LONGWOOD -- Virdie E. Simmons of Longwood died Monday in Longwood. She was 85.

Mrs. Simmons was a homemaker.

Born in Hazelhurst, Ga., she moved from Gainesville to Longwood 20 years ago.

She attended First Assembly of God in Hawthorne.

Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include a daughter; two brothers; a sister; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Ida Lois Simonton

Ida Lois Simonton of Gainesville died Tuesday in Gainesville. She was 87.

Mrs. Simonton was a homemaker.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, she moved from Port Arthur to Gainesville 12 years ago.

She was a member of Bethel Temple Non-Denominational Church, Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacquelyn S. Cake of Gainesville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Ruth Z. Stefan

Ruth Z. Stefan of Gainesville died Sunday at her daughter's home in Gainesville. She was 67.

Mrs. Stefan was a quality control supervisor for CBS Record Division. She also formerly volunteered for the Mid-Florida Commodity Program.

Born in Ardmore, Pa., she lived in Lambs Terrace, N.J., before moving from Summerfield to Gainesville seven months ago.

She was a past president of the Ladies' Auxiliary Fire Department in Lamb Terrace and was a member of New Life Presbyterian Church in Fruitland Park.

Mrs. Stefan was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Stefan.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara L. McKinney of Marietta, Okla., and Deborah L. Stefan of Gainesville; a brother, Michael L. Campana of Citra; and a sister, Adelaide Cook of Siklerville, N.J.

Edna Jean Underwood

WILLISTON -- Edna Jean Underwood of Williston died Monday at Oakview Rehab and Care Center in Williston. She was 71.

Mrs. Underwood was a homemaker.

Born in Miami Beach, she moved from Hollywood to Williston two years ago.

Survivors include two sons, James Underwood of Hollywood and Barney Underwood of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Margonet Henke of Tampa and Jenee Hargis of Williston; and three grandsons.

Frank Wojcik

Frank Wojcik of Gainesville died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 76.

Mr. Wojcik was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He also served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II.

Born in New Haven, Conn., he moved from Miami to Gainesville 13 years ago.

He was a member of American Legion Post 16 and the Men's Club at Grace United Methodist Church.

Mr. Wojcik was preceded in death by a stepson, Walter E. Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Elsa Wojcik of Gainesville; a son, Francis T. Wojcik of Chester, Conn.; a daughter, Veronica L. Burban of North Branford, Conn.; a stepson, Warren D. Smith of Wallingford, Conn.; three brothers, Thomas Wojcik of North Branford, Joseph Wojcik of Killingworth, Conn., and Theodore Wojcik of Deep River, Conn.; three sisters, Josephine Burban of Branford, Helen Pollack of East Haven, Conn., and Mary Criscuolo of North Branford; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren.

Francis Eugene Clawson

HAWTHORNE -- Francis Eugene "Gene" Clawson of Hawthorne died Tuesday at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He was 72.

Mr. Clawson was a retired senior manager at Florida Power and Light. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Born in Derry, Pa., he moved from Miami to Hawthorne 12 years ago.

He was an elections inspector in Putnam County, a past officer for Star Lake Homeowners Association, a Little League coach, a Boy Scouts leader and a Miami Dolphins football fan.

Mr. Clawson was a Catholic.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Rains.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Alderman Clawson of Hawthorne; two daughters, Barbara Jean Sjostrom of Savage, Minn., and Carol Fowler of Florahome; five sons, Robert Rains of Melbourne, Scott Rains of Kennesaw, Ga., Christopher Clawson of Sheboygan, Wis., Lawrence Clawson of Brunswick, Ga., and Edward Earl Clawson of Latrobe, Pa.; a sister, Mary Jane McCollough of Erie, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hawthorne Woman's Club Scholarship Fund or to the Boy Scouts.

Sam Collins

JACKSONVILLE -- Sam Collins of Jacksonville died July 5 in Jacksonville due to an automobile accident. He was 65.

Mr. Collins was born in Williston and moved to Jacksonville six years ago.

He was educated in Levy County.

Mr. Collins was a Baptist.

Survivors include two sisters, Sarah Smith of Raleigh and Hattie B. Jacobs of Williston; and a brother, Eddie Collins of Dania.

Nellie Lucille Davis

STARKE -- Nellie Lucille Davis of Starke died Wednesday at her home. She was 74.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and a member of Westside Baptist Church in Haines City.

Born in Sylvester, Ga., she moved from Haines City to Starke 21 years ago.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Etheridge Sr. of Starke; a brother, W.D. Veasey of Avon Park; two sisters, Jetta Mae Mott of Toledo, Ohio, and Edna Godwin of Quitman, Ga.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Wesley Gerome Dunaway

LAKE CITY -- Wesley Gerome Dunaway of Lake City died Tuesday at his home after a long illness. He was 50.

Mr. Dunaway was a sandblaster. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Born in Bainbridge, Ga., he moved from Jasper to Lake City nine years ago.

He was a Methodist.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Dunaway of Lake City; two sons, Stephen Dunaway of Jasper and Wesley Dunaway of Lake City; two daughters, Rachel Lee Dunaway and Nikki Larsson, both of Lake City; his mother, Edith Dunaway of Jasper; three brothers, Danny Ray Dunaway of Bradford, and Wayne Dunaway and Richard Dunaway, both of Jasper; and four sisters, Frances Love, Tommy Sue Lanier, Karen Gonzalas and Molly Mathis, all of Jasper.

Horace Willard Hare

TRENTON -- Horace Willard Hare of Trenton died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville. He was 83.

Mr. Hare was a former driver for Greyhound Bus Lines.

Born in Kissimmee, Mr. Hare moved from Tampa to Trenton 17 years ago.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Trenton.

Survivors include his wife, Effie Lee Hare of Trenton; three sons, Horace Hare Jr. of Holiday, Ronald Hare of Tampa and John Wall of Indian Mound, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren.
