Maurice A. Smith Sr., age 65 of Burlington passed away at 12:53 PM Thursday, January 31, 2002 at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.
Born December 14, 1936 in Perry, IA he was the son of John Cedric and Sarah Olive Van Pelt Smith. He married Norma Jean Rice on May 12, 1956 in Morrison, IL.
Mr. Smith was a graduate of Morrison High School in Morrison, IL. He retired from General Electric in 1999. He owned Mauries Ten Pin Tap for nine years. He enjoyed bowling, playing pool, fishing, hunting and the outdoors. He was a longtime blood donor and an organ donor. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Norma, his mother, Sarah; two sons, Maurice (Anne) Smith Jr. of Gladstone, IL and Marty (Laurie) Smith of Burlington; two daughters, Bobbie (Bob) Scovern of West Burlington and Cheryl (Dan) Noble of Burlington; eight grandchildren; one sister, Beverly (Jim) Starr of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Darwin, and one grandson, Darrin.
Upon the request of Mr. Smith, his body has been cremated and there will be no services.

Joseph William Hoschek, age 85 of Rosebush Gardens Health Center passed away at 7:40 PM Monday, February 11, 2002 at the Health Center.
Born July 20, 1916 in Burlington he was the son of Joseph John and Hermine Marie Toegel Hoschek.
Mr. Hoschek was a graduate of St. Paul’s High School. He worked at Northwestern Cabinet Co. and he was a custodian at the Burlington Public Library and at City Hall. He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. He was an avid stamp and old post card collector.
Survivors include one sister-in-law, Dorothy Hoschek of Burlington; two nephews, Larry R. Hoschek of Amarillo, TX and Michael E. Hoschek of Burlington; three great nieces and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Joseph Hoschek.
Friends may call after noon Wednesday, February 13, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 7:30 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Hoschek will be 10:00 AM Thursday, February 14, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . A memorial has been established to Burlington Notre Dame Inc.

Joseph J. Macacia, age 96 of Rosebush Gardens Health Center passed away at 8:15 PM Saturday, February 16, 2002 at the Health Center.
Born January 9, 1906 in Burlington he was the son of Phillip and Anna Maria LoBono Macacia.
Mr. Macacia was a professional Musician. He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church and of the Musicians Union. He loved music, and had played in area bands. He enjoyed his dog, Moe and driving in his Red 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible and traveling.
Survivors include one niece, Delores (Gary) Roberts of West Burlington; one great nephew; one great niece; many great great nieces and nephews and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.
Friends may call after 8:00 AM Wednesday, February 20, at the Hass Funeral Home. There will be no family visitation. The Funeral Service for Mr. Macacia will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 20, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . A memorial has been established to the Animal Protection League.

Eugene “Gene” J. Flaherty age, 82 of Burlington passed away at 1:29 AM Thursday, February 21, 2002 at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.
Born December 20, 1919 in Garber he was the son of Leo and Elizabeth Cassutt Flaherty. He married Lenora T. Riffel October 15, 1949 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dodgeville.
Mr. Flaherty was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran. He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque with a BA in Economics. He worked for the Social Security Administration retiring in 1974. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was an avid gardener and an Iowa Hawkeye’s fan. He enjoyed watching the Southeastern Community College Blackhawk's basketball games.
Survivors include his wife, Lenora; one son, Steven Gene Flaherty of North Liberty; one sister, Elizabeth Kulper of Garber; one step-brother, Donald Flaherty of Bellevue and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call after 8:00 AM Friday, February 22, at the Hass Funeral Home where there will be a Rosary recited at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends after a 6:30 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:00 PM. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church.

Rose P. White, age 78 of Burlington passed away at 7:05 AM Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born July 29, 1923 in Viola, IL she was the daughter of Walter A. and Amy Ruth McDowell Cooksey. She married Gerald Lamb in 1940 in Galesburg, IL. They later divorced. He died in 1963. She then married Lloyd M. White in 1954 in Burlington. He died in 1982.
Mrs. White went to grade school in Galesburg and then to Churchill High School in Galesburg and then went on to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse at Monmouth Hospital and in private homes. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wapello and the American Legion Auxiliary for 30 years. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye’s fan, loved to cook, help people, enjoyed friends, and her church and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Allen Lamb of Larnie, Ireland; one daughter, Mary J. Huston of West Burlington; six grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one brother, Walter J. Cooksey of Graysville, Georgia; two sisters, Helen Deethardt and Maxine Mohler both of Burlington; and eight nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents and one younger brother.
Friends may call after 8:00 AM Thursday, February 28, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. The Funeral Service for Mrs. White will be 11:00 AM Thursday, February 28, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Reverend Chris Hinkle officiating. Pallbearers will be Mark Talley, Wayne Talley, David Tweed, Michael Purcell, Daniel Chandler, Rodney Haight, and Levi Jones. Interment will be in Fairmount Cemetery
in Davenport at 2:30 PM Thursday. A memorial has been established in memory of Mrs. Rose P. White.

