Harold Leslie Wiedow, age 96 of North English and formerly Guernsey died following a short illness on Thursday, January 24, 2008 at the English Valley Care Center in North English. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, February 4, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church (2656 CC Ave. Victor, IA 52347) with the Rev. David MacKain officiating. Private interment will be in the Guernsey Cemetery. Donations may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Harold’s name. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English is in charge of arrangements. Harold Leslie Wiedow was born icon on June 17, 1911, in Iowa County, near Victor, IA, the son of Charles Henry and Velda Lenore Forney Wiedow. He graduated from Guernsey High School. Harold was a former Poweshiek County Deputy Sheriff and for many years was the Poweshiek County Recorder. Harold was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He is survived by a son Paul of Cabot, AR; a sister Violet Wise; 3 granddaughters; 6 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elsie, a brother Clark and sisters Helen, Betty, Alice and Adena.

Everett E. Dillon

Everett Edgar Dillon was born icon on April 16, 1919 near South English, IA, the son of Charles and Olive M. Shipman Dillon. The family later moved to the Millersburg area and Everett graduated from Millersburg High School in 1935. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1938 and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. He was on the USS Lexington when it was destroyed. He was discharged from the Navy in 1945. Everett was married icon to Eva Nyman in San Diego, CA on June 26, 1942 and she preceded him in death. Everett settled in Tacoma, WA, where he worked many years for ASARCO, a copper smelting company. He retired in 1977. He later married icon Alberta Speight in 1978 in Reno, NV and she too preceded him in death. Everett loved to bowl and had bowled several perfect games. He also enjoyed hunting and going salmon fishing. Everett moved to North English in June 2003 and became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in October 2007. He died after a brief illness on Friday, January 25, 2008, at the English Valley Care Center. Everett lived 88 years, 9 months and 9 days. He is survived by a sister June Caskey of North English, IA; a stepdaughter Leta Ruscheinsky of Puyallup, WA; a stepson Richard Armstrong; sisters-in-law Dorothy Dillon of North English, IA, Virginia Horr & Harriett Johnson both of Tacoma, WA; 2 step grandchildren Cindy & Dusty Ruscheinsky; 2 step great grandchildren Zach & Rayne Ruscheinsky; nieces and nephews: Richard Dillon, Robert Dillon, Marilee Reasoner, Karen Dillon, Karolyn Grove, Ronald Dillon, Patricia Stanich, Terry Caskey, Deanna Conner, Michael Caskey, Debra Brown, Sandra Hester, Kathy Hull, Jerrold (Bud) Fowler, Everett Fowler, Mark Fowler, Dennis, Barbara Delores & Donelda. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, sister Jean Fowler & husband Jerry, brothers Harold Dillon, Wayne Dillon, Wilmer Dillon and wife Mary and brother-in-law Russell Caskey, and nephews David and Chuck Dillon.

Mahlon Gingerich

Riverside- Mahlon Joseph Gingerich, was born icon September 8, 1936, in Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Linus and Mary (Chupp) Gingerich. He attended rural school in Johnson County. Mahlon was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Swartzendruber on August 17, 1959, at the Sharon Evangelical Church in Sharon Center. He worked for Cleo Dickel before entering the service. He served 2 years in the US Army. When he returned from the service, he worked at Moore Business Forms in Iowa City, for 15 years. He also farmed and sold Archer Petroleum products for many years. Mahlon suffered a stroke in 1984 at the age of 48, and he continued to have many health problems since that time. He had a double heart valve replacement surgery in 1998. Mahlon was a loving, out going person who enjoyed visiting and being with family and friends, he enjoyed hunting and trap shooting. Mahlon died Saturday, January 26, 2008, northwest of Brighton after a sudden illness. He lived 71 years, 4 months and 18 days. He is survived by his wife Jane of Riverside; 2 daughters: Anita (Robert) Kanagy of Wellman and Carmen (Johnny) Schwartz of Kalona; 7 grandchildren: Cory Kanagy, Fairlight, Albert, Sarah, Anne, Madeline and Kathryn Schwartz; 2 brothers: Virgil (Linda) of Mishawaka, Indiana and Jacob (Betty) of Goshen, Indiana; 3 sisters: Lydia Mae (Joe) Telgren of Mt. Pleasant, Treva (Tobe) Yoder and Pauline (Emery) Yoder of Nappanee, Indiana; 1 sister-in-law Maryanna Gingerich; 5 uncles, 3 aunts and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Rueben, Ralph and Rudy; and a nephew Kermit Gingerich. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at the Kalona Mennonite Church in Kalona. Pastor David Boshart and Pastor Larry Rediger will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday from 6-8 pm and Tuesday after 9 am with the family present from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Kalona. A general memorial fund has been established.

