Leona M. Roggentien Bischof, age 89, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at Colonial Manor of Amana following an extended illness. Funeral services: 1:00 P.M. Friday, February 24, 2006, New Apostolic Church, Cedar Rapids with Rev. Larry Dollmeyer officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Reformed Church Cemetery, Millersburg, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, February 23, 2006, at Kloster Funeral Home, in Marengo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to the New Apostolic Church, Cedar Rapids in her name.
She is survived by a son, Lyle Bischof of Middle Amana; a daughter-in-law, Karen Bischof Ramsey of Middle Amana, a son-in-law, Ivan Graesser of Marion; a brother-in-law, Laurel Seiberth of Lancaster, CA; twelve grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; her grand-dog, Buddy and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, three brothers, Joseph, Ernest and Johnny Roggentien, a sister, Rosa Brown, a daughter, Donna Graesser, a son, Larry Bischof and a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Bischof.
Leona Martha Roggentien was born July 7, 1916 in Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Frances Smith Roggentien. She graduated from Millersburg High School in 1932 and married George Bischof in 1932 at Lancaster, Missouri. Besides being a homemaker, Leona worked in the spinning department of the Amana Woolen Mill and later as a waitress. She moved to Cedar Rapids in 1985. For the past 32 years she has been a faithful member of the New Apostolic Church in Cedar Rapids, always in attendance and enjoying the fellowships provided by the church. She enjoyed gardening, along with her church activities and helping others in need. For the past 8 years, Leona has been residing at Colonial Manor in Middle Amana.

Ruth Ann Johnson, age 80 of Belle Plaine, died Sunday February 5, 2006 at Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center. Celebration of Life Service: 10:45 A.M. Saturday, February 18, 2006, Christ United Methodist Church, Belle Plaine. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until service time at the Christ United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Ruth Anne Shields Johnson was born September 6, 1925 in Belle Plaine, Iowa, the youngest of four children born to Walter W. “Tubby” and Marjorie Greenlee Shields. She attended the Belle Plaine schools and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1943. Ruth enrolled in Pitzy’s Beauty School in Waterloo and graduated in 1945. She married Charles E. “Chuck” Johnson on October 20, 1946n at the Christ United Methodist Church in Belle Plaine. The couple resided in Waterloo for four years and then returned to Belle Plaine. She owned and operated a beauty shop there for many years. Ruth Anne departed this life on February 5, 2006.
Chuck and Ruth were the parents of three children, a son Terry Lee, who died at birth, a daughter Margo Sievers and husband Ron, of Rembrandt, Iowa and a daughter Dawn Francis and husband, Boyd, of Marengo, Iowa. There are also two grandsons, two granddaughters, two great-grandsons, and two step grandchildren.
Ruth Anne belonged to Eastern Star and was Worthy Matron in 1960. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Belle Plaine, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society and many card clubs. She loved to play cards, bake and “tell stories.” She also enjoyed Big Band era music and embroidery work. Wherever she went, she enjoyed teasing others—there was always a twinkle in her eyes and a bit of “quick wit” on her lips. Her personality, positive attitude, and inner strength were among her greatest assets.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Chuck, a son Terry, a sister, Gaynelle Heller and two brothers, Walter and Russell Shields. She leaves her two daughters, their husbands, four grandchildren and families, two step grandchildren, her aunt, Mrs. Pat Greenlee, and many loving family members and wonderful friends.
We are saddened by her loss, but renewed in the celebration of her life! May all who knew her…smile, remember her fondly, and pass the smile on!

