Evelyn Whitlock

Evelyn Whitlock, 84, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. She was born icon to Robert and Julia (Heagney) Stuchel on Aug. 18, 1927, in Albia. Evelyn graduated from Albia High School and moved to Des Moines where she worked for Anton-Hammond-Dunn for several years. She later worked at KVI until her retirement.

Evelyn was a devoted member of St. Augustin Church. She was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast and an artist, designing her own cards for close family and friends. She had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor that will be missed by all.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Mike of Clive; grandson Scott (Kristen) Moylan of Cleveland, Ohio; siblings, Bill Stuchel of Knoxville, Gary (Rose) Stuchel, Jim (Sharon) Stuchel, and Mary (Albert) Smith all of Albia, Ruth (Bob) Carle of West Des Moines; sister-in-law Janice Stuchel of Indianola, and brother-in-law Dick Romp of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Betty Romp; brothers, Don Stuchel, Bob Stuchel and Stanley Stuchel. Funeral services will be held Friday, at noon, Nov. 18, 2011, at St. Augustin Church in Des Moines, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Dan Allen and the staff at Methodist Hospital for the wonderful care they gave to Evelyn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation.

Juanita Ida Phelps

Juanita Ida Phelps, 98, of Muscatine, died on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at Sunny Brook Assisted Living.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Kevin Gowdy officiated the service. Casket bearers will be her grandsons, David Phelps, Donald Phelps, Doug Phelps, Mike Beason, Howard Snider, Craig Wolf, Tom Phelps, Dan Phelps, Kevin Baab, and Mike Frantz. Burial took place in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Muscatine Humane Society. Juanita was born icon on Nov. 5, 1913, in Muscatine, the daughter of John W. and Hazel Satterwaite Macklan. She married icon Kenneth Dolson Phelps on Dec. 31, 1930, in Rock Island, Ill. He preceded her in death in 1988. She worked for Phelps Brothers Laundry. She was an avid bowler, bowling on several local leagues. She will be missed by her faithful companion, Apache, her poodle. She is survived by one son, Kenneth D. Phelps and wife, Janet, of Moravia; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Donald Phelps; one great-great-granddaughter; and two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Phelps and Rita Phelps.

Patricia Pemberton King

Patricia Pemberton King, age 79 of Albia, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at her home in Albia, under the care of Hospice of Monroe County.

Pat was born icon in Magnolia, Minn. in 1932 to Richard Kenneth Pemberton and Mabel Rogne Pemberton. She grew up in Des Moines and lived most her life in Albia. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College, where she met her husband-to-be, James Emery King, at the swimming pool. After she taught school for a year they were married icon on June 8, 1952 in Des Moines.

Pat is survived by her husband; daughter, Laurie King and son-in-law, Jim Shubin of Novato, Calif.; and a grandson, Austin Ferguson of San Francisco, Calif.

Her son, John Kenneth King was killed in a traffic accident in 1996. She is also survived by Alejandro Gonzalez, a Venezuelan exchange student who lived with the Kings and graduated with John. He resides in New Jersey with his wife, Olexis, and children, Vanessa and Diego. They are also considered family. In Albia, she was a leader in Girl Scouts, Albia Woman's Club, and Beta Sigma Phi. In Ottumwa she belonged to Shakespeare Club and the American Association of University Women. She and Jim shared a devotion to the Alliance for the Mentally Ill, since their son John had schizophrenia. They also devoted many hours to MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network, which is the largest organization that investigates Unidentified Flying Objects. Pat was also active in several organizations of writers - the Iowa Poetry Association, The National League of American Pen Women, the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Ottumwa Writers, and Omega Poetry Group.

Through contact with these groups, she honed her skills, entered contests and won numerous prizes.

Several hundred of her poems and also some fiction and non-fiction stories were published in various periodicals, journals, and newspapers in more than 20 states.

In 2008 she published a book of her poems, Reasons for Hope.

To keep improving her writing, she attended workshops of the Iowa Summer Writing Festival almost every year since its beginning in 1986.

She and Jim took up water skiing and later, windsurfing, and kept at it for many years. In the off-seasons she walked and did other exercises regularly to keep in shape.

Some of Pat's favorite things to do were reading, writing, cooking, and traveling, especially to other countries. Always interested in learning new things, she took several postgraduate courses, read hundreds of books, and studied Spanish. She was an enthusiastic volunteer tutor in adult literacy and in English as a second language. Elderhostel was one of her favorite ways to travel. Pat and Jim traveled to over 70 countries. She also became an Ambassador, giving presentations to community organizations to promote educational travel through Elderhostel, now known as Exploritas.

She regretted not living long enough to travel everywhere, read all the many books on her bookshelf, become really fluent in Spanish, and cook dinners for more friends.

Funeral services were 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 21, 2011 at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home.

Burial was in Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation begn at noon, Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, with family present from 5-8 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Hospice of Monroe County or Albia Public Library.