Mary Elizabeth Dugan, age 83 of Morning Sun Care Center in Morning Sun, formerly of Burlington, passed away at 12:15 AM Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Care Center.
Born February 8, 1919 in Burlington she was the daughter of Thomas and Anna Decker Dugan.
Miss Dugan was a 1936 graduate of St. Paul Central High School, and a graduate of Clarke College and the University of Illinois, with a Masters degree. She was the former head librarian at the Burlington Public Library. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, its Alter & Rosary Society and the Legion of Mary. She was a member of the Clarke College Alumni – University Women and the Burlington Garden Club. She loved books, flowers, traveling to Alaska, Ireland, Paris, France, and other trips. She also enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include one brother, James T. Dugan of Bloomsbury, New Jersey; several nieces and nephews; cousins including, Alice Dugan of Burlington, Grace Decker and Margaret Ellerhoff both of West Burlington. She was preceded in death by her parents, and several Aunts.
The body of Mrs. Dugan has been cremated. Friends may call after noon Sunday, March 3, at the Hass Funeral Home until 7:00 PM. There will be no family visitation. The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Miss Dugan will be 10:30 AM Monday, March 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Burlington, with Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . Memorials have been established to the Burlington Public Library and SS. Francis “Murphy” Gene Murphy, age 65 of New London Nursing and Rehab Center in New London, formerly of Burlington passed away at 7:25 AM Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at the Rehab Center after a lengthy terminal illness.
Born June 4, 1936 in Carman, IL he was the son of Lloyd M. and Emma B. Huffstattler Murphy. He married Evelyn J. Vaughn on November 7, 1953 in Burlington.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force after twenty years of service and attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was then employed by Kenan Transportation Co. for seven years before opening his own business, the Do Drop In Used Furniture store in Burlington. He enjoyed going to auctions and was known as and avid bingo player.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Murphy of Wilmington, NC; two daughters, Kathryn Hall of Wilmington, NC and Dorene Brink of El Cajon, CA; two sons, Steven Murphy and David Murphy both of Wilmington, NC; seven grandchildren; and a special dear friend Mary Lou Capps of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Suellen Best-Popp who died February 28, 2002 unexpectedly.
Friends may call after 8:00 AM Monday, March 11, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mr. Murphy will be 1:00 PM Monday, March 11, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Gary L. Chapman of Zion United Church of Christ officiating. Interment with full military honors rendered by VFW Post 3508 and American Legion Post 41 will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery . A memorial has been established.

George B. Ornduff Sr., age 84 of Burlington passed away at 11:23 PM Sunday, March 10, 2002 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City.
Born December 23, 1917 in Abingdon, Virginia he was the son of William Horton and Nora Elizabeth Sparks Ornduff. He married Frances Webb in 1941 in Shreveport, LA.
Mr. Ornduff served four years in the U.S. Navy in WW II working as a repairship supervisor. He was a maintenance supervisor at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for over 38 years. He retired in 1975. He was a life time member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579, and a member of the Moose Legion, VFW Post 10102, American Legion, and the Burlington Gymnastic Society. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Kaaba Shrine Elite Clown. He enjoyed fishing and visiting with people.
Survivors include his wife, Frances; two sons, George B. Ornduff Jr. and Les D. Ornduff of Burlington; one sister, Dorothy Ryan of Bristol, TN and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and two sisters.
Friends may call after 8:00 AM Wednesday, March 13, at the Hass Funeral Home until 7:00 PM. There will be no family visitation. The Moose Rites Funeral Service for Mr. Ornduff will be 10:00 AM Thursday, March 14, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Full Military honors will be rendered by the VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion # 52 and the Marine Corp League at the Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at a later date in Keokuk National Cemetery . In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his name to help his wife who has been a patient at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City since May 5, 1994.
