Melvin Hall

Melvin H. Hall, 86, of 2334 Avenue H, Fort Madison, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at his home.

Born Oct. 25, 1914, in Hills, he was the son of Warren A. and Lavina K. Deatsch Hall. He married Mary Cecelia Holtkamp on June 14, 1938, in Fort Madison. She died Feb. 7, 1964.
Mr. Hall worked for Walter A. Sheaffer as his groundskeeper. Later, during World War II, he worked as a mainte-nance/plumber-pipefitter at Sheaffer Pen, retiring in 1974.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the church choir, Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus. He helped with Boys Scouts of America Troop 7, Explorer Scouts and Sea Scouts, and later served as a councilman with them. He was a member of Izaak Walton League, Iowa State Coon Hunters, Lee County Coyote Hunters, National Rifle Association and the National Trappers Association. He was a commercial fisherman, an avid coon hunter and outdoorsman.

Survivors include five sons, Dale M. Hall, Don F. Hall, Bill Hall and Gene Hall, all of Fort Madison, and Jim D. Hall of Burlington; two daughters, Carol A. Fedler of West Point and Mary Jo Gavillet of Carthage, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Celeste Thinker of Fort Madison; three brothers, Cleo A. Hall of Phoenix, Ariz., Harley H. Hall of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Lloyd J. Hall of Granada Hills, Calif.; and four sisters-in-law.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister, three sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where a rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. A wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Hall will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Madison, with the Rev. Tim Sheedy officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Fort Madison Catholic School System. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Michael Lindsay

Michael E. Lindsay, 44, of Natchez, Miss., died Sunday, July 15, 2001, in Natchez. Arrangements are pending at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Ill.

Norman Johns

Norman J. Johns, 65, of Burlington, died at 4:18 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Orval Jacobs

Orval C. "Jake" Jacobs, 91, of Carthage, Ill., died at 6:48 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.

Born Aug. 30, 1909, in Henderson County, Ill., he was the son of Charles and Lela Woods Jacobs. He married Doris Fitzgerald on Nov. 25, 1948, in St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Jacobs was a graduate of Stronghurst (Ill.) High School. He farmed and then served in the Army during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He then moved to Carthage, where he worked at the Chevy and Buick Garage until his retirement in 1974. After his retirement, he worked as a funeral assistant for Neiser Funeral Home and later for DeJong-Neiser Funeral Home in Carthage and Bowen for more than 10 years.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Carthage.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Pat Knustrom of Nauvoo, Ill.; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and two sisters, Louise Knustrom of Denmark and Vera White of Stronghurst, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Neiser-Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Jacobs will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Pastor William Pyatt officiating. Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.

Memorials have been established for Carthage Senior Center and the United Methodist Church of Carthage.

Wayne Davis

Wayne L. Davis, 79, of Kalona, formerly of Crawfordsville and Olds, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born Oct. 19, 1921, in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Howell and Hazel Owens Davis. On June 15, 1946, he married Doris M. Miller in Olds. She died July 8, 1997.
Mr. Davis was a retired farmer. He farmed in the Crawfordsville community.

He was a graduate of Crawfordsville High School. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Crawfordsville American Legion and United Church of Crawfordsville.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Williams of Reno, Nev., and Jerilyn Rich of Kalona; one son, Randall Davis of Greeley, Colo.; four grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Erwin of Crawfordsville.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield.

The funeral for Mr. Davis will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Crawfordsville, with the Rev. Oluf Kongshaug officiating. Burial will be in Crawfordsville Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for United Church of Crawfordsville.

Yvonne Wilson

Yvonne Louise Ried Wilson, 60, of Montrose, died at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Fort Madison Community Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison.

Sophronia Campbell

Sophronia Campbell, 92, formerly of Wapello, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 8, 2005, at Heartland Health Care in Henry, Ill. Arrangements are pending at Dudgeon–McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

Marilyn Riggle

Marilyn Ruth Riggle, 72, of West Burlington died at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 25, 1933, in Monmouth, Ill., she was the daughter of Earl W. and Viola Meline Riggle. On Oct. 18, 1952, she married Richard R. Alecock. He died Feb. 1, 1996.

Mrs. Riggle worked in production at Champion for 16 years and retired in 1990.

She was a 1950 graduate of Gladstone High School in Gladstone, Ill. She was a member of West Avenue Baptist Church and enjoyed sewing, quilting and traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Dana Schrader of Burlington and Penny Gibson of Savannah, Ga.; five grandchildren; one great–grandchild; one sister, Fern Lox of Oquawka, Ill.; one brother, Wayne Riggle of Fort Madison; several nieces; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Riggle will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at West Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kirk Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for West Avenue Baptist Church.

