Thomas J. “Tom” Kriegel, age 62 of Brooklyn, Iowa, died Monday, April 14, 2014 at Brooklyn Community Estate, Brooklyn. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 21, 2014, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his siblings, Francis (Marilyn) Kriegel of Victor, Joanne (Gary) Phillips of Marshalltown, Jane (Mike) Glasford of Crooks, SD, Raphael (Diane) Kriegel of Montezuma, Theresa (Tom) Goeke of Pueblo West, CO, Elizabeth (Charles) Cretin of Eldora, Vincent Kriegel of Crooks, SD, Margaret Carlton (Darrell Beason) of Brooklyn, IA, David (Chelle) Kriegel of Laurel, Dorothy (Nathan) Allen of Winterset, Ted (Tammy) Kriegel of Brooklyn, and Agnes (James) Crabtree of Brooklyn; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William John and Catherine Roberta Pfiffner Kriegel, two nephews, Lloyd and Walter Kriegel, and a great-niece Ashley Phillips.
Thomas Joseph Kriegel was born April 21, 1951 in Grinnell, Iowa, the fifth of thirteen children born to William and Catherine Pfiffner Kriegel. He attended the Scott #1 country school for kindergarten and went on to graduate from BGM High School with the Class of 1970. Tom worked for Farmhand Ag Equipment in Grinnell from 1972 – 1987, and for Amana Refrigeration for several years, retiring from there. He spent his spare time farming with his brothers, Francis and Ray. Tom was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. He also was an active member of 4-H and FFA.
Tom’s favorite pastimes were walking the dogs, Kringle and Komet, hiking at Diamond Lake, and going downtown to eat at the Classic Deli. He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching the Chicago Cubs.

Garygene R. Scalf, age 70 of Marengo, Iowa, died Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in Iowa City. A memorial gathering for his friends and family will be held at a later date. Kloster Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Garygene is survived by his father Eugene Scalf of Prescott, AZ, two brothers, Dennis of Stigler, OK, and Randy of the Philippines; four sisters, Sharronne Vincent and Kandyce Scalf, both of Deer Island, OR, Kathleen Lyons (Stan) of Brentwood, CA, and Tami Worley of Beaverton, OR. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Garygene Rudolf Scalf was born October 4, 1943 in Hermiston, OR, the son of Eugene Vincent Scalf and Ruth Hienley Scalf. He attended the Oregon schools. Garygene had been employed as a bus boy at a local restaurant, worked for the Amana Lumberyard, and at REC in Conroy. He enjoyed bowling, and traveling, and also liked to dance.

Walter H. Kraft, age 82, of West Amana, died Friday morning, April 11, 2014 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 14, 2014 at Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo. Rev. Travis Borkosky will officiate. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife Erika of West Amana; two sons Tom and Rudy Kraft both of West Amana; a daughter Heidy Edwards (Ted) of Amana; a grandchild Sandy Sutherby (Dan) of Walford; and a brother Werner Kraft of Heilbrohn, Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law Elizabeth Kraft.
Walter Horst Kraft was born in Weiler, Germany on January 17, 1932, the son of Christopher Kraft and Louise Miller Kraft. He received his education in Germany and then attended trade school. He and Erika Lieber were united in marriage on September 1, 1955 in Toronto, Canada. Walter was a beautiful furniture builder, and also a contractor for many years.
Walter especially enjoyed photography and traveling to different countries.

Walter A. Stanerson, age 89, of Conroy, Iowa, died Friday, March 21, 2014 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo, following a lengthy illness. Memorial Service: 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 12, 2014, First Lutheran Church, Conroy with Rev. Don K. Dovre officiating. Inurnment will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends after 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 12, at the church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.
Walter is survived by his daughters, Denise Jones (Terry) of Omaha, NE, Cheryl Boyer (Robert) of West Bend, WI, and Vicki Cave (Don) of Omaha; six grandchildren, Aaron Jones (Melissa Moehring), Kali Jones, Hannah Boyer, Matthew Boyer, Justin Cave and Maggie Cave; and a great-granddaughter, Hadley Mae Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mae on April 10, 2001, two brothers, Ed and Art and two sisters, Helen Overbaugh and Ethel Hartz.
Walter Alex Stanerson was born August 23, 1924 in Conroy, Iowa, the son of Staner Stanerson and Helen Mae Groesbeck Stanerson. He attended the Hilton Consolidated School in Conroy and graduated with the Class of 1943. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force for 18 months. Walter and Mae Helen Ollis were united in marriage on August 12, 1952 in Calcutta, Ohio. The couple made their home and raised their family in Conroy where Walt co-owned and operated Stanerson Garage and Oil for many years.
Walt enjoyed woodworking and stained glass work in his free time. He also liked music, and was an avid Cubs fan. He was a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church in Conroy.

