August 'Augie' Gureno, 61, of 4435 Westchester Dr N.E., died Sunday April 28, 2002 in his home surrounded by his family following a brief illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Friday at St Matthew Catholic Church. Burial: Private. The Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where a wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m.
Survivors include his wife Mary Ann, his children, Molly Rooney and husband Mike of Cedar Rapids, Kelly Mumaw of Cedar Rapids and Mark Mumaw of Coggon, Augie Gureno and wife Stephanie of Aurora, Il, and Joe Gureno of Cedar Rapids, two sisters, Mary Jo Randall of Solon and Judy Glassgow and husband Bill of Huntley,Il, 5 grandchildren, Jack and Josie Rooney, Remy and McKenna Mumaw and Kaitlyn Gureno.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Augie was born in Cedar Rapids, the son of August Gureno and Josephine Scolaro Gureno. He married Mary Ann Giblin on February 17, 1968 in Cedar Rapids. Augie was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He initially taught and coached at Regis High School in Cedar Rapids. For the past 30 years he worked in the financial Investment field, most recently as Vice President/Investments of A.G. Edwards and Sons. Augie will be missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his generosity, integrity, humor and his yearly Christmas letters.

Coletta A. Bender, 67, of 280 Thunderbird Rd. SE, died Friday evening, April 26, 2002, in her home surrounded by her loving family. Services: 10 AM Tuesday at First Congregational Church by Rev. Matthew W. Noffke, Rev. Dr. Glenn D. Hunt, and Pastor Barbra A. Keiper. Inurnment in Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Monday and at the church after 9:30 AM on Tuesday.
Her family includes her husband, The Rev. Dr. Glenn N. Bender, a daughter Melanie Bender of Arlington Heights, Illinois; a son, Clark Bender and wife Kim Kerbis of Denver, Colorado; a brother, Ernest Kratz and wife Marilyn of Yankton, South Dakota; a sister Kay and husband Glenn Schoenfish, of Kansas City, Kansas; a sister Marsha and husband Rollie Beran of Crofton, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Coletta was born September 26, 1934 in Olivet, South Dakota, to Clarence R. and Helen Lundborg Kratz. She married Glenn N. Bender on December 23, 1953, in Olivet.
Coletta worked as an executive secretary in Alaska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, and as a representative for Welcome Wagon International in Iowa for 16 years.
Her education was in liberal arts and literature. She was gracious, intelligent, well-read, insightful, and had a great sense of humor. Coletta loved music and was an accomplished pianist.
She belonged to The PEO Sisterhood, Chapter LU. She was a member of First Congregational Church and a faithful partner with her husband in the Christian ministry.
Coletta loved her family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A memorial fund has been established.

Dylan Bram McCort

Dylan Bram McCort, 20 of 1261 1st Ave. SE died Monday, April 29, 2002 at his home after a sudden illness. Services at 11 AM on Sat. at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 9 PM on Friday and at the Chapel after 10 AM on Sat.
Survivors include his parents, Glen and Karen McCort of Cedar Rapids, his sister, Cara and brother, Mason both at home. Also survived by his grandparents, Donald and Bethel Sieck Sr. of Fayette, Don and Evangeline McCort of Ft. Myers, FL., his girl friend, Shannon Carter of Cedar Rapids and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Dylan was born on March 6, 1982 in Boone, the son of Glen and Karen Sieck McCort. He graduated from Washington High School in 2000. Dylan attended the University of Iowa, Kirkwood and most recently worked at Target West. He was exceptionally gifted in music; playing the violin, keyboard, guitar and drums. He was compassionate, creative, kind and a wonderful person. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Dylan's name.

Miranda A. Meek Frank, 85, of 3330 Chester Rd. died Thursday, May 2, 2002 at St. Lukes Hospital after a brief illness. Services at 11 AM on Monday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday.
Survivors include her husband, Patrick, a son, Donald Meek and his wife, Susan of Cedar Rapids, a daughter, Carol Tasler and her husband, Rev. Robert of Castle Rock, Col., a step daughter, Jennifer Frank of Dallas, TX., and a step son, Brian Frank of Littleton, Col. Also survived by grandchildren, Kathryn Sue Meek of New York City, Brian Tasler of Denver, Col. and Charles Tasler and his wife, Debbie of Ocala, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Paul Steffens.
Miranda was born on April 15, 1917 in Bloomfield, NE. the daughter of Carl and Martha Krohn Steffens. She married Howard W. Meek on Oct. 8, 1939 in Chicago Height, Ill. He died in 1988. She later married Patrick Frank on March 25, 1990 in Cedar Rapids. Miranda graduated from St. Lukes School of Nursing and worked for many years for Dr. John Troxel. She later worked as Director of Nurses at New Horizons, an intermediate care facility for severe and profoundly retarded children who were also non-ambulatory. This was the first facility in the State of Iowa. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where memorials may be given in her name or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Jack R. VanderWeg

