GIBSON, Ga. - Mr. Julius "Bill" M. Burkett, Sr., 74, entered into rest Monday, April 8, 2008, at his residence.

Mr. Burkett was a native of Alabama. He was an Air Force Veteran and an electrician.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mrs. Pat Burkett; two sons, David Wayne Burkett of Alabama and Julius Malcomb Burkett, Jr. of Thomson; three daughters, Janet Marie Burkett of Gibson, Sandra Jean Kamp of Camak and Michelle Lynn Russo of Panama City, Fla.; one brother, William Leon "Jake" Burkett of Florida; one sister, Maureen W. Burkett of Florida; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Richard W. "Rick" Benike

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Richard W. "Rick" Benike of Thomson, entered into rest April 23, 2008.

The Funeral Mass was held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 26, 2008, at the Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Bill Williams officiating. Interment followed in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Benike was born in Rochester, Minn. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a construction worker. Mr. Benike was also Catholic by faith.

Survivors include a son: Layne Benike, LaFayette, Col.; mother: Dorothy Benike, Thomson; brother: Pat Benike, Thomson; sister: Theresa Paxton, Douglasville, Ga.; three nieces and two nephews.

Mr. Benike was preceded in death by his father, Walton L. Benike.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Linda and Marlow Mathis

WARRENTON, Ga. - On Wednesday, April 30, 2008, Linda and Marlow Mathis left their earthly home and went to their eternal home.

They were both born to Fred and Blanche Mathis of Warrenton. Linda entered this world January 10, 1986, and Marlow on November 26, 1987. Both were active students in the Warren County School System.

Linda graduated in 2005 and decided to continue her education at Augusta Technical College in Thomson, in early childhood development. Marlow had been employed at St. Gobain in Sparta.

They were both members of Millrock Baptist Church in Warrenton.

They were preceded in death by their fraternal grandparents, Alice and Goody Mathis, Sr., of Thomson.

Their precious memories will be forever cherished by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mathis, Sr.; one brother, Fred Mathis, Jr.; one sister, Mary Ann Mathis, two half sisters, Sholanda and Jennifer Grant, all of Warrenton; maternal grandmother, Estelle Battle of Camak; two aunts, Darnell (James) Myrick of Warrenton, and Sally Mathis of Thomson; 10 uncles, Elbert and Joe Lewis, George and Harold Mathis, all of Thomson, Georgia, Floyd Mathis and Billy Walker, both of Augusta, Milton Mathis of Conyers, Ga., William (Sarah) Walker of Camak, Georgia and Willie James (Helen) Battle of Warrenton; Marlow leaves behind her financé, Dominique Moss of Sparta; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and sorrowing friends.

Dawson's Mortuary of Warrenton was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Linda Gay

DEARING, Ga. - Mrs. Linda Gay, 58, beloved wife of Mr. Richard Gay, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at her residence.

Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Mr. Russell Gary officiating.

Mrs. Gay was a native of Fulton County, but had lived in Dearing for many years. She was a Nursery owner, a plant grower and a homemaker. She was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Mr. Richard Gay, Dearing; three sons, Johnny Paul Gay and Freeman Johnny Gay, both of Dearing, and Joseph Keith Gay, Savannah; a sister, Tina Rogers, Jackson; two brothers, Edward Thomas Walker, Jr., Yatesville, Ga. and William Elliott Walker, Jackson; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Ruby S. Ready Wylds

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Ruby S. Ready Wylds, 86, entered into rest on Monday, January 28, 2008, at Golden Living Community-Windermere.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 in the Platt's Funeral Home Crawford Avenue Chapel, with Reverend Bill Davis officiating. Interment followed at Westover Memorial Park.

Mrs. Wylds was a life member of Crawford Avenue Baptist Church. She taught the Children's Sunday School Class, at Crawford Avenue Baptist, for many years. She was a native of Aiken, S.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Landrum Wylds, Sr., and her parents, Claude and Mattie Ford Ready.

Survivors include step-sons, Landrum Wylds, Jr., of Missouri, Tommy Wylds, of Tennessee; step- daughter, Gloria J. Wylds Nicol, of Illinois; cousins, James W. Key, Jr., of Martinez, Estelle Fendley, of Thomson, Joyce Hadden, of Blythe, Annette Irby, of Augusta; aunts, Frances E. Key, of Augusta, Mary Dudley, of Aiken, S.C.; and several step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bryant Wolf, Jason Rote, Sterling Howell, Joe Thompson, Charles Wildes and Tony Moates.

If so desired, memorials may be made to Crawford Avenue Baptist Church, 507 Crawford Avenue, Augusta, Ga. 30904.

Platt's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. "Skip" Elmer Henry Orr

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. "Skip" Elmer Henry Orr, of Thomson, died on April 5, 2008. He was 62 years old.

