Rufus “Buck” Collins, 92

Rufus “Buck” Collins, 92, of Cobbtown died Monday, August 27, 2007, at his home. He had lived in Tattnall County most of his life and was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation. Buck loved fishing and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Eva Collins and a son - in - law, Mel Mock.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eva Mae Hendrix Collins; three sons, James R. “Buddy” Collins (Melita), Danny Ray Collins (Debra) and Larry Dean Collins (Betty Jo), all of Cobbtown; four daughters, Mary Alice Fields (Homer) of Normantown, Virginia “Jenkie” Hart (James) of Statesboro, Mary Sue Collins of Cobbtown and Willette Mock of Rocky Ford; two brothers, Bill Collins of Marietta and Robert Collins of Atlanta; a sister, Tera Bell McGowan of Atlanta; 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and two great - great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at the Cobbtown Baptist Church with Reverend Walter Leveritt and Reverend K.C. Seabury officiating. Burial followed in the Sunlight Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Remembrances may be made to the Cobbtown Baptist Church, POB 176, Cobbtown, GA 30420.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Oswell “R.O.” Kimbrell, 85

Mr. Robert Oswell “R.O.” Kimbrell, 85, passed away early Sunday morning, August 26, 2007, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center. A native of Pierce County, he had lived here most of his life, except for when he served his country in the Merchant Marines. Mr. Kimbrell had farmed for 57 years. He was the chairman of the Advisory Board for the RYDC, was the president of the Forest Owners Association and was the director for Pierce County on the Satilla Soil and Water Conservation Board. Mr. Kimbrell was a member of the Mershon Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was a member/teacher of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He had 47 years of perfect attendance in Sunday School. Mr. Kimbrell was a son of the late Charlie K. and Mary Elizabeth “Mamie” Dowling Kimbrell and was also preceded in death by a sister, Birdie Ariel Kimbrell and a brother, Foy Kimbrell.
Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Clara Crawford Kimbrell of Mershon; daughter, Cheryl Mobley of Mershon; three sons and daughters - in - law, Bob and Linda Kimbrell and Dr. Casey “Charlie” and Tammy Kimbrell all of Mershon and Reverend Steve and Regis Kimbrell of Reidsville; three foster sisters, Ruby Rawls of Tennessee, Louise Druhl of Atlanta and Rose Lee Calhoun of Waycross; nine grandchildren, Paula Mobley, Cretia Ponsell, Anitra (Stevie) Young, Karissa Kimbrell, Alyson Kimbrell, Jessica Kimbrell, Casey Kimbrell, Jr., Christopher Kimbrell and MariClaire Kimbrell; two great - grandchildren, Taylor Hale and Dock Allen and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at Mershon Baptist Church. Private entombment followed in the Bristol Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Mershon Baptist Church, 1771 Mershon Rd., Mershon, GA 31551.
The deacons of Mershon Baptist Church were asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.

Charles E. McNear, 68

Charles E. McNear, 68, died Monday, August 27, 2007, in Savannah.
Mr. McNear was born in Odum, Georgia, the son of the late Woodrow and Tommie McNear. He retired from National Gypsum after twenty - five years in Mechanical Maintenance. After his retirement he continued working as a self employed Dry Cleaning Equipment Repairman for fifteen years. Charles enjoyed many years as a Scout Leader for Troop 1 in Savannah.
Mr. McNear was preceded in death by his son who died in October, 2003, Eric McNear and his brother, Phillip McNear. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Deloris McNear; daughter, Lisa Ridgdill and her husband Ben of Bloomingdale; sister, Carolyn McNear of Rincon; brother, Mackie McNear and his wife Joyce of Oklahoma City, OK; sister - in - law, Mary McNear of Pembroke; father and mother - in - law, Lewis and Elise Frawley of Savannah; sister - in - law, Barbara Coley of Savannah and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Memorial Service: 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 30 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel

Truett Purvis, 82

Truett Purvis, 82, passed away Monday, August 27, 2007, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life. He was a World War II veteran, a retired farmer and school bus driver with the Tattnall County Board of Education for over 18 years. He attended Mendes Baptist Church and Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Faye Purvis Anderson and a son - in - law, Alan Purcell.
He is survived by his wife, Irma Holland Purvis of Glennville; daughters and sons - in - law, Patsy Purcell, Linda and Randy Bradley and Royce Anderson all of Glennville; sister, Betty Thomas of Savannah; brothers and sisters - in - law, Theus and Gloria Purvis and Carol and Brenda Purvis all of Glennville; grandchildren, Alana and Timmy Waters, Walt and Wes Purcell, Lawrence and Lance Bradley, Alexis Anderson; step - grandchildren, Renee Dixon and Ron Anderson; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Bernard Purvis, Randy Purvis, Jerrell Purvis, Fred Purvis, Roy Purvis, Jerry Purvis.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 30, 2007, at the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Carl Ledbetter and Elder Tom Deal officiating. Burial will follow in Mendes Baptist Church Cemetery.