Jerry Ross

Jerry Alan Ross, 66, of Carthage, Ill., died of cancer at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at his son's home in West Salem, Ill.

Born Feb. 17, 1938, in Burlington, he was the son of Walter Ray and Gladys Watson Ross. On June 7, 1958, he married Jean Marlay in Davenport.

Mr. Ross was a bookkeeper for Thermogas Co. in Ottumwa for 14 years, then was a plant manager in Lime Springs. From 1977 to 1983 he owned and operated Our Own Hardware in Lime Springs. For the last 13 years, he worked at Thermogas, now MPC Energy, in Denver, Ill.

He was a 1956 graduate of Winfield High School and a 1960 graduate of Burlington Business School with a degree in accounting. He loved building and restoring his John Deere toy tractor collection and farm set, which won many trophies and awards at area shows.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Debra Jean Smith and Shari Rae Bolton, both of Lime Springs; one son, William Alan Ross of West Salem; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Canby of Winfield and Judy Schieffelbein of Jasper, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral for Mr. Ross will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Carthage, with the Rev. Bill Pyatt officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Winfield–Scott Township Cemetery in Winfield.

A memorial has been established.

Mary Chase

Mary H. Chase, 92, of Annapolis, Md., died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis.

She was born July 25, 1909, in Oakland Mills. She married Byron G. Chase in July 1939 in St. Louis. He died in April 1982.

She owned and published a local newspaper in Flora, Ill. She was a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church in Annapolis.

Survivors include three nephews, Tom Hamilton of Allentown, Pa., John Hamilton of Barrington, Ill., and George Hamilton of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and three nieces, Nancy Shores of Annapolis, Ann Rose of Allentown, and Susan Starr of West Palm Beach.

The funeral for Mrs. Chase was Monday afternoon at the Hardesty Funeral Home in Annapolis, Md. Burial will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery in Burlington.

A memorial has been established for St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Annapolis.

Velma Cutkomp

Velma Irena Cutkomp, 98, of Columbus City, died Wednesday morning, March 9, 2005, at Colonial Manor Care Center in Co–lumbus Junction.

Born April 1, 1906, in Lone Oak, she was the daughter of George and Florence Rickey Boulton. On Dec. 31, 1925, she married George Russel Cutkomp. He died in 1963.

Mrs. Cutkomp was a graduate of Columbus Junction High School. She and her husband made their home on a farm in the Shellbark Community southwest of Columbus Junction, where she lived until moving to Columbus City. She was a member of Columbus City Free Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was active in the CYC and Women's Missionary Society. She enjoyed attending the Free Methodist camp meetings for two weeks in the summer in Birmingham. She also was active in the Shellbark Community and CCIC in Columbus City.

Survivors include one daughter, Florence Johnson of Plainfield, Ill.; two sons, Roger Cutkomp of Columbus Junction and Ron Cutkomp of Columbus City; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, three sisters and four brothers.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stacy–Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction.

The funeral for Mrs. Cutkomp will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Columbus Community Free Methodist Church in Columbus City, with Pastors Jay Davis and David Seelye officiating. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery . There will be a time of food and fellowship for family and friends at the Masonic Lodge in Columbus City after the committal services.

A memorial has been established.

William Simmons

William O. Simmons, 87, of New London died Thursday, April 26, 2007, at the New London Nursing and Rehab Center in New London.

Born Oct. 23, 1919, in Baltimore Township, he was the son of Elmer and Hazel Remick Simmons. On Nov. 21, 1945, he married Leta Irene Wilson in Troy, Kan. She died Oct. 26, 1978. He later married Janet Miller. They divorced.

Mr. Simmons was a life–long farmer. He was stationed in Hawaii with the Navy during World War II. He graduated from New London High School in 1938. He was a member of the Lowell Baptist Church and attended the New London Presbyterian Church. He was past commander and life member of New London Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7641. He enjoyed time spent cooking with his first wife at the VFW. He enjoyed gardening, being outdoors and spending time with his livestock.

Survivors include two daughters, Darlene Lutes of New London and Evelyn Woodruff of Danville; four grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; two step–great–grandchildren; one brother, Ervin "Pete" Simmons of New London; one sister, Betty Ball of Mount Pleasant; and former wife, Janet Simmons of Danville.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Chapel in New London, with family receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m.

The graveside service for Mr. Simmons will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Burge Cemetery in New London, with Tim Corporon officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard.

A memorial has been established for the New London Rescue Unit.
