Dorothy Gurik
Dorothy C. Gurik, 82, of Moline, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Aspen Rehab and Healthcare Center, Silvis.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, with visitation one hour before at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens), 4016 9th St., Rock Island.

Dorothy was born Oct. 25, 1924, in Moline to Harry and Edith Oline Frick. She married George Gurik Dec. 17, 1944, in Mansfield, Ohio. He preceded her in death Nov. 14, 2006.

Dorothy was a member of First Covenant Church, Moline, and enjoyed making pottery.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Karen Travis, Sandy, Utah, Don Gurik, Peoria, Ill., Patricia (Richard) Johnson, McCausland, Iowa, Susan Gurik, Moline; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Harry L. (Marilyn) Frick Jr., Bettendorf; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary L. Nelson.

John Hansen
John H. Hansen, 99, of Moline, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Burial is in Rose Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline. Visitation is one hour before the services.

John Henry Hansen was born June 10, 1908, in Gilchrist, Ill., the son of John and Gertrude Siemon Hansen. He married Laura Nelson June 30, 1934, in Rockford, Ill. She died Dec. 7, 1983.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in the South Pacific during World War II.

John was manager of the men's department at J.C. Penney's downtown Moline store for 15 years, retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Moline Elks Lodge 556 since 1946, an avid Chicago Cubs fan, a golfer and a sports enthusiast.

John is survived by his niece and her husband, Barbara and Frank Donovan, Bettendorf.

Anna `Peggy' Honzik
Anna S. "Peggy" Honzik, 96, of Moline and Hot Springs Village, Ark., died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at Good Samaritan Campus, Hot Springs Village.

Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline, where she was a member. Visitation is 3 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Entombment is in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Campus, 12 Cortez Road, Hot Springs Village, AR 71909.

The oldest of eight children, the former Anna Sophia Wilkins was born March 16, 1911, in Buffalo Center, Iowa, the daughter of John and Sophia Kordylofsko Wilkins. She married her husband of 51 years, Oswald Honzik, in 1931 and moved to Moline in 1934. He preceded her in death in 1982.

She was employed at Royal Neighbors, Rock Island, for 27 years, retiring in 1976 as an actuarial clerk.

Due to multiple illnesses, Mrs. Honzik lived in Hot Springs Village the past five years with her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mary Ann Honzik.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mary Ann; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Margaret Kalkbrenna, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Geneva Konecky
Geneva M. Konecky, 91, of Moline, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at her home.

As she wished, cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Moline, is assisting the family.

Geneva was born April 23, 1916, in Moline, to Jay and Edna Peters Becker. She married Dr. Phillip Konecky July 23, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo. He preceded her in death in September 2005.

Geneva was a bookkeeper/office manager for Illinois Optical Co. for 31 years, retiring in 1977. She was an avid golfer and life member of Oakwood Country Club, where she played on Oakwood's Waterman Club team for many years. She was a member of Sigma Phi Gamma, McKinley PTA and was an avid bridge player.

Geneva is survived by daughter, Gay (Marsha Jones) Konecky, Springfield, Mo.; son, John (Janet) Konecky, Coal Valley; two grandchildren, Kate (Andrew) Meyer, Moline, Matthew (Ashley) Konecky, Pembroke Pines, Fla.; sister, Virigina M. Rose, Moline; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen Cady
Helen M. Cady, 92, of East Moline, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Catherine `Mick' Bohannon
Catherine "Mick" Bohannon, 73, of Silvis, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Grace Community Church of the Nazarene, Colona, with a memorial luncheon immediately following the service. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. According to Catherine's, wishes, her body will be cremated. Memorials may be made to the family; a portion of the memorial fund will go to Alzheimer's research.

She was born Dec. 14, 1933, in Hannibal, Mo., to Arthur S. and Joyce Izetta Allen Yakes. She married Ozra "Red" Bohannon Nov. 4, 1973, in Carbon Cliff.

She enjoyed ceramics and cross-stitching. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors (and their spouses) are her husband, Red Bohannon, Silvis; daughters, Cathi (Steve) Stoddard Flatt, Colona, Patty Cant, East Moline, Diana (Dave) Fuller, Colona, Betty (Blair) Whitman, Galva, Kimie (Paul) Barger, Branson, Mo.; sons, Sgt. Paul (Georgia) Bohannon, stationed in Kansas City, Kan., currently serving in Iraq, Joe Cramlett, Hannibal, Mo., David Bohannon, East Moline; sister, Betty Mahaffy, Shelbyville, Mo.; brother, Paul Yakes, Kewanee; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; special friend, Linda Carroll. She was preceded in death by son, Donnie Stoddard; son-in-law, Norman Merrill; grandson, Phillip Merrill; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; three brothers.

Steven Briggs
Steven C. Briggs, 59, of Lynn Center, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Orion.

Charles Grant
Charles Leonard Grant, 64, of Montrose, Mich., formerly of Kewanee, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Open Arms Community Church, rural Kewanee. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church and one hour before services. Further arrangements are pending at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee.

