JoAnn Greer Tanner
Anita "Joann" Tanner, age 57 of Monroe, died on September 26, 2016. Joann was a loving mother and wife. Her two daughters, Kayla and Ashley, and her husband, Richard were her life. Joann, the daughter of the late William "Billy" Greer and the late Sarah Sims Greer was born on August 17, 1959 in Monroe, GA. As a child she attended Walton County Schools where she came back to teach for 33 years after attending the University of Georgia and Walden University. Joann had obtained her Bachelor, Masters, and Specialist degrees. She was a devoted teacher who cared for and loved every student who passed through her classroom. Joann definitely touched many lives. Joann attended Mount Vernon Christian Church as a child and into adulthood. She had been attending Harmony Baptist Church with her family. Joann had a love for life with so many interests, including her passion for reading and love of animals, plants, and nature. She was preceded in the death by two cousins; the late Patricia Wiles and the late Gerald Miller; and mother in law, Nell Tanner. Surviving members of her family are; husband, Richard Tanner; daughters, Kayla and Ashley Tanner of Monroe, GA; cousins and their spouse, Bobby and Carol Smith of Monroe, GA, Gail and Douglas Dobbs of Monroe, GA, Ulene and Steve Connelly of Monroe, GA; sister in law and brother in law, Carol and Phillip Buttram; brother in law, Wayne Tanner, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Harmony Baptist Church. Interment followed at Mount Vernon Christian Church Cemetery. Joann's beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her two beautiful daughters, husband, family, and her multitude of friends. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Floyd Carter
Floyd Carter went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 19, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Sherry Carter of Bowman, GA; sons and daughters in law, T.J. and Andrina from Monroe, GA, B.J. and Dana from Elberton, GA; son, David from Pearland, TX; sister, Gina Massey from Monroe, GA; grandchildren, Elijah, London, Mason, Daisy, and Rebecca; Mother in Law, Jeanette Payne from Buena Vista, GA. Floyd was born January 17, 1967 in Monroe, Georgia, to the late Sandra Grindle Carter and the late William Lewis Carter. He worked hard his whole life in the construction business and in the business of raising a family in the presence of the Lord. A celebration of Floyd's life was held on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home in Monroe, GA. Interment followed at Hill Haven Memory Gardens also located in Monroe, GA. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. of Monroe is in charge of arrangements.

Helena Chamberlain
Helena Chamberlain, age 78, of Boca Raton, FL, died on September 8, 2016. She was born in Hartford, CT on March 5, 1938 to the late Vendla Vogel and the late Fredrick Vogel. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late David R. Chamberlain. Surviving are: daughter, Susan Kirk of Social Circle, GA; son and daughter in law, David R. Chamberlain, Jr. and Tina Chamberlain of Merrimack, NH; and grandchildren, David Richard Chamberlain, III, and Matthew Chamberlain. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 11: 00 am at Rutledge United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Byrd officiating. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Dot Cleaton
Dorothy Ann (Dot) Cleaton, age 85, of Monroe, died on September 6, 2016. She was born in Walton County on April 28, 1931, to the late Estelle Quarterman Baccus and the late James Ethridge Baccus. She was preceded in death by her brother, the late James Lewis Baccus, and her ex-husband Mell Cleaton. She is survived by her children: Bonnie and Brett Grandy of Salt Lake City, Utah; Dotti Connell and Lynn Thomas of Bogart; grandchildren: Paul and Teresa Grandy of Salt Lake City, Utah; David Grandy and Carol Sadanala of Brooklyn, New York; Sara Grandy and Noah MacGillivray of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Eli and Ashley Connell of Monroe, and great-grandchildren: Avery and Marley Connell. Although primarily a mother, wife and homemaker, Dot held various jobs in her life, including Harbor Provisions, the Walton Tribune, Sears, Melinda's Restaurant, and Century 21. Dot lived a very active life; she enjoyed gardening, water-skiing, dancing, card games, and most of all, following and supporting her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She did her best to stay involved in all their activities - from birthday parties, to following Bonnie's and Dotti's Girls Corps events, all of Eli's sports activities, and even Avery's and Marley's soccer games. She made frequent trips when she was able to Salt Lake City to visit Bonnie, Brett, Paul, David, and Sara, and did her best to get them back to Georgia as often as possible for family gatherings at her house or the lake, including the last family gathering just this past July. Dot was active in various church groups during her lifetime. She attended First Baptist in Monroe, Monroe Outreach, and more recently Now House Ministries at Great Oaks. Dot's later years were spent at her home on Reece Street, spending time with her friends, especially her dearest friend Shirley Breedlove, and getting by with help from her special caregivers, Bessie, Donna, and Rosie. Her last two years were spent at Great Oaks, where she enjoyed the many activities with her friends there, accompanied by her loving friend and caregiver, Shirl. Dot was a fun-loving woman who loved life and lived her life by her favorite quote: "Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all." She was loved and will be missed by many. A funeral service was held on Friday, September 9, 2016 in the Chapel Of Meadows Funeral Home with James Macie, and Pastor Ben Evans officiating. Interment followed at Resthaven Cemetery. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Moore
