CHARLES WAYNE POLK
Mr. Charles Wayne "C.W." Polk, retired captain with the Bay County Sheriff's Office, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, in a local hospital after an extended illness. Born in Jeff Davis County, Miss., he moved to Panama City in 1967 from Bassfield, Miss. Mr. Polk retired as captain from the Sheriff's Office after 17 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Andrew's Baptist Church where he was a deacon and director of the Adult III Sunday school department. Mr. Polk also worked with the crisis center of St. Andrew's Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Polk of Panama City; two sons, Charles W. Polk II and wife, Becky, and Shane Polk, all of Panama City; one daughter, Nicole Everitt and husband, Joe, of Panama City; one brother, Jimmy Polk and wife, Evelyn, of Hazelhurst, Miss.; two sisters, Nettie Polk of Pensacola and Ann Davis of Bassfield, Miss.; and two grandchildren, Jessica Polk and Justin Polk. Funeral services for Mr. Polk will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew's Baptist Church with Dr. Dewey Davidson officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with full deputy honors. The Bay County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard will serve as active pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers will be members of the Lighthouse Tenders Sunday school class from St. Andrew's Baptist Church. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Andrew's Baptist Church Building Fund in memory of Mr. C.W. Polk.

CHARLES G. ROBERTS
Retired Sgt. Maj. Charles G. Roberts, 78, of Columbus, Ga., died Wednesday, Jan. 16, in Albany, Ga. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in Evergreen Memory Gardens, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road, Columbus, Ga. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. SGM Roberts was born June 14, 1923, in Bloomingburg, Ohio, the son of John M. and Cora Belle Davis Roberts. He had lived in Columbus for the past 27 years and was a member of Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Roberts retired from the U.S. Army in April 1975 after 32 years of service, serving during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He received numerous awards and medals including three Bronze Stars, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), Korean Service Medal with Bronze and Silver Stars, Meritorious Service Medal with/lOLC. Survivors include his wife, Marion Wells Roberts of Columbus; a daughter, Paula Aline Strickland of Fountain; a brother, Don F. Roberts of Speedway, Ind.; a sister, Geraldine King of Ojai, Calif.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church, Building Fund.

LOUISE NORMAN SMITH
Louise Norman Smith passed away in Birmingham, Ala., on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Betty Gilbert. This lovely centenarian was born Jan. 24, 1900, in Montgomery, Ala., and moved to Panama City in 1939 from Pensacola. She was a homemaker, dedicated to her husband and children. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.N. Smith, owner of Van Kleeck Company; her oldest son, Norman A. Smith; and a son-in-law, Hiram Gilbert. She is survived by a son, Judge Larry G. Smith and wife Emmalyn; a daughter, Martha Finch and husband, Mack, all of Panama City, and her daughter, Betty Gilbert of Birmingham. She was proud of her 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, and could tell you the birthday of each of them up until a few weeks ago. The grandchildren are: Norman A. Smith Jr. and wife Joyce, Gary A. Smith, Donna Burk and husband Scott, and Cynthia Smith, all of Panama City; Glenn Smith and wife Gay of Gulf Breeze; Celia Rudolph and husband Roy of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; Barbara Finch of Chipley, and Dallas Finch and wife Marcia of Wichita, Kan.; Greg Gilbert and wife Kathy, Nathan Gilbert, Paul Gilbert and wife Rhonda of Birmingham. The great-grandchildren are: Norman A. Smith III, Carrie Cain and husband Jeff; Will, Matthew, and Julie Smith; Lindsey and Cameron Smith; Rory, Glenn and Joseph Rudolph; Jeffrey Burk; Joe and Jennifer Gilbert; Andrew, Baily and Riley Gilbert; and one great-great-grandson, Kenan Cain. Funeral services will be held at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. Family visitation will be Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Those who wish may contribute to First United Methodist Church in memory of Mrs. Smith.