Jack R. VanderWeg, 73, of Colorado Springs and a former resident of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday at the Mt. St. Francis Nursing Center in Colorado Springs, following a short illness. Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Lovely Lane United Methodist Church by Rev. Brian Milford officiating. Private burial will take place prior to the memorial service at the church. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Surviving are two daughters, Sue Robbins (Jeffrey) and their children, Jeffrey II, Patrick, Linda and Jessica and Linda O'Brine (Michael) and their children Cara and Sean. Also surviving are six sisters, Delores (Paige) Buerger of Monona, Iowa, Jacqueline (Alton) Korsvik of Prosser, Washington, Devon (Bud) Schab of Villah, Washington, Betty (Leonard) Blaak of Kennewick, Washington, Wanda Thompson of Kennewick, Washington and Judy (Casey) Cummings of Renton, Washington and a brother, Robert (Shirley) Kleinow of Tillamook, Oregon, and many nieces and nephews.
Jack was born July 26, 1928 in Victorville, California to John and Ethel (Coates) VanderWeg and was married to Donna Rae Johnson on July 18, 1953 in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death in 1995. He lived his formative years in Postville, Iowa, graduating from Postville High School, Class of 1946. He joined the Navy right out of high school and attended one year at the University of Iowa. He was formerly employed by Hawkeye Seed Company and then Armstrong's Department Store in men's clothing for 38 years prior to his retirement.
He was a charter member of Lovely Lane United Methodist Church and then at the Sunrise United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs after moving there in 1992.
Friends may, if they wish, make memorial contributions to the Lovely Lane United Methodist Church.

Dorris F. Hanover

Dorris F. Hanover, 81, of 446 18th Street NW, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 in Linn Manor Care Center in Marion, following a long and courageous battle against cancer. Services at 10 AM Friday in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Rev. Randy Kasch will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday and at the church after 9:30 AM on Friday.
Survivors include her husband Clayton, two sons Larry Hanover and wife Robin of Marion, and Daniel Hanover of Brooklyn, Iowa, a daughter Barbara Richardson of Marion, and three grandchildren, Wendy Hanover and Todd and Brett Richardson. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Virginia Heiss and Cleta Meyers, and a brother Charles Votava.
Dorris was born December 23, 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri to Yaro and Ruth Smith Votava. She married Clayton E. Hanover on December 27, 1938 in Vinton, Iowa. She worked in accounting at Penick - Ford for 15 years and then was one of the first meter maids for the Cedar Rapids Police Department. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
Dorris was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Joseph J. Karam, 61 of Beirut, Lebanon, died Thursday, May 2, 2002 at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of an apparent heart attack. Services at 12:30 PM on Sat. at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Mausoleum. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Friday where there will be a vigil service at 7 PM. Friends may also call at the Church after 11:30 AM on Sat.
Survivors include his wife, Wadad, a son Marc, three daughters, Carla Pecinovsky of Ft. Knox, KY., Rania and Christel Karam , his mother, Mary Karam, three brothers, George, Michel, Tony, two sisters, Alice and Rose Karam all of Beirut, Lebanon. He was preceded in death by his father.
Joseph was born on Jan. 8, 1941 in Beirut, Lebanon, the son of John and Mary Karam. He married Wadad Sader on Jan. 2, 1974 in Beirut. Joseph owned and operated a confectionary company in Beirut for many years. He was a devote Catholic and family man who will be greatly missed. A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Howard M. Packingham

Howard M. Packingham, 79, of 4160 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in Mercy Medical Center of Congestive Heart Failure. Services with Masonic Rites at 2 PM Sunday in Kenwood Park United Methodist Church by Rev. Dave Higdon. Burial with military honors in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 3 to 6 PM on Saturday and at the Church after 1:30 PM on Sunday.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Doris, three sons, Larry (Shirley) & Jack (Susan) of Cedar Rapids, Douglas (Diane) Kansas City, 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Truman and Eva Packingham, four brothers and two sisters.
Howard was born April 17, 1922 in Toronto, South Dakota. He married Doris McClurg on May 30, 1941, in Palo, Iowa.
He attended Palo School graduating in 1940. He worked for Rock Island Arsenal and then served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1945. He was co-owner of Packingham Heating. He was employed by Chandler Pump Company and worked for Cedar Rapids Sheetmetal for over 30 years retiring in 1986. He was a longtime member of Kenwood Park United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee for several years and also served on other committees in the church.
A true craftsman his vocation is in sheetmetal and his avocation is in exquisite woodworking donating many toys to Tanager Place. His Masonic journey began in Davenport Lodge #626 in 1944. In 1946 he transferred his membership to Cedar Rapids Mt. Hermon Lodge No 263. On April 7, 1966 he became a charter member of Bruce Masonic Lodge No 665 serving as Worshipful Master in 1971. He was a member of Bruce Lodge at the time of his death. He served as Senior Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge Of Iowa in 1974 and in 1981 was elected Junior Warden. He also held the rank and honor of Inspector General Honorary of the 33 degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. He was a Past Patron of Malta Chapter No 415 Order of Eastern Star. Other Masonic affiliations include, Iowa Research Lodge No 2, Elkahir Shrine, Amber Grotto, and Trowel Chapter No 49 R.A.M., Palestine Council No 27 R, R & S.M., and Apollo Commandery No 26, K.T. all of Cedar Rapids.
Howard's 58 years of dedicated and unselfish service to the Masonic Fraternity earned for him the title 'Mr. Masonry'. Howard will be fondly remembered for his love of family and commitment to God. His willingness to help others. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Instead of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to Kenwood Park United Methodist Church.
Military honors by Marion American Legion Post No 298. Masonic rites by Bruce Masonic Lodge No 665.