Virginia Garrett Moore, age 85, passed away on October 27, 2016 in Macon, Georgia. She was born in Monroe, GA on June, 10, 1931 to Perry and Lucille Garrett. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, John F. Moore. Virginia is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Donald Moore of Macon, GA; sister Barbara (Bobbie) Garrett Briscoe of Monroe; sister and brother-in-law, Perry Nell and John Sorrells of Monroe, GA; and her brother and sister-in-law Thomas (Tommy) and Katie Garrett of Newnan, GA; grandchildren and their spouses, Bradley Lewis Moore and Lea of Birmingham, AL and Meredith Moore McKenzie and Collier of Macon, GA; five great-grandsons; and eight nieces and nephews. Virginia and John F. owned Moore's Grocery on North Madison Avenue in Monroe for 46 years. Virginia moved to Macon 4 years ago to be near her family. She was dearly loved by her grandchildren and great grandsons. They brought her much joy and were the light of her life. She was a member of Monroe First United Methodist Church. Virginia will be greatly missed by all that knew her. The service to celebrate Virginia's life will be held at Meadows Funeral Home in Monroe, GA on Monday, October 31, 2016. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm with the Funeral Service to follow at 2:00 pm time. A graveside service will follow at Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests making donations to Monroe First United Methodist Church at 400 South Broad St. Monroe, GA 30655.

John Spence
John William Spence, age 76 of Monroe, died on October 27, 2016. John was survived by his spouse, Annabelle Spence; daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Joseph Hawes of Monroe, GA; Son and Daughter-In-Law, Byron and Brittany Spence of Hoschton, GA; four wonderful grandchildren, Sara and Spencer Hawes, Brecken and Blair Spence. John, the son of the late Troy Spence and Winnie Davis Spence was born on July 31, 1940 in Atlanta, GA. Raised in Dekalb County John became a well known citizen of Walton County. After moving to Monroe in the 1960's he met Annabelle Blackmon and they began their life together. He graduated from the University of Georgia and Woodrow Wilson Law School and established a successful law practice in Monroe. As an active member of the community he served as the county attorney, was in the Rotary Club, a deacon at Walker Baptist Church, and a consistent member of Pot Luck Cafe's round table. In addition to loving his family, traveling to all 50 states, and telling jokes, John was a die hard Georgia football fan. As a season ticket holder since the late 60's he could often be found screaming for the Dawgs Between the Hedges. A funeral service was held on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Monroe with the Dr. Todd Ware, Dr. Harris Malcom, and Rev. Brian Malcom officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery. The family is accepting flowers, but in lieu of flowers donations to the First Baptist Church of Monroe Youth Ministry in John Spence's name can be made. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Gertrude Witcher
Alma "Gertrude" Witcher Alma "Gertrude" Rowe Witcher, age 89, of Monroe, died on October 27, 2016. She was born in Walton County on January 17, 1927 to the late Lucy Mae Davis Rowe and the late Rev. John B. Rowe. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Grady Coleman Witcher, Sr. She was baptized in 1943, and was a long time member of Double Springs Baptist Church. She is survived by her children, Coleman and Cindy Witcher of Monroe, John Witcher and Mukaddas Arzikulova of Monroe, Marla Rea and George Anthony of Loganville, Lynn and Michelle Witcher of Loganville; grandchildren, Kim Carroll, Paula Brogdon, Benjamin Witcher, Jonathan Witcher, Timothy Witcher; great grandchildren, Will Carroll, Jessica Brogdon, Sierra Brogdon; and caregiver and loving friend, Michelle Vinson. A funeral service was held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 3:00 pm at Double Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Broadnax, Rev. Scott Richardson, Jonathan Witcher, and Jimmy Glaze officiating. Interment followed at Double Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

A.B. Alexander
