Sydney Whidden Henderson

Sydney Whidden Henderson, 85, of Lakeland, died Jan. 15, 2004 at Highland Lake Nursing Home in Lakeland.

Born Oct. 12, 1918 in Tampa, she was a lifelong resident of Florida and a descendant of the Whidden and Carton families, who were early settlers of Central Florida.

A self-employed upholsterer for 35 years, she attended the Highland Park Church of the Nazarene.

She is preceded in death by her son, Ben Brock.

She is survived by two sons, Jeff and Bob Brock, both of Lakeland; two daughters, Virgina Schuck of Freeport, Tex.; and Nancy Pierson of Lakeland; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Friday, Jan. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lakeland Funeral Home.

The Funeral: Saturday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. A graveside service will be held at Miakka United Methodist Cemetary in Sarasota.

In leiu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer's Treatment and Research Center, 640 Jackson Street, St. Paul, Minn., 55101.

Eleanor G. H. Meyer

Eleanor G. H. Meyer, 81, of Tallahassee, formerly of Bartow, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Westminster Oaks.

Born Oct. 21, 1922, Mrs. Meyer was a longtime resident of Bartow who moved to Tallahassee three years ago.

She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Bartow, a member of the Pilot Club of Bartow and the Order of the Eastern Star in Bartow, and was a former secretary at Bartow High School and the Polk County Public Defender's Office.

Mrs. Meyer was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Meyer. Survivors include: three sons, Craig Meyer and Hans Meyer, both of Tallahassee, and Douglas Meyer of New York City; one daughter, Rebecca Brewster of Marietta, Ga.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service was held in Tallahassee.

Interment: Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow.

Arrangements: Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow.

Memorial contributions: Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, 32308.

William "Bill" Mackey

William "Bill" Mackey, 76, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at his Winter Haven residence.

Born June 3, 1927, in Newburgh, N. Y., Mr. Mackey moved to Winter Haven from Virginia Beach, Va., 20 years ago.

He was a civilian corrosion control consultant to the U.S. Navy, and a general aviation pilot. He also held an aircraft mechanic A. and P. license.

Mr. Mackey was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Terri Mackey. Survivors include: one step-daughter, Lois Hendrickson of Franklin, N.C.; two step-sons, Richard Haviland and Robert Haviland, both of The Villages, Fla.; one niece, Joan Mackey of New York; one sister-in-law, Gladys LaLumia of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.; four granddaughters, Christine Jacobson of Winter Haven, Michele Frann of Atlanta, Ga., Lisa Haviland of The Villages, Fla., and Jill Haviland of Lakeland; one grandson, Ricky Haviland of Long Island, N.Y.; one great-granddaughter, Sedona Jentsy Fann of Atlanta; and a friend, Vincent Martinez of Virginia.

The funeral: Friday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m., at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow, with Rev. Davis Ramsey officiating.

Bettye Rowell Ouzts

Bettye Rowell Ouzts, 71, formerly of Fort Meade died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in Rockledge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Maggie Rowell of Fort Meade and her brother, James Chester Rowell of Naples.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Ouzts, of Cocoa Beach; a son, Gary Ouzts of Cocoa Beach, a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Dave Marshall of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one granddaughter, Jenny Marshall, also of Colorado Springs; and five sisters, Opal Emington of Louisville, Ky., Ruby Hadley of Blackwell, Okla., Violet Sheffield of Fort Meade, Evelyn First of Naples, Sandra Manley of Bartow, and Joan Stanford of Bay Springs, Miss.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Riviera United Church of Christ in Palm Bay, with burial at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

Ruth Goins Howze

Ruth Goins Howze, 61, of Bartow, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 26, 1943, in Huntsville, Ala., Mrs. Howze moved to Bartow when she was a child.

She was a homemaker and caregiver. She was Baptist.

Mrs. Howze is survived by: her husband, Morris Howze; seven sisters, Martha Hill and Faye Goins, both of Bartow, Bernice Goins, Theresa Bradiner, and Loretta Mereis, all of Winter Haven, Kaye Ewanink of Lakeland, and Ethel Kirchoff of Ocala; and one brother, Kenneth Goins of Locustfork, Ala.

Visitation: Friday, Jan. 30, from noon to 1 p.m., at Seigler Funeral Home in Mulberry.

The funeral: Friday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m., at Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow.

Mary M. Blow

Mary M. Blow, 72, of Bartow, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Bartow Center.

Mrs. Blow was born May 25, 1931, in Blakely, S.C.

She was a Polk County School teacher, and a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Lakeland.

Mrs. Blow was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Percy L. Blow. Survivors include: one niece, Rosa M. Childs of Bartow; two sisters, Beulah Ragland of Bartow and Annie Nelson of Brooklyn; and one brother, George W. Montgomery of Lanes, S.C.

Visitation: Friday, Jan. 30, from 3 to 8 p.m., at Gause Funeral Home in Bartow.

The funeral: Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m., at First Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 1030 West King Street in Bartow.

Interment: Wildwood Cemetery, Bartow.

Ann Matthews Crews

Ann Matthews Crews, 61, of Augusta, Ga., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Crews lived in Augusta since 1961.

She was a member of the Bible Cathedral. She worked as a dental assistant with Dr. Michael Rogers for the past 27 years.

Mrs. Crews is survived by: her husband of 43 years, Lee Edward Crews; her mother, Myrtle Frances Matthews of Fort Meade; one daughter, Della Cruse (and Rick) Sikes of Evans; three sons, Norman Richard (and Angie) Crews of North Augusta, John Matthew (and Angie) Crews of Grovetown, and Paul Edward Crews of Augusta; two sisters, Rhonda Sue Gregg of Jonesboro, Ark., and Darla Renee Townsend of Fort Meade; four brothers, Chuck Winfield Matthews, Norman Phelps Matthews, Paul Wayne Matthews, and Dale Edward Matthews, all of Fort Meade; two granddaughters and eight grandsons.

Visitation: Friday, Jan. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Home in Augusta.

The funeral: Saturday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m., at the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Jack Custer and Rev. Ralph Summerlin officiating. Pallbearers will be Michael Rogers, Richard Mertins, David Buckner, Jim Swift, Chuck Fitzgerald, and John North.

Memorial contributions: American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 1725, Augusta, Ga., 30901.