Otto C. Zuber, age 93 of Middle Amana, formerly of South Amana, passed from his earthly home to his eternal life on February 12, 2006. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, February 16, 2006, Middle Amana Community Church in Middle Amana. Burial will be in the South Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society, the Amana Arts Guild or the Amana Heritage Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by three daughters, Mary Ann Herring of Omaha, NE Barbara Hollrah and husband Bill of Bella Vista, AR, and Elaine Zuber and husband Dennis of Homestead; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Erna Wendler and husband Walter of Racine, WI, and two sisters-in-law, Minnie Zuber of Kingwood, TX and Louise Hergert of Middle Amana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edna in 1999, a son-in-law, Dale Herring, two brothers, Edmond and Reynold and sisters, Mary Dieckman and Lillian Benner.
Otto Clemens Zuber was born June 4, 1912 in South Amana, the son of Peter and Annie Schuch Zuber. He attended the South Amana School and worked with his father at the South Amana Butcher Shop. At age 22 he became the first employee of Amana Refrigeration, remaining there for 40 years, retiring as a plant engineer in 1974. He married Edna Shoup on February 1, 1936 in South Amana. This 63-year union was blessed with 3 daughters. The couple made their home in South Amana and later in Ft. Meyers, Fl.
Otto was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a community leader, serving on the South Amana Volunteer Fire Department, the Amana Society Board of Directors, and was a member of the Amana Young Men’s Bureau. Music was a large part of his life as he was a song leader for the Amana Church, a member of the Young Men’s Bureau Chorus and the Seven Lakes Mixed Chorus in Ft. Meyer. He most recently participated in the men’s chorus at the Amana Sesquicentennial in July of 2005. Otto was an avid golfer and Cubs fan and enjoyed watching a variety of sports on television.
He sends one last hug to all who knew him and loved him.

Dorothy E. Day, age 86, died Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 18, 2006 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, February 17, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by three daughters, Susan Kreis (Bob) of Marengo, Margaret Foster (Charles) of Salinas, CA, and Donna Bixler (John) of Oskaloosa; 6 grandchildren, Mike Foster, Robert D. Kreis, Betty Rae Kreis, Jim Bixler, John Bixler, and Laurie Valsters, and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert Pershing Day in 2001, a daughter, Betty Rae and a son, Jim Day.
Dorothy Elizabeth Durling, daughter of John and Emma Obermuller Durling, was born, July 17, 1919 at her parents’ home in Marengo, which is now the office of Dr. Susan Davis. By the age of 6, Dorothy was a self-taught piano player and at age 7, she was playing the accordion. She graduated from the Marengo High School in 1937 and operated a beauty shop for several years. She married Robert Pershing Day on March 8, 1953 in LaCrosse, WI. The couple resided in Chicago for several years, returning to Marengo in 1974. Besides being a homemaker and a mother, Dorothy was a member of the Curtis Bennett Band, playing the accordion. She performed at Carl Oehl's restaurant, the Cellar, and at the Colony Market Place in South Amana, and later at Zuber's in Homestead. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Marengo.

Robert Lee Hawkins, age 62, died Monday, January 30, 2006 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo from complications of a stroke. Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. Thursday, February 2, 2006 at the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. Delbert Rankin officiating. Burial will be in the Koszta Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Survivors include his wife, LaRay; five children from a previous marriage, Candi Tompkins (Randy) of Marengo, Terry Hawkins of Koszta, Tracey Hawkins of Belle Plaine, Trevor Hawkins (Christie) of Belle Plaine and Jason Tatge (Shawn) of Gulfport, MS; four stepchildren, David Slaymaker (Angie) of Belle Plaine, Dale Slaymaker (Mindi) of Marengo, Denise Roberts (Nick) of Marengo and Diane Maas (Rich) of Heathsville, VA; and 10 step- grandchildren. In addition he is survived by a sister, Rosemary Noyes of Koszta and 3 brothers, Bill and Russ Hawkins of Marengo, and Roger Hawkins (April) of Altoona.
Robert Lee Hawkins was born July 5, 1943 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Robert M. and Lorna Shaull Hawkins. He attended the Iowa County schools and graduated from Iowa Valley High School in 1961. Robert married LaRay Knipp Slaymaker on February 14, 1978 at the Presbyterian Church in Marengo. He was employed as a feed salesman and applicator at the Marengo Elevator and at Meier Feed. He also worked at B & P Feed from 1988 -1995 and Kinze Manufacturing from 1995 -2004.
Robert enjoyed traveling in his Roadtrek motorhome, tractors, fishing, and drag-racing. He was an avid gardener.

Helen E. Jones, age 97, died Sunday, January 29, 2006 at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg, following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 2, 2006, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Williamsburg where there will be a Scripture Service at 6:30 P.M. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a brother, Glenn McCabe of Williamsburg and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Truman in January 1969; 3 sisters, Sr. Ann Marita McCabe, Marietta Schamberger, and Margaret Louberto; and 3 brothers, Edward, James and Harold McCabe.
Helen Elizabeth McCabe was born December 13, 1908 in Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of John F. and Maude Mary White McCabe. She attended the Williamsburg schools and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1927. She married Truman Aubrey Jones on August 19, 1935 at St. Mary’s Rectory in Williamsburg. Helen was employed in various businesses around Williamsburg, most recently as an office clerk with the ASCS office in Williamsburg. She retired from there in 1965 after 20 years of employment.
Helen was a member of the Iowa County Historical Society, the Williamsburg American Legion Auxiliary, and the Royal Neighbors of America. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg, St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society, St. Mary’s Cemetery Board, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, reading, and crossword puzzles. Helen was an avid letter writer, and enjoyed writing poetry.

