Z. Ethel Lortz, age 94, of Amana, formerly of Williamsburg, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 at Colonial Manor of Amana, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 2, 2006, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Williamsburg with Rev. James Parks officiating. Burial will be in Pilot Grove Cemetery, Williamsburg. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to St. Paul’s Methodist Church Building Fund.
She is survived by a daughter, Yvonne “Bonnie” Hull and husband Bob of Cedar Rapids; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Lortz of Conroy; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 9 step-great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. In addition she is survived by a sister, Viola Roberts of Grundy Center, and sisters-in-law, Yvonne Grimm and Elaine Lortz of Williamsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Malcolm in 1951, a son Larry Lortz in 2003, three brothers, Ernest, Dean and Eugene Grimm, and a son-in-law, Mervin Glandorf in 1988.
Zelda Ethel Grimm was born June 21, 1912 in rural Millersburg, the daughter of Connie Ellsworth Grimm and Elva Ethel Sparrow Grimm. She received her education in the Millersburg schools and graduated from Millersburg High School in 1930. Ethel married Malcolm Ralph Lortz on February 17, 1933. She was a telephone operator in Williamsburg for many years. She also worked at the Ben Franklin Store in Williamsburg and provided day care in her home. After her husband died in 1951, Ethel rented rooms in her home to boarders. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Williamsburg.

A. Frank Landuyt, age 80 of Marengo, formerly of the Brooklyn area, died Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at Brooklyn Community Estates in Brooklyn following an extended illness. Private Family Services will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2006. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be contributed to Amenity Hospice in his name. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Margie of Marengo; 4 sons, Steven (Marcia) of North Liberty, Richard of Downey, CA, Greg (Nancy) of Greenfield, Indiana, and Jeff (Kari) of San Diego, CA; a daughter, Darlene Kasal (Darrel) of Belle Plaine, 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Daniel.
Aime Frank Landuyt was born January 29, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Rene and Hortense DeSmet Landuyt. He received his education in the Guernsey area schools. He married Margie Ann Lyman on May 19, 1946 at the Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn. Frank was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic for the Iowa County Road Department for over 30 years.

Marian Jean Schafbuch, age 85 of Springfield, MO., formerly of Marengo, died Thursday, July 13, 2006 in Springfield following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 17, 2006 at the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Burial will be in the Genoa Bluff Cemetery, rural Ladora, IA. Friends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday, July 16, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo.
Marian is survived by her children, Ellen Parlier of Springfield, MO, Janice Miller and husband Del of San Diego, CA, Linda Aston and husband Keith of Tulsa, OK, and Jim Schafbuch and wife Sheryl of Marengo; 10 grandchildren Todd Miller, Manhattan, KS, Tad Miller, Wichita, KS, Lorna Shrewsberry, Loretta Bradley, Lindsay Bradley, all of Tulsa OK, Dr. Danielle Leskie, Troy, MI, Devon Kaster, Berkley, MI, Nathan Schafbuch, Manley, IA, Keri and Dustin Schafbuch of Marengo and three great-grandchildren Katerina, Alexandra, and Nicholas Leskie. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Mary Kramer and a brother-in-law, Charles Hibbs
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 2 sisters Helen Hibbs and Evelyn Kramer, a brother Harry Kramer, a grandson, Troy Miller, and her son–in-law Jim Parlier.
Marian Jean Kramer was born on May 17, 1921 in Nora Springs Iowa the daughter of Harry Kramer and Minnie L. Scholtz Kramer. She graduated from Carson High School in Marengo, IA on May 17, 1939. After attending Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls, she taught in several one-room schools. Marian became a full time homemaker after she married Lewis R. Schafbuch on Nov. 16, 1945 at the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo. The couple were the proud parents of four children, who survive her. Lewis died January 3, 1995. Marian passed away Thursday surrounded by her daughters and her dear friend Luella Singleton.