Arlene Joan Goemaat

Arlene Joan Goemaat, of Lovilia, age 75, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at her residence in Lovilia under the care of Hospice of Central Iowa. She was born icon to Charles and Cornelia (VanderVeer) Miller on March 25, 1936 in Runnels.

Arlene married icon Chester Goemaat on May 18, 1953 in Knoxville. They were blessed with seven children. Arlene retired from Pella Corporation. Chester died on Jan. 21, 2008. She was a member of the New Life Church in Knoxville. She enjoyed canning, baking, painting, playing cards, and especially spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children: Vern Dale (Jayne) Goemaat of Hamilton, Chester Jr. (Diane) Goemaat of Knoxville, Cheryl (Robbie) Long of Osage Beach, Mo., Vince (Kathy) Goemaat of Hamilton, Teresa (Tony) Paterno of Lebanon, Mo., Tamie Goemaat of Lovilia, and Tim Goemaat and Kathi Schelker of Oskaloosa; 24 grandchildren, and 44 great-grandchildren. Arlene is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Chester. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at the Sinnott Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lovilia with Pastor Leo Freel officiating. Burial followed in Hamilton Cemetery. Visitation was Monday, Nov. 21, 2011 opening to the public at 1 p.m. and the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the Sinnott Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lovilia. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Sally Irene Wallace

Sally Irene Wallace, age 79 of Albia, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, under the care of Hospice of Monroe County at Oakwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albia.

Sally was born icon April 22, 1932 in Marysville, to Charles and Nora (Inman) Pettyjohn. She married icon Ted Wallace in September of 1949 in Knoxville.

Sally grew up and attended school in Marysville. She liked to cook and bake, and had quite the collection of porcelain dolls. Sally devoted a lot of her time to helping people in need of food and clothing. She also liked spending time with family and friends. Sally is survived by two daughters, Wanda (Doyle) Long of Albia and Marla Kent of Ottumwa; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister Wilma "June" West; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sally is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ted; three sons, Kevin, Teddy, and Clyde; and 11 siblings. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home, with Rev. Bud Lane officiating. Burial will be in Oak View Cemetery in Albia. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at the funeral home with Sally's family present. An open memorial has been established in Sally's name.

Susan Mae Allison

Susan Mae Allison, age 61 of Albia, passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at Monroe County Hospital in Albia, under the care of Hospice of Monroe County.

Sue was born icon on April 13, 1950 to William and Virginia (LaBare) Bartlow in Des Moines. William later remarried, and step-mother Rose Bartlow helped raise Sue. Sue attended and graduated from William J. Palmer High School in Colorado Springs, Colo. Sue has shared the last 17 years with her significant other Dale Stewart.

Sue was a homemaker while raising her children. She worked in Des Moines at Richmond Gordmans department store as an assistant manager for several years and also at Hawkeye Insurance. For the last 17 years, Sue has worked at the Monroe County Hospital. She was a real people person; always talking to everyone, along with helping them. Sue enjoyed crocheting, and quilting. She liked going gambling, going to flea markets, and attending the Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant. She enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and walking.

Sue enjoyed collecting Indian artifacts and wolves. Sue also had Dachshund dogs that she loved dearly. Sue is survived by her significant other, Dale Stewart of Albia; her children, John (Megan) Taylor of Des Moines and Paul Taylor of South Carolina; and three grandchildren, Sabrina Taylor, Jordyn Eivins, and Jakob Taylor. She is also survived by her mother, Virginia; two brothers, Bill and Jim Bartlow, all of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Sue was preceded in death by her grandparents, father, step-mother, and several aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at the First Christian Church in Albia with Pastor Lynda Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Service Chapel Cemetery in rural Albia. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 25, 2011 at the Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home, with Sue's family present from 5-8 p.m. Friday evening. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Hospice of Monroe County.

Mary Patricia Ryan (1920-2011)

Mary Patricia "Pat" (McGee) Ryan, age 91 of Albia, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, under the care of Hospice of Monroe County, at Monroe Care Center in Albia.

Pat was born icon Aug. 1, 1920 to Connie and Agnes (Sullivan) McGee south of Melrose on her Grandma and Grandpa James McGee's farm; where her parents moved to when they married icon in 1917. She married icon H.G. "Ace" Ryan at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Melrose on Oct. 11, 1941.

After moving into Melrose at a young age, Pat attended first through twelfth Grade, graduating class of 1938. Following graduation, she attended Iowa Success Business School in Ottumwa, and then worked at various businesses in Ottumwa and ended working as an office employee at John Morrell and Company, while Ace served 37 months with the United States Army. In October of 1947, Pat and Ace moved to Albia, where they became members of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and Pat, a member of St. Mary's Altar and Rosary. Pat is survived by her children, Connie Ryan of Ottumwa and Tim (Sheila) Ryan of Albia; and a grandson, Shawn Ryan of Albia. Pat is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Ace; her parents; an infant brother, James; and a brother, Walter. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia; with Father Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Albia. Visitation will open at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home, with family present throughout the day and evening. A Rosary will be led by St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society at 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society, Monroe Care Center, or to Hospice of Monroe County.

