Lloyd Harlen McGuire was born icon on August 20, 1921 near North English, IA, the son of Harlen W. and Effie Grimm McGuire. He lived and farmed his entire life in the North English area. Lloyd attended country school near his home. He was united in marriage to Mildred M. Van Dee on April 25, 1950 in Oskaloosa, IA. Lloyd was a member of the Tilton Evangelical Methodist Church. He worked for Farm Service and drove a school bus for several years. He enjoyed watching game shows on TV and attending performances at the What Cheer Opera House. Lloyd died following a long illness at his home on Tuesday, January 13, 2009. He lived 87 years, 4 months and 24 days. He is survived by his wife Mildred of rural North English, IA; 11 children: Kenneth (Lea) McGuire of North English, IA; Marvin McGuire of North English, IA; Virginia (Robert) McGuire of Oskaloosa, IA; Vivian (Jeff) Clark of Millersburg, IA; Martha (Tadd Wiseman) McGuire of Webster, IA; Harlen (Kim) McGuire of Stanley, NC; Carl McGuire of Broadview, MT; Neva (Bruce) Redlinger of North English, IA; Larry (Michele) McGuire of North English, IA; Dwight (Svetlana) McGuire of Darlington County Durham, England; Lyle McGuire of North English, IA; 20 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and a sister Mary Loretta Biwer of North English, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Dorothea Wright. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 16, 2009, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Kenneth L. Lake officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, January 16, 2009 from 12 PM to 2 PM. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near North English.

KEOTA - Myrle M. Sondag, age 89, of Iowa City, formerly of Keota, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Myrle was born icon August 15, 1919, near South English, Iowa, to Frederick and Nelle (Price Harris) Knox. She grew up in the South English area and graduated from South English High School. On December 20, 1947 she married icon Willard Frank Sondag in Sigourney. The couple made their home in Keota, where Myrle worked as a clerk in the variety store in Keota for ten years. She also worked in housekeeping at Maplewood Manor for 14 years, retiring in 1986. Myrle, Edna and Pat Sanders shared a home in Iowa City since 2004. Myrle was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary for several years and the Birthday Club. She is survived by a nephew: Ronald (Cecilia) Neis of Cedar Rapids; special friends: Edna and Pat Sanders of Iowa City and Tim (Diane) Sanders and family of North Liberty and brother-in-law: Frank (Evelyn) Sondag of Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Willard in 1974 and sister: Imo Neis in 1976. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery in rural Sigourney. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Myrle and her family.

Williamsburg - Leona A. Huedepohl, was born icon on November 30, 1914, in York Township, Iowa, the daughter of Christian and Minnie (Falkenburg) Teggatz. She attended Immanuel Parochial School. On February 7, 1937, she was united in marriage to Walter T. Huedepohl, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, near Williamsburg. She lived on the family farm until moving into Williamsburg in May of 1995. She was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. As a homemaker she enjoyed quilting, knitting, baking and gardening. Leona died on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg following an extended illness at the age of 94. She is survived by a son Dennis (Connie) Huedepohl of Williamsburg; a daughter: Dianne (Kurt) Metzner of Jackson, MS; 6 grandchildren: Jeff (Gretchen) Huedepohl of Jefferson City, MO, Scott (Andrea) Huedepohl of Williamsburg, Shelly (Bryce) Brecht of Marengo, Kristin (Andrew) Ward of Walford, Tom Metzner of Overland Park, KS, and David (Malia) Metzner of Atlanta GA; 10 great grandchildren: Ben, Seth and Hannah Huedepohl, Aaron and Jacob Huedepohl, Kelsey and Tanner Brecht, Nathan and Allison Ward and Ella Metzner; 3 sisters-in-law: Flora Teggatz of North English, Leona Wille and Norma McCoy of Williamsburg; a brother-in-law Clarence (Ramona) Huedepohl of Millersburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 3 brothers: Wayne, Merlin and Alvin Teggatz. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, near Williamsburg. Rev. Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 3-7 PM at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

