Ruby Hester
Mrs. Ruby Hester, 87, of 2840 Hammett Road died Friday at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mrs. Hester, born May 15, 1915, in Lafayette, Ala., was the daughter of the late William Jackson and Catherine Todd Foster. She lived here most her life and was a member of Springhill Baptist Church. She was retired from the Hillside Plant of Callaway Mills Co.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Hester; three daughters and a son - in - law, Betty Jean Hester, Irene Langley and Glenda and Sarge Dudley, all of LaGrange; four grandchildren, Pam Coleman, Kelly Jones, Valerie D. Hunt and Patrick Dudley; six great - grandchildren and a great - great - granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hunter - Allen - Myhand Chapel with the Revs. Milton Whitlock and Scotty Fowler officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
The family will be at their home at 2840 Hammett Road and will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. today. Flowers are accepted.
Hunter - Allen - Myhand Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeanette Welborn
Mrs. Jeannette Welborn, 79, of 2111 West Point Road, died Friday at the Brian Center Nursing Care.
Mrs. Welborn, born Feb. 15, 1923 in Rock Mills, Ala., was the daughter of the late Grady and Ethyl Meachum Bailey. She was a member of Southwest Baptist Church and was retired from Milliken and Company. Her favorite hobbies included baking, sewing, and attending to her garden.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Welborn; two sons and a daughter - in - law, Jim Welborn and Stan and Patti Welborn, all of LaGrange; granddaughter, Nicole McManus; great - granddaughter, Madison Aldridge; three sisters, Mrs. Marie Bradley, and Mrs. Barnelle Nix, both of Rock Mills, Ala., and Patricia Willowby, of Acworth; four brothers, Durward Bailey, Quinton Bailey, Junior Bailey, and Douglas Bailey, all of Rock Mills, Ala. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Aubrey H. Welborn, who died July 16, 1998; and two sisters, Marjorie Reeves and Ruth Mickle of Roanoke, Ala.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Hunter - Allen - Myhand Funeral Home with the Revs. Wayne Hester and Fred Buchanan officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
The family will be at the home of her son and daughter - in - law, Stan and Patti Welborn, 654 Newton Road and will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Mrs. Welborn.

Mrs. Laura M. Smith
Mrs. Laura Mitchell Smith, 99, of 202 Willow St., Thomaston, died Nov. 8 at Upson Regional Medical Center in Thomaston. Mrs. Smith, born June 24, 1903 in Ashland, Tenn., was the daughter of the late Emma Myrtle Shearon Mitchell and George Washington Mitchell. She was a bookstore clerk at the Christian Bookstore.
Mrs. Smith was a native of Ashland, Tenn., but moved to Thomaston in 1916. She was a graduate of R.E. Lee Institute, Mrs. Smith lived in LaGrange for 45 years, during which time she was employed by Callaway Mills. She was later an office employee of B.F. Goodrich, Martha Mills in Thomaston and was a member of The First Baptist Church and enjoyed small children.
Survivors include a step - daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Bray of Thomaston; a daughter - in - law, Mrs. Marie Ernest; four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Hooten, Miss Edna Ruth Mitchell, Miss Edna Ruth Mitchell, and Miss Evelyn Mitchell, all of Thomaston; six step - grandchildren; several step great - grandchildren; a niece, Miss Rosemary Dyer of Thomaston; and a nephew, Dr. Richard Dyer of Norris, Tenn.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Barber and Dr. Edwin L. Cliburn officiating. Burial will be in South View cemetery in Thomaston.
Visitation will be tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Sgt. H. Merrill Allen
Sgt. H. Merrill Allen of LaGrange, died Friday at West Georgia Medical Center.
Sgt. Allen, born Oct. 11, 1948, in LaGrange, was the son of Betty McGee Allen and the late J. Paul Allen. He served the past 19 years with the Troup County Sheriffs Office, having served the past 17 years as an investigator and he served 18 years with the Georgia National Guard Post 1177 Transportation Company as a chef. Sgt. Allen was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Susan Brooks Allen of LaGrange; two sons, John Patrick Allen, and James Christopher Allen and Christi Lee, all of LaGrange; a grandchild (on the way); mother, Betty McGee Allen of LaGrange; sister and brother - in - law, Donna Allen Stewart and Tim Stewart, both of LaGrange; mother - in - law and father - in - law, Betty and James Pat Brooks of LaGrange; stepsister and brother - in - law, Maria and Billy Pierce of LaGrange; stepmother, Mary Allen of LaGrange; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Casey Allen and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John McGee and Mr. and Mrs. Horace Allen.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11 at Rosemont Baptist Church with the Revs. Max McCord, Brandon Brooks, Mike Reeves, and Barry Harlin officiating. Burial will be in the Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of Sgt. Allen and will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to American Cancer Society in memory of Sgt. Allen.

