Waldo L. Storie 1929-2011

Waldo Lawrence Storie, age 81, of Albia, died Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Oakwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albia.

Waldo was born icon on December 9, 1929 at home in Derby, Iowa to Isaac Washington and Claire Maxine (Snook) Storie. He married icon Joan Tacker in Russell, Iowa on February 21, 1957.

Waldo graduated from Derby High School. He joined the National Guard and later worked as a mechanic for International Harvester.

He was very mechanically inclined. He also worked for Norris and did small engine repair from his garage at home. Waldo was a social member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4167, and a member of the American Legion Howard Cessna Post #136 and Fraternal Order of Eagles, where he served as Secretary and past President.

He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and mushroom hunting.

He also liked watching NASCAR and baseball. Waldo was very kind hearted, and family was always important to him. Waldo is survived by his wife, Joan; four children, Dee (Lennie) Toopes of Albia, Carol (Doug) Robinson of Albia, JoAnn (Tom) Vander Veer of Beacon, and Lisa (Jeff) Harris of Albia; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Jo (Marlin) Querry of Chariton; and several nieces and nephews.

Waldo was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Melvin Dwayne.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia with Pastor Neil Montz officiating. Military Rites will be provided by the American Legion, Howard Cessna Post #136. A Final Tribute will be provided by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will open to the public at 10:00 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with family present from 12-2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Hospice of Monroe County or to the family.

Verda Alberta Cash (1920-2011)

Verda Alberta Cash, age 91, of Centerville, formerly of Albia, passed away on Monday, Sept.19, 2011, at the Continental Care Center in Seymour after a long battle with leukemia.

Verda was born icon Aug. 8, 1920 in Lucas County to Leslie and Beulah (Peterson) Larrington. She married icon Andrew Walberg in 1940. She later married icon William Keith Cash in 1974.

Verda graduated from Chariton High School in 1938 with a degree in Normal Training and later graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.

She was an active member in 4-H Club and later served as 4-H leader.

She taught country school in Lucas County.

In 1954 Verda moved to Albia with her two children, Jean and Gary.

She worked for Rural Electric Coop and later owned and operated the first Mode-O-Day dress shop in Albia.

After selling the dress shop, she went to work for Iowa Southern Utilities for six years.

Verda retired in 1974 but continued to work part-time for Peoples National Bank, Albia Auto Supply and her husband's law firm, Cash Law Firm.

Following the death of her husband, Keith Cash in 1996 and daughter, Jean Ann (Murphy) Hartman in 2002, Verda moved to Centerville to be near her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Roberta Walberg. Verda is survived by her son Gary Walberg (wife Roberta) of Centerville; six grandchildren, Joni Halford (husband Dennis) of Kaufman, Texas, Michael L. Murphy of Ankeny, Mark Murphy (wife Kim) of Albia, Jennifer Sinclair (husband Mike) of Greenwood, Ind., Scott Walberg (wife Tinna) of Des Moines, and Todd Walberg of Cedar Rapids, nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly Shannon of Odessa, Texas, and Barbara Hiserodt (husband Donald) of Prescott, Ariz.; two brothers, Verland Larrington (wife Jessie) of Chariton and Wendall Larrington (wife Lorraine) of Chariton.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Sinnott Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Albia with Larry Bettis officiating.

Burial followed in Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation took place on Wednesday from 2-8 p.m., at Sinnott Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Albia.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church of Albia or HCI Care Services.

Janice "Jenny" Mae McNeal (1943-2011)

Jenny Mae McNeal, age 67, of Albia passed away early Wednesday morning, Aug. 31, 2011, at Monroe County Hospital in Albia.

Jenny was born icon on Oct. 11, 1943 in Des Moines to Bob and Anna Mae (Gilmore) Seibert. She worked at Chicago Rivet for 35 years and also at Snack Shack for a period of time because she enjoyed seeing everyone that came through.

Jenny enjoyed crocheting, double chocolate malts, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and having picnics at the Haydock Bridge.

She was a huge fan of Albia Blue Demon football and wrestling.

She also liked to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, and golf on TV. Jenny was a very giving person.

Family was important to her and she loved spending time with her grandchildren, family, and friends.

Jenny is survived by a special friend of 11 years, George Stephens; a daughter, Patty Chance of Albia; George's daughters, Susan Crane and Lisa Stephens; her grandchildren, Lindsi (Jim) Gritman of Albia and William Chance (Samantha Vanderecken) of Albia; George's grandchildren, Samantha Stephens and Christa Grothe; four great-grandchildren, Hanna Mae, KayLee Fay, Macie Marie, and Logan James; and three step-great grandchildren, Courtney, Brittney, and Harley. She is also survived by a sister, Cheri (John) Dicks of Albia; a brother, Bobby Dow Seibert of Las Vegas; a half sister, Denise Seibert; three step brothers, Richard, Bob, and Ronnie Clark; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Jenny was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Angela Jo McNeal and Jenny Louise McNeal; a step sister, Twyla Townsend; and a step brother, Bill Clark.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday Sept. 3, 2011 at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia with Pastor Brad Goeman officiating.