Verna Shaw
Verna B. Shaw, of rural Geneseo, passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Private funeral services will be held at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, with burial in Oakwood cemetery , Geneseo. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers or memorials, Verna would like everyone to consider the gift of life by becoming an organ donor.

Verna was born June 7, 1930, in Colona Township. She was united in marriage to Don Shaw on March 23, 1951, in Moline.

Survivors include her husband, Don; five children (and their spouses), Joel (Carol) Shaw, Julie (Steve) Bosold, Joni (Howard) Beck, Judi (John) Heller, and Jill (Marty) DePauw; 12 grandchildren (and a spouse), Meredith (Jared) Garwood, Jordan and Taylor Shaw, Traci, Allison and Tom Bosold, Corbyn and Andrea Beck, Ryan and Robyn Heller, and Devan and Shawn DePauw.

Esther Bassett
Esther Kopaska Bassett, 71, of Eldridge, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Genesis East, Davenport.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Park View Lutheran. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at Chambers, Eldridge.

She was born Feb. 22, 1936, in Iowa to Everett and Opal Herron Kopaska. She married Dean Bassett June 5, 1955.

Surviving are her husband; daughter, Colleen Holland, Bloomington, Ind.; son, Dr. Mark Bassett, Birmingham, Ala.; three granddaughters, Brittany Holmes, Sabrina Holmes, Shelby Bassett; four sisters; one brother.

Lawrence Cosselman
Lawrence H. Cosselman, 73, of Muscatine, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Fejervary Health Care Center, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Runge Mortuary, Davenport.

Lorraine Moore
Lorraine M. "Lori" Moore, 66, of Eldridge, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at her home.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic, Long Grove. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at the church, with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Arrangements are by Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport.

She was born May 22, 1941, in Davenport to Victor and Marie Lannoo Braet. She married Ivan Keppy Moore July 2, 1960.

Surviving are husband; children, Gwen Kline, Cedar Rapids, Brian, Dixon; five grandchildren; siblings, Margaret, James.

John Scott
John A. Scott, 75, of Davenport, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf.

John Shivers Sr.
Funeral services for John Willie Shivers Sr., 61, of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Temple Baptist Church, Davenport, with Bishop Melvin Shivers officiating.

Burial will be in National Cemtery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Orr's Mortuary, Rock Island, is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to the family.

He died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at his home.

Johnnie was born Sept. 24, 1946, in Marion, Ill., the son of Charles L. and Geneva Woods Shivers Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He married Lola Faye Hunter in Davenport Sept. 21, 2007. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Traci, Clinton, Iowa, Felicia, Atlanta, Ga., and Doneshika Shivers, Columbus, Mo.; sons, Rodney, Rock Falls, John Jr., Atlanta, DeShaun, Davenport, Samuel, Denver, Colo., Aundra Shivers, Columbus, Brian Perkins, Davenport, and Brian Lewis, Silvis; mother, Geneva Shivers, Davenport; sisters, Dorothy Shivers, Jackson, Tenn., Janet Shivers-Scott, Davenport, Joyce Allison, Las Vegas, Nev., Audrey Porter, East Moline; brothers, Bishop Melvin, Indianapolis, Ind., Curtis, Milan, Richard, Rock Island, Daniel, Clinton, Herman "Tony," Waldorf, Md., Joel Shivers, Davenport; 26 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; brothers, Ernest, Charles and James Shivers; grandparents, Melvin and Alice Woods and Minnie McNeal.

Marcella Vieth
Marcella Vieth, 87, of Davenport, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Crest Health Care, Davenport.

Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Weerts, Davenport, with visitation at 11 a.m. Burial is in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Friends may share memories from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rusty Nail, Davenport.

She was born in 1920 in Davenport to Tony and Alma Wendland. She married Chester Vieth April 13, 1941. He died Nov. 28, 1988.

Surviving are daughters, Beverly Anderson, Davenport, Kay Santee, Eldridge; son, Ed Vieth, Davenport; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Steck
Beatrice Steck, 93, of Niles, Ill., formerly of Rock Island, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, Ill.

Services are this afternoon at Weinstein Funeral Home, North Shore Chapel, 111 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette. Please call for service time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Beatrice Alper married Benn A. Steck. He is deceased.

Survivors are son, Richard (Arlene); one grandchild; and brother, Stanley (Frances) Alper. She was preceded by a daughter, Barbara Eleanor Steck.

Dorothy M. Briggs, 84, of Cambridge, Ohio, formerly of East Moline, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at Cambridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Mausoleum Chapel in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. No visitation is planned. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dorothy was born May 28, 1923, in Garrison, N.D., a daughter of Richard and Eva Daniels. She married Elmer G. Briggs in San Diego, Calif. He preceded her in death in 1988.

Dorothy was employed with John Deere Intercontinental Ltd. for 20 years. She retired in 1982. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She loved her family and friends.

She is survived by a son, Noel E. Briggs, California; sister, Ilah V. Beaston, Milan; son-in-law, Dan Jackson, Milan; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Elinor M. Jackson; three brothers; and three sisters.
