Robert Martin
Services for Robert B. Martin, 68, of Davenport are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Bob died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Genesis West, Davenport.
He was born Nov. 7, 1937, in Grand Mound, Iowa, to Melvin and Esther (McManus) Martin. He married
Ardith Espe in 1962.
He was former owner of Ardy & Bob's Hairstyling Salon, and Phase III Hair Designers, Davenport as well as Designers III in Muscatine, Iowa.
Survivors are son, Tony, Davenport; sisters, Collette Conroy and Esther Flemang, both of Grand Mound, and Dolores Carleton, Davenport; and brothers, Bill Martin, Calamus, Iowa, and Don Martin, Holiday, Fla. He was preceded by a son, Troy, Nov. 22, 2005.
Edwin Baker
Dr. Edwin F. Baker, 95, of Rock Island, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.
Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Moline, is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to Canton Salvation Army, Lewistown Presbyterian Church or Canton Presbyterian Church, where he was a member.
Edwin was born April 2, 1910, in Belvidere, Ill., to Edwin and Anna J. Cuningham Baker. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 1935. He completed his general practice internship at University and Cook County Hospitals in Chicago. In 1938, he married
Mildred Mangan-Short in Tipton, Iowa.
Edwin served for four years as a flight surgeon in the Army Air Forces during World War II. After serving in World War II, he started his practice in Lewistown, Ill., and traveled throughout Spoon River country. He also served 13 years on the Lewistown School Board. He moved to Canton, Ill., 15 years later. He was an active member of the Graham Hospital staff. He served many years as secretary and on the executive committee. Edwin retired from the practice of medicine in 1989.
Edwin was an active member of the Fulton County Medical Society, Illinois State Medical Society and American Medical Association. He was chairman of the State Public Relations Committee, Mississippi Valley Medical Society and Interstate Postgraduate Society. He was on the board at the Fulton County Health Department for 17 years. He was a member of the Salvation Army board for 20 years. He was also a 32-year member of the Canton Rotary Club, American Cancer Society, Meals on Wheels and Fisherman's Club.

Joseph Busolo
Joseph A. Busolo, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at his home in Denton, Texas.
He was born Jan. 23, 1935, in Chicago, to the late Alex and Mary Busolo. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran before he married
Pauline Migliaccio in 1960 in Chicago. He resided in Rock Island and worked as a construction worker until his retirement in 1985. He later moved to Biloxi, Miss., where he was a dice dealer at the Isle of Capri Casino for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pauline Busolo; his two daughters, Sheryl and Dina; granddaughter, Jamie; and grandson, Joseph. He was preceded in death by his three older brothers and three older sisters.
He was stubborn and bull-headed with an unusual sense of humor and the most handsome father you could ever have. He will be severely missed.
Berdina Olson
Berdina Clarice Bertha Olson, 91, of Davenport Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Davenport, formerly of Rock Island, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at the nursing center.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the church. Interment will take place in Immanuel Lutheran cemetery , Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Davenport Good Samaritan Nursing Center. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family.
Berdina was born June 6, 1914, in Hampton, Neb., daughter of Richard Otto David and Clara Ristau Parpart. She married
Bernard T. Olson Aug. 28, 1935, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Berdina was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Island for more than 80 years, having joined at the age of 8, and graduated from eighth grade at the church school. Active in many church activities, she was a charter member of the Altar Guild and was especially fond of sewing paraments, making baptismal napkins, and maintaining all of the altar linens.
She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and making quilts. She loved her big yard, vegetable and flower gardens alike. She and her husband, Bernard, held a membership at Oakview Country Club in Aledo for many years, where they both enjoyed playing golf.
Survivors (and spouses) include daughters, Diane C. Mueller, Davenport, and Doreen B. (Russell) Marquis, Spring, Texas; son, David B. (Jean) Olson, Sioux Falls, S.D.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her parents and husband preceded her in death.
Robert Guss
Funeral services for Robert L. Guss Sr., 91, of Moline, are noon Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Burial is in National cemetery , Arsenal Island, where East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is two hours prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
Robert was born Oct. 5, 1914, in Marion, Ind., son of Charles and Edna Middleton Guss. He married
Leona Ostrand July 1, 1935, in East Moline. Robert served in the Navy during World War II. He retired in the early 1970s from John Deere Plow Planter as a mechanical tool and die maker. He enjoyed watching his sons and grandsons race stock cars.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Leona; children (and spouses), Barbara Allen, Coal Valley, Robert (DeAnna) Guss Jr., Moline, Raymond Carl (Margaret) Guss, Calhoun, Ga., Annette (Earl) Anderson, Moline, and Harry Allen (Donna) Guss, Moline; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul H. Guss; brothers, Charles and Paul; and two great-great-grandsons.
Catherine `Sue' Holub
Catherine "Sue" Holub, 46, of Moline, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
As she wished, Sue's body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Bettendorf Christian Church, 1426 Tanglefoot Lane. In lieu of flowers, doantions may be made to the family. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Moline, is assisting the family.
Sue was born Dec. 8, 1959, in Leaksville, N.C., to John H. and Ruby Childress Witherspoon. She married
Reed Holub July 14, 1986, in Moline.
Sue loved art, cooking and her dog, Chance, as well as spending time with her family and friends.

