Herbert Hartman

My Dad, Herbert Stanley Hartman, was born March 14, 1915 to Jesse and Laverna Hartman. He was the second of seven children, five of whom have preceeded him in death: Dale Hartman, Alice Rowan, Richard Hartman, Helen Diewold. Remaining are Kenny Hartman and Audrey Walker, who live in Burlington. During their lives they were a very close family for which I am very thankful and I want them to know that. Living through the depression years made him hardworking and conservative. After serving in the Navy during the war he moved to Cleveland to pursue his love of commercial art. He worked for Ohio Display and Art for several years and was exceptional in his field. While in Cleveland he met my mother, Sylvia Turkovich and they were married May 5, 1951.

About the same time, his brother Richard convinced him to join him in operating a hardware store. Coast To Coast Hardware, now the True Value store on 9th St. will celebrate it's 50 years in business. The year following the opening of the store I was born, his only child, his treasure and trial in life. He has four grandchildren; Jason Fidler of Burlington, Jody Brown of Kansas City, MO, Katy Gallanger of Fairfield, and Dean Gallanger of Chehalis, WA. And to date there are six great grandchildren.

Life to a turn for Dad when the Lord took my mom in October of 1994. But he took Mom's advice that just becauseshe wouldn't be around didn't mean he couldn't make his bed everyday and be neat. No one can say that he wasn't neat and yes, he made his bed everyday.

Dad never went to church or was religious in any way. He thought he didn't need it. But as the time drew near for him to face eternity he found that he did need it. He wanted to know what was on the other side death. On March 21 he asked Jesus to be his savior and was born into God's family. The Bible verse that comforted him was 1John 5:13.

On April 21 late in the evening he went home to see his Father in heaven. I will look forward to seeing him and Mom again. He will be missed greatly by all of us.

I love you Dad, Gail