Arnold Bernard “Arnie” Hanson, Jr. age 66, died Monday July 17, 2006 in an auto accident. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Thursday July 20, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Parnell, with Father Pat Lumsden officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Parnell. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Wednesday July 19, 2006 at the church where a parish rosary will be recited at 8:00 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to the Iowa County 4-H Foundation. Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Elaine; his children, Diana Lutz of Williamsburg, Mark (Lisa) Hanson of Cedar Rapids, Angie (Scott) Westcott of Williamsburg, Marty (Rachael) Hanson of Williamsburg, and Mitch Hanson of Williamsburg; ten grandchildren, Christopher (Eva) Lutz, Kelly (Justin) McDonald, Michelle Lutz, Michael Lutz, Derrick, Devin, and MacKenzie Westcott, Brennan and Reiley Hanson, and Kennady Rathjen; three great-grandchildren, Avery Lutz, and Kierstin and Jacob McDonald. Also surviving are two sisters, Kathleen Hanson of Iowa City, and Margaret (Mike) Blaylock of North English. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife’s parents George and Clara Martin, three brothers-in-law, Raphael Martin, John Martin, Bill White, and a sister-in-law Rita Snow.
Arnold Bernard Hanson, Jr. was born February 14, 1940 in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Arnold B. Hanson and Anna Veda (Lower) Hanson. He received his education in the Parnell Schools, graduating from Parnell High School in 1958. He married Elaine Maureen Martin on October 2, 1962 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfax. Besides hog farming, Arnold worked in security at the Palo Nuclear Power Plant and most recently as a parking attendant at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Arnie was a 4-H leader for over 25 years. He was a member of the Ruritans, Knights of Columbus, and the Iowa County Pork Producers. He was a life-long member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Parnell. He loved playing cards, gardening, and was an avid country music fan. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. He especially enjoyed the annual trips to Las Vegas and attending his grandchildren’s activities. Arnie always had time to share a joke or tell a story with friends.

Harold Lloyd Bailey, age 80, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Services: 10:30 A. M. Tuesday, August 1, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Eric Nygren officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, July 31, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife Brooksie, six children, Curtis Casper Bailey (Denise) of Marengo, Jeri Lynn Springman (Barry) of Alburnett, Joe Glynn Losch (Diane) of Cedar Rapids, John Francis Losch (Donna) of Florida, Joan Rae Ondler (Corky) of Marion, and Jim Henry Losch ( Sharon) of Marion; 13 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by two brothers, Dick Bailey (Joan) and Cliff Bailey (Linda) of Potosi, WI. and his many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Helen Meyer (Charlie) of Guttenberg, Gladys Gohde (Clarence “Bud”) of McGregor, and Grace Hoffman(Laverne) of Rockford, IL, and two brothers, Robert of Clayton and Raymond Bailey of Bagley, WI.
Harold Lloyd Bailey was born May 27, 1926 in Clayton, Iowa, the son of Henry Casper Bailey and Jeannette Meade Bailey. He received his education in the Clayton schools and graduated from McGregor High School in 1944.
Harold served in field artillery in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of corporal. He married Brooksie Watts on July 28, 1975 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Harold was employed at National Oats in Cedar Rapids for 38 ½ years, retiring in 1991.
He was always known for his sense of humor, and enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and his camping trips back to Clayton. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandson Alex.

ROY HENRY EHRMANN, age 85, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 30, 2006 at the Middle Amana Community Church with Elder Elly Hoehnle officiating. Burial will be in the East Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, June 29, 2006 at the church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana First Responders or the Amana Church Sunday School. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Marie, two sons, Carl and wife Debbie of Amana and Paul and wife Susan of Hughson, CA; a daughter, Kris Ehrmann of Amana; 8 grandchildren, David and Bobby Ehrmann, Darcy, Carrie, and Jacob Ehrmann, Nick Kleinmeyer and wife Lindsay, and Kimberly and Andrew Kleinmeyer. Also surviving are two brothers, George and wife Ruth of Amana and Richard and wife Leona of Frankfurt, Indiana; a sister Henrietta Schwarting of Middle Amana, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alfred and Walter “Pete”.
Roy Henry Ehrmann was born August 1, 1920 in West Amana, Iowa, the son of Fred and Ida Schoenfelder Ehrmann. He received his education in the Amana Schools and served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45. He married Marie Schaefer on September 25, 1948 in Cedar Rapids. Roy was employed at Amana Refrigeration as a shipping foreman from 1940 until 1982 when he retired. He then worked part time at Krauss Furniture from 1983 until 2003.
Roy loved his grandchildren and spending time with the family. He was a real “people person”. Roy enjoyed attending Iowa football games with his brother and best friend, George. He was a member of the Amana Church Society, the Amana Retirees and was active in caring for the East Amana Cemetery. Roy was also Quartermaster for the Boy Scouts.