Lina Christina Rettig, age 90, died Thursday morning, February 2, 2006 at Colonial Manor Care Center, following a long illness with Alzheimer’s Disease. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, February 6, 2006 at the Middle Amana Community Church in Middle Amana with Elder Peter Hoehnle officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday, February 5, 2006 at the Middle Amana Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include three children, Lawrence L. Rettig (Wilma) of South Amana, Bonnie J. Hertel (Stan) of Middle Amana, and Rosemary A. Houser (David) of Moatsville, West Virginia, and three grandchildren, Robin Rettig, Keegan Houser and Kaleigh Houser. Also surviving are a sister, Rose Leonhardt, a brother, Harry Leonhardt, three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Parvin, Anne Leonhardt and Mary Leonhardt Schupanitz, and countless friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, her parents and a brother, Elmer Leonhardt.
Lina Christina Leonhardt was born February 25, 1915 in Middle Amana, the daughter of Ferdinand and Minnie Reihmann Leonhardt. She attended school in communal Amana until age 14, when she was assigned by the governing elders to work in one of Middle Amana’s communal kitchens. After the Amana Society abandoned communalism, she enrolled in and graduated from the Cedar Rapid’s Business College. For a number of years she worked in the Main Office of the new Amana Society Corporation. In later years, she served as Assistant Postmaster at the Middle Amana Post Office and as bookkeeper for the Amana Heritage Society. She married Leonard A. Rettig on February 18, 1939 at the Middle Amana Community Church. The couple remained in Middle Amana, where three children were born to this happy 66-year union. Leonard died March 20, 2005.
Lina was a beautiful lady, both in stature and in temperament. She was a gentle soul who made friends easily and who loved and cared for her family unconditionally. She was a member of the Amana Church Society, AARP, the Amana Heritage Society, and the Amana Arts Guild. She also participated in the Calico Investment Club and volunteered her time as a Campfire Girl leader.
Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society, Amana Heritage Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Edward L. Gleason, age 78 of Marengo, died Friday, October 13, 2006 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by a sister, Iris Schafbuch Cooney of Marengo; nieces and nephews, Jamie Frimml, Don (Vicki) Schafbuch, Christy (Blake) Steinford, and Joe (Trish) Gleason, all of Marengo, Cathy Schnabel of Blue Grass, LuAnn (Steve) Allar of Fairfax, Dennis Graesser and Carol (Gary) Hopp of West Amana, and Faith Schwabe of North Liberty; a step-daughter, Juanita “Toots” Plowman of Marengo, many great nieces and nephews and several step-grandchildren. In addition he is survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lucille Grunloh and Roy Luchtefeld of Effingham, IL and Don and Alden Luchtefeld of Louisville, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Norma Jean in 2003, two brothers, Orrin and Kenneth Gleason, two sisters, Helen Thormann and Joyce Unglenk, a step-daughter, Rita Emerson and a nephew, John Gleason.
Edward Louis Gleason was born February 13, 1928 in Marengo, the son of John Henry Gleason and Anna Louise Eichhorn. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1946 -1948 stationed in California. He married Norma Jean Luchtefeld on June 7, 1985 in Springfield, IL. Ed managed “Fridays” Tap and Grocery in Rock Island, was a school bus driver, a carpenter and painter. Most recently he was employed at S & S Plumbing and Heating in Marengo. He was a member of the Marengo American Legion Post #76, and the Marengo Garden Club. He also served on the Cemetery Board. He was a member the Marengo Historical Society, the Genealogy Society, and the Iowa County Cancer Society, including the Relay for Life.
Ed was an avid bird watcher, and enjoyed gardening, winning many awards for flowers and vegetables at the county fair. He looked forward to ‘Poppy Sales” for the American Legion and “forget-me-not” sales for the VA Hospital. Ed loved to cook for the deer hunting groups and most recently raised funds for the Marengo Fire Works. Ed was a very loving individual and will be missed by all who knew him.