KEOTA - Irene Elizabeth Namer, age 73, of Keota, died Monday, January 28, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a lengthy illness. Irene was born icon March 20, 1934, in Wallingford, Iowa, to Leon and Florence (Jurries) Fry. She was raised in Emmetsburg and graduated from Emmetsburg High School. On May 26, 1953 she married icon Ronald Namer in Graettinger, Iowa. Following marriage the couple lived in Curlew, Iowa. They moved to Keota in the fall of 1979. She worked in sales, retiring in 1992. Irene was a member of Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed counted cross stitch, crocheting, sewing and camping. Survivors include her husband: Ron of Keota; two sons: Allen Namer and wife Mary of Clinton and Gary Namer of Keota; four daughters: Wanda Wilkins and husband Arthur of Morrison, Illinois, Kathleen Robertson of Ottumwa, Valerie Decker and husband Dave of Deep River and Laurie Altenhofen and husband Randall of Harper; 25 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; her mother: Florence Fry of Spencer; five sisters: Annette Potter of Fostoria, Sharon Koenck of Spencer, Lois Heller of Spencer, Sandra Johnson of Ruthven and Doris Stevens of Decatur, Tennessee and two brothers: Leonard Fry of Spencer and Larry Fry of Ponca City, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her father and sister: Ruth Sabin. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2008, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Rich Adam officating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary Cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Keota Q.R.S. or Keota Fire Department. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Charles Leroy Pope was born icon on September 10, 1929, near South English, IA, the son of Russell Frederick and Hazel E. Goodman Pope. He graduated from North English High School and served a Sergeant in the US Army during the Korean War. Charles was a farmer all of his life. On September 11, 1965, he was united in marriage to Marlene Elizabeth Fisher at the Franklin Methodist Church near Wellman. Charles was a member of the North English United Methodist Church and had attended the Franklin United Methodist Church. His greatest joys were spending time with his family and granddaughter Lauren and driving his team of horses on the annual trip to Fort Madison, IA. Charles died following a courages battle with cancer at his home near North English on Saturday, January 19, 2008. He lived 78 years, 4 months and 9 days. He is survived by his wife Marlene Pope of North English, a son Lynn Pope and wife Amney of North English, a granddaughter Lauren Pope and a sister Agnes Guzzardo of Roscoe, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Mary DeVault. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with the Rev. Marlene Janssen officiating. His body was deeded to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and burial of his ashes will be at a later date in the Wellman Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers the family requests memorials for Iowa City Hospice, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or Habitat For Humanity.

Eloise Edna Swink was born icon on November 11, 1921, near North English, IA, the daughter of Ora Garret and Bertha Wade Hall. She attended rural Tucker School. Eloise married icon David Huber on August 19, 1941 in Lancaster, MO. A son Jack was born icon to this union. David was killed in 1945 during World War II. On July 1, 1948, Eloise married icon Donald M. Swink in Williamsburg, IA. Three children were born icon to this union: Donna, Vicki and Larry. Eloise lived her entire life in the North English community. Donald preceded her in death in 1982. While she enjoyed working with her flowers and traveling, her family was her life. Eloise died at her home in North English, following a short illness on Friday, February 1, 2008. Eloise lived 86 years. She is survived by daughters Donna Hospodarsky of Tupelo, MS; Vicki Ayers of South English, IA; Larry Swink and wife Debra of Ladora, IA; a daughter-in-law Maxine Huber of North English, IA; 5 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter; and a brother Leo (Chub) Hall of Wellman, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son Jack Lee Huber, brother Cleo Hall and sisters Virginia Hall, Mary Joanne Hall and Mina Debler. Her body was cremated and private graveside services will be held at a later date. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service will be in charge of arrangements. The family will greet friends at her home in North English on Thursday, February 7, 2008 from 1 PM to 4 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Essence of Life Hospice in Amana.

Dianne L. Cobb, age 61 of Cooper, TX, died at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas Texas on Friday, February 1, 2008 following a long illness. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at the Christian Church in Kinross, IA, with the Rev. James Bringman officiating. Burial will be in the Piersol Cemetery near North English, IA. Visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English from 5PM to 8 PM on Tuesday, February 5, 2008. A memorial fund has been established for the Mt. Mercy Nursing Program. Dianne L Cobb was born icon on November 25, 1946 in Osceloa, IA, the daughter of Glenn & Louise Twombley McCarl. She graduated from Prairie High School in 1965. Dianne graduated with a nursing degree from Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1968 and received her BS degree from St. Francis in St. Francis, MN. Dianne married icon John R. Cobb on June 29, 1968 in Cedar Rapids, IA. As a result of John’s job, they moved about the country. They have lived in Ankeny, IA, Alliance, NE, Coon Rapids, MN, Castle Rock, CO, Andover, MN and Keller, TX. Dianne worked for a variety of hospitals, nursing homes and finished her career in hospice. When they both retired, they moved to Pecan Gap, TX. Dianne enjoyed art galleries and museums, Boyds Bears, gardening, reading, shopping, and loved to watch A & E Mysteries. She was happiest when she bought things for others rather than for herself. She was an excellent cook, loved a full house, and was good at whatever she tried. She was a mother, a nurse, a daughter, a sister, and a wife but the greatest way to describe her the simplest: The Best. Dianne had a pure and loving heart. She raised children that weren’t born icon to her, but they were of her heart. Dianne was a caring soul who helped those in pain. She is survived by her husband John Cobb of Cooper, TX; 2 daughters: Steffanie Hjertstedt of Grand Forks, ND, Heather Goodson of Kyle, TX, a son Matthew Cobb of Kyle, TX and who is currently stationed in Ft. Stewart, GA with the US Army; her parents Glenn and Louise McCarl of Cedar Rapids, IA, and a sister Vicki Lefebure of Fairfax, IA.