Bishop Marvin Burks
Bishop Marvin O. Burks, 84, of 1802 Lincoln St., died Nov. 4 at St. Francis Hospital.
Mr. Burks, born September 4, 1918, in Mountville, was the son of the late Johnny Burks and Bessie E. Burks. Bishop Burks was the pastor of The 5th House of Jeremiah Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen Todd of Detroit, Mich., Betty Mitchell (Samuel) of Troy, Mich.; three sons, Marvin Jr., (Johnnie) of Detroit, Mich., Michael (Charleston) of W.Va., and Paul (Linda) of Detroit, Mich.; two brothers and their spouses, Charles (Juanita) and Arthur (Rose) of Detroit, Mich.; a sister - in - law, Lorene Burks (Reec'e) of LaGrange; 15 grandchildren and a great - grandchild; a special nephew, Robert Russell (Jo Anne) and a very special friend, Sarah Hoffman and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 12 noon. Saturday, Nov. 9 at Mt. Pleasant C.M.E. Church, Mountville with the Rev. Lovett Thornton officiating. Interment will be in the Needmore Cemetery
The family will be at the home of Robert Russell, 379 Big Springs - Mountville Rd. in Mountville and will receive friends at their home.
A service by Mackey - Wilson - Jennings Funeral Home.

Charles D. Potts
Charles D. Potts, 76, of Grantville, died Thursday at Newnan Hospital.
Mr. Potts, born June 27, 1926 in Heard County, was the son of the late David and Nellie Purgason Potts. He retired as a police chief of Grantville after serving 19 years in law enforcement and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grantville and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Before making his home in Grantville in 1963, Mr. Potts was a resident of LaGrange and was a former plant manager for Troup Dairies.
Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Gayla and B.J. Thompson of Grantville; a brother, James Potts of Mobile, Ala.; and a grandson and granddaughter - in - law, Chase and Tiffany Freeman of Hogansville.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Jimmie L. Willis will officiate. Interment will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9.

Edwin Harris Sr.
Edwin 'Popeye' Jeffries Harris Sr., 58, of Douglasville, formerly of LaGrange, died Wednesday.
Mr. Harris, born Nov. 10, 1943, in LaGrange, was the son of the late Harvey and Thelma Harris. He worked as a supervisor in the grading and paving division for Bankhead Paving and Asphalt. He was a former member of the Lithia Springs Jaycee's and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, Jeff and Sabrina Harris of Powder Springs; daughters, Sherry Ann Hughes of Carrolton and Wanda and Jeff Wingfield of Douglasville; brothers, William Harris of LaGrange, Carey Harris of Mobile, Ala., and Kenneth Harris of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Alice Seppela of LaGrange and Linda Wilson of Eatonton; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Rosehaven Chapel with the Revs. David Post and Quinn Evans officiating. Interment will be in Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
Whitley - Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, Nov. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Hal Arrington Jr.
George Howell (Hal) Arrington Jr., 55, of 94 Thomas Road died Wednesday at his residence.
Mr. Arrington, born Dec. 10, 1946, in LaGrange, was the son of Ora Lee Shelnutt Arrington and the late George Howell Arrington Sr. He had lived here all of his life and was the owner and operator of Friendly Appliance Inc.
Mr. Arrington was a member of Unity Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and started the pre - school program. He was a former instructor at Troup Tech where he taught appliance repair, and was a past member of the Civitan Club and the Troup County Sportsman Club.
Survivors in addition to his mother, include his wife, Sylvia S. Arrington of LaGrange; two sons and a daughter - in - law, Geoffrey H. and Tracy Arrington and Adam L. Arrington; a daughter, Jan Marie Arrington, all of LaGrange; his children's mother, Vickie B. Simpkins; six grandchildren, Hilary Arrington, Heath Arrington, Mikayla Gates, Aaron Gates, Madison Gates, and Alec Gates; three stepchildren and their spouses, Kimberly and Charles Hood, Michael Williams, and Daniel and Lori Williams; and a brother, Robert L. Arrington, all of LaGrange; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Lola Marie Arrington.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Unity Baptist Church with the Revs. Bobby Robinson and Chris Davis officiating. Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will be at their home and will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 6 to 9.
Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Unity Baptist Church in memory of Mr. Arrington.

Lawrence D. Poole
Lawrence Denver Poole, 56, of Cartersville and former resident of LaGrange, died Thursday at Emory Cartersville Medical Center.
Mr. Poole, born January 4, 1946 in LaGrange, was the son of Essie Stephens Poole and the late J.C. Poole.
Mr. Poole was a 1964 graduate of LaGrange High School and 1968 class of West Georgia College in Carrollton with a bachelors of science degree in business.
Mr. Poole was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation as a local government - right - of - way coordinator and was a Baptist by faith.
Survivors in addition to his mother, Essie Poole of LaGrange, include his wife, Susan Hammett Poole of Cartersville; a son, Michael Poole of Cartersville; two stepsons and daughters - in - law, Larry and Tracy Freeman and Kevin and Cari Freeman, both of Crested Butte, Colo.; grandchildren, Jeremy Gurley of Cartersville, Hope Freeman, Katherine Freeman, and Savannah Freeman, all of Crested Butte, Colo; sister and brother - in - law, Martha and Warren King of Pine Mountain; a brother, Ken Poole of LaGrange; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Striffler - Hamby Mortuary with the Rev. Sid Shelnutt and Jim Hester officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
The family will greet friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to The Pregnancy Center, P.O. Box 2201, LaGrange, Georgia 30241 or the Lovelight Tree % West Georgia Health Systems, 1514 Vernon Road, LaGrange, Ga. 30240 in memory of Mr. Poole.

Mrs. Annie Nalls, 52, of Head Homes in Hogansville, died Sunday, Nov. 3 at her home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at Springfield Baptist Church in Hogansville, The Rev. Joseph McGuire will officiate. Interment will be in the St. Paul A.M.E. Cemetery.
