 27 years in the military. He was the recipient of many ribbons while serving his country in the military, including the Air Force Commendation Medal. Ray was a member of Callaway United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of AFSA and FLO-ALA Locksmith Association. He retired at Patrick AFB in 1976 to Callaway and opened the Callaway Locksmith Shop where he worked for another 15 years. He met his wife of 46 years, Margie Wise, in Panama City and they were married Aug. 9, 1954. He is survived by his wife, Margie Hayes of Callaway; two daughters, Donnieta Hayes of Aiea, Hawaii, Marie Jolly and her husband James of Callaway; son-in-law, Kevin Wilson Sr. of Aiea, Hawaii; five grandchildren: Kevin Wilson of Hawaii, Nicole Wilson of Aiea, Hawaii, Tiffany Jolly, Andrew Jolly and Robert Jolly, all of Callaway; three great-grandchildren: Kaiimi Wilson, Kaiman Wilson, and Kainoa Wilson of Aiea, Hawaii; godson, Christopher Hillier of Marianna; brothers-in-law: David Wise and his wife Lynn of Richwood, Texas, Alton Wise and his wife Ladonia of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Monroe Wise and his wife Memorie of Bayou George, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Moore and Jean Weeks; a brother, Oscar Lee and his wife Betty of Sturgis, Ky.; two sisters, Donnieta Hait and her husband Harvey of Indiana and Patricia Carter of Florida; an unofficial adopted daughter, Sonja Johnson of Hawaii and her son, Zachery Johnson, also of Hawaii. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Tyndall AFB. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, Sept. 10, from 3 to 5 p.m.

ELMIRA L. KNIGHT
Mrs. Elmira L. Knight, 82, of 1209 E. 11th St., passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she resided with her son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Gwendolyn Knight. Funeral services for Mrs. Knight will be held today, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. at St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. Rufus L. Wood Jr., officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church one hour before the funeral.

MARVIN L. MERRITT SR.
Mr. Marvin L. Merritt Sr., age 81, formerly of Rochester, N.Y., passed away after a brief illness Friday, Sept. 1, 2000. He had worked for General Motors, Rochester Products Division, for 37 years as a senior engineer, after moving to Panama City, Fla. Mr. Merritt worked for Judge Elinor, Marine Institute, Haney Vocational School, and for the past 12 years at Life Management as a friend and teacher. He was a member of the Optimist Club, Elks Club of Rochester, N.Y., and was a league bowler, breaking 300 several times as well as having a 200+ average. Mr. Merritt leaves behind his beloved wife and partner of 63 years, Janette A. Merritt of Panama City; sons: Marvin L. Merritt Jr., Barry S. Merrit, Terence K. Merritt and Bradley A. Merritt; nine grandchildren: and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela A. Merritt. A private memorial service was held and officiated by the Rev. Charles Key. A graveside service will be held at a later date for family and friends.

BARBARA CAROL ROBINSON
Mrs. Barbara Carol Robinson, age 75, of 24 Harrison Ave., Panama City, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at a local hospital. She had been a resident of the area since 1980, coming here from Cambridge City, Ind. Mrs. Robinson enjoyed her church and was a member of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church of Panama City Beach. She is survived by her sons, Robert A. Robinson and his wife Dana J. of Callaway, Fla., and Jim L. Robinson and his wife Janie of Lakewood, Colo.; daughters, Robin Cannon and her husband Michael of Palmyra, Pa., and Tommae L. Hendershot and her husband Melvin of McKee, Ky.; three brothers: Harry L. Butler Jr., John Butler, and Jay Butler, all of Richmond, Ind. ; two sisters, Joyce Imhoff and Mary Reichter, both of Richmond Ind.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Lydick officiating.

HENRY TOLBERT ATWELL
Henry Tolbert Atwell, of 2111 East Baldwin Road, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in a New Orleans hospital. He had been a resident of Bay County since 1943. He owned and managed Atwell Outdoor Advertising, Inc. He had been a member of Hiland Park Baptist Church since May 1, 1949. He had served as Chairman of Deacons, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the Property Acquisition committee of the church. He served as president of the Gulf Coast College Foundation in 1973. He was a member of the Ira Lindsey Masonic Lodge No. 365, York Rite, Scottish Rite and the Shaddai Temple where he served on the Care-Van unit. He was a Gideon, a founding member of the Rescue Mission and a member of the Salvation Army board. He was preceded in death by a son, John Tolbert Atwell. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Frances Pilcher Atwell of Panama City; a daughter, Julie Clark and husband, Roger, of Panama City; a grandson, Roger Clark, Jr.; three brothers; an aunt, Lola Exum of Marianna; brother-in-law, James Pilcher; two sisters-in-law, Judy Ainsworth and Betty Scruggs; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Atwell will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in the Hiland Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Pickerill, the Rev. Craig Conner and the Rev. Robert Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Those desiring may make a contribution to the Building Fund or Property Acquisition Fund of the Hiland Park Baptist Church in memory of Tolbert Atwell.