WELLMAN - Wilma Jean Hohenshell was born icon January 13, 1922 on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Valentine, South Dakota the daughter of William Keith and Lulu (Parks) Morrow. Her family moved to Kinross, Iowa in her youth. She graduated from Kinross High School. On August 13, 1940, she was united in marriage to Lewis E. Hohenshell, at the Christian Church in Cedar Rapids. She worked for Maple Crest for 10 years, then worked at the University of Iowa Hospital as a Dietary Supervisor for 25 years, retiring in 1986. Lewis and Wilma lived in Wellman for over 60 years. Wilma moved to the Halcyon House in Washington in February of 2005. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Wilma was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Cubs fan, and she enjoyed playing bingo. Wilma died suddenly on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington at the age of 87 years. Wilma is survived by a son Larry (Linda) Hohenshell of Ankeny, IA; 2 daughters Connie (Lain) Messer and Patricia (Harry) Karnes all of Washington, IA; 8 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and a great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lewis on December 29, 2008; and a sister Leora LeFever. Celebration of Life Service will be held 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Rev. Rich Pippert will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 12:30 - 2:00 P.M., at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Memorials are for the Halcyon House in Washington.

WASHINGTON-Genevieve “Geny” S. Bombei, age 90, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Washington, died Thursday, January 22, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Geny was born icon June 16, 1918 in Harper, Iowa, to Vincent and Dorothy (Peiffer) Schulte and attended St. Elizabeth Catholic School in Harper. On January 31, 1939, she married icon Leonard H. Bombei at St. Elizabeth Church in Harper. The couple lived and farmed near Packwood, Brighton, West Chester and Washington. Geny moved to Cedar Rapids in January of 2005. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington, the Altar and Rosary Society and the “Sew-n-So” Club in West Chester. Geny enjoyed cooking, her faith and her family. Survivors include five children: Gary Bombei and wife Rosalyn of Solon, Ohio, Ronald Bombei and wife Marietta of Indianapolis, Indiana, Connie Conklin and husband Robert of Chicago, Illinois, Bonnie Quick and husband Russ of Lincoln, Nebraska and Mary Holcombe and husband Jim of Marion; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one brother: Robert Schulte of Keota and three sisters: Arlene Samuelson of Washington, Thelma Mahan of Wayland and Betty Adams of Delta. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Leonard in 1994 and two sisters: Irma Gent and Theola Hermann. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2009, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Rev. Paul Appel officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a rosary at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for St. Luke’s Hospice in Cedar Rapids or St. James Catholic Church. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Geny and her family.

HARPER - Daniel J. Merz, age 84, of Harper, died Monday, January 26, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Dan was born icon December 28, 1924, near Harper, to John and Margaret (Sieren) Merz and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in Harper. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. On June 17, 1959, he married icon Kathryn Evonne Flynn in Washington, Iowa. A lifetime resident of the Harper community, Dan farmed until retiring in 1987. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, V.F.W. and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. Dan enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, making home brew and being with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife: Evonne of Harper; five children: Bradley of Cameron, North Carolina, Angela Abernathey and husband Jim of Swisher, Kevin of Sigourney, Jacqueline Campbell and husband Brad of Juneau, Alaska and Sheila of Ames and four grandchildren: Timothy and Tanner Cave and Ben and Nolan Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Richard, Arthur, William “Bill”, Floyd, John, Jr. and Lester and two sisters: Ellen Laux and Mary Berg. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 30, 2009, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper, with military rites by the Keota V.F.W. Post #4716. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 5:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Maplewood Manor or Q.R.S. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Dan and his family.