Williamsburg - James Dale Turner was born icon September 20, 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Forrest and Ecil (Baker) Turner. He graduated from Carlisle High School in 1952. He served in the US Navy from 1952-1956. He was united in marriage to Nancy Shilling on September 4, 1959 in Des Moines. James graduated from Simpson College in 1963. After graduation, he taught and coached at Lohrville High School from 1963-1967 and at Beaman-Conrad from 1967-1973. James and Nancy moved to Williamsburg in 1973, to start the girls basketball and softball programs at Williamsburg High School. He coached girls basketball from 1973-1982 and girls softball from 1974-1992. He retired from teaching and coaching in 1992. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan.He and his family were avid racing fans, traveling to Indianapolis for the “500" and camping at Knoxville at the Knoxville raceway, meeting many dear friends. He was a member of the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 of Williamsburg. James died Monday, February 4, 2008, at his home after a sudden illness. He lived 74 years, 4 months and 15 days. He is survived by hi wife Nancy of Williamsburg; 2 sons Andy (Lisa) Turner of Bloomington, IL and Chris (Kayleen) Turner of Camanche, IA; 4 grandchildren: Brent, Brittany, Karissa and Kiana. He was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 pm on Friday, February 8, 2008, at the Richardson Funeral Home in Carlisle, IA. Burial will be in the Carlisle Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Thursday at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg and on Friday from 10:30 am until service time at the Richardson Funeral Home in Carlisle. Memorial may be made to establish a "James Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund".

WILLIAMSBURG - Merle Gene Turner was born icon January 14, 1925 in Fairfax, Iowa the son of Frank and Leona (Rose) Turner. He has lived and farmed in the Williamsburg community most all of his life. He also worked for Amana Corporation, Williamsburg Super Value, and a saw mill at South Amana. He was a member of the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Williamsburg. Gene died on Sunday, February 4, 2008 at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo following a long illness at the age of 83 years. There is no immediate family. He is preceded in death by his parents. Graveside Service will be 10:30am on Thursday, February 7, 2008, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg. Pastor James Parks will officiate.

SIGOURNEY - David E. Noller, age 83, of Sigourney, died of cancer Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. David was born icon May 26, 1924 near Sigourney to Glenn H. and Bernice (Snakenberg) Noller. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1941 and attended Iowa State University before serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. On July 10, 1945, he married icon Katherine Jean McCuen at the Sigourney United Methodist Church. David was a grain and livestock producer for 60 years, retiring in 2005. He was active in countless organizations and has served on many boards and committees including the Sigourney United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and was a trustee, Keokuk County State Bank board, Keokuk County Health Center board, Keokuk County Expo board, Sigourney Area Development Corporation board, 50-year member of Webb Lodge #182 A.F. &A.M., Master Swine Producer in 1952, National Livestock and Meat Board, president and director of the Iowa Beef Improvement Association, charter member of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association, Iowa Hog Cholera Eradication Committee, committeeman of the American International Charolais Association and a 1995 Iowa Master Farmer. He enjoyed traveling, family and friends, and Hawkeye and Cyclone sports. Survivors include his daughter: Nancy Kay Jones of Spokane, Washington; son: Jon David Noller and wife Cheryl of Dallas City, Illinois; five grandchildren: Dr. Mark Stephen Jones, Jennifer Lyn Reichert and husband Blake, Mia Marie Mulholland and husband Ryan, Ali Jean Noller and Joseph Jon Noller; four great grandchildren: Andrew David and Ian Darby Jones, Kale Tyler and Samantha Brynn Reichert; two brothers: Donald E. Noller and wife Jane of Juno Beach, Florida and Thomas H. Noller and wife Evelyn of Lantana, Florida and very dear friends: Wayne and Judy Frank and family. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Katherine Jean in 1992; son-in-law: Dr. David W. Jones and twin great granddaughters: Brynn Katherine and Tyler Sydney Reichert. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2008, at the Sigourney United Methodist Church, with Rev. John Hembry officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 8, 2008,at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the family will be present from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. There will be a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Sigourney United Methodist Church or Hospice of Keokuk County. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
