Irene L. Frimml, age 85, died Monday, July 2, 2007 at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, July 5, 2007, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to the Perpetual Care Fund for Calvary Cemetery, Marengo, Iowa. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her husband Lawrence; a son, Gerald (Mary) of Atkinson, IL; two daughters, Janet Mohead (Ernie) of Vicksburg, MS and Linda Steele (Leonard) of North English; five grandchildren Lisa Gildehaus (Allen) of Ames, Laura Hansen (Kris) of Redmond, WA, Sara Frimml of Bettendorf, Clancy Steele (Amy) of Huntsville, AL, and Cheyan Steele (Heather) of Hiawatha, and three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Eric Gildehaus and Maverick Steele. In addition she is survived by brothers, Leroy Ballard (Mildred) and Richard (Carol) Ballard and a sister, Helen Plotz (Parlyn) all of Marengo. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Estelle Kensler, and four brothers, Harry, Edmond, Robert and James Ballard, Jr.
Irene Lillian Ballard was born July 9, 1921 in Troy Township of Iowa County, near Williamsburg, Iowa. She was the daughter of James Adrian Ballard and J. Esther Whitfield Ballard. She received her education in the Iowa County schools and married Lawrence F. Frimml on October 10, 1939 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Watkins. Besides being a homemaker, Irene assisted her husband on the farm. She also worked at the Ox Yoke Inn in the 1970’s. Irene enjoyed embroidering, collecting recipes, shopping, flowers, cooking for her family, especially baking pies, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Irene was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Harold R. Gunzenhauser, age 86 of Marengo, died Saturday, March 3, 2007 at his home following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, March 7, 2006, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Marengo American Legion Post #76. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his son, Michael and wife Gena of Marengo, his daughter, Carol Ann Pinion and husband Ronnie of Reidsville, North Carolina, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 2003, four brothers, Roy, Carl, Louis and Clarence, and three sisters, Margaret Allen, Edna Kuhnle, and Lorene Denzler.
Harold Russell Gunzenhauser was born October 30, 1920 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Charles William and Margaret (Burgy) Gunzenhauser. He received his education in the Iowa County schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was wounded and then stationed in Liverpool, England. He received the Purple Heart. Harold married Ann Frances Brehany on January 21, 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He farmed southwest of Marengo for over 40 years.
Harold was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. He loved watching wrestling on television and also enjoyed stock car racing. He spent many hours discussing politics and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Leslie Wayne Haldy, age 60 of Amana, died Saturday, March 17, 2007 at his home following a sudden illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 21, 2007, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Ellie Hoehnle officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at the Middle Amana Community Church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by a brother Ronald Haldy of Walford; an aunt, Dorothy DeGood of Amana; nieces, Lisa Wnek (Tim) of Middle and Heidi Haldy of Lexington, KY; cousins, Ruby Kleinmeyer (Rick) of Homestead, and Dennis DeGood of Corpus Christi, TX; great nieces Caitlin and Danielle Wnek and cousins, Amanda, Jennie and Christa Kleinmeyer; and many cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Leslie Wayne Haldy was born October 30, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Herbert J. and Louise E. Rohrbacher Haldy. He graduated from Amana High School in 1966 and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was employed by Amana Refrigeration for many years and most recently worked at the Grapevine Winery. Leslie was a hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Amana Sportsmen’s Club. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, cooking, golf, and playing cards.

Kimberly Ann Hamilton, age 36 of Marengo, died Thursday, February 15, 2007 at her home following a sudden illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 19, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Jackie Tjarks officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fairfax. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Sunday, February 18, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her husband Tad; four sons, Tad II “T.J.”, Samuel, Dakota and Nicholas, all at home; her parents, Larry and Janice Dougherty of Anamosa; a sister, Kris Dougherty of Cedar Rapids, and a step-sister, Sherry Bean of Jackson, TN.
Kimberly Ann Dougherty was born August 8, 1970 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Larry and Janice Husmann Dougherty. She graduated in 1988 from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids and attended Kirkwood Community College. She married Tad Hamilton on April 21, 1989 in Cedar Rapids. Kimberly was employed on the assembly line at Whirlpool in Amana. She enjoyed mini tractor pulls, reading, and spending time with her family.

Erhard “Ed” H. Harms, age 90 died Thursday December 21, 2006 at Colonial Manor in Amana following an extended illness. A private family service will be held on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Pastor Wayne Woolery officiating. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL with Pastor Les Dumer officiating. Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead, IA or the charity of the donor’s choice.
He is survived by two sons, David (Cathy) of East Moline, IL; and Richard (Sonia) of Dallas, TX; a daughter Elva “Ellie” (Norman) Trondsen of Grass Valley, CA and three grandchildren, Andrew, Heidi, and Erik Harms. He is also survived by two sisters Beata Blaylock and Elda Bennett, both of Gurnee, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Marie Mueller Harms, his wife Sylvia in 2004, and three sisters Elva Harms, Vera Mason, and Lota Niemand.
Erhard Herman Harms was born the son of Herman and Marie (Mueller) Harms at Batavia, IL. He graduated from Davenport High School and attended Concordia College in Milwaukee. He graduated with a Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. He married Sylvia Klunder on Feb. 8 1942 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Davenport. He served in the U.S. Army as a chaplain for over 24 years being discharged at the rank of Colonel. After retiring from the military, Erhard served as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Coal Valley, IL. He also worked as an EMT while there. Following his retirement from the ministry the couple lived in Paris, IL for ten years, and for the past five years they have resided in Amana. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead, Iowa and in earlier years was a member of Lions Club.