Ramon Goerler, age 78, died Monday, July 3, 2006 at his home at Lakeview Village, following a heroic battle with cancer. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 7, 2006, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Kristie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, July 6, 2006 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to St. Luke’s Hospice or Colonial Manor Nursing Home. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Ramon Ferdinand Goerler was born May 26, 1928 in Amana, Iowa, the son of Ferdinand and Esther Schaefer Goerler. He spent most of his life in Amana, living in the home where he was born. As a boy he worked the Amana Society farms. He graduated from the Amana High School in 1946. He served his country from 1948-1950 in the U.S. Navy, in California and at sea on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific and Asia. He briefly attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and then managed the Amana Store for a number of years. He co-founded the Old Wine Cellar winery in Amana in 1961, and ran it successfully until he sold it upon his retirement in 1996. Ray cared deeply for the winemaking craft and entrepreneurship, even after retirement, and was patient and generous in sharing his expertise with his many apprentices.
He was married to Bette Siemer from 1951 to 1988. Together they established and operated several wineries in Amana. He was married to Pam Meissner from 1991 to 2003. Although Ray had no children, nieces or nephews, he loved helping raise his stepson, Josh Cuno, and he fondly remembers the boating trips on the Mississippi River houseboat, and many other activities.
Ray, as everyone called him, was an avid golfer and was a founding member of the Amana Colonies Golf Course. His greatest love was participating in golf tournaments at the course with his good friends and golf buddies. Ray belonged to the “Hole in One” International club, having achieved that twice in his years as an avid golfer. Ray also loved woodworking in his shop, a craft at which he excelled; he built many pieces of fine furniture for friends and his own home. He also traveled widely and enjoyed gardening.
Ray is remembered as a tall, handsome man with a ready smile and laugh, who could always entertain those around him. He frequently gathered his longtime friends for drinks, dinner, and some laughs, as he thrived in social settings. He was known for his generosity, wry wit, gentle and genial nature, and joke and storytelling talent.
Pam lovingly and tirelessly cared for Ramon during his final days. He friends and family were constant companions during those difficult times, as was his dog and faithful companion, Gizmo. An aunt, Helen Heinze of Amana, and many cousins from both the Goerler and Schaefer families survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Viola “Sandy” Goerler Charipar in March 2006.

M. Elizabeth “Betty” Moessner, age 82 of Middle Amana, died Saturday evening, July 8, 2006 at Colonial Manor of Amana, following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, with Rev. Jerry Rife officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, July 10, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Survivors include her husband, Arnold; two daughters, Sandra Helpsmeet and husband Mark of Eau Claire, WI, and Lauren Christiansen and husband Mark of Monticello, MN; a son, Drew and wife Amy of Byron, MN; twelve grandchildren, Angelique Hummel (Scott) of Cedar Rapids, Ian Hansen of Eau Claire, WI, Jaime Hansen of Minneapolis, MN, Joseph Hansen of Madison, WI, Jonathan Hansen of Lansing, MI, Chris Judgekins-Fischer of Minneapolis, MN, Meredith Halling, Byron, MN, Kendra Christiansen of Monticello, MN, Tyler Moessner of Myron, MN, Geoffrey Halling of Byron, MN, Cameron Christiansen of Monticello, MN and Hayley Moessner of Byron, MN; two great-grandchildren, Mya and Noah Hummel of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Elaine Aniloski of Laguna Niguel, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Ardivee and Althea, and a son, Barry Dean.
M. Elizabeth Tarr was born November 7, 1923 in LaPorte, Indiana, the daughter of Willard Webster Tarr and Lillian Christine Payreleithner Tarr. She attended Elmhurst High School and married Arnold E. Moessner on October 21, 1945 at Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She was a homemaker and worked part time at the Amana Society Service Company. Betty was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Marengo. She enjoyed all aspects of her family life and also enjoyed sewing.
