MARCH 17, 1931 -- AUG. 2, 2004

OAK HILL -- Lucille L. Schwentker, 73, of Second Street, who worked in the maintenance department of the Geneva (Ohio) School System before her retirement, died Monday at home.

Mrs. Schwentker was born in Derby, Va., and moved here in 2000 from Jefferson, Ohio. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Daytona Beach. She enjoyed shopping, cooking and collecting roosters.

Survivors include four sons, Keith Blakemore, Manning, S.C., Bill Schwentker, Andover, Ohio, and Kelly and John, both of Rock Creek, Ohio; four daughters, Linda Stout, Parma, Ohio, Pam McVey, Walterboro, S.C., Diane Blackie, Madison, Ohio, and Jackie Truckey, Rock Creek; three sisters, Jean Adams, Pensacola; Dell Hassett, Paradise, Calif., and Barbara Plauck, Carpentersville, Ill.; 25 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Dudley, Edgewater, is in charge.

Ruth Stevens

JUNE 16, 1909 -- AUG. 3, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Ruth A. Stevens, 95, of Egret Court, a resident since 1989, died Tuesday at Port Orange Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Port Orange.

Mrs. Stevens, a homemaker, was born in Hamilton, Pa., and moved to this area from Hackettstown, N.J. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, North Liberty, Ind.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Mountford, Edgewater; and five grandchildren. Dudley, Edgewater, is in charge.

Charles Walker

FEB. 8, 2002 -- AUG. 2, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Charles Walker, 2, died Monday at Halifax Medical Center of natural causes. He suffered from complex medical conditions since birth.

Charles was in the custody of the Department of Children and Families, whose staff members considered themselves his family. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Samuel Washington

DEC. 1, 1932 -- AUG. 3, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Samuel James Washington, 71, of Continental Drive, a heavy equipment operator for the City of Daytona Beach before his retirement, died Tuesday at home.

Mr. Washington, an Army veteran, moved here in 1949 from his native Plant City. He was a former member of Mount Olive A.M.E. Church, Bealsville. Mr. Washington enjoyed football, baseball and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine; two sons, Samuel Jr. and Emanuel, both of Daytona Beach; eight daughters, Carolyn Robinson, Gwen Brown, Abigail and Diana Washington, Betheia Wright, Belinda Lamb and Greta Edwards, all of Daytona Beach, and Sharon Washington, Fort Bragg, N.C.; a brother, George, Plant City; a sister, Beulah Ingram; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Thompson is in charge.

Robert Wilyard

JAN. 3, 1940 -- AUG. 2, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Robert Wayne Wilyard, 64, of 36th Street, a master electrician with Bright Electric in San Clemente, Calif., died Monday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mr. Wilyard, a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, was born in Clarksville, Tenn., and moved here in 1998 from San Clemente. He enjoyed fishing, reading the Bible and shooting and collecting guns.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Cynthia; six sons, Charlie, Edgewater, John, Groveland, Joe, Ocoee, Robert, Lake Forest, Calif., Chris, San Clemente, and Scott, Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.; a daughter, Deedee Sheldrup, Edgewater; a brother, Allen, and two sisters, Peggy Vorris and Elma Wynar, all of Detroit; and nine grandchildren. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Daniel Wooten

AUG. 8, 1936 -- AUG. 2, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Daniel Lee Wooten, 67, of North Halifax Avenue, a pest control technician, died Monday at home.

A native of Minden, W.Va., Mr. Wooten moved here in 1977 from West Virginia. He enjoyed reading.

Survivors include two sons, Louis, Beckley, W.Va., and Daniel Jr., Germany; three daughters, Charlene Wooten, Daytona Beach, Cindy Trevino, Fayetteville, N.C., and Theresa Stover, West Virginia; two brothers, Andrew, Holly Hill, and Tom, Minden; a sister, Sue Duda, Colorado; and grandchildren. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Bernardo Zapien

JULY 2, 1968 - AUG. 1, 2004

DELAND -- Bernardo Zapien, 36, of North Amelia Avenue, a ceramic tile installer, died Sunday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Pompano Beach.

Mr. Zapien, a native of Mexico, moved to this area in 2000 from Seville. He enjoyed sports, especially soccer.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Maria; three sons, Oziel, Alexis and Cesar, and a daughter, Patricia, all of DeLand; his parents, Maria and Obdulio Zapien; a brother, Mateo; and six sisters, Eudoxia Martinez, Sabina Lopez, Juana, Maria and Celia Zapien, and Herminia Molina. Carpenter-Curry is in charge.