Jeanette C. Hartz, age 84, of Marengo, died of heart failure Monday morning, December 3, 2007 at her home. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, December 7, 2007, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Jim Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the funeral home. Memorials may be contributed to Marengo Senior Dining.
She is survived by her children, Linda Rump and husband Rick of Roseville, MN, Paula Blinkinsop and husband Gary of Davenport, IA, Jeff Hartz and wife Jan of Mansfield, TX and Sara Hartz of Dallas, TX; seven grandchildren, Bryant Rump, Allison Keuning (James Michael), Eric Blinkinsop (Lindsay), Laura Nestor, Kara Nestor, Hunter Hartz and Stacy Hartz, and a great-grandson Tristan Keuning. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lyle Hartz in 1976, a brother, Judson Clements and a grandson, Lyle Blinkinsop.
Jeanette Maurice Clements was born May 19, 1923 in Copperas Cove, TX, the daughter of Judson and Ophelia Irvine Clements. She graduated from San Angelo High School, San Angelo, TX in 1939 and San Angelo State College in 1941. Jeanette married Lyle Harrison Hartz on March 20, 1943 in Eagle Pass, TX. Following World War II, the couple settled in Marengo. Jeanette was a mother and a homemaker. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of the Marengo Golf Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Marengo for 61 years.

Earl D. “Sonny” Herman, Jr. age 70, of Marengo, died Wednesday morning, December 5, 2007, at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness. Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the Marengo American Legion Hall with Josh Hoylman officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Marengo American Legion Post #76. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, December 7, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife Betty; three sons, Jim of Coralville, Dale and wife Nancee of Atkins, and Rodney of Marengo; two daughters, Cindy Hoylman and husband Bill of South English, and Penny Mews of Marengo; thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Glendola Koch of Dike, two brothers, Danny Herman of Ozark, MO and Glen Herman of Cedar Rapids, and two sisters, Erlaine Wheeler of Belle Plaine and Celia Harken of Applington. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Herman, Sr. in 1962, a grandson James in 1999, and his step-father Laurence Koch in 2003.
Earl Donald “Sonny” Herman, Jr. was born June 24, 1937 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Earl and Glendola Richardson Herman. He attended schools in Iowa County and Albuquerque, NM. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Betty Knapp on April 19, 1958 at the Wesley Methodist Church in Marengo. He was employed at Amana Refrigeration in the maintenance department. He then was a welder at John Deere and a pipe fitter for Quaker Oats. Finally, Sonny was owner and operator of Herman and Sons Skelly Gas Station.
Sonny was a member of the Marengo American Legion Post #76 where he served as a commander, was treasurer, and a member of the honor guard. He also tended bar there. He enjoyed collecting coins, playing cards, and bingo. Sonny was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed panning for gold, hunting, fishing, trapping, and mushroom hunting. He once joined his uncles on a salmon fishing trip to Alaska. But he treasured his family the most.

Charles Henry Hibbs, age 94 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Marengo, died Saturday, September 15, 2007 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following complications of surgery. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Dr. Robert P. Robinson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home. Memorials may be contributed to the Marengo Public Library or the Iowa Commission for the Blind.
He is survived by a three children, Janet Byram and husband Harold of Georgetown, TX, Sheryl Peshek and husband Richard of Mount Vernon, and Robert and wife Barbara of Marshalltown; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special friend and classmate, Virginia McCloskey of West Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Helen in 1998.
Charles Henry Hibbs was born February 21, 1913 in Marengo, Iowa the son of Robert R. and Helen Gode Hibbs. He attended the Marengo schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1930. After attending Coe College in Cedar Rapids for a year, Charles was employed by the family business, the Henry Gode Dry Goods Company until it closed in 1966. Charles married Helen G. Kramer on October 9, 1936. In 1972, the couple moved to Cedar Rapids, where Charles was employed by the J. S. Cook Wholesale Dry Goods Co. until his retirement in 1978. From 1979-1993 he was a bailiff in the 6 th Judicial Court system, a position he thoroughly enjoyed. Charles was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids and a longtime member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed the outdoors as an avid hunter, fisherman and canoeist.

Farrell “Dean” Hoit, age 84, died Friday, October 19, 2007 at the Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center following a brief illness. Memorial Services: 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, October 31, 2007, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Jim Davis officiating. The family will receive friends after 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at the North English Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his sister, Virginia Blackford Sullivan of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Farrell “Dean” Hoit was born June 27, 1923 in Sumner Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Morra M. Hoit and Jessie E. Smith Hoit. He graduated from the Ladora High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a surgical technician. He was employed at a cement block factory in Cedar Rapids, and then worked for many years at the Amana Woolen Mills, retiring from there. Following retirement he worked at Pioneer Seed in Marengo, sorting corn during harvest time.
Dean was a quiet man who believed in doing the “right thing” and lived his life accordingly.
