Joseph J. (Toby) Tobias

Joseph J. (Toby) Tobias, retired US Air Force Staff Sergeant, 83, of Holt, passed away Friday afternoon, August 11, 2000.

He was born in Foreston, MN on August 28, 1916 and had been a resident of Holt, Fla. since 1969.

Mr. Tobias was preceded in death by his wife Jorene in 1999.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, James and Jeri Tobias of Crestview, Fla.; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Gary Woods of Holt, Josephine and Duke Barrow of Milton, Geraldine and Jerome Gibson of Holt, Tracey and Ken Bledsoe of Beulah, and Sylvia McDonald of Pensacola; 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 14 from the chapel of Brackney Funeral Service with Rev. Duke Barrow officiating.

Burial will follow in the Holt cemetery with full military honors.

Brackney Funeral Service, Crestview, was in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie Hall

Mr. Johnnie Hall, age 88, of Crestview, Fla., passed away Saturday, August 12, 2000 in a local nursing home.

Mr. Hall taught elementary education, was principal of Okaley Junior High for three years, principal at Crossroads Junior High for three years, high school coach at Gorgas High for nine years, and principal at Gorgas High for three years.

Mr. Hall ended his career as Supervisor of Secondary Education and Supervisor of Textbooks with the Okaloosa County System.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Dunn Hall of Crestview, Fla.; two sons, Garland Earl Hall of Crestview and Donald Paul Hall of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two brothers, S.L. Hall of Berry, Ala. and Ray Hall of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and a sister, Gladys Hall Dunn of Mobile, Ala.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 14, 2000 at the Whitehurst Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Ray Wilson officiating.

Burial followed at Live Oak Park Memorial Cemetery.

The family requested that donations be made to the Methodist Children Home, P.O. Box 830, Selma, AL 36702-9900 or to your favorite charity.

Whitehurst Funeral Home, Crestview, was in charge of the arrangements.

Lance Milon Yow

Lance Milon Yow, age 51, of Holt, Fla., passed away Saturday, August 12, 2000.

Mr. Yow was born on October 10, 1948 in Crestview, Fla. and was raised in Holt.

He was employed for 28 years with Civil Service at Eglin A.F.B., Fla. as a food service worker.

Mr. Yow was recently honored with the Civilian of the Quarter Award.

He was a spirit-filled man of Christ and a deacon with the Welcome Southern Baptist Church in Crestview.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a corporal during the Vietnam War.

A kind, loving and gentle man, he is survived by his wife Shirley Yow of Holt, two daughters, Evelyn Yow and Lanette White, and a son, Nathan White, all of Crestview.

He is also survived by his daughter in spirit, Kathryn Riester of Bonndorf, Germany; two brothers and their wives, Gene and Carol Spurlin of Louisiana, and Robert Carlton and Molly Yow of Mary Esther; a sister and her husband, Joy and Tony Leake of Baker; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 16 from the Welcome Southern Baptist Church, with Chaplain David Pettis officiating.

Burial will follow in the Old Holt Cemetery.

Brackney Funeral Service, Crestview, was in charge of arrangements.

Tom T. Starkey

Mr. Tom T. Starkey, age 68, died Saturday, August 12, 2000 at an Okaloosa County hospital in Crestview, Fla.

He was a native of Knoxville, TN, but made his home in Florida for the past 33 years.

He was a graduate of Harrison Chilhowee Baptist Academy, then entered the Air Force.

Upon return from the service, he received his degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Mr. Starkey was the owner of Southeastern Engineering Company.

Survivors are his sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Clyde Porterfield, Knoxville; sister, Pat Peebles, Maryville, Tenn.; brother and sister-in-law, Mack and June Starkey, Cullman, Ala.

Pallbearers were Wayne Jones, Dude Adams, Buddy Cox, Charles Castille, Leon Scarborough, and Joe Fellenz.

A time of visitation was held on Wednesday, August 16, with a brief funeral service following.

Burial took place Thursday, August 17 at Live Oak Park Memorial Cemetery.

Whitehurst Funeral Home, Crestview, was in charge of arrangements.

Virgie Rollan

Virgie Rollan passed away Monday, August 14 in a local nursing home.

A memorial service was held Sunday, August 20, 2000 at the nursing home, with a private graveside service held at a later date.

Laurence R. Jahn

Dr. Laurence R. Jahn, age 74, of Vienna, Va., passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at Fairfax Hospital.

He was the beloved husband of Helen F. Jahn, loving father of Katharine M. (Ronald J.) Cook of Custer, WI and Richard A. (Sheila L.) Jahn of Crestview, Fla.; and brother of Audrey Schlender of Lake Mills, WI.

Mr. Jahn was also survived by his grandchildren, Stephanie C. (Lawrence) Armstrong, Elizabeth M. Cook, Jahna M. Cook, Stacy L. (Steve) Bozzay and Bryan (Cristina) Jahn; and great-grandchildren, Marissa K. and Miranda K. Jahn.

A memorial service was held Saturday, August 26, 2000 at the Moravian Church in Lake Mills, WI with another one to be held in the Washington, D.C. area in early November.

Charles L. "Gusto" Freeman

Mr. Charles L. "Gusto" Freeman, Sr., age 68, of Crestview, Fla., died Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at the Crestview Nursing and Convalescent Home.

Mr. Freeman was born on December 15, 1931.

He was a native of Talladega, Ala., but made his home in Florida for the past 39 years.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Angela Freeman, and their children, Wesley and Rebecca, all of Crestview; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Terry Weese, and their son, Drew, all of Atlanta, Ga.

Other family members include his brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Emelyn Freeman of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., brothers, James Freeman of Talladega, and Bob Freeman of Sarasota, Fla., and a sister, Florence Freeman Sanders of Torrence, Calif.

A brief funeral service was conducted Thursday, August 17, 2000 after the visitation period in the chapel of Whitehurst Funeral Home.

Interment took place in the Oak Hill cemetery in Talladega on Friday, August 18.

Honorary pallbearers were Robert Miller, Clardy Noel, George Ansley, Curtis Lackey, Red Brown, Bunky Nabors and George Hicks.

Arrangements and services were directed by Whitehurst Funeral Home, Crestview.