Aubrey Burrell "A.B." Alexander, age 88 of Monroe, died on October 24, 2016. A.B. was survived by his spouse, Betty Alexander; daughter, Patti Boswell of Conyers, GA; Daughters and Sons-In-Law, Jan and Matt Tierney of Gainesville, GA, Joy and Lamar Hester of Oxford, GA; three wonderful granddaughters, six handsome grandsons, twenty-one beautiful grandchildren, and three perfect great great grandchildren. A.B., the son of the late Henry Grady Alexander and Myrtle Hutchinson Alexander was born on December 21, 1927 in Union City, GA. He served his country in the United States Army and was a firefighter for the city of Atlanta for 35 years. A funeral service was held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 11:00 am at Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Conner officiating. Entombment followed at ill Haven Memory Gardens. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Cameron Brown
Edward Cameron Brown, age 21, of Monroe, died on October 23, 2016. He was born in Clarke County on August 9, 1995 to Kimberly Barton Brown and Edward Brandon Brown. He was preceded in death by his brother, the late Jonathan Cohen Brown. He is survived by his parents, Brandon and Kim Brown of Monroe; brother, Chase Brown of Monroe; grandparents, Brad and Becky Barton of Monroe, Frank and Marcia Young of Monroe; great grandparents, Mary Barton of Monroe, Toni Jordan of Monroe. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 12:00 pm at the Monroe Church of God with Rev. Wayne Durden and Rev. Gary Scroggs officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Chase Brown College Fund in care of Athens First Bank and Trust. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Essie Lou McCullers
Essie Lou McCullers Essie Lou McCullers, age 84, of Monroe, died on October 21, 2016. She was born in Jackson County to the late Arline Garrett Wallace and the late Lee Wallace. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Eugene Lee McCullers. She is survived by her daughters and son in law, Tracey McCullers of Monroe, Kathy and Jerry Miller of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; son, Buster McCullers of Monroe; sister Betty Sims of Winder; brother Henry Wallace of Bethlehem; and grandchildren, Gunner and Shelby. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Conner officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Memory Gardens. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Cox
Donald Ray Cox, age 69, of Monroe, died on October 21, 2016. He was born in Daytona, FL on June 25, 1947 to the late Etta Herndon Cox and the late Charlie E. Cox. He was preceded in death by his son, the late Brad Cox; his sisters, the late Lillian Gladney and the late Eva McDaniel. He is survived by his wife, Debbie of Monroe; son, Casey Cox of Monroe, daughter and son in law, Beverly and Mike Donawho of Texas; sisters and brother-in-law; Frances Lewis of Cordele, Doris and J.L. Bundrick of Cordele, and Ruby Maffee of Cordele; grandchildren, Brittany Cox and Jasper Cox; with several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Alcovy Mountain Baptist Church, and the Sons of the American Legend Post 64. He was a diehard Georgia Bulldogs fan, and he loved watching Nascar, especially Bill Elliott. A funeral service was held on, October 24, 2016, at 2:00 pm at The Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Pastor Hughlon Knight and Rev. John King officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Memory Gardens. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Park Adams Wright
Park Adams Wright, age 90 of Monroe, died on October 22, 2016. He was born on March 22, 1926 in Monroe to the late Jim Bennie Wright and the late Maybelle Witcher Wright. Surviving are: Wife, Lorena Peters Wright of Monroe; Daughters: Tammy Wright of Monroe, Melissa Ryckley of Fayetteville; Sons and Daughters in Law: Butch and Cynthia Wright of Taylorsville, Phil Wright of Atlanta, and Jeff Wright of Auburn; Numerous Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and Great Great Grandchildren. Funeral Services were held on Monday October 24th at 11:00 AM at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Conner officiating. Interment followed at Center Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Polly Hendricks
Polly Payne Hendricks, age 61, of Monroe, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends on October 18, 2016. She was born in May 11, 1955 to the late Martha Sims Payne and the late James William Payne, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Meagan Hendricks of Monroe; son, Jim Hendricks of Monroe; and brother, Jimmy Payne of St. Simons. A visitation and memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Meadows Funeral Home. The visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm and the Service will begin at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Rev. Dean Gross officiating. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Vanna Kathleen Johnson
Kathleen E. Johnson went to be with her heavenly father on October 15, 2016. She was 95 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Roland T. Johnson, sons, James L. Harris, Carl V. Harris, Stepdaughter Susan Turner, Stepsons, Terrell O. Johnson, Mitchell Johnson and Wayne Johnson. She is survived by her son, Mack G. Harris, daughters Eula Jennings, Alma Armfield and Glenda Brock; stepchildren, Joyce Morris, Mary Carlton, Melvin Johnson and Jeanette Story. She also had numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews. She was loved by so many people. Viewing will be on Monday, October 17th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Meadows Funeral Home, 760 Highway 11. Services will be October 18th at 2:00 pm in their chapel.