A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at the Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia.

Janice's family will be present from 6-8 p.m. An open memorial has been established.

Lyle “Louie” Dean Shaffer (1935-2011)

Lyle "Louie" Dean Shaffer, age 75, of Knoxville passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at his home in Knoxville.

Lyle was born icon on September 10, 1935, in Newton to Clifton and Ruth (Bennett) Shaffer. After Ruth's passing, Clifton married icon Velma Hodges.

He attended country school and later attended school in Knoxville.

Louie worked as a laborer all of his life working at the sand plant, K and W Underground Cable and he helped build Red Rock Dam.

On June 18, 1994 Louie married icon Tina See in Olathe, Kansas. Louie enjoyed country music, being outdoors, fishing, mushroom hunting, taking rides, and watching wildlife.

He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Tina Shaffer of Knoxville; his four children, Danny (Lucy) Shaffer of Ottumwa, Debbie Gaffey and Randy Robnett of Exline, Dave Shaffer of Knoxville, and Dodie Shaffer and Darryn Dugan of Knoxville; eleven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Lyle is also survived by three brothers, Larry, Lowell, and Les Shaffer; a brother-in-law, Joe See; two aunts, Beulah McDaniel and Helen DeHaai; a friend, Chelsea Mundy; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson; and two infant sisters. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 25, 2011 at the Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia. Burial will follow services at Hamilton Cemetery in Hamilton. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia, with Louie's family present from 4 to 6:00 p.m.

Memorials have been established to the family or to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Mary Jo Courtney (1950-2011)

Mary Jo Courtney, age 60, of Albia died Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Oakwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albia.

Mary Jo was born icon in Cedar Rapids, IA on October 6, 1950. Prior to moving to Albia, Mary Jo lived in Tacoma, Washington. She later graduated from Albia High School. She attended the Hiteman Methodist Church and then joined Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia, where she sang in the choir and played the Accordion. She worked at Chamberlains making doors, windows, and ladders. While working at Chamberlains, Mary Jo lived with her grandparents, Tom and Elizabeth Ryan, in a coal mining camp in Hiteman.

She enjoyed her stuffed animals, music, and doing word searches. Mary Jo is survived by a younger brother and cousins, and is preceded in death by her grandparents. Visitation will be held from 10 AM until 12:00 PM (noon) on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home with a graveside service to follow at Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

John Mellick (1928-2011)

John Lawrence "Sam" Mellick, age 83, of Hiteman, passed away Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia, under the care of Care Initiatives.

Sam was born icon on Sept. 21, 1928 in Albia to Kate Mellick. Kate later married icon John Hughes. Sam married icon Doris Louise Barker on Dec. 20, 1952 at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Lovilia. They shared 58 loving years together.

Sam served his country proudly in the United States Army from 1950-1952 in Korea.

He retired from Maytag in 1980 after 30 years and drove a school bus for the Newton schools.

After moving to Hiteman in 1984, he drove a bus for the Albia Schools for 10 years.

Sam was a member of Community of Christ Church in Oskaloosa, the American Legion Howard Cessna Post #136 since 1952 and a life member of the VFW.

He was Commander of the VFW for 10 years.

He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, fishing, coffee time with friends, and raising horses and cattle.

He also loved time spent with grandkids and family.

Sam is survived by his wife, Doris of Hiteman; two children, Ann of Hiteman and Mike of Newton; five grandchildren, Jacob, Josh (Melissa) Calhoun, Paul (Rachelle), Ryan (Crystal), and Curt (Caitlin) Mellick; 12 great-grandchildren, Victoria, Tyler, and Shania Calhoun, Nathan and Kyle Calhoun, Benjamin, Kristin, and Lorin Mellick, and Liberty, Caleb, Joshua, and Nathaniel Mellick; two great-great-grandchildren, Tray and Alyvia; a special aunt, Edna Dooley; a step-sister, Mary (Bill) Kehl of Dubuque; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kate and step-father, John Hughes; a son, Jeff; a great-grandchild, Corbin Mellick, son of Ryan and Crystal; 10 aunts; two uncles; and two step-brothers, Francis and Dan Hughes. Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia, with Rev. Connie Sneller and Rev. Lois Behrens officiating. Military Rites will be provided by American Legion Howard Cessna Post #136, with burial at a later date. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28, 2011 at the funeral home, with Sam's family present from 6-8 p.m. There will also be visitation from 10-11 a.m. Saturday morning at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Ministerial Association, or Community of Christ Church in Oskaloosa.