Frances Zitterman

JAN. 28, 1918 -- AUG. 2, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Frances Zitterman, 86, of Enterprise Road, a resident since 1972, died Monday at Orange City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, DeBary.

Mrs. Zitterman moved here from her native New York. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, Roger Lisi, and a brother, Alfred Saulino, both of New York; and two grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 111 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 100, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Maria Caspani

AUG. 2, 1922 -- AUG. 1, 2004

SOUTH DAYTONA -- Maria B. Caspani, 81, of Hickorywood Drive, a resident since 1969, died Sunday at home.

Mrs. Caspani, a homemaker, moved here from her native Waterbury, Conn. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Alberto Breccia, Gainesville; and three sisters, Laura Orso, Waterbury, Jilda DeFrancesco, Ocala, and Antoinette Filippini, Napa, Calif. Viola Cray

JAN. 5, 1919 -- AUG. 2, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Viola Cray, 85, of Woodland Avenue, a nursing assistant at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, N.Y., before her retirement, died Monday at home.

Mrs. Cray was born in Lumber City, Ga., and moved here in 1992 from Rochester. She was a member of Mount Zion C.M.E. Church.

Survivors include three sons, Alfred, New Smyrna Beach, James, Edgewater, and Ellis, San Antonio; a daughter, Ruby Chandler, New Smyrna Beach; two sisters, Bessie Morris, New Smyrna Beach, and Leola Woods, Goulds; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Gainous-Wynn is in charge.

Leota Fisher

JUNE 20, 1918 -- JULY 27, 2004

PALM COAST -- Leota J. Fisher, 86, of Beechwood Lane, a pediatric nurse-practitioner for the Pittsburgh school system before her retirement, died July 27 at Florida Hospital-Flagler.

Mrs. Fisher was born in Butler, Pa., and moved here in 1980 from Pittsburgh. She was a member of St. Mark-by-the-Sea Lutheran Church and 9'ers Pine Harbor Golf Club.

Survivors include two sons, Robert, Palm Coast, and William, Philadelphia; a brother, George Meals, Augusta, Ga.; and five grandchildren. Coastal Cremation is in charge.

Dorothy Greco

JUNE 27, 1923 -- JULY 29, 2004

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Dorothy Leila Ward Greco, 81, of Spokane, a former staff writer in the DeLand bureau of The Daytona Beach News-Journal under the pen name of Dottie Austin, died Sunday at Riverview Care Center.

A 1941 graduate of DeLand High School, Mrs. Greco was born in DeLand, and moved to Spokane in 1984. She worked as a reporter and city editor for the Sanford Herald before starting her 13-year career at the News-Journal in 1966. Writer of a weekly column "Dateline DeLand, " she won many journalistic awards and was named Most Valuable Education Writer by the Volusia Educators Association in 1971. A former organist and Sunday school teacher at Berea Assembly of God in DeLand, Mrs. Greco was a member of Ridgewood Christian Center Church and the Florida Press Club. She also co-authored books, wrote plays, taught piano and worked as a freelance magazine writer.

Survivors include two sons, John Higginbotham, Spokane, and James Higginbotham, Jackson, Miss.; a daughter, Louise Smith, San Diego; two brothers, Gordon "Bud" Ward, Casselberry, and William Ward, Lecanto; a sister, Irene Dreggors, DeBary; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 555 W. Granada Blvd., Suite A-1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. Heritage Funeral Home & Crematory, Spokane, is in charge.

Ted Grisell

JULY 6, 1916 -- JULY 25, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Ted Lewis Grisell, 88, of South Atlantic Avenue, a surgeon for 42 years before his retirement, died July 25 at Sugar Mill Assisted Living Facility.

Dr. Grisell, was born in Fortville, Ind., and moved here in 1994. He served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II and was awarded the Legion of Merit. A former chief of staff at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, Ind., he was a 1939 graduate of Indiana University Medical School. He was a member of Coronado Community United Methodist Church, where he was a Stephen Minister. He was past president of the American Association of Abdominal Surgeons, active in the Indiana State Medical Association, past commander of American Legion Paul Coble Chapter in Indianapolis, 33rd degree Master Mason of the Ancient Scottish Rite and served on the national board of the American Cancer Society. Dr. Grisell also was active at the New Smyrna Beach Golf Course.

Survivors include two sons, Dan, Edgewater, and Ted, Indianapolis; a daughter, Vera Follain-Grisell, Rockville, Md.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 300, Daytona Beach, FL 32119. Dudley, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.