Marvin "Buddy" Glass
Marvin Hulon Glass passed away on October 13th 2016 at 81 years of age. Preceding him in death was his wife Jimmie Lee Norman Glass, four brothers, Grover, Douglas, Ralph, Herschel Glass and three sisters Leona Glass Batchelor, Frances Glass Walden and Ruth Glass Malcom. Buddy is survived by his son Keith and daughter-in-law Kathy Glass, granddaughters Kristin, Courtney, Ashely Glass Barry and her husband Chris Barry. Also surviving is his sister Betty Glass Tanksley and her husband Tony Tanksley of Monroe, Georgia. Affectionately known as "Buddy", a man small in stature, but large in heart and in service to others. A grandfather, father, husband, friend, teacher, coach, leader, he was many things to many people. He coached little league and pony league baseball, youth football, and served as a Scout Master. It was said that Buddy had saved several "South Side Boys" from travelling down the wrong road. He and Jimmie Lee opened their home to Oliver Schmidt an exchange student from Venezuela. Buddy was very involved at Walker Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, a deacon, choir member and was involved with the church youth. If there was anything going on he was there. He was a member of Toastmasters and Gideon's International. Buddy was very active at Masonic Lodge # 566 and secured his Masters Mason in March 1992. He progressed to Worshipful Master in 1996. High Priest in 1998 (Royal Arch Monroe Chapter # 101). Illustrious Master in 2001 (Royal and Select Master Triangle Council #14) and attained the title of Master of the 8th Masonic District Worshipful Master in 2005. He received the Past Master award in 2007. His career at Walton Mills started in 1954, there he worked as a Doffer, Supervisor and Department Head. He served in the Georgia Army National Guard, retiring as a Staff Sergeant after 26 years of service. A gifted storyteller, his tells of Briar Rabbit were spell bounding as he imitated each charter of the story, keeping many children and adults at the edge of their seat waiting on the next adventure to unfold. The love of grandchildren was his hobby and he was rewarded well with three granddaughters whom he doted on, Poppa Buddy will greatly missed by all that knew him and loved him. Internment was made on October 15th, 2016 at Resthaven cemetery following the service at Walker Baptist Church with Reverend Chris Conner officiating. The service included full Military honors and Masonic last rites.

James Lawton Morgan
James Lawton Morgan went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by both his brothers, the late Julius Morgan and the late Doug Morgan. Lawton was born June 5, 1936 in Canton, Georgia, to the late Effie Smithwick Morgan and the late James Morgan. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Morgan; daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Patrick Gasaway from Jersey, GA, Tracey and Glenn Brown from Jersey, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Whitney Morgan from Jersey, GA; sisters, Margaret Davis of Jersey, GA, Charlotte Kirby from Zebulon, GA; grandchildren; Amy Gasaway Buck, Jim Gasaway, Seth Brown, Caleb Brown, Kelly Starinsky, Merry Beth Johnson, Phillip Morgan, Anne Marie Morgan and three loving Great Grandchildren. A funeral service was held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 14, 2016 at Alcovy Mountain Baptist Church in Jersey, GA. Interment followed at Alcovy Mountain Baptist Cemetery.
