Florence Mosdell Smith, age 89 of Marengo, died Thursday, June 5, 2008 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 9, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 4 P.M. Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her son Robert and wife Joyce of Marengo, a grandson, Jeffrey Smith and wife Danielle also of Marengo, a granddaughter, Megan Martin and husband Chad of Monroe, CT, and great-granddaughters, Caleigh Smith, Taylor Smith, Jaden Smith and Reese Martin. Also surviving are two brothers, Oscar Mosdell of Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, Canada and David Mosdell of Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert Gordon Smith in June 1959, a sister Joyce Kielly and three brothers, Stirling Mosdell, Adolphus Mosdell and Noah Mosdell. Also preceding her were her father-in-law, Frank R. Smith, her mother-in-law, Leila Tompkins Smith and a sister-in-law, F. Ramona Smith Coker.
Florence Gertrude Mosdell was born on September 22, 1918 in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, Canada, the daughter of Stirling and Susie Dwyer Mosdell. She met Robert Gordon Smith while he was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. She moved to Iowa in May of 1945 and they married on June 7, 1945 at the Presbyterian Church in Marengo. Florence was employed at Peterson Pharmacy in Marengo, the Cedar Rapids Business College and Amana Refrigeration. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of Eastern Star. Florence enjoyed spending time with her family, quilting, sewing, knitting and baking.

Roy Alan Denzler, Jr. age 90 of Marengo, died Friday, June 6, 2008 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Katie Z. Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Monday, June 9, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
Roy is survived by his wife Margaret; two sons, Jeffrey “Jerry” Denzler and wife Carole of Marengo, and Stephen and wife Judy of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter Marilyn Koch of Ames; six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Roy Alan Denzler, Jr. was born March 12, 1918 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Roy and Adelaide Bright Denzler. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1936. Roy married Margaret A. Reece on March 12, 1941 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City, Iowa. In the 1940’s Roy worked at the canning factory in Marengo. He farmed in Washington Township with his father, worked at Amana Refrigeration as a guard, and was a rural mail carrier.
Roy loved watching the Hawkeye basketball teams and was an avid Cubs fan. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.

Donna Rae Gunzenhauser, age 80, of Marengo, died Sunday, June 15, 2008 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 18, 2008, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with a Scripture Service at 7:00 P.M. followed by a Rosary. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by two sons, Steve Gunzenhauser (Polly) of Marengo and Scott Gunzenhauser (Jill) of Ozark, MO; three grandchildren, Seth and Clay Gunzenhauser of Marengo and Given Gunzenhauser of Ozark MO; a sister Nancy Kay Kelly of Bettendorf, and two sisters-in law, Betty Fry and JoAnne Dalton of Marengo along with ten nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Eugene Carroll “Motor” Gunzenhauser in 1984.
Donna Rae Gove was born January 2, 1928 in rural Sully, Poweshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Frieda Scott Gove. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1946 and the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Following a move to Marengo and teaching in the elementary school, she continued her education and graduated from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. Donna married Eugene Carroll Gunzenhauser on August 22, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell. She continued as an elementary teacher for 38 years.
Donna was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo, the Altar and Rosary Society, ISEA/NEA, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Marengo Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Marengo Library, the Marengo Golf Club and several bridge clubs. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and following her beloved “Hawkeyes”. Donna also was very active in countless fundraisers for the community.

Shirley Marie Schindler Dye, age 71, died Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following a long illness. Funeral services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 3, 2008, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Pastor Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday, June 2, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her children, Vera Dye of North English, Kevin (Karen) Dye of Williamsburg, and Deanne (Todd) Mumm of Parnell; ten grandchildren, Richard Street III of Las Vegas, Nevada, Steve Street of Sigourney, IA, Michael Street, Tiffany Dye, Melissa Street, and Jacob Dye, all of Williamsburg, Amanda Glandorf, Katie Glandorf, Bryson Mumm and Braden Mumm, all of Parnell; two brothers, Delmar (Irene) Schindler of Marengo, Milver (Phyllis) Schindler of Marion, IA and a sister Irene Schindler of Marengo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ernest in 2005, and a brother Calvin.
Shirley Marie Schindler was born August 16, 1936 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Peter and Katie Klotz Schindler. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1957 and married Ernest D. Dye on June 23, 1957 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. Shirley enjoyed cooking and baking, playing cards and board games. She liked to garden and read, and watch the food channel. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Shirley was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo.

Edward Lewis Meyer, Sr., age 70, of Marengo, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at his home following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 7, 2008, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Pastor Nathan Loehr officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday, June 6, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife, Annette; his son, Edward Meyer, Jr. of Marengo; a “special” grandson, Sam Wirtanen, also of Marengo; two brothers, Richard Meyer and wife Marietta of Parnell and Leonard Meyer of Conroy; and two sisters, Ruth Melsa of Marengo and Della Stevens and husband Orman of Deep River.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers Vernon, Melvin, David and Floyd.
Edward Lewis Meyer was born May 9, 1938 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Alice Mumm Meyer. He received his education in the Williamsburg schools. Edward married Annette Seeley on October 8, 1969 in Marengo. He was employed for 39 years at Pioneer Seed in Marengo as a truck driver and lift operator, retiring in 2000. Following his retirement he continued to work part time at Pioneer Seed and also worked for the Pioneer-Republican newspaper.

