Eugene Sorrell

Eugene Sorrell, 69, of Destin, died March 25, 2001.

He was the groundskeeper for many years at the Destin Campground.

Survivors are his children, Eugene Sorrell Jr. of Oklahoma, Gary Sorrell of Ohio, Valerie Connour of Michigan, Ginger Fugate of Florida, and Peggy Grim of Michigan.

Memorial services for Mr. Sorrel will be at the Destin Campground office at 209 Beach Drive, Destin, from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, March 29.

Billy Joe Pierce

Billy Joe Pierce, 66, of Destin, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at his residence under Hospice care.

He was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran of 23 years, serving in the Vietnam War. He retired from the city of Fort Walton Beach where he worked as a mechanic. He was a member of the American Legion and Elks clubs in Destin.

Mr. Pierce is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jeanne; daughter Cindy Pierce and son Keith Pierce, both of Destin; brother Edward Roberts and sister Vioma Jean Pierce, both of Atoka, Okla.; and by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home with Hospice chaplain Frank Dole officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Florida, 101 Hart St., Niceville, FL 32578.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Liberato Vota

Joseph Liberato Vota, 89, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at his home in Sunny Hills. He was born Oct. 7, 1911, in New York, N.Y., the son of the late Felix and Agatha Troisi Vota.

Mr. Vota was active in his community for many years and was very active in his church all his life. He was a member and president of the Marlboro Township School Board while living in New Jersey, and sang in his church choir all his life. He was a founding member of Corpus Christi Parish in Destin, as well as the Catholic Church of St. Rita in Santa Rosa Beach. He was ordained a deacon for the diocese of Pensacola in 1980. He was a retired United States Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Duderich Vota, who died in 1997.

Survivors includes his daughter Ethel Vota Sproul and husband Paul, of Wilmington, Del.; sons Joseph A. Vota and wife Christine, Philip D. Vota and wife Beatrice, and William J. Vota and wife Cheryl, all of Marlboro Township, N.J., George E. Vota and wife Garnet of Destin, and Stephen F. Vota and wife Helen of SeaGirt, N.J.; brother William R. Vota and wife Mary Lou of Weston; and sister Antoinette Truccola of Garnerville, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Friday, March 23, at St. Rita Catholic Church in Santa Rosa Beach with the Monsignor Flaherty officiating. Burial followed in Gulf Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Vestiarki Sisters of Jesus, 3919 Vistula Drive, Sunny Hills, FL 32428.

Clary-Godwin Freeport Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Donald J. Schile Sr.

Donald J. Schile Sr., 85, of Destin, died March 15, 2001, in a local hospital.

He was born in New Haven, Conn., on Oct. 7, 1915. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and was a member and board member of Faith Assembly Christian Church in Miramar Beach. He was also past president of Sandestin Lions Club, member of American Legion and a Master Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Schile of Destin; son, Donald Schile Jr., and wife, Sharon, of Pace; daughter, Cheryl Pence and husband, Clyde, of Pensacola; sister, Jayne Perez, of Colombia, South America; grandchildren Rebecca Rose, Nicole Rose, Victoria Schile, Ashley Hendrickson, Trey Hendrickson and Sarah Pence.

Graveside services were conducted Monday, March 19, in Gulf Cemetery in Santa Rosa Beach with the Rev. Toy Arnette officiating. Burial followed.

McLaughlin Mortuary in Fort Walton Beach handled the arrangements.

Joyce E. Van Atta

Joyce E. Van Atta, 66, of Destin, died Thursday, March 8, 2001.

She was actively involved with her husband at Destin Collision Inc. and was a former member of the Elkettes.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Leon W. Van Atta; four sons Michael D. of Blufton, Ohio, Larry J. of Destin, Steve L. of Destin and Tom L. of Tampa; daughter Teresa L. Sybert of Destin; sister Denita of Cincinnati; stepmother Jean Wolfley of Cincinnati; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Kathrine Wolfley, and sister, Janice Kissling of Kenton, Ohio.

Services were conducted Sunday, March 11, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Boone officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a charity of your choice.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach was in charge of arrangements.

Gordon R. Barrington

Gordon R. Barrington, 73, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001. He retired to Destin eight years ago after a 45-year career with the airline industry.

He was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Highland Park, Mich. He attended schools in Massachusetts and graduated from the Spartan School of Aeronautics, Tulsa, Okla.

He served with the United States Marine Corps in North China during WWII and again during the Korean war at Cherry Point, N.C., as an air traffic controller.

Mr. Barrington was a member and past flotilla commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary; charter and life member of the Marine Corp League, Emerald Coast Detachment #915; member of China Marine Association and the Yellowbird Chapter of the Delta Pioneers; member and volunteer of Friends of Henderson Beach, SRA.