Harold Nordquist (1924-2011)

Harold Raymond Nordquist, age 87, a resident at Fairmeadows Village in West Des Moines, formerly of Albia, died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee.

Harold was born icon Aug. 27, 1924, in Gardena, Calif., to Carl and Anna (Ahlberg) Nordquist. He married icon Ruth Shelquist on Jan. 27, 1946, at her parents' home in Albia.

Harold was a World War II veteran, having served 3 1/2 years in the US Navy.

After his discharge he was a baker before working for the US Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 1979.

Harold is survived by his three daughters, Nancy (Bob) Sturtevant of Ft. Collins, Colo., (currently serving in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia), Karen (Gary) Edgington of West Des Moines, and Connie (Darrel) Hohn of Colleyville, Texas; eight grandchildren, David (Heather) Lucas, Carl (Janelle) Lucas, Kari (Eric) Coleman, Kristi (Will) Petersen, Ryan (Lindsay) Edgington, Justin Edgington, Nathan Hohn, Aaron Hohn. Nine great-grandchildren, Karli Lucas, Kyle Lucas, Noah Coleman, Nicholas Coleman, Cameron Fabritz, Annabelle Petersen, Elizabeth Petersen, Avery Edgington, and Isabella Hohn survive Harold. One sister-in-law, Helen Anderson of Bonita Springs, Fla., also survives.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2006; his parents; and one brother, Stanley.

A memorial service with military rites at Oakview Cemetery in Albia will be held in the spring. Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marlene McVeitty (1936-2011)

Marlene Ann McVeitty, age 75 of Colfax, formerly of Lovilia, died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at her home in Colfax.

Marlene was born icon Oct. 7, 1936 to Robert T. and Bernice F. (Way) McVeitty in Albia.

Marlene graduated from Lovilia High School, class of 1954. She worked for Banker's Trust for several years and the Des Moines Independent School District.

Marlene was an active member in the Catholic Church. She volunteered in the Des Moines and Davenport Diocese, along with surrounding communities. She also enjoyed trips to Prairie Meadows.

Marlene is survived by a sister, Karen Kellner of Cleburne, Texas; a niece, Cathy Smith of Rio Vista, Texas; two nephews, Kevin and Christopher Kellner, both of Houston, Texas; and seven great-nieces and nephews.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lovilia; with Fr. Patrick Lumsden officiating.

Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Lovilia. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lovilia.

Memorials may be directed to St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Carol Gillaspie (1931-2011)

Carol Jean Gillaspie, age 79, of Albia, passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Carol was born icon Oct. 13, 1931 near Blakesburg to Ralph and Cora (Stocker) Tubaugh. She married icon Jerold Hiatt Gillaspie on March 2, 1951 in Belle Plaine. They were blessed with two children, Jerold Wayne and Mark Hiatt.

Carol graduated from Blakesburg High School. She studied business at Kirkwood Community College. Carol worked for P&W Trucking Company, and the PMA office. She worked for the school system for 32 years as a teacher, secretary at the high school, and secretary of the school board, and also worked for a short period at H&R Block. Carol attended the Open Bible Church in Pella and was a previous member of the World Wide Church of God, Master Gardeners, Retired Teachers, and was on the Cemetery Association Board. Carol was very active in volunteering for Prison Fellowship Ministries from 1998-2009 with the IFI Program. She loved working with the prison inmates and their families. Because of her volunteer work, she received a Governor's Volunteer Award from Governor Vilsack. She enjoyed reading, history, supporting the FFA, and loved baseball.

She also loved spending time outdoors. Family was everything to Carol. She enjoyed spending time with and being supportive of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carol is survived by her husband Jerold Gillaspie of Albia; two children, Jerold Wayne Gillaspie and Mark Hiatt (Cynthia) Gillaspie; six grandchildren, Matthew (Amy) Gillaspie, Justin Gillaspie, Amanda (Joshua) Hoelzel, Gary (Melanie) Gillaspie, Jason (Danielle) Gillaspie, and Derek (Jennifer) Gillaspie; 17 great-grandchildren, Tyler Hollier, Michael Gillaspie, Alexis Gillaspie, Lizbeth Hoelzel, Timothy White, Gregary Gillaspie, Joselynn Gillaspie, Colton Gillaspie, Carolynn Gillaspie, Edynn Gillaspie, Samantha Gillaspie, Taylor Gillaspie, Brandon Gillaspie, Rielly Gillaspie, Keegan Gillaspie, Jack Gillaspie, and Sydney Gillaspie; two brothers, Gerald and Larry Tubaugh; and a sister, Mary Haller; one spiritual daughter, Mickey (Terry) Pope; and two spiritual grandsons, Terrence and Jordan Pope. Carol was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Betty Israel. Memorial services were 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 10, 2011 at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Adam Goetzke officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia. Visitation was from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011 at the funeral home, with Carol's family present from 4-8 p.m. An open memorial has been established in Carol's name.