Murlen Philip Vogt, age 100, of Williamsburg, Iowa, formerly of Homestead, Iowa, was called home to the Lord, Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, following a short illness. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, April 9, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the church. Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, The Lutheran Hour, or the charity of the donor’s choice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Murlen is survived by his children, Ronald Vogt (Rosella) of Homestead, and Donna Blythe (Daryl) of Williamsburg; a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Vogt of Tiffin; ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, Mark Vogt of Homestead, Kerri Vogt of Wheatridge, CO, Keith Vogt (Sandy) and daughter Evangeline Vogt of Cedar Rapids; Becky Esser (Darin) of Cedar Rapids; Christine Fluegel (Jeff) and family Ashley and Logan Fluegel of Janesville, WI; Jon Vogt of Tiffin, Dr. Jeff Blythe (Darcy) and family Paige Fooshee (Garrett) of Derby KS, and Nolan and Clayton Blythe of Orange City; Curt Blythe (Mary) of Williamsburg and family Trenton Blythe (Molly) of Oak Park, IL, Holden Blythe (Kelly), Austin Blythe (Kiley Ritchie) and Corbin Blythe of Williamsburg; Matt Blythe (Robin) and family Garrett and Gage Blythe of Williamsburg; and Stacey Cremeens (Aron) and family Tyler Cremeens, Dillon Blythe, Cole Cremeens, and Carlee Cremeens of Williamsburg; and a brother-in-law, Vernon Sandersfeld (Esther) of Homestead.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gertrude in 2011, a son Lowell Vogt in 2002, and a brother Eldon Vogt.
Murlen Philip Vogt was born March 14, 1914 in Homestead, Iowa, the son of Philip Joeseph Vogt and Katherine Kohler Kuch Vogt. He attended the Homestead schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1932. He was united in marriage to Gertrude Gesina Sandersfeld on November 28, 1940 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Homestead. Murlen was born, raised, and farmed the same land his entire life. This farm is now a designated Century Farm. He also worked for the Homestead Feed Mill, and did land measuring for ASC.
Murlen was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, where he held several offices. He was on the building committee for the education building and the new church. He was a dartball member, and a member of the men’s club. He also was a member of Farm Bureau. Murlen was loyal to the Iowa Hawkeyes, and was also an avid Cubs fan. He especially enjoyed his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and attending all the family and school activities, even his own recently celebrated “100th Birthday Party”.