Marcus M. Sands, 86

Marcus M. Sands, 86, passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at his residence under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area most of his life. He was retired from Union Camp Corporation as District Forest Land Supervisor. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of Glennville Free Will Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Isabel Welborn Sands of Glennville; a son, Tom Sands of Atlanta; stepsons, Ronald Robinson (Jeaneine) of Hinesville and Fleming Robinson (Carolyn) of Columbus; caretaker, Edna Collins and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 24, 2007, at the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Oscar Rowe Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Martin O’Donnell, David Medlock, Adair Branch, Jerry Branch, Mike Durrence.

Joan Bacon White, 86

Joan Bacon White, 86, died Thursday, August 23, 2007, at home in Glennville, GA. The Tattnall County native began her career as an educator at the age of 17. She was a long time resident of Emanuel County, where she was Supervisor of Instruction for the Emanuel County School System for more than 25 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Dennis White and sisters, Opal Kany and Barbara Grinstead.
She is survived by a son, Dennis Bacon White of Glennville; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 25, 2007, at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Vance Riggins officiating. Burial followed in Beard’s Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jonathon D. Kany, Jonathon D. Kany III, Phill Hiltbrunner, Ben Shuman, John Shuman, Mark Shuman and Grover Hankins.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles Henry Berry, 75

The sun rose early in the morning on November 4, 1931. A baby boy was born, by the name of Charles Henry Berry to the late Jasper and Georgia Berry. Later in age he married Patricia Coley Berry on February 27, 1955. Three children preceded him in death, Janet, Marquette and Gwinnette. Five sisters and two brothers also preceded him in death. Then the sun set at 10:00 a.m. on Charles H. Berry, 75, Sunday, August 19, 2007, at Glenvue Nursing Home, by God’s orders.
Charles leaves to cherish his memories. His wife of 52 years, Patricia Berry; four daughters, Patricia Annette (Sylvester) Lovett and Verdie Cooper, both of Glennville, Pennie Lee Berry and Bridgett Antoinette Berry of Hinesville; three sons, James Fredrick Berry of Emanuel County, Charles Anthony Berry of Mt. Vernon, GA, and Richard Levon Berry of Glennville; one foster son, LaNorris (Maxzine) Coley of Reidsville; 13 grandchildren, Drexel, Delwin, Derrick, Mathew, Marquette L., Anthony T. Antonio, Meshia, ChaRhonda, Christopher, Faye, Ann and Chris; 16 great - grandchildren; five great - great - grandchildren; one sister, Nancy Usry of Miami, FL; two sisters - in - law, Anna Laura Berry and Yvonne Primous; two brothers - in - law, Calvin Sharpe and Robert Primous; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and two close friends and neighbors, Joe Welcome and Sara Johnson.
Wake service will be Friday, August 24, 2007, from 6 - 8 p.m. at Greater Zachariah Baptist Church. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 25, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Greater Zachariah Missionary Baptist Church in Glennville. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. John Elton Grooms, 74

John Elton Grooms, 74, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a former member of the Georgia National Guard and a retired masonry contractor in the building construction industry.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Blocker Grooms of Glennville; sons and daughters - in - law, Brian and Julie Grooms of Dublin and Jason and Jennifer Grooms of Brooklet; sister, Marlene Deal of Bloomingdale; brother, Jimmy Grooms of Claxton; grandchildren, David and Dori Grooms, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 20, 2007, from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Knight officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Timothy Bland, Matt Terrell, Rodney DeLoach, Mark Brewton, Jonathan Dutton and Chris Blocker.

James Franklin Hendrix, 70

Mr. James Franklin Hendrix, 70, died suddenly at his residence on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. He was a native of Bulloch County, but had lived in Glennville over 30 years. He was a mechanic by trade, loved to watch the Braves, was an avid fisherman, and loved his church. He was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church of Glennville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Hendrix and Ann Howell, and a brother, William Aubrey “Bill” Hendrix.
Survivors include a son, James Mark Hendrix of Ft. Myers, FL; ex wife, Eleanor Hendrix of Ft. Myers, FL; two step - daughters, Linda Jaffrey and husband, Joel of Baxley and Barbara Barttlet of Bokeelia, FL; three sisters, Pat Abbott, Debra Baker and Linda Williams, all of Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on August 18, 2007, at the Chapel of Carters Funeral Home with Reverend James Holland officiating. Interment followed in the Love’s Chapel Church cemetery in Glennville.
Carter Funeral Chapel of Glennville was in charge of the arrangements.