Mr. Barrington is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marcia J. Barrington; sons Paul Barrington and wife, Rae; and Jeffrey Barrington; daughters Jane Kramer and husband William and Carolyn Hill and husband Stephen; grandchildren Nicole Barrington, Sean and Ryan Kramer, John, Mark and David Barrington and Graham Hill; brother Wayne Barrington and wife Gayle of Austin, Texas.

Burial and memorial services will be at sea Sunday, March 11. Family will depart U.S. Coast Guard Station Destin at 1 p.m. Friends wishing to bid a final farewell may attend a brief ceremony at the dock prior to departure.

Remembrances may be made to a charity of your choice.

Alice Smith

Alice Smith, 83, died Feb. 26, 2001, at her daughter's home after an extended illness.

Mrs. Smith lived most of her life in Walton County, coming from Pennsylvania, where she worked as a nurse, both in New York City and at White Wilson Hospital in Fort Walton Beach.

She was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Hamlin, Pa., to the late Merrill and Freida Cannon.

Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth F. Smith, in 1997 after 55 years of marriage. She was a member of Santa Rosa Beach Community Church, which the Smiths were instrumental in starting in 1949.

She was a member of Women's Civic Club of Panama City Beach and Women's Missionary Service. She loved gardening with herbs and freshwater fishing.

Smith is survived by one daughter, Faith, and son-in-law, Norman Parr; sister, Ruth Intoccia, and husband, Vincent; several nieces and nephews; two step-granddaughters, Noelle Parr Nation and husband, Nathaniel, and Abby Parr Kerr and husband, Timothy; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 1, at Community Church in Santa Rosa Beach with the Rev. Robert Hendricks and the Rev. Donald Ullrich officiating Thursday. Interment followed at Gulf Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Community Church, P.O. Box 1723, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459, or Hospice of Northwest Florida, 2589 Jenks Ave., Panama City, FL 32401.

George M. "Mac" McCoy

George M. "Mac" McCoy, 63, of Owensboro, Ky., died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at his residence.

He was retired from the Associated Press news service, was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Young McCoy; daughters Carrie Lynn Harpenau of Destin and Lisetta Jean Whitworth of Madisonville, Ky., and Lenna Marie Chapman of Long Island, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Deanna Adkinson of Paduca, Ky.; a stepson, Darrick Lee of Ledbetter, Ky.; a sister, Betty Hayes of Flat Rock, Ill.; nine grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Thursday, March 1, at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro, Ky.

The family requests donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, 319 West 10th St., Owensboro, KY 42301, or Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Andrew C. Campbell

Andrew C. Campbell, 77, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at his home in Destin.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Colin, and his wife, Laura, of Memphis, and Douglas of Bel Alton, Md.; one granddaughter, Amanda; two sisters and three brothers.

Campbell was retired from the U.S. Navy Oceanographic Office and was the former proprietor of the York Springs Winery in York Springs, Pa.

A memorial services will be conducted in Carlisle, Pa., the day and time to be determined.

The family requests that memorial donations be sent to Sacred Heart Foundation, P.O. Box 2700, Pensacola, FL 32513.

Arthur Douglas Cox Sr.

Arthur Douglas Cox Sr., 89, of Panama City Beach, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at a local nursing facility. He had lived in the Santa Rosa Beach area for more than 20 years, moving there from Destin.

Mr. Cox was a charter boat captain and was a Protestant.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Cox of Panama City; two sons, Arthur D. Cox Jr. and his wife Pamela of Orange Spring, Ms., and Richard Cox and his wife Kathleen of Topeka, Kan.; two daughters, Karen Miller of Callaway and Charlene Sheeren and her husband William of Navarre; a half-brother, Gordon Cox of Corona, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home of Panama City is in charge of arrangements.

Anita Louise Greenhall

Anita Louise Greenhall, 45, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, after a two-year battle with breast cancer.

Mrs. Greenhall was born June 19, 1955, in Patchogue, Long Island, N.Y., to Charles and Louise Carlino.

She is survived by her husband of 18 years, John Greenall; her daughter, Jamie Greenall, 11; her father, Charles Carlino; and brothers Martin and Wayne Carlino.

She was employed for 15 years by Dr. Robert Ratcliff, a Destin dentist.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Corpus Christi Church in Destin, Father Howard Lesch officiating.

The family requests donations be made to The National Breast Cancer Coalition, 1707 L Street NW, Suite 1060, Washington, D.C., or Hospice of Northwest Florida.

Jane Leslie Ross

Jane Leslie Ross, 35, of Destin, died Jan. 16, 2001, at a local hospital. She was born Feb. 11, 1965, in Mobile, Ala., daughter of the late Leslie and Betty McKenzie.

Funeral services were conducted Jan. 19 in Monroeville, Ala., and burial was in Bryant Cemetery in Sinchburg, Ala.

Ross is survived by her husband, Richard, "Diki" Ross of Destin; one sister, Shann Morris, and her husband, Randy, of Chunchula, Ala.; a niece, Kristin Morris; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach was in charge of local arrangements.