VERNON WADE TODD
Mr. Vernon Wade Todd, 53, of 2752 Altha Ave., Panama City, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Panama City. Mr. Todd was a member of Springfield Community Church and the Sunday school superintendent. He was employed with Professional Windows as contract manager and was a graduate of Rutherford High School and Gulf Coast Community College. Mr. Todd is survived by his wife, Eloise Hunt Todd of Panama City; two daughters, Kara Gay Taunton and her husband, Monroe, of Southport and Misty Shelea Byrd and her husband, Allen, of Panama City; mother, Nora Elizabeth Todd of Panama City; four grandchildren, Leeah Taunton and Sara Taunton of Southport, Karissa Russ and Kassy Byrd of Panama City; one brother, William Lee Todd and his wife, Shirley, of Panama City; and a mother-in-law, Velma Hunt of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his father, Hubert Todd; and father-in-law, the Rev. J.W. Hunt. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Springfield Community Church with the Rev. John Hunt and the Rev. Ms. Nancy Luke officiating. Entombment will follow at the Garden of Memories. Active pallbearers will be Clay Baxley, Alfred Kirvin Jr., John Gibbs, Brandon Davis, Brett Davis and Beau Ludlam. The family will receive friends today, Jan. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m.

ERNEST N. BROWN
Ernest N. Brown, 89, of 431 S. Berthe Ave., Panama City, died Jan. 20, 2002, in a local nursing home. He was a retired stevedore for the Ryan Corporation. He had been a lifelong resident of Bay County and was a member of Callaway Assembly of God Church. He is survived by his wife, Laura Allan Brown of Panama City; two daughters, Laura Jane Warren and husband, David S. Warren, Carol B. Smith and husband, James Smith, all of Panama City; son, Artemus D. Brown and wife, Deanna Brown, of Dumfries, Va.; four grandchildren, Reggie Warren and wife, Lisa Warren, of Panama City, Ernest Adrian Warren of Panama City Beach, Keith Allan Brown and wife, Lineth, and Renee' Brown, all of Woodbridge, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Rodger, Ryan, Tyler and Hunter; sisters, Mizelle Ritchie of Mobile, Myron Davis of Panama City, Sarah Alice Harris of Panama City; sister-in-law, Rosa Brown, wife of the late Edward Brown; and son-in-law, Jack O'Connell. Funeral services are incomplete at this time.

MARQUERITE McLEAN HOLLIS
Marquerite McLean Hollis, 82, of 4521 Misty Lane, Lynn Haven, died Jan. 19, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and a seamstress. She had been a resident since 1941, moving here from Samson, Ala. She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, John R. Hollis. She is survived by a son, William A. Hollis (Buster) and wife, Marty, of Lynn Haven; two daughters, June Taylor of Panama City and Johnnie Moseley and husband, Thomas, of Montgomery, Ala.; six grandchildren, Gene Taylor and wife, Gerri, of Panama City, Beth Clensey and husband, Ron, of Columbus, Ohio, Jan Denney of Panama City, Thomas P. Moseley and wife, Vicky, of Davidson, N.C., Scott Hollis and wife, Inga, of Panama City, Holly Knight and husband, Shawn, of Acworth, Ga.; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Jeanette Rushing of Ponce de Leon, Fla.; brother, James McLean of Cross City, Fla.; sister-in-law, Christine McLean of St. George Island, Fla.; and a special companion and friend, Hazel Griffin. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Lucas Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. RITA CAMPBELL PARK
Rita Campbell Park, 96, of Panama City, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. James A. Park, who had been a Baptist minister for 65 years. They were married for 57 years. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Bettie Ray; and a sister, Christina Hickman. She is survived by a son-in-law, Emory Ray; two granddaughters, Sandra L. Burleson and her husband, Joe, Patricia Ray; and two great-grandchildren, Heather Laine Burleson and Joe Ben Burleson Jr., all of Panama City. Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Joe Burleson officiating. Those desiring to may make a contribution to the Gulf Coast Community College Foundation or your favorite charity in memory of Rita Campbell Park.