Garth C. Bigbee, 82, Marengo, died Friday, April 4, 2014, at the Marengo Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, with visitation from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Memorials may be made by those who wish to First Presbyterian Church, Marengo Memorial Hospital Foundation, Iowa Valley School District Foundation, or the charity of donor’s choice.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jane; their children: G. Gregory (Verla) Bigbee, Pella; Ann (Charles Scott) Bigbee, Marengo; Janice (Bill) Bigbee-Hansen, Renton, WA; Jennifer (Ray) Storck, Scottsdale, AZ; and Jenny (David Weenink) Cals, AFS exchange student from The Netherlands; grandchildren: Morgan and Dakota Bigbee, Pella; Catherine Scott, New York City, NY; Jessica Scott, Des Moines; Will and Sam Bigbee-Hansen, Renton; Rebecca Storck, Pullman, WA; and Ryan Storck, Scottsdale; step-grandchildren: Dustyn (Molly) Menninga, Des Moines; LaCosta (Jeremy) Van Dyk, Pella; and Heather (Gary) Vander Heiden, Knoxville; and also Thomas and Louise Weenink, Amsterdam; great-grandchildren: Zarah, Ariana, Madyson, Alexander and Josiah Van Dyk, Pella; and Gage, Brady, Kjersten, and Jace Vander Heiden, Knoxville. Also surviving are a brother-in-law, Dan (Sue) Steele, Westby, WI, and a sister-in-law, Bernice Steele, Spirit Lake.
Garth was preceded in death by his parents, Lon Bigbee (1984) and Erma Bigbee (1999); his parents-in-law, Richard and Catherine Steele; brother-in-law, Thomas Steele, and sister-in-law, Jane Steele.
Garth Charles Bigbee was born Aug. 1, 1931, in Williamsburg, the son of Lon Charles and Erma Lorene Eckert Bigbee. He attended Marengo schools, graduating from Marengo High School in 1949. Garth received a B.S. Degree in Animal Husbandry in 1953 from Iowa State College, Ames. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Garth Bigbee and Jane Ann Steele were married June 28, 1953, at Memorial Presbyterian Church, Cherokee.
Garth served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1956. He was co-pilot on a KC-97 aerial tanker refueling B-47 bombers in mid-air. Following training at bases in Malden, MO, Enid, OK, San Antonio, Texas, and West Palm Beach, FL., he was stationed at Smokey Hill AFB, Salina, KS, a SAC (Strategic Air Command) base, with duty also in England and Newfoundland. Following his discharge from the Air Force, Garth returned home and worked with his parents on Gar-Lon Farms, raising Black Angus cattle from 1956-1970. In 1959 he received the Cedar Rapids Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year. He belonged to the Beef Producers and Cedar Valley Farm Business Association, working for the latter for several years.
In 1970 Garth went into the insurance business specializing in farm estate planning. He earned CLU (Chartered Life Underwriters) and ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultants) professional designations. With four others the partnership RBOZ was formed; they established Insurance Service Corporation of Iowa in Cedar Rapids where he worked until retirement.
Garth was an active fifty-year member of First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, where he was currently serving on its session and on which he had previously served several terms and also as a past president of the congregation. He was a member of the Hymn Bells choir. He was a member of Marengo American Legion Post #76, Iowa County Historical Society, and was a former member and past president of Marengo Rotary Club.
Garth enjoyed spending time with his family, working with his dog, fishing, hunting birds and mushrooms.

Rachel E. Gerard, age 87, of Marengo, Iowa, died April 2, 2014 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital, in Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, April 7, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation; 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Rachel is survived by her son, Russell “Al” (Linda) of Marengo; four daughters, Sherry Kouba (Jon Dale) of Central City, Debbie Saunders (Rex) of Marengo, Becky Wiebold of Marengo, and Kris Gerard of Marengo; ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Russell Dean Gerard on October 24, 1982, two brothers, Noel and Carroll Siems, two sisters, Mildred Siems and Wilma Landuyt; and two grandsons, Blake Saunders and Spencer Kouba.
Rachel Elizabeth Siems was born on April 19, 1926 in Blairstown, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth Hofmaster Siems. She attended the Benton County schools and married Russell Dean Gerard on November 18, 1949. Rachel provided childcare for the families of the Marengo area for many years. She had a great love for her family, and cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, and her flowers. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo.

Jane M. Fraker, age 58 of Brooklyn, died Friday, December 12, 2014 at Brooklyn Community Estate, Brooklyn. Funeral Service: 1:30 P.M. Sunday, December 14, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 12:30 on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be contributed to P.A.L.S. (Poweshiek Animal League Shelter) in her name.
She is survived by her siblings, Randy (Jeannie) Fraker of Fort Madison, Cheryl (Todd) Froelich, Brooklyn, WI, Carol (Charlie) Deedrick, and Dennis (Debra) Fraker of Brooklyn, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a niece.
Jane Marie Fraker was born January 7, 1956 in Grinnell, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Eunice Ford Fraker. She was a lifelong resident of Brooklyn, graduating from BGM High School in 1975, and employed with Brookhaven Nursing Home as a CNA for 24 years.
Jane enjoyed raising rabbits, shopping and cooking. She was a great listener. She was very proud of her farm roots and had a strong love for all animals, especially her cat, Sam. She also collected animal figurines.