Funeral services for Athanasios "Tom" Apostolopoulos, 85, of East Moline, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery , Moline. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, where a Trisagion (prayer) Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Mr. Apostolopoulos died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis. Memorials may be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline.
Athanasios was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Kalamata, Greece, the son of Theodoros and Panaiota Doulis Apostolopoulos. He married
Anastasia "Anna" Halnaridou June 29, 1947, in Thessalonika, Greece.
While living in Greece, he was a police officer. He and his wife moved to the United States in 1974. He worked for Quad City Die Cast for 11 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, where he had served as a board member.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Anna Apostolopoulos, East Moline; sons and daughters-in-law, Theodoros and Noula Apostolopoulos, Thessalonika, Greece, Gus Apostolopoulos, East Moline, George and Deborah Apostolopoulos, Moline; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Sophia Mihalopoulos, East Moline, Frosini Spiropoulos, Kalamata, Greece. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Katherina.
Philomina Ackerson
Philomina "Phil" Ackerson, 76, of Geneseo, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Wright Chapel Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, 405 W. 1st St., Geneseo. Deacon Harley Chaffee will officiate. Burial will be in North cemetery , Geneseo. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright Chapel, where a service by the Women of the Moose will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Philomina Ackerson Memorial Fund.
Philomina Ignacio was born March 20, 1929, in Hilo, Hawaii, daughter of Alexander and Violet McKeague Ignacio. She married
Harold "Gene" Ackerson Feb. 2, 1950, at Sand Island Chapel, Honolulu, Hawaii. The couple lived in Atkinson for 29 years before moving to Geneseo in 1979.
Philomina worked as a waitress for 33 years at the former Deck Restaurant in Geneseo.
She was a member of Women of the Moose 577, Geneseo, and the College of Regents, Geneseo VFW Auxiliary, St. Malachy's Catholic Church and the Friendship Circle.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Gladys and Rich Kropp, Geneseo, and JoAnn Swank, Libertyville, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Sylvia Ackerson, Golden Valley, Ariz.; grandchildren and spouses, Ronni and Shea Wren, Jami Murray, Kevin and Heidi Stanfield, Damien Kropp, Bryan Swank, Jesse Swank, Danielle and Jeff Lee, and Cory and Jamie Sellers; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

John Cessna
John F. Cessna, 76, of rural Mineral, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at the Kewanee Hospital Emergency Room from injuries received from a work-related accident.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annawan. The Rev. Timothy Sauppe will celebrate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery , Annawan. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church, where a parish rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be left to the John Cessna Memorial Fund, which will be distributed to local charities. Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson, is in charge of the arrangements.
John was born Feb. 11, 1929, in Hope, Ill., son of Mont and Ina Tillotson Cessna. He married
Dorothy Croegaert March 31, 1951, in Urbana, Ill.
John was a longtime resident of rural Mineral, where he farmed for more than 50 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annawan, the Holy Name Society of the church, the Knights of Columbus, Cursillo of Peoria Diocese, Bureau County Farm Bureau and the Relay for Life Mineralites. He enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren, traveling, gardening, and, most of all, he loved his family.

Earl Schurvinske
Earl L. Schurvinske, 90, of Geneseo, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. The Rev. Thomas Heyd will officiate. Burial will be in Loraine cemetery , rural Prophetstown. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where Geneseo Moose Lodge 990 will conduct a service of remembrance at 7 p.m. Memorials may be left to the Earl Schurvinske Memorial Fund.
Earl was born Feb. 22, 1915, in Hannah Township, rural Geneseo, son of Fred W. and Minnie Schwark Schurvinske. He married
Irma Jaquet Nov. 25, 1938, in Davenport. She died in 1990.
Earl had been employed at the John Deere Spreader works in the janitorial department for 16 years. He later was a security guard at the John Deere Parts Distribution Center in Milan for 10 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Geneseo, and Geneseo Moose Lodge 990. He enjoyed gardening, being outside, watching nature, watching TV, and he loved his grandchildren.
Survivors include four daughters (and spouses), Eileen Schurvinske, Geneseo, Barb Setterberg, Geneseo, Sharon (Steve) Lofgren, Geneseo, Sandy (Curt) Hilligoss, Geneseo; two sons, Jim Schurvinske, Geneseo, Charles Schurvinske, Geneseo; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; one sister, Inez Schurvinske, Geneseo. He was preceded in death by parents; one son, Robert; a brother and a sister.
Phyllis Sedam
Phyllis C. Sedam, 89, of New Boston, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.
Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at New Boston cemetery . There is no visitation. Fippinger, Aledo, is handling arrangements.
She was born Sept. 14, 1916, to Joseph and Stella Retherford. She married
William Sedam Jr. He died in 1982.
Survivors include sons, Roger (wife, Kaye) Sedam, New Boston, Curtis Sedam, Clearwater, Fla.; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Jacob Whipple-Wakeland
Jacob A. Whipple-Wakeland, stillborn child of Amber Whipple and Barry Wakeland, of New Boston, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, Moline.

Gertrude Cawiezell
Gertrude Dorothea Cawiezell, 93, of Davenport, died Jan. 27, 2006, in Davenport.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran, Davenport. There is no visitation. Runge, Davenport, assisted the family.
She was born April 7, 1912, to William and Dorr Tonn. She married
Lester Ragan. She later married
Carl Cawiezell in September 1965 in Davenport. He died in 1984. She was a loving mother and homemaker.

Joseph F. Mertl Jr., 93, of Bettendorf, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Forest Hill Health and Rehab Center, East Moline.