Mr. Orr will be cremated and a private committal service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Orr is survived by his wife, Lecia M. Orr; son, James Orr; step-son, Taylor Medeiros; step-daughter, Jessica Medeiros; sisters, Nancy Orr and Brenda Orr; his brother, Dudley Orr. Mr. Orr was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Orr.

Mr. Orr was retired from the United States Army as an E7. He served two tours in the Vietnam War and received two purple hearts.

The Poteet Funeral Homes, West Chapel, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mr. Jimmie S. Brooks

BEECH ISLAND, S.C. - Entered into rest on Friday, December 28, 2007, Mr. Jimmie S. Brooks, 71, of Beech Island, S.C.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, Max, John Willie and Earl Brooks and two sisters, Dera Davis and Jean Laney.

Surviving are three sons, Richard "Ricky" Brooks (Danelle), James "Mike" Brooks, William "Shorty" Brooks (Theresa), all of Beech Island, S.C.; a brother, John Brooks (Margaret), Thomson; three sisters, Sara Morrison (Billy ), Lincolnton, Julia Connor (Ned), Dearing, and Wanda Stokes, Warrenville, S.C., a sister-in-law, Kathleen Brooks Smith (Al), Augusta, special friend, Julia Dudley, Warrenville, S.C.; four grandchildren: Jimmy Brooks, Springtown, Texas, Susan Adams, Aiken, David Wise, Beech Island, S.C. and Jennifer Wise, Beech Island, S.C. and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Brooks was born in Stapleton to the late John Alvin and Nellie Elizabeth Norris Brooks. He was the retired owner and operator of Brooks Paint and Body for 20 years. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a Baptist.

Funeral services were Monday at 2 p.m. in the Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. D. L. "Sonny" Peevy officiating. Interment will follow in Pineview Memorial Gardens, North Augusta. Pallbearers were Mr. Brooks' nephews. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Old Timers Breakfast Club at Hardees in Clearwater, S.C.

Hatcher Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martha Jo Herringdine

BETHLEHEM, Ga. - Mrs. Martha Jo Herringdine, 73, beloved wife of Mr. Jesse Walter Herringdine, died Saturday, January 26, 2008, in the Embracing Hospice, in Snellville Georgia.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, January 28, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Long, Rev. David Sisler, and Mrs. Marsha Sandridge officiating. Burial was in the Westview Cemetery.

Mrs. Herringdine was a native of McDuffie County, but had lived in Bethlehem for many years. She was retired from the transportation industry and was a member of the Grace Fellowship in Greensboro, Ga.

Survivors include her husband, Jesse Walter Herringdine, Bethlehem; her daughter, Dana Lynn Herringdine, Oxford; her two sons, David Bryan Herringdine, Ga. and Jesse Darran Herringdine, Gainesville, Ga.; her brother, Fay Hunt, Thomson; her sister, Diane Marsh, Thomson; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Barry Hunt, Jeffery Marsh, J.R. Marsh, Judson Lazenby, Clay Marsh, and Bubba Hunt.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Fellowship in Greensboro, Ga.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Priscilla Ann Brown

APPLING, Ga. - Mrs. Priscilla Ann Brown, 66, wife of Mr. George H. Brown, entered into rest on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday April 25, 2008, at Kiokee Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Hartman officiating. Interment was in the Kiokee Cemetery.

If so desired, memorials may be made in memory of Ann Brown to the Relay for Life, c/o McDuffie Animal Hospital, Dr. David Ruehle, PO Box 571, Thomson, GA 30824, or to the Kiokee Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 430, Appling, GA 30802.

Pallbearers were Pete Knox, Ben Dorn, Eddy Sanderlin, Terry Hyatt, Tracy McDaniel and Darryl James.

Mr. Carol W. "C.W." Nason
Entrepreneur
NORWOOD, Ga. - Mr. Carol W. "C.W." Nason, 80, of Norwood, entered into rest March 9, 2008.

He was the beloved husband of Sarah E. "Libby" Nason for 56 years.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Macedonia United Methodist Church with Rev. David Sisler officiating. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. at the Lakeview Memory Gardens in Phenix City, Ala., with Rev. David Howle officiating.

Mr. Nason was born in Greer, SC, and was the son of the late Albert Dewey Nason and the late Ruby Norris Nason. He graduated from Central High School in Phenix City, Ala. He lived most of his life in McDuffie County. Mr. Nason served in the United States Marine Corps, was a sheet metal worker for 20 years and the owner/operator of Camak Trading Post for many years. He was a Methodist by faith and a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by sons Carol W. Nason, Jr., and Ricky Jones.

Survivors include: wife: Sarah E. "Libby" Nason, Thomson; sons: Randy Jones (Linda), Sierra Vista, AZ, Nile Jones , Atlanta, Glen Jones (Wanda), Augusta, Keith Jones (Brenda), Jeffersonville, Ga., Kenneth Jones, Thomson; brother: George Nason - Phenix City, Ala.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1725, Augusta, GA 30903 or Macedonia United Methodist Church, 7257 Hwy 80 N, Thomson, GA 30824.