Milford “Slim” S. Holeton was born icon on July 16, 1922, in North English, IA to John Elvin and Martha Delilah Smith Holeton. He attended school through the 8th grade at Gritter School near North English and finished his education at North English High School. Slim served in the Army during World War II until he was injured by shrapnel and received the Purple Heart. Slim was united in marriage to Shirley M. Kirkpatrick on December 22, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After marriage he joined his father and brothers in the family carpentry business. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting and playing cards. He liked a good story or joke, even if it was at his own expense. Slim loved his family and spending time with them. He loved his country and was proud to have served in the Army. He took pride in his work and often stated that homes the Holeton family had built would be around long after he was gone. He was saddened by the decline in pride and responsibility in the current building market. Slim died on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City from congestive heart disease. Survivors include his wife, Shirley of North English, six children: Kathy Warfield of Sigourney, Janean (Bob) Blake of Marion, John Holeton of South English, David (Laura) Holeton of North English, Susan Holeton of Sigourney and Kirk (Linda) Holeton of South English, 2 brothers, Cecil of Muscatine and Marvin (Kathy) of Oxford; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Byron, Otis and Wayne; two sisters: Leta Aggson and Manie Conaway; and his father-in-law; Leonard “Curly” Kirkpatrick. A general memorial fund has been established in lieu of flowers or gifts.

Williamsburg - Ronald Gene Gahring of Newnan Georgia formerly of Williamsburg, died Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the Piedmont Newnan Hospital in Newnan Georgia after a long illness at the age of 66 years. Ronald Gene Gahring was born icon May 23, 1942 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Dwight A. and Ruth (Kleinmeyer) Gahring. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1960. Ron was united in marriage to Myra Gray on March 13, 1961 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. After their marriage Ron went into the Army, the couple lived in Ft. Benning GA, Ft.Scoffield Hawaii returning to Williamsburg then Arizona, before coming back to Williamsburg in 1968. In 1986 they moved to Georgia. Ron worked in construction doing drudging work. He was very interested in history from the Bible to the Civil War. Ron was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Ron is survived by his wife Myra; three sons: Doug (Kerilee) Gahring and Tim (Mary) Gahring all of Newnan, GA and John (Lynn) Gahring of Homestead; his mother: Ruth Gahring of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren: Tyler and Kyle Gahring, Derek and Courtney Gahring, Logan, Grayson and Abbie Gahring; three brothers: Donald (Barb) Gahring of Texas, Bill (Melaine) Gahring of Dawson, GA and Dale ( Barbara) Gahring of Williamsburg; a sister: Susan (Steve) Ahrens of Conroy; father-in-law: Don Gray of Clarinda and a sister-in-law: Jane Blair of Spirit Lake, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father in 1992, a infant sister: Linda Gahring and a brother-in-law: Ed Blair. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Pastor Richard Meyer will officiate. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials are for Immanuel Lutheran Church or Lutheran Interparish School.

Doris Adeline Crossett was born icon September 1, 1924 in Sigourney, Iowa the daughter of Clayton Thomas and Sophia (Duensing) Lowe. She graduated from Sigourney High School. On October 4, 1941 she was united in marriage to Joseph Junior Crossett in Memphis, Missouri. They lived in Wellman, before moving to Princeton, Kentucky in 1961 then to LaGrange, Missouri in 1969 and in 1971 they moved to Washington. Doris worked in the kitchen at the Halcyon House and the Washington Care Center until her retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, crocheting, gardening and fishing. Doris died on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Maplewood Manor in Keota following a short illness at the age of 84 years. Doris is survived by 8 children - Judy Baumert (Dennis) of Keota; Helen Jones of Hazel, TN.; Michael (Cecelia) of Wichita, KS.; Robert (Judy) of Hopkinsville, KY.; Ray (Deanna) of Quincy, IL.; Jeffrey of Keota; Danny of Ankeny; Kevin (Judie) of Ainsworth; 27 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; 3 sisters - Vernalda Yahn of Richland; Eileen Ansley of Newton; Eva Thayer of Madison, Indiana; 3 brothers - Bernard Lowe of Las Vegas, NV.; Jack Lowe of Swisher; and Don Lowe of Cabet, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph in May of 1988; a son Mark; and infant daughter Rebecca; 2 sisters Louise and Jean; and 2 brothers Bert and Roy.

A memorial fund has been established for Washington County Hospice.