Lawrence F. Frimml, age 93 of Marengo, died Thursday morning, June 5, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 1:30 P.M. Saturday, June 7, 2008, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Prayer Service: 12:30 P.M. Saturday, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church where the family will greet friends following prayer service until funeral service time. In lieu of flowers memorials may be contributed to Calvary Cemetery Maintenance Fund. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his children, Gerald Frimml ( Mary) of Atkinson, IL, Janet Mohead (Ernie) of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Linda Steele (Leonard) of North English; five grandchildren, Lisa Gildehaus (Allen) of Ames, IA, Laura Hansen (Kris) of Redmond, Washington, Sara Frimml of Bettendorf, IA, Clancy Steele (Amy) of Huntsville, AL and Cheyan Steele (Heather) of Hiawatha, IA; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Eric Gildehaus and Mavrick Steele; and a brother Howard Frimml of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene in 2007, two brothers, George and Martin and two sisters, Leona in infancy and Marcella Kimm.
Lawrence Francis Frimml was born September 7, 1914 in Washington Township, Iowa County, Iowa. He received his education in the Iowa County schools and married Irene Lillian Ballard on October 10, 1939 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Watkins, IA. The couple farmed in Iowa and Benton Counties until 1955. Lawrence then was employed at Pioneer Seed in Marengo, was self-employed as a trucker, and worked for his brother Jud at Frimml Grain. Lawrence was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo and the Iowa County Farm Bureau.
Lawrence was a social person who enjoyed the “simple joys of life”—chatting with buddies over coffee at the Pronto station, going fishing, and a good card game (bid Euchre). He had an appreciation for the beauty of nature, and good conversation, but nothing gave him more joy than being with his family.

Bonnie Lou Krogman, age 51, died Sunday, May 18, 2008 at her home following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial-Celebration of Life Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 22, 2008, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost and Deacon Ron Kazmeirzak officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with a Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to Iowa City Hospice.
She is survived by her husband James Krogman; her children, Jennifer Stanton (Norman) of Hollis, Maine, Schlena Stanton (Mark) of Homestead, and Dean Sabin of Waterloo; and six grandchildren, Justin and Kameron Sabin, Natasha, Mark, and Seth Stanton, and Ashley Stanton. In addition she is survived by her mother and stepfather, Frances and Marvin Stackhouse of Marengo; two brothers, David Crawford of Wayland and Melvin Crawford of Amana; three sisters, Thea Walton and Corliss Donovan of Iowa City, and Lyla Erwin of Marengo and three stepsons, Donnie Stockman of Des Moines, and Terry and David Stockman of Oxford. She was preceded in death by her father, two brothers, Lyle G. Crawford and Terry L. Crawford, a sister Connie Bringer and a stepbrother Chris Stackhouse.
Bonnie Lou Crawford was born June 3, 1956 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Lyle J. and Frances Amlong Crawford. She received her education in the Washington, IA schools. Bonnie married James Krogman on July 7, 1983 in Marshalltown, IA. The couple had lived in Marengo for the past 8 years. Bonnie was employed at the University of Iowa, Iowa City in the housekeeping department. She also worked at Casey’s in Marengo for many years.
Bonnie was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. She loved to garden, and spend time with her family and friends, including those in Montana. She enjoyed watching the wildlife in Montana and here in Iowa.

Harlon M. Dehning, age 66 of Marengo, died Monday afternoon, May 19, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness. Memorial Service: 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 23, 2008, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, IA, with Pastor Jackie Tjarks officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ladora Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday May 22, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to the Ladora Cemetery or Iowa City Hospice, Iowa City, Iowa.
Harlon is survived by his wife, Karen; a daughter, Lorie Slaymaker (Paul) of Tiffin and a son Greg Dehning of New Virginia; two grandchildren Daniel Slaymaker of Oxford and Adam Slaymaker of Vinton; two brothers Duane (Nancy) Dehning of Decorah and Ronald (Kathy) of Decorah; and many nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are three sister in laws Kate Hovden, Darlene (Dennis) Frana and LuAnn Smith, all of Decorah; two brother in laws Earl (Eileen) Smith of Hudson and Don (Joyce) Smith of Keosauqua; Special friends Rick (Kathy) Kahler of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Harlon M. Dehning was born August 20, 1941 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Harold and Eleanor Easton Dehning. He graduated from Decorah High School and then married Karen Smith on November 27, 1960 at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church in Decorah. Harlon worked as a metal polisher for 35 years with Evergreen Packaging Company and later retired from there in December of 2000. Harlan enjoyed woodworking, camping, attending horse shows and loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
